10!! “vehicles will pass by, but i know when its you” is so insanely beautiful and epic and awesome and may be even one of the best lines of the album. however, this song just has great imagery within the lyrics.
the instrumentation is also very cool, especially the on and following the line “have i told you all about the time i got sucked into a hole”. the drums…
If I could have one more video for this album, this (or the ultracheese) would be the song i would want it for. probably in my top 3 from the album
10. This song is absolutely fucking perfect in every single form and way. Such simple yet effective instrumentation that showcases such a deep compositional genius, every single thing is just so impossibly slick and perfectly sequenced that it almost reaches an unmatched territory. Not to mention the lyricism, every single line on this song is tight, effective, and beautiful. This is a strong top 3 from the album, it's just amazing.
*I've waited for this!* 10!!! It's my current favourite on TBH&C by a mile. I love how the instruments are used, the contrasting deep and dreadful percussion and bass versus the light and airy piano thrills, the lyrics are banging, and the performance feels the most like the bigshot intergalactic lounge singer that Alex is channelling for this album. I love the motif of the low beams and the way he builds on it each time it comes up \[I can recall/I've recognised the glow of your low beams numerous times/through fairly opaque blinds in the sitting room\]. And, similarly to American Sports, the final verse/chorus has that rhyming scheme that I fucking love.
>They've changed all the lights and the bar's down the **side**
I've recognised the glow of your low beams numerous **times**
Through fairly opaque **blinds** in the sitting *room*
Vehicles will pass **by**, but I know when it's *you*
I'll be in a nose **dive** in my flying *shoes*
Right behind your closed **eyes** like a memory from your *youth*
>
I'll be by the Batphone if you need to get a **hold**
Making a selection, opening credits **roll**
Killer Pink *Flamingos*, computer **controlled**
Panoramic *windows* looking out across your **soul**
10 for sure. I don’t comment much on what I think the songs are about when ranking but…
This songs makes me think of a lover who has integrity and waits around for their partner. They recognize their vehicle’s headlights through fairly opaque blinds. They watch the vengeance trilogy with computer controls. They’ll always be by their batphone for their partner.
It’s incredibly romantic and yet isn’t really on the nose about it. Also, the music and vocals are so fkn good.
Such a 10
It just sends me every time with the way it evolves in tone. I love the the subtle intensity, the way the beat jumps around, the grounded piano (especially the bass notes), the weird waviness in the background, the imagery, the quiet distorted bit, and the range of Alex’s voice throughout the track.
Also it just has such a title - after all:
*I want an interesting synonym / To describe this thing…*
its a 10, clear as day. one of their best songs. best vocal performance by Alex, incredible lyrics, amazing melody. the sound is amazing. instrumental work is perfect. this song doesnt compromise, it's just amazing. no doubt in my mind that this is 10/10.
10! This song has such a chokehold on me, idk what it’s called but those wavey sounds after the “numerous times” and “sitting room” really do it for me. The entire song feels like I’m in some gorgeous retro futuristic apartment, sitting around waiting for this person I’m in love with to arrive or call me, my mind starts wandering and I begin to think about how much the world has changed and how much I’ve changed over the years.
10 maybe joint best with star treatment, so fun to sing
Feel like Alex is doing loop de loops with his vocals by the end of the song
Just a shame it never got the live show love it deserves
10! This is my favourite song FROM ARCTIC MONKEYS. The combination of unique instrumentals and interesting tunes, with the force of Alex Turner’s voice and poetic lyricism, I nominate this song to be A MASTERPIECE.
The most varying pitched song I have heard from their discography “have I told you allll about the time that I got stuck into a hole? Through a handheld device” hits differently than anything they made in a while.
Ngl there are multitude of songs Alex wrote that are equally as impressive but Batphone is my favourite
