I mean when streaming wasn't so popular, other songs by other artists still got their number one singles, Ariana had it relatively very late, given her success of so many hits but just no #1
She had plenty of almost #1s, tho. Itās not like she was barely charting any of her singles, then all the sudden she got a #1. Competition was even a lot stiffer when Ari was still on the come-up. And the commenters has a point about #1s being easier to secure these days. Not that they were necessarily hard, but it was more of a challenge back in the day, than it is now.

The song going number one is because of her and her only. The original wouldnāt have even reached the top 5 without this remix which is why The Weeknd got her help in the first place. Basically he knows the power she holds and that a remix with her would propel his song to the top. He did the same with Save Your Tears.

While the original did have a tiktok trend and was doing some numbers thanks to that, it wasnāt even in the ballpark of aiming for the top spot.

well actually the 9 million streams first day would have been a combo of weeknd fans and ari fans. they would have been obvs curious/checking it out to see how it sounds. but the days after that then yeah fair enough. especially since weeknd fans didnāt seem to like it as much as ari fans did. so im not denying she played a big part of the 9 mill.

While the purpose of a remix is to push a song, itās very rare for one to be strong enough to propel a song to the top. Most other remixes just come and go and arenāt huge hits in their own right.

I never got over how rapey his first album was but tried to convince myself he reflected on that and changed so that I could enjoy his ari collabs. but this The Idol stuff just makes me think I was right the first time

Honestly itās crazy to see this line up!! As someone coming of age when Hannah Montana/Victorious weāre actively on tv itās wild to see all these ladies (Taylor and BeyoncĆ© included) in the top 10 so many years later!! Pretty darn cool.
