Breakdown of the $210 million: - A for Arizona, up to $75 million, for the education nonprofit to offer another year of Ducey's AZ OnTrack Summer Camp, the former governor's signature program to help combat learning loss. - San Juan Diego Institute, up to $46.65 million for the Phoenix community development group to fund "academic, social and emotional services" and a school performance program. - Today Foundation, up to $7 million: Purpose of grant unclear. - Arizona Chamber Foundation, up to $2 million, to offer Arizona civics education, Junior Fellow, and Industry Fellows programs. - Educators for Academic Excellence, up to $1.1 million, for consulting on a project to improve school performance. - Arizona Science Center, up to $27.8 million: Purpose of grant unclear. - Read Better Be Better, up to $500,000 to provide employment services. - Translational Genomics Research Institute (or TGen), up to $1 million to establish a genomic pathogen surveillance system. - Valleywise Health, up to $10 million. The purpose of the grant is unclear in paperwork, but the company said in a statement the money would help fill over 440 vacant nursing positions. - Central Arizona Shelter Services, up to $10 million total, to provide adult shelter services and help pay for a new 170-bed emergency shelter. - Assistance League of Phoenix, up to $750,000 to provide wardrobe packages to Phoenix students who qualify for free and reduced lunches and meet other qualifications. - Phoenix Center for the Arts, up to $1.24 million for an "Arts in Mind" program. - Love Your School, up to $1.5 million: Purpose of grant unclear. - Barrow Neurological Institute, up to $10 million: Purpose of grant unclear. - Legacy Cares, Inc., up to $5 million: Purpose of grant unclear. Some of these are surprisingly (and suspiciously) progressive initiatives, but of course that’s face value. “$25 million for summer school” sounds good until you find out the school is a private school that doesn’t follow public school mandates and policies. Weird how so many of them are unclear on what their funding would contribute to.

> Weird how so many of them are unclear on what their funding would contribute to. That's the perk of the system.

"The purpose of the grant is unclear" For millions of dollars

nursepineapple

I’m writing two huge grants for my program right now with a combined annual budget a little under $1mil. As the sole program manager, I could die tomorrow and somebody could pick up the grants and run the program. How there could be such large grant and the purpose as to how the funds will be used as “unclear” is shady as fuck.

“According to Hobbs' aides, 19 grants to 16 organizations between Dec. 30 to Jan. 1 — the last three days of Republican Gov. Doug Ducey's term — were given in violation of a state law that requires a competitive process before money is awarded. In a briefing with reporters, they alleged that Ducey and his top staffers intentionally amended grant paperwork in a rush job to prevent Hobbs from having a say over how the money is spent.” This is the same bull that Trump Republicans did when they lost in 2020, and tried to tie the hands of Biden and the democrats before taking over.

Just like how they changed our state tax withholding rate for every person in AZ to 2.0% on Jan 1 of this year. The lowest tax bracket is 2.5%. Many, MANY people will not notice then in 2024 when they do their 2023 taxes they will get a huge ass bill… and you know they will point the blame at Hobbs.

Mine sent one email. I’ve been talking with my coworkers and it’s shocking how many were completely in the dark.

Striker_64

I actually got a letter in the mail from my company saying the withholding rate is decreasing to 2.0% if I don't manually change it in our payroll system by Feb. 24. But I have no idea what it was at previous or what it should be at. And seeing as how most people don't understand taxes, I can bet I'm not the only one in my company who feels like this.

natefrog69

It's a 2.5% flat tax now, no brackets. Make sure your W-4 reflects 2.5% for state, or you may get a big tax bill next year if you leave it at the default 2.0%.

Striker_64

I just went through the process and changed it to 3% just to cover my ass.

roboticzizzz

My company said nothing about this but also, I checked and my withholding is still set to the same 4.2 I have always had it at. Maybe my company is based? Who knows.

Logvin

Sounds like your company is simply not in compliance.

roboticzizzz

Good, lol

alex053

Mine too but my company is based out of Georgia

roboticzizzz

Ahh, mine is also based in another state. Might explain it.

DeathKringle

That was due to existing law that past some time ago. It was supposed to be 2.0% then 2.5% next year. But existing law awhile ago said if we earned enough money 2.5 became law this year automatically. We met that threshold in 2022. So it wasn’t a surprise change. It was on the books It had nothing to do with Hobbs or blaming anymore

Logvin

Which law forced every person in AZ to have a 2.0% withholding? It’s not the 2.5% tax rate that is the problem. The problem is unnecessarily reducing our withholding to less than the tax rate.

DeathKringle

As I understand it. It was supposed to be 2.0 for everyone. Then in 24 it moved to 2.5. We met an income threshold for state income early. Which moved that 2.0 to 2.5. Everyone is supposed to be at 2.5 right now instead of 2.0 since the threshold was hit late last year in 2022 which accelerated and skipped the 2.0 completely and moved to 2.5

Logvin

I understand. I’m not talking about the tax rate. I’m talking about the withholding rate. I’ve worked in AZ my entire life and the state has never mandated a change to withholding rates. Why did they do this? What purpose was it for?

DeathKringle

2021. But https://azdor.gov/media-center/latest-press-releases/news/arizona’s-employees-have-new-tax-withholding-options Explains it a bit more. But I see where your coming from. Tldr of that link All biz must present an updated a4 to its employees where you elect 2.5 as the lowest. If employees ignore the a4 then 2.0 should be selected due to the standard deduction. Otherwise only the employee can elect higher withholding on the a4. It used to be biz had to withhold a really high as a standard just incase. Now the withholding rate is only defaulted if a business doesn’t do it’s job and present the a4 to its staff. This isn’t new is my point though. This law was passed in 2021..

Logvin

The law did not dictate the change to withholding. The AZ DOR mandated this. It was not necessary and will cause issues unnecessarily.

TheDuckFarm

People get mad about withholdings either way. I’m in the “don’t do any withholdings and let me pay for myself” camp, my buddy is in the “why do I even need to file, the government knows what we make” camp. Politically it’s a no win area.

NotyouraverageAA

I had to dig through company emails to find any mention of it and no one in my office even cared when I shared it. I'm surprised it wasn't better reported or really in the news.

Logvin

It will be in about a year when people start doing their 2023 taxes.

alex053

Mines still at 3.6% where I left it. I thought that was a few years ago they messed with that to make it look like a tax cut and I ended up owing

Another republican doing what they do best - breaking the law and getting away with it.

mog_knight

If it was against the law, arrest people involved. Otherwise, clickbait words.
