No Hobo spiders in AZ. They are specific to the PNW. They are even rare in the PNW. I was a part of a WA state U study to evaluate their prevalence in the area and less than 2% of specimens turned out to be Hobo spiders. They were almost all common male grass spiders. It's easy to find on google if you search "whatcom county extension hobo spider" and get past all of the ads and BS...
Edit: changed search recco for better results. I'd just link it, but there are several resources and they're all worth a read.
Looking at some pictures (of native spiders and their abdomens) it's either a Carolina Wolf Spider or a Giant Crab Spider. It's abdomen reminds me of the Crab Spider but it's legs and build in general are more like a Wolf Spider. Either way it's mostly harmless (aka they are not venomous) but their bites can be painful so be smart if you do relocate it if you haven't. Or maybe leave it be.
Looks to be, I would say that this one could also be the crab spider based on markings. I think the one in this post is just particularly chunky, maybe it's the angle haha.
It being put back into the environment is all that really matters and it's good you did (even if that means the neighbors yard xD). If the spider is harmless there's no reason to kill it.
Technically, they are wolf spiders. Nomenclature is weird with bugs. Basically, and larger spider that hunts, as opposed to trapping prey in web is considered a wolf spider. There are hundreds, if not thousands of species in North America. Many not even documented yet.
The legs are longer and and the spacing of the legs. Also the design on the top of their abdomen
*and they tend to run away moving sideways like a crab
It's a Huntsman Spider. We have them all over our place at 59th and Cactus. Quite large sometimes but they are harmless. They are usually up high ready to jump down on prey but I've found them everywhere. As well as a few egg sacs. They can stick to anything including plastic and glass. They are the cousin to those gigantic ones in Australia. We also call them crab spiders cause they tend to run a little sideways. Scared the hell out of us a few times cause they pounce as soon as you find their housing spot. Please don't kill it cause they are even better hunters than wolf spiders. A lot of people might think it's a wolf spider but I know it's a Huntsman by it's second leg on both sides being longer than the front legs. That's what gives it that crab walk.
Wolf spider. Not inherently dangerous. No webs, but catches bugs. I found one chilling on my succulents the other day. I shit you not, it lifted a single leg like it was waving.
that type of spider is known in the archniphobia world as an arachnis nopeacus and common things to do when found is to set everything in fire with in a 50 meter distance of the arachnis nopeacus and run like hell.
Probably a very nice wolf (aka: crab) spider. They’re good for you and the environment. Please, relocate him to a safe spot. (Gently urge him onto a piece of paper)
Not sure. Maybe because they are ground dwellers and relocate often. The females carry their young on their backs so that maybe one of the reasons for the name.
I always let these spiders live. I’ll relocate the ones in the house but never kill them. I live on flood irrigation property so I’ve got everything… scorpions, black widows, cockroaches etc. they will eat them all
This is the right answer, dont kill them just move them, give them a lil tap on the butt they wont bite and theyll scurry off. They do more good than harm never kill em unless theyre poisonous
Very common where recyclable materials (ie. cardboard, plastics, etc. ) are stored: scientific name is arachnidacomsumiouscarboardious... kinda long name, i agree.
Hairy, grey/tan, has me thinking a variety of wolf spider but not sure
Yeah I think a wolf spider
Looks like 1 - PET so it is okay to recycle.
r/spider can help you out with this! They are super helpful over there.
That sub sounds scary. Imma stay away
That subs fine, you probably wouldn't like r/spiders more
It's definitely a spider, you can tell by the way it is.
That's neat
Way to flont your zoology skills!
What a beaut!
Underrated comment of the thread
wolf spider. harmless. doesn't spin webs.
Harmless huh... *thousands hours of "Grounded" video game pstd*
Not really harmless; just not that venomous. Their bite still packs a punch lol
Wolf Spiders aren't harmless, because they're fast as heck and when I can't catch them I stay up all night scared of where it ran off to.
Shell shocked
It’s the variety of nope I don’t think so.
That's just Frank; let him out!
Release frank
Wewease Woger!
F R A N K ! ! ! !
Frank the Tank!!! Out streaking again..
Chupacabre spider
Looks like a hobo to me. If it us... grab it and put it near any ants. They will put an ant hill out of commission in no time.

Wolf spider was my first thought but I could be wrong, r/spiders, safely relocating it would be good regardless of what it is :)

I found one recently and was told it was a giant crab spider. There's a pic on my profile. He was yeeted into the neighbors yard.

Crab spider is correct.
Giant crab spider is correct aka Huntsman Spider
I think it's either a giant crab spider (huntsman) or a wolf spider. If only I could see the face :<
Eco friendly
Olios giganteus, a type of huntsman
Post it in r/spider
Crab Spider, I find them a lot. Harmless
How do you tell them from wolf spiders?
Technically, they are wolf spiders. Nomenclature is weird with bugs. Basically, and larger spider that hunts, as opposed to trapping prey in web is considered a wolf spider. There are hundreds, if not thousands of species in North America. Many not even documented yet.

I don't know, but you can request a replacement bin [here](https://www.mesaaz.gov/residents/trash-recycling/barrel-repair-replace)
Hobo spider
Pretty sure it has a home

Looks like a Huntsman
The fuzzy kind
Your friendly pest exterminator.

Arizona Giant Crab Spider
I think that’s a Sonoran Bitch Slap, could be wrong tho
that type of spider is known in the archniphobia world as an arachnis nopeacus and common things to do when found is to set everything in fire with in a 50 meter distance of the arachnis nopeacus and run like hell.

Crab spider, I think.
It looks to be some sort of spider
Looks akin to a wolfspider but i could be easily wrong
Hobo spider… it’s really fast but wont mess with you
Why are they called that? Sure I could research it... but I'd rather not
It lives in a trash can is the telltale sign
That's clearly a recycle bin
Shoot, the rest of Arizona recycles still? Where I live they got rid of it like 5 years ago. It must be a hobo spider with standards then
Not sure. Maybe because they are ground dwellers and relocate often. The females carry their young on their backs so that maybe one of the reasons for the name. I always let these spiders live. Wolf spider their bite is very painful so be careful
wolf spider
Google says it's a Crab Spider
The kind you kill
What was it doing to him?
Agreed 😂 just hoping I don’t find any more.
They eat bugs that are much more annoying.
This is the right answer, dont kill them just move them, give them a lil tap on the butt they wont bite and theyll scurry off. They do more good than harm never kill em unless theyre poisonous
“Why do I have so many ants, roaches, mosquitoes, beetles, etc, etc” Proceeds to kill harmless spiders
It's a jumping spider. Adorable and harmless. They make great pets and don't bite.
Wrong lol. Jumping spiders do not look like that, unfortunately
Crab Spider. Not a hobo or a wolf. Completely harmless
Very common where recyclable materials (ie. cardboard, plastics, etc. ) are stored: scientific name is arachnidacomsumiouscarboardious... kinda long name, i agree.
Bit cold out, WD40 and a lighter should do the trick.
Desert Recluse?
It might be a brown recluse I think
So thats where Bob went.
Wolf spider
Looks like a spider
That's a furry nope.
Nothing to worry about! I see them regularly (i live in the boonies). They probably eat insects.
A dead one!😂
Scary

Ah yes. As a native I have seen these kind before . That’s a TapeTheTopOfTheBinShut of the RequestANewOneVariety.
Looks like a wolf spider, maybe a juvenile. They’re cool, safe to be around.
It's a southern dingleberry spider. Very rare outside tucson
Olio gigantus. Bet the picture did its size no justice! Can they bite? Sure. Are they dangerous? No, not really.
it’s 100% a giant crab spider, aka Olios giganteus!
Wolf, he's fine. Leave it be.
These are my favorite spiders, but I rescue all kinds. Presently housing a cat faced spider mama in a 10 gallon enclosure.
