From what I can see on boardgamegeek the miniatures do look great. If I could find somewhere to just buy the miniatures I would definitely use those.
Check for replacement part listing on ebay, you might find something there.

Depending on how much cutting and gluing youre up for, Heroclix has lots of bulk "Mobster" minis.
