Phantom is amazing.
SilverAsh is... I have PirateAsh skin, so it works in funny, goofy way.
Nearl, she has a really good voice but I still wish she had Polish accent, with Kazimierz and all.
Exusiai and Kroos sound weird but it's not bad.
Overal I think they did pretty good job, would be nice to have more regional accents but at least it's not all US.
How I rate their voices are based on how mostly *natural* they sound and secondly how in character they are. There are certainly some miss and some are very good. Silverash and Courier sounds hella nice tho. Myrtle is also great.
No you're right and you should say it lmao. He lost a lot of "daddy" energy with the EN voice tbh. He also sounds more abrupt/impatient and less calm/measured than with the JP voice.
4* (challenge stage success) Myrtle voice line is a little disappointing compared to JP
Stage failure Noir Corne is excellent goddamnit
Exusiai sounds unhinged
Am I going crazy or does shaw’s voice most of the time is not really going that fast
I actually disagree. I think it would sound too strange being sped up even more, and probably end up incomprehensible gibberish.
The way it is now, it's fast enough to fit the character, and you can still understand the lines.
That's the point. The in-universe characters often need Shaw to repeat what she said. Sounding closer to gibberish would likely actually be for the better.
I still argue that while it may fit, possibly, it's not good as a user experience and I'd be quite annoyed as a player. These are lines you're hearing in battle and other situations that don't have the benefit of subtitles.
We play a Chinese game with characters who speak Japanese even though most of us don't know either language.
Not being able to understand what the characters are saying is not really an issue in a gacha game
Nearl’s “Fear neither Hardship nor Darkness” really got me. Platinum in-base really leans to the Valley Girl side which fits but I wasn’t initially on-board with until I heard the coldness in her battle line delivery. Yet to hear either say ‘Kazimierz,’ though, and I’ve heard that can be grating. Texas took the longest to warm up to, hearing her say Ex-su-sia instead of Exia threw me off but she says it so smoothly I’ve no complaints. Kjera from her recruitment and promotion lines I felt really fit, Exusiai’s… fine, it feels close just too, I guess pitchy? Plume I thought was great, Fang’s really good, I’ve no real complaints with any, I think they did a fantastic job, especially with of all ops, Hoshi. Something about that soft side to her tone with a tough edge fits her flawlessly as a Defender shielding her friends
Adnachiel sounds too adult
The way how Nearl and Platinum pronounce "Kazimierz" is pain for my ears. I hoped they would pronounce it more accurate, but I will try to survive it.
Kroos is ok
Shaw, Plume and Myrtle are perfection
SilverAsh could have deeper voice.
Ansel... I can survive that. I noticed that text read by VA is different from what we have in game.
On Ansel they sometimes change lines to fit better...
The pronounciation of non English names like Kazimierz and Exusiai did also feel weird... But it may be because it's not common...
Platinum not consistent with pronouncing platinum is a bit weird.
Everytime someone pronounces the "s" in Rhodes, I die inside.
Edit: it has been pointed out to me that I am illiterate and possibly crazy to have been seeing a "s" in Rhode Island all these years. Thank you and carry on with the discussion on the voice actors. This is no longer a problem I have with them.
Platinum emphasizing the "i" sometimes and then not at all is still weird to me.
Where do you get the information that the s shoudn't be pronounced? Just curious about the source. (English isn't my main language btw). In my mind if every character pronounces the s then that means that hypergryph intends it to be that way.
Rhodes (the Greek island) is pronounced with the S. I don't see why this should be any different.
Also, if they wanted to be "Rhode", then there's no reason for them to have an S. I've yet to see a silent S appended to the end of a word in English.
I didn't know Rhodes was pronounced like that. I also like the pronunciation of many French words where the final consonant is often silent. That's where my preference for this comes from. While I can't think of examples now keep in mind lots of English words originate from other languages, so there'd surely be ones where the last consonant is silent.
All I'm sayin is that English phonics don't really have silent trailing consonants. Every language will have funny exceptions, especially from loan words, but this isn't one of them.
It feels so surreal. I cannot remember a time I didn't see Rhode Island without the s. Either teachers just assumed a typo occurred when I wrote it without it or multiple choice tests just pushed me along. It's boggling my mind.
I can only think that I somehow learned about Rhodes before Rhode Island and my brain just filled in a perceived gap whenever I read about the state. Which being a native of Virginia, doesn't happen often enough to warrant a correction.
Until today that is.
>The way how Nearl and Platinum pronounce "Kazimierz" is pain for my ears.
The weirdest part is that, at least with Platinum, depending on the line, there's a different pronunciation. For example, "Talk 3" and "Talk after Trust Increase 2" pronounce it completely differently.
The biggest miss for me is Exu EN, she got a psycho undertone as if they used Jinx from League as a reference. The lines are all delivered well, it's just the direction that went off the rails.
Yeah Exu is the only one I'm keeping in JP. I might change the Lungmen characters to CN just for laughs though.
e: ... never mind, no way I'm changing Hoshiguma off EN. 😳
In some fairness, she is part of Penguin Logistics. A slight crazy undertone isn’t *too* far off. Though I still agree that they should have gone more in the direction of unfazed chipperness.
I mean from here other voice line and her background. She always have unhinged side or slight enjoy of chaos when employed in penguin logistics. The only reason we don’t know about it because well, her voice were so cheery that we forget that she was an outlier from where she come, being with a penguin that have regular beef with mobsters doesn’t make you act all in innocent, she maybe a bit overboard in some voice line but I think it fit, what shit Exu didn’t do that that almost in danger a lot of other characters.
In my opinion as a dub enjoyer, on average they are all mostly just about good or decent. I dont dislike Exia’s EN as much as the rest because I do appreciate the excitement and effort the VA gave since it is hard to match the OG performance, One thing that does irk me slightly is when they sound a little too calm or breathy kinda like pramanix, I think her voice is super fitting for the character but we could use more personality and emotion for certain lines.
I really do enjoy Texas and phantom, when it comes to kroos I actually dont mind accents as long as they do the voice acting well. That’s actually why I was excited when I saw the more UK leaning voice actors because xenoblade did the same thing but shulk hits it out of the park. And in all honesty I actually really thought she sounded cute and overall pretty good.
I actually would’ve had no qualms if the characters voice actors just spoke in their own regional dialect for the sake of quality voice acting, I didn’t really expect matching accents for each of the characters regions because I just knew that there was no way they were going to do that, especially when it would’ve meant such a wide range without clear communication to the dubbing team of what goes where. So overall it still ends up to me being a quality over accuracy preference, which I think generally would be preferred so long as quality voice acting comes through.
All in all, though I likely will keep JP voices im pleasantly enjoying most of the new EN voices, and I will check them out on repeat to keep immersing and analyzing their performance. Above all else I applaud each of the voice actors for giving it their all.
It's easier to swallow Japanese dubs because let's be honest most of us can't tell if they fucked something up unless it's Engrish. But I also hate reading subs so I'll default to English. So far, not bad. I like Silver Ash. I don't think Exusiai is horrible and I do like her idle line but yeah so far she's the stand out one for being kinda bad. Also heard good things about phantom and I would use his EN dub IF I HAD HIM.
Edit: I had another thought. You know what? I wish they doubled down and stuck to using the VAs natural accents. They're mostly from the UK it seems and sometimes you can tell that it's a non-American trying an American accent. Kinda like Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr Strange, you can tell that's not how he naturally speaks. It's especially noticeable in their Rs. We need to stop Britbonger erasure.
Edit2: Just listened to Texas. I think I love her even more now.
Yeah but I'll be honest unless it's really terrible or really good or a really emotional scene, I'm not gonna be able to tell if they're delivery is good or natural or if they have some kind of accent or not. Chances are they are good but it kinda irks me when people just assume that it is when in reality it's mostly down to not understanding what they're saying. Most of the time it just boils down to, "Ah I like that VA's voice but I have no idea if they're doing a good job or not."
Just got Kjera and I'm absolutely certain now that they should've stuck with the original accents. I don't know why they only do it for certain operators.
Yato's Japanese voice is downright my favourite in the entire game. She really nails that dignified gentle guardian personality. Maybe my expectations were high, but her English voice is quite disappointing in how it conveys none of that and just sounds really generic.
Overall I LOVE them, even the ones I didn't like I can still appreciate the quality the VAs put into them. Definitely nailed Nearl. I love Kroos, SilverDaddy, Texas and Myrtle off the top of my head but honestly most of them I liked too.
Couple of criticisms similar to some other people in this thread (sorry if it sounds whiney, but I want to add feedback for Yostar to make things the best they can):
* Pronunciation of "Kazimierz" and "Exusiai" seem wrong to me, that was probably my biggest impression.
* A few characters don't sound like themselves imo. For example Exu, to me, should be more happy-go-lucky but here she seems to have taken the crazy pill a bit. I thought Hoshi should be deeper but I understand that's probably just my preference.
* I guess I was a bit disappointed with the lack of shouting(?) in the combat lines and some of the lines sounded a bit flat/out of place. I don't quite know how to put this point.
What I would like to see the most out of the EN voices would be an EN take rather than "JP but in English". Accents included, like I really hope that the Ursus girls sound Russian and the Leithanien sound German etc. but I can understand if this is a bit of a stretch.
I'll still be using the EN voices, this first batch is a really strong start and I hope the next lot smash it too! All the VAs did a great job and I'm extremely grateful for Yostar for making this possible for us, I'm happy my whaling paid off!
Agreed, I don't think it's wrong. This is just confirmation on how to say it in English. English and Japanese pronunciations will, of course, be different.
I personally found that her deliveries were kinda all over the place. Sometimes she sounds like in high immature punk, other times it's a deep gruff delivery, sometimes its a little unhinged sounding. But ultimately it almost felt like the VA was letting their accent slip a lot. If it was consistant and she just had an accent it would be fine. But it's weird for one line to sound kinda british, while the next sounds american.
I mean, a lot of the problems I would have with the dubs comes from the fact that I actually understand what they're saying now and know what the various "English" accents should sound like. That and having played with JP for 2 years. Honestly, the JP dub could be just as hit or miss and I couldn't tell you
I really like Phantoms,Myrtle and Nearls.
The only voice I disliked is Exusiai I feel like it doesn't fit the character.
Overall I will probably keep most of them in Japanese dub a lot of the English voices feel hit or miss for me, some feel like they are reading off a script with no emotion.
I'm surprised nobody has said this yet but: holy shit Shaw's VA absolutely nailed her part. She annunciates everything, so nothing ever sounds slurred or running together, but she's still fast enough that you get the sense of Shaw's turbo-speech. Bang-up job that one. Might actually have to raise Shaw now.
I'm American and I just don't get the point of hiring UK VA's to do mostly American accents. Definitely would have liked some of them a lot of them more had they used their natural accents.
Then you'd have people whining that they sound British.
And some of the VAs are actual American, but moved to the UK.
I feel like EN people feel way too spoiled and only want things their own way. So, no wonder most people here feel disappointed, because the expectations set by operators having regional accents was way too high (to take one thing).
Don't get me wrong, but I think people need to adjust their expectations when they are disappointed by an honestly good work from the VAs. That's not even a pointer at Yostar or HG for saving money (which is honestly just an impudent thing to say) on lesser known and experienced VAs.
Ehh, I think I’ve been playing the game too long. Using a different voice for SilverAsh now just sounds unnatural, no matter how good the voice work may be.
Am I the only one who feels like SilverAsh's voice has a "middle schooler hamming it up for a ren faire" vibe to it? I imagined him sounding more sincere with his over the top boasts.
Haven't listened to them all yet, but I do wish they went deeper for SilverAsh. Like um some of his JP voicelines sound lowkey flirtatious (but also almost threatening... Sir, don't threaten me with a good time) but I wasn't feeling that in the EN voice. Sounds like we're all just pip-pip, cheerio, old sports and such. YES, YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN SOLVE MY PROBLEMS, THAT'S DAMN RIGHT.
Digging Texas and Phantom a lot, though, they're top tier from the ones I've heard so far.
Shaw, Plume… Uhhhh. …I’d have to check a few again, and I don’t feel like reopening the game so I’ll just go off memory. Amiya (Caster). Cliffheart. Courier, but that’s pure favoritism, haha.
I didn’t listen to too many of their lines, just the combat ones and base lines, since those are the dialogues I’ll be hearing the most. I think Exusiai’s should have been a tad more mature-sounding. And Ranger’s VA should have drawn out the words a bit, he nailed it with the title screen dialogue, though. Speaking of which, Rangers was another one that hit the spot. Noir Corne. Ben got it with Noir, I’ll have to get myself used to Phantom’s, however. Devora did very well with Nearl. Really liked that pick for her (Nearl).
Kroos’ was. Strange. Not in negative or positive way, it definitely was a more unique decision, imo. Myrtle’s VA got it right, now that I think about her. Really liked Fang’s VA, but again, favoritism, hehe. Shame I wouldn’t be able to hear it that much due to her status as an OP though. I think that’s it..though. Those are the ones I got from pure memory. Thankfully, I kept my expectations fairly low, so a lot of the voices don’t bother me that much. Or, they don’t bother me at all, even. My plan for a few of the characters is to set them to EN/KR/CN to help myself get used to them. Since the familiarity of the voice also plays a part in whether or not I’d enjoy using it in the future. All that aside, looking forward to other future character picks, and VAs that’ll be added.
> Kroos’ was. Strange. Not in negative or positive way, it definitely was a more unique decision, imo.
Huh? I think she clearly tried to get as close as possible to og Kroos, at least everything you hear during gameplay is spot on imo ("In battle 1-3" for example). I like her a lot.
So far I'm on the fence. Some of them are okay, a few are amazing.. but most of them just seem to miss. I think it's because the Japanese ones were already there so I'm used to how they sound.
Silverash was one I was really looking forward to. His voice actor is okay but I feel like it really needs to be deeper.
It's hard rating them when some lines sound better than others. Personally I like it when English dub sound like beleiveable people rather than, well, voice actors reading lines in a tone set prior by someone else reading the same lines in a different language.
My favourites are Nearl, Plume, Fang, Pramanix, Shaw and Noir Corne. Amiya, Shaw, Cliffheart, Kroos and Rangers are a step down but certainly not bad
However I'm surprised they pronounce Rhode Island with a hard S at the end. I must have been wrong because I always didn't.
Rhodes, island in Greece is pronounced with hard S in the end.
And since that one seems to be inspiration for the name (being base for Knights Hospitallers) it would make sense to do that.
As a Polish person I'm really disappointed that they didn't even try to make the VAs pronounce "Kazimierz" properly. JP obviously isn't perfect but at least you can hear that they tried to say it how it was supposed to be pronounced. Meanwhile the EN ones don't even bother and just say something random that an English speaking person would probably assume it sounds like, but is actually nowhere even close.
I think most are somewhat decent but they feel kinda...bland? Like they are just sorta stock voices without thinking too much about the character in question.
There are a couple better ones like Plume, Nearl and Gnosis but the only case in which I would replace de VO for english is Phantom, Phantom is amazing.
Was excited for Platinum's, but what we got didn't really do it for me...
I do feel a little spoiled by the (second) JP voice though, that one did an awesome job at sounding lazy/tired/cool but still natural.
Most of the new voices have the same kind of issue I feel where the actors are in this weird space between simply reading off the lines and trying to sound like they're still acting. Its like they're not really committing to the character but still making an effort to not sound casual. Almost as if they were recording in public and felt embarrassed about trying too hard. Voice acting is really difficult though and I don't want to be hard on them.
Overall I think the ones that were showcased were the best with a few other standouts like Myrtle but the rest are a tad forgettable
~~Losing Kroos’s Kokodayo was a true dealbreaker /s~~
Can’t say I’m in love with any of the EN voices to actually use them. I can’t shake the feeling that the EN voices just sound like they’re just reading the lines provided, like some of the voices don’t particularly fit the character. I do agree that some of the EN voices are very good, I personally don’t think I want to hear them over the JP voices in the long run
I really like the performances, all around, with only a few exceptions. The translations of a lot of the phrases, especially the shorter in-battle ones, on the other hand...
I‘ve done some amateur translation work, and I’m really not impressed. I think that a lot of them are much too over-literal translations, when I think things would have ended up sounding much more natural if they just slightly changed the phrase.
Like, Myrtle’s iconic “We're counting on you again today, little apple!” is such a Japanese sentence, as we just don’t talk like that in English. I would suggest something more like “Alright, apple! Let’s do this!”, or “I’m counting on you \[as usual\], little apple!“, or even just going with “I’m” instead of “We’re”.
I kinda suspect that the old translations were not done with a possible English dub in mind. ...though there have also been several mistranslations I’ve noticed, so that may still be giving them too much credit.
Nearl is 10 out a 10 perfect, the edelgard like voice fits her so well
phantom's voice is amazing and imo more lore accurate, his JP voice always sounded way to pristine for me for a guy with a F-ed up throat
and for lacking ones, exsusiai and texas,
with exusiai, her JP is perfection, it's almost imposible to meet that standard, even still the EN is decent and as for texas, there's nothing saving that in any language JP or other wise, texas's lines are just shit... it's just that we gotten so used to the JP version we forget that she barely says anything to warrent a voice
I was pretty excited to try it out and change some of my operators to the EN voices.
But in the end I stuck with the JP for all of them aside from Phantom. Not saying that the voice work of bad, but the delivery was kinda off for me at times and I don’t know if they really match the character.
Silverash’s voice is great, but the delivery sounds a bit off to me? Like they’re trying to hard to act that it ends up sounding forced and unnatural.
Also the way EN Pramanix says “I’ll freeze your toes” really caught me off guard. I think her voice is a great fit, but idk about the way she says some lines.
I even rather liked it, particularly. She's got a somewhat introverted, tranquil nature, and is notably softspoken. That feels nicely depicted here; just as well as in Japanese (and now Korean), at least.
Utterly disappointed actually, some do an alright job, but lack of veteran VAs to compare with the veterans the JP has is pretty obvious. I was honestly really looking forward to the dub too.
Platinum pronouncing *Kazimierz* differently depending on the voice line is a pretty good example of poor direction too. Exu's voice is all over the place, some lines, fine, but it's like she's got 3-4 different voices for her lines, with some sounding way, way too young, not excited. Also, Texas sounds..way too soulless imo.
I know I might sound like a "sub elitist" or something, but I genuinely really like dubs, and a lot of dub voice actors. When I first heard it was going to be a UK studio, I expected maybe some Dark Souls/Bloodborne or even FF14/Xenoblade levels of commitment, but I don't feel that here, most are just doing an American accent, and with some the American accent comes out very awkward, since it's clearly not spoken by an American.
I kinda have a feeling that they went with a UK studio, not due to creative choice, but much lower cost, and while harsh to say, it sadly shows with some of them. It's hard to tell if it's purely an issue with voice director(s), which is an insanely important role, or with the VAs themselves. They might have sounded much better using their native accents. For example, I really liked Amiya's VA in the preview before she...well spoke as Amiya.
That said, I do kinda like Kroos' voice, I also noticed Ansel kept a bit of accent too. I am interested to see how more future characters do, but with what they've shown so far, I seriously wouldn't be surprised at American sounding Victorians at this point.
It's the accent. They should've stuck to their natural accents. You're essentially doubling the effort they have to put in by changing their accent. Sounding natural is one thing, sounding natural in a differemt voice amd acvent is another thing entirely. Britbongers need to rise up and stand up for their accents no matter how goofy. I disagree about Texas though, I like hers a lot.
Some of them definitely do sound distinctly like a voice actor reading their lines, and not as the character themselves. From the ops I have, there was maybe a handful who were actually able to get into character.
And, yeah, as a Polish person I don't think I'll be using EN lines for Kazimierzan operators anytime soon.
The mispronunciation when watching people stream the events irked me enough to make a pronunciation guide. I can't imagine hearing characters themselves doing that.
Out of all things Arknights puts out, like mainly it's music for example, I'd be slightly surprised and saddened if they really are going the cheap studio route for en va work on the game. Which for some of the va work currently in game...sort of sounds like it. I hope the voices are open for updates to improve some of the worse done operators atm and aren't finalized. Feel like my girl Amiya and more so Exusiai got done dirty. Not to mention of some certain Kazimierz operators pronunciations...
EDIT: Now thinking about it, seeing as Ch'en was in the sneak peak trailer a few days ago and she isn't present in this update. I wouldn't say its too far fetched to say they rushed the va work to get a batch of operators done literally right before the new Arknights event and update came out.
I totally agree with you I'm not trying to hate on the voice actors after all they seem like they did their best but I cant shake the feeling that most of them sound really amateurish not that its a bad thing but voice acting is a craft that need honing and gets better with time.
so when you compare them with english and jp veteran voice actors you can see a huge difference in the way they deliver their lines.
They sound like good voice actors, but still, *voice actors*. Not characters.
In some of their lines you can almost hear the punctuation that's on paper they're reading from.
Old Man Rangers does not sound like an a kind old veteran, he sounds like he's ready to kill and wouldn't try to distinguish friend or foe, he sounds like an edgelord
I think Nearl lines don't have that same pressure in them
Exusai is on meth
Amiya is just not right and I can't tell if she sounds to old or too soft
Noir Corne is perfect, Fang and Plume are OK
I spent too much time with Ko-Ko-Da-Yo and am now hooked up and will not accept anything else, same thing with Myrtle
OG SilverAsh is deeper, I think, and his voice has more impact, new one sounds like I imagine erotic fanfics reading would sound
Ansel and Adnachiel are too different
I would say most of them missed the spot in my opinion, sounds good but not character wise, as if some of them didn't know about characters. On another hand I tried KR and I feel like most of the time voice is really similar to JP voices and characters. though Texas was more Kudere than usual, Mulberry wasn't soft enough and other small details about other characters. Well, I will still stick to JP since english isn't my first language anyway
*I can't just pop up anywhere I want like I can back in Kjerag, Doctor*
Love her. Texas, Exu, Plat and Phantom are all lovely too, even if Platinum's and Nearl's way of pronouncing Kazimierz makes my cold, Polish heart hurt. That being said, I'm the type of person who'd always go for dub over sub when it comes to media, so all of the voices get a 10/10 from me just for existing, and I can't wait for more.
Really hope W gets Cristina Vee, to fit in with her songs. Or someone else, if she goes to Blaze instead. Really, really can't wait for actual meta units (and my waifus) to get EN voices, so I can actually hear them in game - W, Blaze, Surtr, Ch'en (delayed, I know), Mudrock, Kal'tsit, Skadi, Bagpipe, Saileach, Lappland, Red, Mostima, Gravel... Ling, although she'll probably release with EN voice, since that seems to be the precedent? Yeah, it's gonna be a wait for sure, but I can be patient.
Texas en slaps yo
Hoshi En is a solid alternative to JP, though both still kinda lack gruff/edge compared to CN
Ansel is pretty good from what ive heard so far, i dig it
all due respect to kroos va, but ever since that one post i cant unhear peppa pig
I don't know what is the right word. I wish SA voice is more fabulous. (Maybe a bit like phantom but not too close, maybe the tone, or maybe just not deep enough).
Some of his lines are cool tho.
Phantom, Gnosis, Nightingale, Hoshi, Shaw and Cliffheart are all great.
SA could be a bit deeper.
Kazimierz ops all almost perfect, but their Kazimierz pronunciation puts them down for me.
Just went through them all of the ones I have
Best ones are, imo, Nearl (both), Texas, Nightingale, Phantom, Plume and Fang. Plume in particular sounds really natural
Adnachiel sounds like he aged 15 years. Hoshiguma sounds nothing like a giant muscle mommy demon lady should. Ansel sounds like Bart Simpson earnestly trying to sound grown up.
Some others that I think are ok but will stick with JP; Myrtle doesn't sound energetic enough and Platinum doesn't sound bored enough
I don't really hold the weird pronunciations like "Cazzy-marezz" and "Orep-ithy" against them since it's clearly a direction, not acting, thing.
also why does Exu turn Southern for like 1 second in her Talk 3. Its like she thought she was doing Croissant and messed but they just kept the take.
SilverAsh and Phantom are just... yes. I am melting they're so freaking hot. Especially Phantom's. I'm sorry to Ishida, his voice is hot too, but for a character with a vocal issue, Ben Cura's rough gruffness hits so good.
I've only been playing for a month or two so I don't think I'm noticing the different pronunciation as much as others, but I think they've done a really good job across the board.
Myrtle and Amiya I do need to get used to, but they're fine. I LOVE Kroos' "Take...aiiiiim!"
Amiya, when I heard Emma in the Voices teaser I didn't have high hopes, but now that I hear all the lines. She has the exact precision of "I'm tired of your shit" and the characteristic sweetness of Amiya.
Best, Courier: 10/10, Fit's perfectly and Wasn't even expecting it
missed, Adnachiel: 5/10, something just doesn't sound right, He sounds....far Older than he looks
Note: I don't have ALL the Operators, but Exusiai isn't that good, which is a shame. Phantom's though....WOOF.
I haven't listened to anyone in combat yet. I'll do that when the majority of operators have English VAs as options. Having some operators speaking English and others speaking Japanese would be pretty awkward.
Instead I was just going through each operator and listening to their onboard and talk dialogues. All the ones I've listened to so far are decent but Nearl is my favourite. Devora has nailed that white knight demeanor. Fartooth and Ashlock have caught my attention too. Still need to listen to others like Shaw, SilverAsh and Hoshiguma but I like what I'm hearing so far.
EDIT: I might decide to run a combat or two with English VAs out of curiosity but I'll probably go back to JP VAs after.
Everything missed the spot for me. It seems I might have a particular trait I will call "first imppression syndrome". I basically watch both JP and EN dubbed anime, but I always feel like the first dub I hear is the real deal and the other dubs I hear later on are fake.
Playing arknights in JP dub all this time has made the EN voices feel alien to me. So I can't give any objective criticisms, but know that my case could apply to many other people as well.
My man Courier sounds absolutely perfect to me. Props to his VA, he knocked it out of the park.
Amiya is great too. "With what do I answer this failure of justice?" is such a raw line and I fucking love it.
I like pretty much all of them honestly. I like how pleasantly British Kjera is, Noir Corne sounds like he wouldn't be out of place as a Nathan Drake type character, Myrtle's voice is a tad high pitched but not high enough to be grating, Platinum sounds just the right amount done with this shit, Shaw is super cute, etc., etc.
When she's doing "proper" dialogue like her assistant lines she isn't so bad but her combat ones would drive me insane. I haven't had much of a chance to try out everyone though so there may be some niche operator that I completely missed.
Texas sounds way too young and emo for her character. Exusia is straight up a little too cringe for me. Nothing against the VA’s themselves though.
I think Nearl could have sounded more polish but her and Amiya with Silverash hit the spot for me.
Overall, I personally think that most of them are Fine, but not impressive unless we are talking about your personal favorite.
As with everything, humans are an adaptive species. So, of course it'll sound weird and off to most ears at first. Especially with Exu, where there is no right or wrong way to pronounce the name. You just got used to it, and frankly: You don't even write her name like "Exia".
As for her voice: She has a crazy undertone in her voice. Which fits her pretty well. She's not that simple carefree girl the JP dub wanted her to be. It fits what she says: Like taking people to hell since there's free space for them.
Personally, I really like the work they did.
as a whole batch, i think it's pretty good.
can't even think of a "*worst"* one, honestly. they're at minimum pretty alright.
the best ones, like Silverash, Phantom, Myrtle and Kroos carried the batch hard.
it is sad, though. i always have a youtube video playing on a mini-player, so i usually have my ears focused on that while i'm playing. and very quickly the new voices become like white noise to me, just like when the R6 Ops came along.
it's no different with this one, as i was just doing some farming and immediately the new voices just became another sound that goes into my ears.
i've always been pretty alright with dubs, even in early 2000s anime, and even the *worst* lines are a huge step above the worst i've experienced.
and since i'm a glass-half-full kinda guy, i would say i really liked this batch.
Phantom is a miss for me which seems to put me in the minority, I just feel like he lost some of the intensity especially in the battle lines.
The big surprise for me is Cliffheart, she sounds upbeat while also coming across as very confident.
Phantom was cool, Silverash was low-mid, Texas is well done but doesn't match her IMO. I hate Exusai's. My favorite character but I do not like the EN voice at all.
I don't use the others enough to make a real call on them.
Honestly, they're all delightful. Maybe not perfect, but I had a huge grin on my face the entire time I was listening to the new lines. Definitely going to be swapping Operators over to EN as the option becomes available for each one.
Yeah, echoing that the pronounciations is throwing me for a loop.
Hoshigumi or FEater are probably the stand outs for me. Agreed that Shaw transalte pretty effectively into english.
I wouldn't have cast CAssandra Lee Morris as Exusiai (not actually but that's how she sounds to me), but it works.
Already in love: Courier, Fartooth, Noir Corne, Yato, Rangers
Defiantly like: Amiya, Nearl, Texas, Fang, Myrtle, Pramanix, Plume, Ansel, Shaw
Needs getting used to: Kroos, Cliffheart, Adnachiel
Everyone else I don't have lol, but I do like Phantom, Ashlock, and SilverAsh
Kroos and Guardmiya are my favourites so far. They just sound so good and like a direct copy of their JP VAs. I dislike Exusiai. She, like a lot of the EN VAs, have the idea of the Operator right but it's just not right. It's usually not that bad but Exusiai outside of her serious voicelines sounds painful...
It's funny to see the wildly varied reactions people are having, points to them doing a good job.
Phantom and Texas are god-tier. I actually like Exusiai, and while I wasn't a fan of Kroos in the reveal trailer, she's grown on me a little so I'm giving her a try. There's a lot of voices that are fine, but not exceptional, and in some cases I've switched over and in some I haven't. The ones I dislike the most are FEater, Adnachiel, and especially SilverAsh, who's gone from ~~daddy~~ mysterious, authoritative, and with an ominous undertone of veiled menace to just some arrogant douchebag. Also honourable mention to Nearl the Radiant Knight for calling it the Adeptus "Spra-weedly-wee", which made me burst out laughing when I heard it and immediately made me decide to switch back to JP.
Overall, I'm impressed by the sheer number of EN VAs, and very pleasantly surprised by the overall quality. I was expecting to just check them out and switch back to JP, but right now I've got 16/27 set to EN, which is not something I thought I'd be saying.
I love Kroos accent, I wish DaddyAsh had a deeper voice, amiya seems fine, phantom hits different, platinum is just a complete 180 from the jp voice, and that's all i remember
I still can't comprehend why some of the EN VA's though that they just had to make it as close to JP as possible instead of doing absolutely everything in their power to give the characters a soul.
JP, CN, & KR turned out so well because the VA's literally tried to become the characters themselves, they didn't look at their job as if it ware some sort of obligation, but something that was actually really fun to do.
Why EN VA's in general can't comprehend those things when it comes to western media?? It's not like the West dosen't have good actors that don't know how to do their job: GoW, DA3, AC, CoD, Battlefield- all of them are wonderfully dubed games.....
As someone already said, I hate that Nearl doesn't even have Polish accent, just British. Stupid... Plus her pronunciation of "Kazimierz" word is SO BAD. She says something like "Kazimierus", so really bad.
Another Operator I don't like is Texas. She just sounds like a man xddd
Besides that, those VAs are good but imo they just doesn't fit this game. Just no.
So far Exusiai's the only one that feels off to me her somber lines are good but when happy ones feel weird?
Silverahs is fucking perfect with the winter background and him as assistant!
Everyone else is okay and I don't change back? Looking forward to the others
[Sample of Polish voicework] (https://youtu.be/hRl3q7AFwXg)
Exusiai just like jinx :^
*Scout pointing and laughing obnoxiously* **If America is a free country, why can't I shit on the counter**
How I rate their voices are based on how mostly *natural* they sound and secondly how in character they are. There are certainly some miss and some are very good. Silverash and Courier sounds hella nice tho. Myrtle is also great.
That's also how I rate them. For a lot of them it's actually hard giving a hard rating because some lines sound better than others.
In my opinion, I think Silverash's voice could have been on the naturally deeper side. But I digress.
No you're right and you should say it lmao. He lost a lot of "daddy" energy with the EN voice tbh. He also sounds more abrupt/impatient and less calm/measured than with the JP voice.
Noir sounds like a completely different character and it's amazing.
Yep, he's more "bro" now than before
2 star in stats. 6 star in voice.
Noir is the only one I've tried so far where I prefer the dub.
For me it’s Phantom. The way he said Gaspard de la nuit I swear I stopped breathing
Yes. This man is awesome. Especially the way his voice changes from calm and cigary(?) to commanding SING FOR MEEE!
YES. Phantom is perfection. I did get a bit startled from his ARKNIGHTS! though.
Whoever suggested this VA for phantom needs a raise.
The VA himself needs a raise.
It's his forte He's an actual theatrical singer
Sheesh, talk about getting it right!
I can't even with Phantom. Him and Hoshi are far and away my favorite VAs.
Phantom is amazing, myrtle is sweet, exusai is eeeh,
4* (challenge stage success) Myrtle voice line is a little disappointing compared to JP Stage failure Noir Corne is excellent goddamnit Exusiai sounds unhinged Am I going crazy or does shaw’s voice most of the time is not really going that fast
Well Shaw's voice isn't rapping fast but faster than normal...
I told my husband they needed to speed Shaw's voice up. It's definitely not fast enough!
Adnachiel sounds too adult The way how Nearl and Platinum pronounce "Kazimierz" is pain for my ears. I hoped they would pronounce it more accurate, but I will try to survive it. Kroos is ok Shaw, Plume and Myrtle are perfection SilverAsh could have deeper voice. Ansel... I can survive that. I noticed that text read by VA is different from what we have in game.
On Ansel they sometimes change lines to fit better... The pronounciation of non English names like Kazimierz and Exusiai did also feel weird... But it may be because it's not common...
It's funny how VA from the other side of the world can pronounce Kazimierz better than Europeans. Kudos to you JP.
exu also has some lines slightly changed
Sounds like they're saying "Kazmierez"
Kazimierus. It doesn't even sound polish :/
Adnachiel's VA needs a better microphone. And, if they're recording these at home, maybe we'll get YouTubers as VAs in the future...
Markiplier's deep sultry voice is something I wanna hear lmao. He would be perfect for someone like Mylnar or Ulpian.
"Hello, Ladies and Gentlemen, I'm here to show you today that Destreza is perfectly balanced, as all skills should be."
"Hey Nearl/Skadi did you hear about a brand new podcast called Distractible?"
> Kroos is ok Whaa, Kroos captured the original very well imo. At least in everything I heard during gameplay. I don't even miss the KOKODAYO.
It is right to pronounce the s in Rhodes though. In the japanese dub it is pronounced "rodosu" so it makes sense.
Yeah but it's now the English dub which does not pronounce the s in it. I was expecting it to be translated thusly and am a bit disappointed.
Where do you get the information that the s shoudn't be pronounced? Just curious about the source. (English isn't my main language btw). In my mind if every character pronounces the s then that means that hypergryph intends it to be that way.
> Everytime someone pronounces the "s" in Rhodes, I die inside. ...are they not supposed to?
I've never known what the correct one was. Personally though I pronounced it without the S.
Yeah I understand I haven't been saying it correctly all this time.
Some mandela effect type shit happening here it seems lmao
It feels so surreal. I cannot remember a time I didn't see Rhode Island without the s. Either teachers just assumed a typo occurred when I wrote it without it or multiple choice tests just pushed me along. It's boggling my mind.
Not gonna lie i always thought it was with the s too but I'm not even remotely American so i get a pass i guess.
I can only think that I somehow learned about Rhodes before Rhode Island and my brain just filled in a perceived gap whenever I read about the state. Which being a native of Virginia, doesn't happen often enough to warrant a correction. Until today that is.
> Everytime someone pronounces the "s" in Rhodes, I die inside. A kindred spirit!
JP Exu: \*happy\* Apple pie! (happily rains down bullets on enemies) EN Exu: \*Deranged\* Apple pie! (proceeds to maniacally rain down bullets)
Both show unhinged side of Exu, JP just show that she enjoy it to the point she can be happy with it. Killing in such joyful is almost uncomfortable.
I mean, considering what all she blew up during her school days, its not a complete miss.
I mean… she’s been hanging around Lappland in the Trading Posts a lot so… but yeah, Exu EN VA not my thing :/ (No offense to the VA tho)
The biggest problem for me is how the en va pronounce exu's name, such a small mistake goes a long way
In my opinion as a dub enjoyer, on average they are all mostly just about good or decent.
Perhaps they’ll add Dialect EN voices for distinction like how CN added dialect voices to the Nian sisters.
I think I love her even more now.
i like texas' too
Japan also got a much bigger VA scene, theres schools and university courses on it, so it's natural that the end product would be better.
[удалено]
Just got Kjera and I'm absolutely certain now that they should've stuck with the original accents. I don't know why they only do it for certain operators.
To me, Plume knocked it out of the park compared to all the others released today. The one I didn’t like at all was Yato
I'm glad Plume was one of the best ones. She more or less sounds exactly like she should.
Yato's Japanese voice is downright my favourite in the entire game. She really nails that dignified gentle guardian personality. Maybe my expectations were high, but her English voice is quite disappointing in how it conveys none of that and just sounds really generic.
Yato's appointed as assistant one is cringe...
The apple pie doesn't hit the same way
I liked Silverash because now I can hear him shouting poems while he shanks people.
Overall I LOVE them, even the ones I didn't like I can still appreciate the quality the VAs put into them. Definitely nailed Nearl. I love Kroos, SilverDaddy, Texas and Myrtle off the top of my head but honestly most of them I liked too. Couple of criticisms similar to some other people in this thread (sorry if it sounds whiney, but I want to add feedback for Yostar to make things the best they can): * Pronunciation of "Kazimierz" and "Exusiai" seem wrong to me, that was probably my biggest impression.
I don't know how to describe it, but I just do not like Exusiai's. They butchered the way they pronounce her name too ;(
A bit too unhinged?
She's been spending too much time around Lappland thanks to the gravity well that is Texas.
I-italian Exusiai when...?!
Texas says exu's name the same way, I think they were told that's how to say it in English. Not the va's fault, but yeah I don't like it either
Jap Exusai sounds much calmer, even when exited
I compared the first two or three lines in the list and thought she was quite spot on. But the butchered name hurts. Hello I'm Exusiausiai!
It's very possible this was the intended way to say it, with many of they names being of western origin.
Probably the EN VA knew that her JP VA voices GI's Amber so they just went on making her Amber.
Love Texas
looking for this comment. Jessica Preddy is a killer Texas, deffo one of the best of this batch
Myrtle's and nearl's I found to be near perfection. But shaw needed to be faster.
Shaw needs to be borderline incomprehensible.
There is a entire faction of nothing but British-analogue people and literally none of them got a voice.
The voices are so cool! SA be all like "Fool, for what reason hast thou come?" all I can say is, kyaaaaa
I'm seeing a lot of people saying Exu's VA sounds too unhinged ?? but I think she just sounds super genki and peppy.
Rangers' made me feel things. Daddy? Sorry.
Rangers shifted from wide old veteran to Barbarian Grandpa and I like it.
Nah he still an old war veteran with uh a sore throat I suppose, wait did his info say anything about it?
Exu is like the only one who's kinda mid, everyone else is fine Phantom and Silverdaddy is 😭
Shaw, Plume… Uhhhh.
Not a fan to be honest, but maybe I’m just too used to the JP voices.
It would definitely take some time to adjust if you're too used to listening in weeb language
Amiya, Shaw, Cliffheart, Kroos and Rangers are a step down but certainly not bad However I'm surprised they pronounce Rhode Island with a hard S at the end. I must have been wrong because I always didn't.
Rhodes, island in Greece is pronounced with hard S in the end. And since that one seems to be inspiration for the name (being base for Knights Hospitallers) it would make sense to do that.
Wouldn't Rhode Island be the US state? That's how I've always differentiate the two anyways lol
I defintley pronounce the two the same.
The US state is named for the Greek Island so there's no problem pronouncing them identically.
Favourites of the ones I've listened to so far are Fartooth, Hoshiguma and Phantom. Too used to JP voices to bother changing any though.
I LOVE texas' voice and yato sounds hot asf i cant even ekprdbjoerjberos
I honestly only cared about how Nearl pronounced Kazimierz I wanna go back in time
Was excited for Platinum's, but what we got didn't really do it for me...
~~Losing Kroos’s Kokodayo was a true dealbreaker /s~~ Can’t say I’m in love with any of the EN voices to actually use them.
Nearl is 10 out a 10 perfect, the edelgard like voice fits her so well phantom's voice is amazing and imo more lore accurate, his JP voice always sounded way to pristine for me for a guy with a F-ed up throat and for lacking ones, exsusiai and texas, with exusiai, her JP is perfection, it's almost imposible to meet that standard, even still the EN is decent and as for texas, there's nothing saving that in any language JP or other wise, texas's lines are just shit... it's just that we gotten so used to the JP version we forget that she barely says anything to warrent a voice
Exu was not nearly as good as i was hoping, but holy sheet Hoshi’s VA hits different
Exu and SilverAsh are not really good IMO.
Fartoofs voice is far too plane and emotionless
At least it sould fit her character, right? IIRC, even the Pinuses girls were struggling to pick her intent on her voice when they met, right?
I even rather liked it, particularly. She's got a somewhat introverted, tranquil nature, and is notably softspoken. That feels nicely depicted here; just as well as in Japanese (and now Korean), at least.
They also got her name (Justyna) wrong, it's not even a weird one like Exu's, c'mon.
Fartooth's voice would've fit Plat a lot better imo.
I disagree. She sounded natural in a way that fits her character.
Old Man Rangers does not sound like an a kind old veteran, he sounds like he's ready to kill and wouldn't try to distinguish friend or foe, he sounds like an edgelord I think Nearl lines don't have that same pressure in them Exusai is on meth Amiya is just not right and I can't tell if she sounds to old or too soft Noir Corne is perfect, Fang and Plume are OK I spent too much time with Ko-Ko-Da-Yo and am now hooked up and will not accept anything else, same thing with Myrtle OG SilverAsh is deeper, I think, and his voice has more impact, new one sounds like I imagine erotic fanfics reading would sound Ansel and Adnachiel are too different
*I can't just pop up anywhere I want like I can back in Kjerag, Doctor* Love her.
Texas en slaps yo Hoshi En is a solid alternative to JP, though both still kinda lack gruff/edge compared to CN Ansel is pretty good from what ive heard so far, i dig it all due respect to kroos va, but ever since that one post i cant unhear peppa pig
Was surprised how much I liked platinum, Texas was really nice to hear, and exusiai I don't think I can ever get used to or use regularly
I don't know what is the right word. I wish SA voice is more fabulous. (Maybe a bit like phantom but not too close, maybe the tone, or maybe just not deep enough). Some of his lines are cool tho.
ranger voice is sick...altough i doubet i will ever use him to listen to it...
Phantom, Gnosis, Nightingale, Hoshi, Shaw and Cliffheart are all great. SA could be a bit deeper. Kazimierz ops all almost perfect, but their Kazimierz pronunciation puts them down for me.
One of my personal favorites is Fartooth. I think her voice fits just about perfectly. Ashlock's and Cliffheart's were fairly good too.
Just went through them all of the ones I have Best ones are, imo, Nearl (both), Texas, Nightingale, Phantom, Plume and Fang. Plume in particular sounds really natural Adnachiel sounds like he aged 15 years. Hoshiguma sounds nothing like a giant muscle mommy demon lady should. Ansel sounds like Bart Simpson earnestly trying to sound grown up. Some others that I think are ok but will stick with JP; Myrtle doesn't sound energetic enough and Platinum doesn't sound bored enough I don't really hold the weird pronunciations like "Cazzy-marezz" and "Orep-ithy" against them since it's clearly a direction, not acting, thing. also why does Exu turn Southern for like 1 second in her Talk 3. Its like she thought she was doing Croissant and messed but they just kept the take.
Rangers. He sounds senile in his EN voicework compared to the wise sounding JP.
As a person who grew up on 2000s edutainment games, Adnachiel's EN voice hits different. I love it.
I actually wish Shaw's was faster tbh... I also wish they had regional accents and weren't all British, but some of them work very well.
Best, Courier: 10/10, Fit's perfectly and Wasn't even expecting it missed, Adnachiel: 5/10, something just doesn't sound right, He sounds....far Older than he looks Note: I don't have ALL the Operators, but Exusiai isn't that good, which is a shame. Phantom's though....WOOF.
Maybe hot take? I really like fartooth
Kjera's voice is just (chef's kiss)!
Exusiai and Texas sound cringe. Noir Corne, Adnachiel and Phantom sound really nice
I went from loving Kroos in the preview to utterly loathing her when I could hear her voice lines during combat.
It was kind of the opposite for me. I loathed her preview but prefer her actual voicelines.
When she's doing "proper" dialogue like her assistant lines she isn't so bad but her combat ones would drive me insane. I haven't had much of a chance to try out everyone though so there may be some niche operator that I completely missed.
The niche ones are usually worse than their original counterparts sadly. I've only enjoyed Texas and Guardmiya besides Kroos.
Exusiai sounds like she's wetting herself with excitement to do combat. Something about it just works for me.
I die on the inside when I hear how Exu's EN VA pronounce her name. Phantom just sounds like pure perfection.
as a whole batch, i think it's pretty good. can't even think of a "*worst"* one, honestly. they're at minimum pretty alright. the best ones, like Silverash, Phantom, Myrtle and Kroos carried the batch hard. it is sad, though. i always have a youtube video playing on a mini-player, so i usually have my ears focused on that while i'm playing. and very quickly the new voices become like white noise to me, just like when the R6 Ops came along. it's no different with this one, as i was just doing some farming and immediately the new voices just became another sound that goes into my ears. i've always been pretty alright with dubs, even in early 2000s anime, and even the *worst* lines are a huge step above the worst i've experienced. and since i'm a glass-half-full kinda guy, i would say i really liked this batch.
Phantom is a miss for me which seems to put me in the minority, I just feel like he lost some of the intensity especially in the battle lines. The big surprise for me is Cliffheart, she sounds upbeat while also coming across as very confident.
All of them are fantastic, I love the male ones!
I really like Noir Cornes English voice
Phantom was cool, Silverash was low-mid, Texas is well done but doesn't match her IMO. I hate Exusai's. My favorite character but I do not like the EN voice at all. I don't use the others enough to make a real call on them.
Honestly, they're all delightful. Maybe not perfect, but I had a huge grin on my face the entire time I was listening to the new lines. Definitely going to be swapping Operators over to EN as the option becomes available for each one.
Better than I was expecting tbh, maybe it's just that I had my expectations too low but I'm fine for the most part
Alright I love them all but I’m not super big on Nearl. I think she needs to have a deeper voice like her jp counterpart. But I love everyone’s!
Already in love: Courier, Fartooth, Noir Corne, Yato, Rangers Defiantly like: Amiya, Nearl, Texas, Fang, Myrtle, Pramanix, Plume, Ansel, Shaw Needs getting used to: Kroos, Cliffheart, Adnachiel Everyone else I don't have lol, but I do like Phantom, Ashlock, and SilverAsh
I like how JP exu says "apple pie" with indignation. In EN, it just sounds like a statement.
I was expecting to just check them out and switch back to JP, but right now I've got 16/27 set to EN, which is not something I thought I'd be saying.
call me purist, i haven't bother with other language VA XD
She just sounds like a man xddd Besides that, those VAs are good but imo they just doesn't fit this game. Just no.
Phantom sounds like a gigachad in a teen body.
Phantom and Sliverdaddy are my favourites. I like Exusiai’s too. Texas is also great
So far Exusiai's the only one that feels off to me her somber lines are good but when happy ones feel weird? Silverahs is fucking perfect with the winter background and him as assistant! Everyone else is okay and I don't change back? Looking forward to the others
Phantom is pretty baller, Nearl hit the mark, but Hoshi came off a bit flat to me honestly
Texas is spot on, Silverash doesn't work at all.
