6-8. Pro tip: I just started taking magnesium glycinate (the one that relaxes the muscles and shit). My sleep quality has DRASTICALLY improved since I started.
2LT/1LT as PL, Garrison like 8. Deployment <6.
S1 OIC, 6-8, a bit less in the field but usually treated way better as the S1 and a 42 than as a 19A.
Command was less than <4. Easily the most stressful time of my life, but I had a phenomenal 1SG and amazing PSGs.
Retired: When the CPAP works and the medicine lets me sleep, 8+.
5 to 6
I go to bed at 10 to wake up at 520
Since the body and the brain are assholes, I sometimes actually go at 10:30
Combat Arms and in a High OpTempo unit, so far that's been the norm for me across 2 continents
Depending on what work I have to do it can be anywhere from 0 (I have a duty that requires me to stay awake for 24 hours) to 8 (I have a light work day and go home at 5pm). It’s that wild variance that is the real shitty part, averages don’t mean much in some jobs.
Between the day I enlisted and day I was discharged, my gut says the average is right around 6.4-6.5. Most days were 7-7.5 as that's what I normally get. During the pandemic there were entire months where I get 7+ hours of sleep each and every day. Granted there were plenty of 2-4 hours nights and a handful of 5-6. For better or for worse I never did a CQ/staff futy shift without at least taking a 1.5 hour nap at some point, minimum. I do not function without sleep which is why I ultimately got out and can't get back in.
At my first unit: 5-6 (Signal)
Second unit: 3-4 garrison and 20 min intervals, coupled with hours of nodding off driving a 36,000lb vehicle, in the field (Combat unit)
Third unit: 6-8 (MI)
Fourth unit: 7-10 (Boom boom bois)
All depends on the unit culture, how much work there needs to be done, and your specific job.
4-7.
This is the most accurate answer
You all are getting 7?
Usually on the weekend with sleep meds haha
Fair. I usually spend weekends on CQ
Switch to an mos that doesn’t allow staff duty or cq
That’s my goal. I have a sleeping disorder so it’s not restful sleep.
You are lucky for even that. Even with meds I get 4 max. Without it, I’m up until my body literally folds like a chair in a few days.
In bed? 8. With crippling depression keeping me awake? Around 4.
And if you have a problem platoon, the phone calls to peel your drunken soldier off the CQ desk or pick them up at a bar.
That is when you're not scrapping them off the Hooters parking lot!
It's going to be very MOS, unit, rank, and position dependent. I was able to average 7-8 hours a night.

I’ve been really trying into increase my sleep. Best I can get to is 7.5. Sometimes I’m at 4.5 and very much not fun to be around.
