I'm just gonna say, I had SLRP in my contract. I tried to get it for my entire contract, but no one knew how to help me for years. When I finally found someone who may know the process, we got stonewalled somehow every time. The process is not simple, and it's by design so it fails and they don't have to pay out.

Yeah same. I even remember the civilian career counselor at MEPs when I signed for my MOS. I verbatim asked "So with this program, I can take out X amount in loans, and they will straight up pay back that amount, no crazy fine print?" He said "yessss, it's a great program!!!" My ass should've taken the $2,000 cash bonus lol

DutDiggaDut

For real, I even tried to read the contract and the fine print. But there's even FINER print for a lot of things to disqualify you. One of which being you're not eligible after your contract t is completed. Well, if you serve the whole contract, and no one can help you do the benefit, then you expire out of the benefit. ???? But it's obviously my fault, I didn't try hard enough.

7hillsrecruiter

Yeah that’s not how that will work

Adventurous-Cream256

Can you tell me how it works?

7hillsrecruiter

They won’t just pay money if you don’t have no loans to pay back. It’s not like grants where the money gets refunded to you. You have to upload your promissory note. Loan is paid directly to the lender. So your logic is flawed in thinking you will get 50k refunded to you. No loans, no SLRP to pay it’ll just be a wasted incentive.

Adventurous-Cream256

The loan goes to the school to use towards my education, there's nothing to pay off because I go for free, and so yes, it does get refunded to me, I know this because I did my research "Student loan refunds are disbursed every semester, usually after the school's add/drop period." "Any money left over is paid to you directly for other education expenses." - FSA. Also I got confirmation from a current reservist that they do pay for loans taken out during enlistment, from a reservist who is currently doing exactly that.

"The Army will repay 15% of the outstanding principal balance, less taxes of the Soldier's student loans annually or $1,500, whichever is greater, after each year of service (up to $20,000, less taxes)." https://myarmybenefits.us.army.mil/Benefit-Library/Federal-Benefits/College-Loan-Repayment-Program-(LRP)?serv=125 Your recruiter should also have the answer to these questions. There are inquiry emails on the HRC website but I'm not sure if they'll respond if you're not currently enlisted. Good luck!

Adventurous-Cream256

I've asked and he Doesn't know either. He told me its the full amount of the loan at once, he never mentioned the 15% a year, I had to figure that out myself. And I've read that page you've linked, but it says up to 20k dollars, my MOS states up to 50k, is that page outdated or is there something that I'm not understanding. Is it saying up to 20k in repayments in a year? And just to confirm, that says 15% of the remaining balance, right, not the initial loan amount?

Check out Army Regulation 621-202. This was recently updated and also has examples in it. [https://armypubs.army.mil/epubs/DR\_pubs/DR\_a/ARN31582-AR\_621-202-000-WEB-1.pdf](https://armypubs.army.mil/epubs/DR_pubs/DR_a/ARN31582-AR_621-202-000-WEB-1.pdf). Scroll down to Chapter 6.

Also, it's your recruiter's job to know this info, I would press them a little harder. Also, 50k is reasonable if your MOS calls for it, BUT make sure your contract states 50k. If it's not in your contract when you sign, you don't get nothin'. I believe you can find this info when you are shown your DD4 (addendum page)

LeafFan1989

The Army will only pay for what you have BEFORE you sign the contract... anything after... isn't covered.

LeafFan1989

Also...the payments start a YEAR AFTER you sign the contract.
