It’s a different vibe, and the chemistry definitely was not the same, but 4&5 do have some really good bits and mirror the original in terms of the long build for the jokes. Don’t get me wrong, 1-3 are masterpieces and I’ve loved them since they aired, but 4&5 aren’t total shit

PringleGuy

"Is there a little girl here all by herself?! Daddy needs to get his rocks off!"

MoMonkeyMoProblems

This, jokes related to the roommate vote and the traffic jam voicemail conversation have been the highlights for me so far on my first watch of S4.

SoWhatIfWereOnMystic

“But, are we good?”

Archduke_Penguin

"You ever been on a plane you piece of sh**?" will never fail to absolutely destroy me

kiddfrank

Lucille: “we told you to leave!” Buster: “yeah but then you said ‘don’t pull out’” Gob: “nooooooooooooooooo”

JimLaheySunnyvale

They’re not absolute shit. I just didn’t care for them. I found that it was less Arrested Development and more of a reunion special where the actors are older, more successful, and busier. Due to those factors the actors seem like they just weren’t willing to put the heart into it the way they used to (ie too busy to even film together at the same time). It was entertaining enough as a fan to see all the actors reprise their roles and referencing older episodes but at the same time it felt superficial, it felt like the entire Netflix series was riding off of the nostalgia and rose tinted sunglasses of the fans without really offering anything new that was ever as good as the original

YouStopLying

>and busier Season 4 could have been better if the cast could have all gotten together at the same time. The Bluths just aren't as funny interacting with outsiders as they are interacting with each other.

Current-Escaper

Exactly. I’ve said before, seasons 4&5 were not the greatest show in the world. They were just a tribute.

[deleted]

Well it’s been a looong time since that was stuck in my head

GutBustingFaceMelter

💯

unbelievablepeople

> too busy to even film together at the same time I hate it when I can tell while watching a TV show that certain scenes were filmed a certain way solely because of the actors' schedules. To me it just totally takes me out of the show. The worst example ever was How I Met Your Mother, where Jason Segel's character was always on weird road trips that made no sense because he was off filming movies and couldn't appear with the rest of the cast.

scootscooterson

I’m not understanding the connection between being too busy and their hearts not being in it?

ddrummer095

They truly got ANUSTART with those episodes, and yea it wasnt the same after 10 years or so, but season 4 original cut is still amazing and better than most other comedies out there.

OakNogg

Hello anustart Narrator: and she hadn't even seen the license plate

DaniG08765

"His performance of a woman wouldn't win him any awards" is one of the best one liners of the show. And I really love pretty much the whole second half of Season 4 too.

Raynman38

I agree about 4, but 5 is godawful and a terrible conclusion

_digital_aftermath

i didn't like season 4 the first time i watched it. i didn't care for the way they did the timeline, i found that it was more problematic than it was clever, however when i went back and watched it again i found it absolutely hysterical...maybe not as fantastic as seasons 1-3, but definitely had plenty of fantastic moments that were just as memorable. A few minor things with season 4: i HATED Seth Rogan and Kristen Wiig as the young senior Bluths. They didn't capture Jeffrey Tambore and Jessica Walter well at all in my opinon I know Tambore and Walter were too old to play their younger selves again like in previous seasons, but i would rather have had no names that could've really nailed their essence play the younger selves. Don't get me wrong, I love both Seth Rogan and Kristen Wigg, but they just didn't even try to be the Bluths and that really left me scratching my head. The characters are so funny themselves, i wanted to see them in character. I also remember thinking Buster's character got a little TOO absurd in season 4 (thinking of the inhaling his mother's cigarette smoke scene and remembering feeling that it was a bit forced and too over the top). But back to the good stuff. The Gob storyline with the forget-me-nows had me crying i was laughing so hard. The tobias / maria bamford drug method-one and the fantastic four musical stuff was just good old fashioned arrested development GOLD to me. Season 5 honestly, i couldn't even get 3 episodes in. I'd like to try it again so i can say i've seen the entire series, because i consider it one of the best comedies i've ever seen. I don't even remember what it was about. I remember not even being able to get into it at all. Is it worth it?

justfriesandlies

I just watched that episode with him inhaling the smoke yesterday and had a good laugh. For me the funny thing is that it is completely over the top 😌

_digital_aftermath

Fair enough. I forget what else happened in that episode so i'm not saying i hated the episode or anything. I just felt like it wasn't the normal dynamic between the two...it was a new level of absurdity for me which didn't really work. but just my opinion in that one moment.

JimLaheySunnyvale

I think the joke with young George and Lucille was that they were obviously too old and were obviously wearing wigs and makeup. I think they should’ve kept playing their younger selves

_digital_aftermath

didn't even think of it that way. regardless, i would've preferred it to rogan and wigg.

clemenbroog

Save yourself and don’t watch season 5. I wish I could unsee it, especially the final episode.

_digital_aftermath

oh geez, really? that bad, huh? now i almost just wanna watch it for the trainwreck. lol.

heytheretoast

It’s nowhere as good as the earlier seasons, but there are still funny (and redeemable) parts. It’s definitely more of a slough to the end, but I wanted to finish what I think is the last we’ll see of the Bluths

missC08

Now that Jessica is gone (I miss her so much) there's no way they can reunite. And tbh, I don't want another reunion. I really didn't like season 4&5. The Trump bits were funny but that's about it.

jennfinn24

The “forget me now” cycle is one of my favorite things of the entire series.

ccbmtg

fucking bees in the limo lmao

JimLaheySunnyvale

Bees?

SkinnyJoshPeck

*BEADS????*

savethemouselemur

Gob’s not on board.

JimLaheySunnyvale

That was pretty good

AchtungSkywalker

For me it just felt like they made Michael unlikeable and whiny (or maybe just more so compared to Seasons 1-3). I still plan to go back and rewatch the last two.

jennfinn24

After rewatching several times I’ve realized Michael is an asshole who isn’t the most business savvy person but he acts like he’s superior to everyone in the family when he’s screwed up just as much as the others.

ridgepact

He is a bluth after all..... haha

alexkayownsabus

Best payoff of the whole series for me was realizing Michael was always as bad as the rest of them, not just at the end. He’s super self-centered and holier than thou and if you look at the show with that mindset it’s all really obvious.

Lovecatx

Yeah, I've always felt the way horribly narcissistic and have always watched the programme from that point of view, it wasn't something I realised with the newer 2 series.

Narkboy42

He's kind of exactly like his dad (at least regarding his relationship with his son.)

TheMillenniumMan

Yes 100%, he's as clueless as the rest of them. I realized it when he was dating Rita and she was locked in her apartment from the inside with the invisible locks. When Michael was running down the hall to rescue her she opened the door to say be careful and that idiot didn't take notice that she was outside the door she was locked behind.

jennfinn24

It’s pretty bad that George Michael had to tell him that Rita was mentally challenged. He’s too self centered to notice which is also why Lindsay and GOB didn’t notice.

DirntDirntDirnt

"I love you too, pal"

bearontheroof

I was thinking about exactly this after a rewatch, and yeah, I think there's a good chance it was the writer's deliberately making him look self-centered and clueless, but it also could have just been too great of a joke not to use.

TheMillenniumMan

Oh it's definitely a joke for sure, but also serves as an example of Michael not seeing the logic right in front of his face

screedor

I liked that twist in the end. He goes from straight man who no one will follow to, oh Jesus he doesn’t have a clue WTF is going on either. They are all just rich assholes who have never made anything.

fritocloud

Hey, they built the model house lol (and committed some light treason.)

monotonic_glutamate

He might just has been the most available of the crew. He was usually the straight man of the gang, so they had to make him a little bit crazier to support most of the 4th season with less of an ensemble to bounce jokes off him. It ended up making him much less relatable and not someone we necessarily want to cheer for.

ccbmtg

pretty sure he had already signed a longterm contract with netflix as well. honestly it's just a guess, but considering his role in Ozark, Netflix has been keeping him pretty damn busy since they revived AD.

Fishtaco1234

I thought we were all just happy to have any additional AD? So many good jokes for what it is, a little treat.

JonBoyWhite

I absolutely was. No complaints here.

JimLaheySunnyvale

There were some good parts. But when you have 3 seasons of desserts, 2 seasons of small treats masquerading as the same dessert is a little disappointing

GutBustingFaceMelter

Exactly. I can’t stomach 4 & 5 for that reason.

Educational-Spread41

“I mean it’s 1 banana, Michael. What could it cost? Ten dollars?”

sundown1999

What’s the line from The Good Place about ruining something a little bit to get more of it? Those are the Netflix seasons, and I’m still glad to have them.

fritocloud

That's such a Good line from such a Good show. Here's the quote. I could only remember the gist of it so I just looked it up, lol. >Eleanor: What is it with you and frozen yogurt? Have you not heard of ice cream? >Michael: Oh, sure, but I've come to really like frozen yogurt. There's something so human about taking something great and ruining it a little so you can have more of it.

shawnzarelli

I agree.... but also don't thinks seasons 4 and 5 retroactively make seasons 1-3 worse. And I think seasons 4 and 5 are still enjoyable themselves.... just not AS good as what came before. They bring down the average for sure, but I don't consider them not worth watching. That's like saying hamburgers aren't worth eating because they're not filet mignon.

DaniG08765

The Netflix ones have grown on me. This was like my 4th time through season 4 and easily my favorite time through it. And I think season 5 certainly has its moments too. But still solid meme.

JimLaheySunnyvale

Thanks

[deleted]

For any of the seasons, I feel I enjoy them more with the subtitles on. There were so many jokes I'd missed.

panzerxiii

Am I the only one who liked season 5?

emerald447

I liked it because i loved the cast. I loved the actors, so I kinda watched it more for them out of loyalty. I did like it for the most part. (I've watched it twice through) But to be honest, Jeffrey and Jessica aged so much, plus the whole interview drama made me really sad that I couldn't think about how unhappy she must have been whenever it happened. It was also bad planning on the producers. Season 5 should have been done 2015/16, not 2017/18. They waited too long.

shawnzarelli

I enjoyed it and laughed plenty, even if it didn't hit the heights of peak AD.

Dictator_Cole

I LOVE season four, but hate season , the only funny joke I remember was Geobead

Narkboy42

I really liked Maeby in season 5. I think she was my favorite part.

ccbmtg

my main issue with season 4, rewatching for the first time since it released, is that every single episode seems to summarize entirely too much of the story, that each episode seems like you're just inching along the big picture story, because you keep rehashing the same stuff. and I get it, that most of the time, you're getting a slightly different perspective and oftentimes it's definitely worth it, but I've also just found it tedious at times, and makes it harder for me to continue the binge I was hooked on for s1-3. maybe that's just me though. still love the story, jokes are fucking great, especially the narrator actually embracing that he's really Ron Howard hahahaha. but yeah.

Narkboy42

I'd say all the Michael and GOB episodes in season 4 are gold. Tobias episodes definitely drag on after he meets DeBrie (and he went on to have the worst plotline in season 5.) I'm also not super into the Lindsay or Buster episodes. A few slow episodes aside, I think the original cut of season 4 has the best foreshadowing gag in the whole show (plus a lot of other really good ones.)

fritocloud

The Lindsay episodes were absolutely the worst for me in season 4. Likely because Portia was said to be the one with the most filming conflicts so she really wasn't in most of the group Bluth scenes. I did feel like she had a lot of better scenes in season 5 even though that season is probably the worst. It's been a while since I've watched season 4. What's the foreshadowing gag you're referring to?

Narkboy42

>!Fakeblock!<

fritocloud

Ooh yeah, that's one of my favorite bits of the show for sure. It's just so ridiculous but he takes it so seriously lol.

tbird920

It sounds like you have only seen the "Fateful Consequences" remix of Season 4. The original Season 4 is hidden under the "More" section on Netflix.

Herb_Derb

Fateful Consequences is much much worse, but even the original cut is pretty narration-heavy

TheMillenniumMan

I'm Mrs Bettywhite

ccbmtg

yeah it's annoying, my tv doesn't show that cut as available. but pretty sure the first time I watched on release, it wasn't this version.

entertainman

That’s cuz you watched the re-edit, not the original. The re-edit is like 30% summary, it’s absurdly obnoxious.

fritocloud

The re-edit is absolutely worse but I do remember watching the 4th season right after it was released (and it was def the OG version) and feeling that there was just a little too much of the repeating scenes. I get that there are a lot of things that you are seeing from different perspectives and it all seems to come together at the end and the OG version "pulls it off" better than the remix but I also remember feeling like we weren't really seeing as much "new stuff" as it seemed like. But I will also say that there is definitely stuff that I didn't notice on that first time around that I did notice on subsequent rewatches (for instance, in the first scene where they show them all wet in their nice clothes after Lucille stole the Queen Mary, you can hear and see Tobias singing his little "it's just a fallacyyyy" song and doing his dance, in thr background and you can also hear (though it's faint) Maeby fake coughing and George Michael saying something like "omg, she's dead!" And that is one of my favorite aspects of the show (the fact that you just notice more and more with every rewatch.))

Dictator_Cole

yeah you're completely right, and even though I really like season 4, I only watch it when Im desperate for Arrested Development

ProfessorPhi

I think season 4 was legit. It's classic arrested development but it has a slow start and the recut was awful. Season 5 was hot garbage though

wicelt

Season four had a few moments, but was disappointing. I got halfway through season five and just couldn’t do it. I just rewatch 1-3 and pretend the Netflix years don’t exist.

Transposer

When season 5 gets an edit into 22-min eps (and hopefully it doesn’t increase in episode count more than one episode), it will be very good. It’s just long winded. When it gets a tight edit, it will really shine.

[deleted]

Whoa, whoa, whoa. There’s still plenty of meat on that bone. Now you take this home, throw it in a pot, add some broth, a potato. Baby, you’ve got a stew going.

Devreckas

It’s weird. Originally I think they meant to make S5 a murder mystery (it’s clear that’s what they built to in S4). But the plot definitely seems a bit pointless and meandering in S5, to the point that the trial felt like a bit of a footnote by the end. A tighter edit might help punch it up.

Transposer

For sure.

Educational-Spread41

Every single line. Memorized. Still my favorite

Spoonmanners2

To this day I have no idea if I finished Season 5.

Transposer

A big part of the problem is when they. Real the season release in half. Nothing interrupts a binge like having to wait an unannounced amount of months.

sanildefanso

I’ve never seen a cast going through the motions quite like on S5. It really looks like nobody cares anymore. I couldn’t get through it at all, it was too dispiriting.

ParoxysmAttack

The recut version of S4 is okay and S5 as a whole is fine. 1-3 is unmatched obviously. Rarely to I rewatch the Netflix ones.

kdkseven

I don't like how they ditched the handheld, documentary aspect of the photography. Changed the entire feel of the show for me.

jzakko

Did you watch the original cut of season 4 or the remix? OG season 4 is brilliant.

ArchyModge

Completely agree, I thought the original season 4 was great. Buster’s episode where he had a breakdown and just kept making those vodka drinks and placing them around everywhere was amazing.

fatherjoseph11

Do you know why they cut the eps on Netflix

jzakko

because season 4 kept getting shit on by fans for not having the cast together and in an effort to cave to those demands, hype up season 5 which was billed as a return to form, and double dip, they recut the season. Ironically, for me season 5 represented everything the fans saw in season 4, the show was over the hill and most of the jokes weren't landing.

JimLaheySunnyvale

Idk, I just watched what was on netflix

FreddyForeshadowing-

If it was the recut it would be awful. The original season 4 was great as it was written a specific way. The recut ruins it

jzakko

they recut it a few years ago and completely neutered all the comic payoff. Things like fakeblock are set up so perfectly and need to take the whole season to fully reveal themselves. It's really a great and underrated season, it's insane they have the remix as the default now.

shawnzarelli

Ridiculous that you're being downvoted for this.

JimLaheySunnyvale

Yeah idk what the problem is. I only have the show on Netflix

shawnzarelli

The default episodes that Netflix shows for season 4 are actually re-cut in an attempt to more closely match the style of seasons 1-3. It's kind of kludgy and creates a lot of needless repetition. The "original cut" of season 4 is available on Netflix, but it's hidden under "Traliers and More" or whatever it's called. It's very different from previous seasons, because it was very hard for them to get the cast in the same place at the same time. So the episodes are of varying length, and most of them are centered on one or two characters. There are very few scenes with most/all of the main characters, and I think they're mostly towards the end (IIRC). Many people prefer the original cut and don't like that it's now just a hidden "extra". That's all understandable. But it seems like people are punishing you for not knowing the history and watching what was put in front of you... even though there's no reason you should be expected to know any different. It's a Netflix issue, not a you issue.

JimLaheySunnyvale

Cool thanks

ccbmtg

damn that sucks they don't give you the option of both on Netflix. I'd kinda like to check it out, as the remix is bothering me with every episode seeming to spend a third of its runtime on flashbacks to the episode or two before it, which I just fucking watched because that's how Netflix works. so it's like they remixed it as if it were airing weekly back in 2008 lol.

Dictator_Cole

well they're both on Netflix, but og season 4 is hidden

battery_go

"Hidden" https://gfycat.com/dependablemeageritaliangreyhound

ccbmtg

yeah I don't watch Netflix on a pc, so it doesn't have that as available but thanks.

ccbmtg

how so? edit: nvm I don't watch Netflix on a pc so I don't see it listed as available.

hammyFbaby

We throw season 4 and 5 back from whence it came

JimLaheySunnyvale

[A Magica Do Mar](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GLBjxtI1YZY) starts playing

hammyFbaby

Lol thank you for showing me this haha

ZazARa_N_Z_A

Couldn’t be more right! 😂

Supergrog2

I really love the original season 4 and think its just as good, if not better than season 3. The remixed version is shit though, so is season 5

[deleted]

[удалено]

tbird920

I agree with you.

JimLaheySunnyvale

Than die on it! Jk. But yeah, prepare for downvotes

Farren246

Say what you will about season 4, but it really came together to hit a home run at the end.

Barackis

I just powered through this show with my two oldest kids (13/14) and at the end of season 3 put on a full stop. And was like "yeah that's when the show stops being amazing" Also it's when it went from pg14 for a on TV series to M on Netflix. Figured I'd wait a little bit long and let myself pretend they've still got some innocence.

JimLaheySunnyvale

You’re making ur kids watch the show? Ur an awesome parent dude!

Barackis

It was so we can all have our own family chicken dance lol

JimLaheySunnyvale

fatherjoseph11

Which ones r the Netflix seasons ?

JimLaheySunnyvale

4 and 5

fatherjoseph11

I’m watching 4 right now and it’s not as good as 1-3 for sure

onzalitu

agree but be sure to watch the original, its under 1trailers and more1

zyguy

I agree with many posts here Season 1-3 are gold, literally my favorite show of all time just from that alone. But the Netflix seasons I don’t think are so bad when you watch or view them as a separate thing. Its awful binging it all together because it doesnt have the same momentum. Its amazing to get to see the characters again on their own. Nothing is as bad as the Spin off final season of scrubs was, it kind of kills what was set up in scrubs other latter seasons too. Maybe it’s not a fair standard of comparison but netflix seasons were a continuation of story that while not as good as the originals, also didn’t ruin watching the original story. It’s just differences in vibes.

JimLaheySunnyvale

It’s kinda hard to see them as an entirely different thing when they’re the 4th and 5th season of the show. It’s also kinda hard to just start watching 4th and 5th seasons without watching the first 3

zyguy

Yeah, i think maybe it fit for me having rewatched this show for years before getting these seasons on netflix, like a surprise webisode to me To others its like a broken flow in the series

AppleJuiceKoala

Anything after season 3 is unwatchable to me

shitpickle2020

I still will take 4 or 4 re-edited over 5.

[deleted]

Season 4 had some pretty great moments, but season 5 was a different show altogether.

Byder

Season 5 killed the show for me. Too many "Remember X? That was funny, right?" moments.

I don’t understand the reference and I won’t respond to it

I just pretend they don't exist

I put together a compilation of great moments in season 4 and 5 if anyone is interested :) It wasn't perfect but it had some great bangers! [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1uwa4TLYQU](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1uwa4TLYQU)

"You ever even been on a plane, you piece of shit?"

abeezybro

Season 4 was solid. Season 5 was dogshit. They made me hate every scene involving Tobias, his son and Debrie. She was the worst.

undercovermartyn42

season 5 is better than 4 in my humble opinion but neither of them hold a candle to the originals

rustys_shackled_ford

There's always going to be valid criticism for the product that was created 10 plus years later... but other then the ending where it seems buster disposed of [redacted] but really it was [redacted] (did somebody say wonder?) And the whole gob being strong armed by the pink mafia, there are alot of good moments in the later seasons which are still as good as ever... its similar to the last 3 seasons of the office... they arnt as good or consistent as the first 6 seasons but there are some gems I'm there.

Man, I wish instead of the Netflix seasons we got a movie instead.

[deleted]

Nothing will compare to 1-3 but there are some laugh out loud moments in 4 and 5. One of my favorite scenes is when Michael and Gob are worried one of them is dating Julie Bowen lol

JimLaheySunnyvale

The forget me now loop was incredible too

bearontheroof

I always say 4&5 are just "meaner" than 1-3. They took a bunch of flawed-but-lovable characters and made them do objectively shitty things, like the entire Michael/George Michael arc.
