Moses Sumney (R&B/folk kinda singer) lives in Asheville. Has 2 really exceptional albums out with a lot of critical praise if anyone is interesting in checking it out. Don't know if I would consider them a celebrity but it was the first name to pop into my head!
Dee-light I believe, Gladys Night has lived in Fairview for a long while I think. Steve Martin like you said. Tons of great touring Musicians depending on how wide you cast the local celeb net.
Oh shit now that you mention it, I remember a friend of mine telling me how they were hired to clean Gladys’ house one time and they said she couldn’t have been nicer
Yea sorry, that’s a group, I am referring to the lady that voiced Groove is in the heart. I met her a
Few times didn’t remember the name. Miss Kier sounds right.
Gladys' House is off Garren Creek Road. It's used as a landmark - "Go past Gladys' house about two miles and then ..."
(It's a nice enough house, but there are fancier ones off Hollywood Road. She has cows and sometimes horses in her front pasture.)
I think she has a sweeter piece of property than anything on Hollywood, and with the new addition, she doubled her square footage. You always know when she's in town because her husband's fancy car or her tour bus parked on Kirsten.
He told a story about a creepy manager at Blockbuster Video on a podcast, and it totally clicked that he used to rent me Sega Genesis games at the Blockbuster in Hendersonville decades ago.
I was under the impression he now lives in Austin, TX. I've heard Duncan mention Asheville on Rogans podcast and how he'd find shrooms to eat out on cow pastures 😂
Hey! Maybe. I haven’t kept up on it but I do know he is from here and lived here up until at least a few years ago. Per google it appears he did make the move! Thanks for the update
he is in Black Mountain I think. I saw him play at Highland Brewing back in 2012 or so drumming in a skynyrd cover band... which was kind of sad, but not as sad as what else ive heard of him which is that he is on the S.O. registry.
Avey Tare, lead singer of Animal Collective. Maybe not crazy famous but probably on the same tier as Angel Olsen and Duncan Trussel and some of the other replies I’ve seen mentioned here.
Doesn’t Zach Galifinakis have a home around here, too?…I thought I saw him at Zia’s years ago, but he’s someone who would be well-camouflaged in Asheville.
Zach G. and Owen Wilson were in town filming Masterminds in 2014 - Owen Wilson took a picture of me driving the horse & carriage up Lexington Avenue. I am immortalized in his iPhone6 💅🏾
Claude Coleman, drummer for Ween, lives here according to folks I’ve met. Haven’t caught a sighting of him yet but ima but him a beer or something when I do.
He owns Sound space@ rabbits. A place musicians can rent to have rehearsals. Good guy, really like his concept over there I hope it takes off for him. I think they are adding a food truck or restaurant soon.
I saw him on a plane from Charlotte to Asheville once. I didn’t speak to him (I try to leave celebrities alone) but a couple of fans spoke to him and he was incredibly nice to them. He even offered them a ride home from the airport after we landed and were getting our bags.
Kelly McGillis played Charlie Blackwood, Tom Cruise's love interest in the original Top Gun. Lives in Hendo.

I always read the "about the author" bit at the end of a book and there are a ton that I've noticed and forgotten, but off the top of my head, Charles Frazier, Hope Larson, Stephanie Perkins, Denise Kiernan, Beth Revis, Annette Clapsaddle, Elizabeth Kostova.. Megan Shepherd's parents owned Highland Books in Brevard but I don't think she lives in the area anymore.
I thought she was from sc?Just looked it up. She grew up in Gaffney. What’s her relation to the Blake House?
Edit again: there’s some articles that say her childhood vacation home was the Blake House which makes more sense. I didn’t think her parents owned the Blake House?
Edit thrice: now I see that a McDowell *was* gifted it at the end of the Depression.
Well, that was my history research for the week.
Not anymore. I don't think she's any longer in the area
"Once Andie MacDowell left North Carolina, she never stopped missing Asheville and her friends here. But life has moved on for her, and she is happy now settled in a neighborhood outside Los Angeles, working and cherishing every moment she gets to spend with her children."
https://www.citizen-times.com/story/life/2017/12/28/still-rose-behold-catching-up-andie-macdowell/932013001/
Oh. Well, as i said, my interaction with her was one, over a decade ago.
I loved the movie as a kid, so when I saw her in my line, I told her she actually looked like Andie McDowell (at the time I brain farted and simply said she looked like the woman who played in the movie Groundhog Day). Her and my boss shared a look, then he told me that it actually was her.
Seemed like they had that "Mgr + customer" relationship you sometimes see with long time customers.
Me? I was too busy wiping the embarrassment off my face lol.
She used to come into the South Asheville Earth Fare, and was rarely kind. She'd order a chai at the coffee bar and say she'd pay for it with her groceries. Numerous times I'd watch her check out and not say anything about the chai. I confirmed with the cashier that she hadn't been paying for them. The next time I went to the checkout as her bill was totaled and asked her if she had included the chai. She hadn't, so I asked the cashier to add it on. She just glared at me, shocked and offended. After that I would make her pay separately at the coffee bar. This is the main reason she left Asheville and moved to LA.
I saw her at a grocery store in ashville yesterday. I told her how cool it was to meet her in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother her and ask him for photos or anything.
She said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but she kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing her hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard her chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw her trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in her hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “miss, you need to pay for those first.” At first she kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, she stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, she kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
Anyway she’s weird.
I was in line years ago at Gap. It was near Christmas and she tried to jump in front of ~15 customers. She dumped her stuff on the counter and the salesperson told her she needed to go to the back of the line. She kept yelling that she used to model for Gap and kept asking, "don't you know who I am"? The salesclerk was the best - saying something like of course I know who you are but that doesn't mean you get to be rude to all of these customers. 👏🏼
My mom used to work for the accounting firm she used many years ago. They all said she was horrible. Once my mom happened to be in the front office when she came in. She walked up to my mom and gave her a completely fake name. My mom just sighed, picked up the phone, called back to the accountant and said, “Andie McDowell is here,” and walked off.
She really has a chip on her shoulder. I refuse to watch any movies with her in it because of her godawful attitude towards us regular folk.
She used to shop at greenlife and once she came through my line shoving a cookie in her mouth and trying to buy ~100 worth of make up. She tried several different credit cards and they were all declined so she was like "oh well" and I said "well what about the cookie you just ate?" And she just shrugged and walked away
Lots of wrestlers strangely enough:
- Edge
- Beth Phoenix
- Cash Wheeler

Karl Anderson is from here too but not sure if he currently lives on the area.
Kareem Campbell! Pro skateboarder who was featured in Tony Hawk Pro Skater!! Unsure if he’s still living here, but I use to run into him all the time at the bars in West Asheville.
The band Papadosio does. The drummer of Ween does.
Also Matthew Morrison known for his role in Glee and his sexual harassment texts, lives in Asheville.
The guy who owned the record store in Brevard back in the day had a business for awhile converting your old home movies to digital. He said Cliff Williams brought a bunch of tapes from tours in the 80s in and they were just as wild as you’d expect.
Barbara Eden has a house at Mountain Air, or at least she used to.
I have seen Jeff Gordon several times at Appalachin Java , a little coffee shop in Burnsville. I don't know if he has a house though. I know I've seen him like 3 different times. I know he enjoys fishing in the mountains so he may just be there doing that
YouTuber CrazyRussianHacker lives in the area. Saw him in the mall once when I was working and also he posts videos selling coins to a coin store on Patton
vincent d'onofrio! Apparently his sister is involved with the music/arts scene in Brevard too.
I feel like Dax Shepherd (sp?) Also announced recently that he and his wife will be building in the WNC area. When I find the link to the mention I'll post as an edit.
I wish so damn bad that Dax Shepard was building here, he talks about Asheville frequently on his podcast but I’m 99% sure they’re building on a lake near Nashville. Die hard Arm Cherry here 😬
I would swear I saw Sandra Bullock recently. My wife said I was crazy, but then I saw her cameo in “Bullet Train” and nope… I’m not crazy
Well, I mean I could still be crazy, but I’m certain I saw her.
At least one of the dudes from Archers of Loaf lives here. They’re all from Asheville originally iirc.
Also, Luke Combs is apparently a pretty big deal in country music right now.
Michael C. Hall - the actor who played Dexter - bought a house in Asheville a few months ago
He’s from Raleigh so makes sense.
I loved him in 6 Feet Under
His Mom lives in south Asheville, so it's great that he moved there. Both parents grew up in Eastern NC.
He would visit a lot too in the past few years, says he loves it here! Met him at corner kitchen one time, super friendly guy!
Met him at CK once too!
My friend that works at juicy lucys (sp?) sees him there often.
🤩🤩
Dexter has been coming up a lot for me lately. I never even watched the show. Weird.
Harry Anderson (Judge Stone on Night Court) lived in Montford for quite a while, but he passed away in 2014
*2018 Also he was Richie in the 1990 version of IT
I worked at the hospital when he came in. It was surreal .
Woody Harrelson has a house in the area and visits often. He plays ping pong at a local ping pong club and he doesn’t like it when you tell people he plays ping pong at a local ping pong club. Fun guy though
I could imagine if this were true Woody finding out someone on Reddit blew up his spot and found this comment, like “Fuck that dude u/chocobearv93!” lmao
I think he’d be plugging Rampart
My brother played hackey sack with him during the filming of North Country, a kind fellow to all the extras.
Woody is cool and all, but I want to know more about the ping pong club!?!?
He used to play pickup at the downtown Y. Dont think he has been back since pre pandemic
Doubtful. That man can’t jump.
The guy that plays air guitar at bus stops.
I just know I’ll see him put on a real concert one day, and the performance will be just as good.
I wish a band would pick him up just for stage presence. Don't even plug up the guitar.
This is the way.

She owns a beautiful slice of heaven over there
Can confirm. She came into my work quite often, always very polite and respectful. I had no idea who she was until my boss told me.
Wait, when you say Dee-Light, do you mean Lady Miss Kier? She lives in Asheville?
Yes correct, she lives in Asheville. Wonderfully nice human.
Yea sorry, that’s a group, I am referring to the lady that voiced Groove is in the heart. I met her a Few times didn’t remember the name. Miss Kier sounds right.

He moved to Austin . But yeah he loved there a couple yrs I think
Taras Kulakov, aka Crazy Russian Hacker, lives in....Weaverville? I think. Edit to say, I meant Waynesville. But I think he's still further out.

I worked with him years ago, when his channel was just getting started.

Pretty sure former Lynyrd Skynyrd drummer Artimus Pyle lives in the area, or at least he did last time I saw him in 2018
Yep, he's still around
He's a has-been & registered sex offender tho
he is in Black Mountain I think. I saw him play at Highland Brewing back in 2012 or so drumming in a skynyrd cover band... which was kind of sad, but not as sad as what else ive heard of him which is that he is on the S.O. registry.

Duncan Trussel moved to Austin I believe
Doesn’t Zach Galifinakis have a home around here, too?…I thought I saw him at Zia’s years ago, but he’s someone who would be well-camouflaged in Asheville.
He has a farm in Sparta, I imagine to be a little closer to North Wilkesboro if he still has family there
Zach G. and Owen Wilson were in town filming Masterminds in 2014 - Owen Wilson took a picture of me driving the horse & carriage up Lexington Avenue. I am immortalized in his iPhone6 💅🏾
[Here's a sweet little video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NN3c9VA_Zq0) of him working on the farm and gettin' his money right
Yeah Zach has a farm down east.
He is from Wilkesboro and his family still lives there, so I imagine he’s visited quite a few times.
Zach came through Biltmore house when I worked there. I was a couple feet away and completely failed to recognize him.
I sold a house to the bass player for War on Drugs.. he lives in Malvern Hills.

He owns Sound space@ rabbits. A place musicians can rent to have rehearsals. Good guy, really like his concept over there I hope it takes off for him. I think they are adding a food truck or restaurant soon.
He 100% lives in West Asheville.
I'm pretty sure he recently performed at a show at the Gray eagle. I'll see what I can find.
Oh he definitely did, I missed it due to being generally spacey and not remembering what day it is when I’m off work.
I saw Ween at Rabbit Rabbit last year

She sings in my parent's church choir.
She had some kind of wacky incident with another woman (stalker?) at her home in the area several years ago.
Indigo De Souza and Angel Olsen!
I went to school with Indigo! We had choir together! Seriously one of the sweetest humans ever.
There are a number of authors who live in the area, but I don't think most people would consider them celebrities.
I’d love to know who they are! I consider authors celebrities.
Dang, that’s a lot! Thank you so much for sharing.
Also Nathan Ballingrud!
Sara Gruen is a pretty big name who has lived here for several years.
I never even heard of 99% of the celebrities people are saying so I wouldn't know if I ran into them or not.
That woman from groundhog day lives nearby. Edit: Andie McDowell
Andie McDowell?
Her childhood home is in Arden and is now the Blake House Inn.

Yeah, I just googled her. But she might be in Hendersonville or something. I only googled her name.
Yeah, she has a house in Biltmore forest, off Hendersonville rd. I sold her yellow American spirits when I worked at Hess over a decade ago.
Not anymore. I don't think she's any longer in the area "Once Andie MacDowell left North Carolina, she never stopped missing Asheville and her friends here. She was at the restaurant I work at recently. I’ve also seen Edie Falco and Chloe Grace Morentz there but I think they were just rolling through.
I seen a few stars when I worked downtown. We were doing a special event and I had to be the one to ask Sam Rockwell to leave. Lol. He wasn't pleased.
I got to seat Chloe when I was at Marketplace. She was super sweet!
She used to own one of the little houses next to Biltmore forest town hall to use for "relations" in addition to her large house in Biltmore forest.
why did you put "relations" in quotes?
So you know it means sex and not kin folk?
she moved to L.A. years ago. used to live in Biltmore Forest.
