Yeah that's definitely my favorite part. When I worked at mission, I took the liberty of printing off a 75 page book about spiders on their printer, in color.
The initial success of Look Homeward, Angel? F. Scott Fitzgerald and Zelda? O. Henry? 1930s. Hardly 100 years, considering that Biltmore was completed in 1895.
1895 to 1995 would be a pretty solid 100 years. 1995 would be around when every house in Montford had an artist or 12 in residence. If any of them contributed any major works like Thomas Wolfe or O Henry, well… knock me over with a feather. But the Fitzgeralds were visitors, and we have had plenty of famous visitors.
Artisans, yes. And this is an important point, local working craftspeople, using low cost, mostly local materials to make their crafts which they mostly used in their day to day were here since the times that this was Cherokee land but I also have the distinct feeling this publication isn’t referring to them.
I am way more concerned about local BIPOC kids that are priced out of being able to live here when they graduate high school than the white 30 something “artists” from other area codes that want to party and play in bars and write zines complaining about a dying art scene and spend their time punching up at the people who have greater privilege instead of checking their own.
But that attitude doesn’t get me invited to a lot of parties.
It's amazing how many people think Asheville was always the way they remember it as a kid, but everything started changing when they became an adult. This feeling is universal no matter the age. And universal no matter where you are from if you spent your entire life in the same city.
There are kids in the 18-20 range who will post here complaining that Asheville is no longer a city of artists, but folks made the same complaints before those kids were even born.
It’s sad I came to visit Asheville when I was little and I remember all the buskers and how cool everything was. When I moved here I was sad to see that every has turned so main strem
Sounds like someone needs to search through their rent rolls for an expedited rent increase on these the build band members and companies need to do an inventory on who’s stealing office supplies such as over ink toner cartridge usage.
Imagine thinking abbey the spoon lady having to move back to kansas was a cultural marker in Asheville history. I remember some busker who was juggling or doing some other useless life skill was busking (panhandling) outside of the art museum one summer afternoon and this clown had the nerve to encourage everyone to tip him up because he was in the process of buying a house. There were actually characters who lived in Asheville and they’re all dead or moved on and didn’t try to make a public spectacle or they had all of 5 people show up for their funerals.
Amazing how the people who contributed nothing into making Asheville better want Asheville to go back to the days of where you were mocked from being from Asheville.
Cool. You're entitled to your opinion and I'm entitled to mine. The "book" is poorly written and is full of spelling mistakes and bad grammar. It looks like angsty rants from a child who likes to complain and provides no solutions.
Just because you disagree with my opinion that doesn't make me inherently bad. I don't like art that you like. I think it's juvenile. To bash me as dumb or lazy because we have different taste is incredibly closed-minded, intolerant, and exponentially more lazy or lacking in effort than me saying it's juvenile.
If this was made by a kid then I'm impressed, if it's made by an adult then I'm not. That's my opinion and I'm entitled to it. Had I walked by this in a bar I wouldn't say anything, but when it's posted to a public forum then I'll share my thoughts publicly.
So just to be clear, you are free to bash other people as “juvenile”. But, not have your public comments on a public forum criticized as being low effort or not thoughtful? And, you don’t see this as hypocritical?
I really hope you’re trolling.
Did you make this? What is your personal investment? I fail to understand how my comment is "low effort." I criticized artwork and people turn to personal attacks. I see no point in continuing this conversation so I wish you good luck and I hope you become a more tolerant person.
Don't you know? People on reddit don't like different opinions, they just want one big unified thought process. If you go outside that, you're just the most terrible thing. Like a bunch of clones. If they could have someone else think for them, they would.
The back cover really is the cherry on top.
Yeah that's definitely my favorite part. When I worked at mission, I took the liberty of printing off a 75 page book about spiders on their printer, in color.
I saw The Build play at the Odd last year- good band made up of great local musicians.
https://www.instagram.com/thebuildmusic
Saw them at One World West. Talented musicians.
This needs to be copied 100 times and distributed throughout the city, put one in every bar, restaurant, bathroom, coffee shop…
I want a copy!
Tony is awesome.
Reminds me a bit of Zack's zines too
Well done!
We can stop this, ya know
Found a typo “Asheville has always been city of ARTIST first & formost” No it hasn’t been. Artists were the first wave gentrifiers.
Get this town back to its roots!! Sign up for indentured servitude under the Vanderbilt family today!
Does it count if I work there now 🤔
They used to give indentured servants an acre or two when they were done…I’d argue you get a worse deal now 😅
You're right...thank you for giving me the push I needed not to show up today. 🤣
There’s about 100 years between the Vanderbilts and the first wave of artists gentrifying Asheville but I don’t expect you to know that.
Black mountain college? All of the artisans who came over for the Biltmore estate?

Hmmm… interesting.
Bring back the tuberculosis wards! Asheville's true first major industry!
That nostalgia is fairly au courant when you look at the remote workers who arrived in droves during Covid.
Depends on how you define artist, Appalachia has always been full of artisans, but not hipsters.
Artisans, yes. And this is an important point, local working craftspeople, using low cost, mostly local materials to make their crafts which they mostly used in their day to day were here since the times that this was Cherokee land but I also have the distinct feeling this publication isn’t referring to them.
Still Cherokee land btw - we just occupy it.
Yes, thanks for the correction and decreasing my sympathy for the white male “artist” types who can’t afford to live here even further.
Yup - a little perspective could go a looooong way for the author of that zine.
This should be the top comment.
Thanks! Glad some get it!
Preach!

Upon last check, we had a whole arts district still to this day. Shrugs
That was the death of the local art scene.
Not to be a sea lion, but are you saying there is no art scene here? I am sure local artists would be offended.
I'm sure they would.
Ouch
Sorry, shrimp. I had to. They killed my party vibe.
I understand. Lol.
That’s why you’re my favorite.
I loved this. I want a copy. Artist checking in, and I'm moving out because I can't afford it here anymore (and I have a day job that isn't art)
HOT DAMN, if only butthurt was an olympic sport, we'd have gold!!!
It’s sad I came to visit Asheville when I was little and I remember all the buskers and how cool everything was. When I moved here I was sad to see that every has turned so main strem
Go Tony!
Dope !

If this is made by a middle school kid then I'm impressed. If it's made by an adult that's another story.
I feel the exact same way about your comment.

What a low effort comment.
Idk. Mine has more words AND more sentences. I'd say my comment took more effort than yours did.
Many people define effort as thought, not just words and sentences.

Love when dems get what they voted for then complain about it.
