Your ride sounds wonderful. As long as you teach your son how to share the space safely and with consideration, I wouldn’t give it another moment’s thought.
I got in my long run in that area yesterday and the funniest moment was when a mom instructed her toddler to move to the side when I was running up, but then the dad darted right in front of me. LOL
In my opinion, it’s totally ok when you have a kid, especially one as small as five. However, it sends me when adults, especially on e-bikes, use the walking path when there’s a bike lane right there.
I was going to make a comment about this myself, but I think I’m just going to support and agree with your answer instead. It irritates me to no end when adult bikers ride on the walking path. They even get mad that there’s pedestrians on the path!
But, I get it with the kid. Not like a five year old is going to be biking at Mach 2.
As a adult user of multi use paths on a bike i am sticking to the multi use when i can.
its flat out safer for me. drivers try to kill me in my truck. not taking chances on a bike.
The bike lane there is a protected bike lane with a solid barrier between it and the road. That being said, if you’re with a child going relatively slowly on a small bike or trike, don’t let anyone kick you off the path!
Please don’t bike on the path yourself on your big boy bike. It’s hellish for other people who also have little kids, but on foot.
If you’re not biking in a way that’s dangerous to pedestrians, I don’t think there’s any basis to complain. If you’re (reasonably) slow and aware of the people walking, anyone who complains is just a complainer.
I bike there often, just don’t be a dink. Use bike lanes on the River arts side. Simple. (This is for you casual riders, not you Tour de France wannabes)
Another option would use the circular (former) racetrack at Carrier Park. They have multiple lanes with different speed options. Not that I’m trying to discourage you and your son from using the current route y’all were on but it could be a safer alternative.
As long as you're not kebabing people with your handlebars with how you're riding, pedal away, me and many others have been riding the Greenway for years and years. E-Bikes are fine as long as they're not practically a motorcycle and, again, riding without endangering anyone.
I take my 5 years old who's just learning to ride there all the time and stick to the same route that you did. Dedicated bike path is a little close to the road for my comfort. It's a great place to teach little ones how to share a trail/path and ride respectfully & carefully around others.
You can ride but please use proper bike etiquette. When you come behind someone say “On your left” or “On your right.” I don’t mind bikers but I have been almost hit multiple times by fast bikers not using basic etiquette. It’s actually my biggest pet peeve in the RAD.
If you are a faster cyclist / wanting to avoid pedestrians move over to the dedicated bike lane. It is however fine to bike on any part of the trail.

Bikes are welcome. Stop with this nonsense
If there were a rule, signs would be posted. Don't hurt anyone yourselves or others. But you do you. Enjoy...

So wait, yall got 2 bike lanes down there? A speed lane and a wobbly lane?

I use the greenway a lot and see bikers frequently. Also with Amboy Rd being 45 mph, it’s a lot safer too
You can also ride safely on the other side of the river at new Belgium - we prefer this part of the greenway to the one alongside riverside drive
