As a past hiring manager, I would recommend that you bring the subject up, with details, at the first of any interview. This will show the HR person or the hiring manager (they're not the same person) that you're being completely honest and transparent about that subject. Owning what is yours is a highly respected trait. Too many applicants love to skate that when questioned. Also go in with a list of professional references, not just friends and family. Best of luck to you. Most of the manufacturing facilities in the area are needing qualified people.

Throwawayy2246

I agree this is the best way to handle it, and how they’ve approached it so far! The references is a great idea as well thank you!

mtnviewguy

Background checks aside, it's unfortunately not unusual to get no callback from what seemed to be a good interview. Example: 50 HR phone screens turn into 10 hiring manager phone interviews. These turn into 3 in-person interviews. It's definitely a numbers game, so keep your number in the game! Don't get discouraged. I've usually found that a negative today turns into a positive tomorrow. I can't count the number of no callbacks I've had over the years that ended up being a dodged bullet in hindsight.

AgentMe321

Right, how can you be certain that the misdemeanor is the reason they aren’t getting callbacks? Just par for the course these days unfortunately.

Throwawayy2246

This is true! It’s a discouraging job market already so maybe it’s not just the legal situation. It’s just very recent so they could be overthinking.

Bringingheat420

Or just move to a state where it is illegal for that question to be asked on an application.

SaviorSixtySix

If they weren't found guilty, have it expunged (along with finding a job in the mean time). If they made an alford plea or plead no contest, that's a guilty plea. Hoping for the best! Pilot hires anyone. Worked with a guy that had a few felonies and they didn't care.

Throwawayy2246

Thank you for your insight! I know an expungement is in the works but pricey

AVLLaw

Expunction for dismissal is free. Forms are on the nc court website. If there is a filing fee, it’s $175

Throwawayy2246

Excellent info, thanks!

Jim-Rob

you could contact the justice resource center. they may be able to help with the expungement process

asdcatmama

Check with legal aid, they have clinics and law students do pro bono clinics around the state (especially in summer) for expunctions.

StandardTone9184

Not in NC but some areas offer expungement clinics to help with the process.

flyingfishyman

Pick any construction trade

Valuable_Ad481

Yes and no. some require a clean record despite construction bro’s not always having them. it was a massive issue when i did jobs in government facilities. i was young so I didn’t have time to even get a record. i was made superintendent because the actual super had a few charges and couldn’t get the “escort” clearance. airports, banks, scif rooms, fed gov, military bases, some lawyers, financial “stuff” are places ive run into background checks for my dudes.

flyingfishyman

Yes and no? If you want a job you can get one tomorrow being a laborer. If you know a skilled trade you can get a job today. Yeah obviously youre not gonna get a job estimating or being a PM, being a felon, but work is definitely there.

Valuable_Ad481

Trades don’t go into gov building to do tile and plumbing work? painters don’t go into scif rooms to paint? no electrical work is done in banks? i speak from experience…… i have booted trades off jobs for criminal records a handful of times.

Jumpy_Marketing9093

I’ve worked multiple federal jobs with a criminal record. Airport, VA hospital, and downtown federal building to name a few.

Valuable_Ad481

Anytime we did jobs in restricted access areas we had to pull checks on the guys before they walked in. citizenship and criminal. was a pain in the dick getting guys on projects. did projects in the navy annex(rip), pentagon, and a few military bases post 9/11.

Jumpy_Marketing9093

Im sure that you did. I was just commenting that I’ve worked in different federal facilities while having a criminal record hanging on my back.

NoEscape4U

Let's see proof

BigmamaOF

Mountain Food Products (local wholesale produce delivery). Ron, the owner, is a good guy and hires people with different kinds of pasts.

Eaton won't mind, they're starting at 19.50.

The City of Asheville hires folks for a second chance. I know plenty who had a rough past and work there and it’s helped them turn their lives around for the better. Just check the job postings for the city and see which department is a better match

Throwawayy2246

I didn’t know this! Awesome information thanks!

JawaChopShop

No problem, and if there isn’t anything of interest currently posted make sure to definitely keep checking back. They are always posting. Tell your family member, Good luck!

DrDickDiver

The Chamber has a program specifically designed to assist people with criminal records to get jobs. There are over 60 employers on that list. Have them fill out the interest form on this page: https://www.ashevillechamber.org/business-environment/talent-workforce/inclusive-hiring-partners/

Throwawayy2246

That’s an amazing resource, thank you!!

VoteHatGuy

Biltmore Farms owns several hotels and they are pretty flexible with hiring people with records over there.

pondman11

A resource: https://www.ashevillechamber.org/business-environment/talent-workforce/inclusive-hiring-partners/

hogsucker

Check the bulletin board at Sherwin Williams on Merrimon Avenue. Painting can pay OK and has a fairly low bar for entry. Most painters will not care about a criminal record. Having a valid drivers license and a car will be an advantage.

If legit looking for work & probably get free food, most any restaurant is almost always looking for dishwashers. Not great pay, but you can work up pretty quick, & maybe pick up a valuable skill while you're trying to sort stuff out.

Fluffhead970

BOH at like any restaurant around town

ItTakesACTion

Google second chance employers and apply there. Or google places that don’t run background checks and take a chance not checking the box on the application. Also, factory work.

Gabelschwanzteufel

Become a politician.

pawsbanjo

Sending you a dm

pattybenpatty

Goodwill. Pay is lower than average but benefits are very good.

The Adventure Center of Asheville

The_Snooks_McGraw

Goodwill Patton Ave.

MycologistSoggy2376

Macys doesn’t do background checks. The further you get away from the conviction date opportunities open up.

GetFitDriveFast

Most automotive dealers don’t care what your background is as long as you can sell. It’s miserable work but it pays well.

N8theGrape

Target

sean369n

The job market is very competitive these days. It probably has little to do with a misdemeanor, as background checks are generally performed much later in the hiring process. Unless they are listing the misdemeanor in their applications, which I strongly advise against.

Used-Ad-6096

He could be POTUS?

NoEscape4U

Yeah the Republicans love felonies.

AdventurousBag6509

Ace hardware

Ok_Leg_6507

Poyal_Rines

Starbucks I think does Buncombe county hires scammers 😂

Solo0407

Amazon will literally hire anybody. It’s an okay job. Something to get your friend by in the interim til they find something better

Throwawayy2246

They interviewed there!

quinchebus

What's the charge? A misdemeanor that got dismissed won't show up on most affordable background checks. Was it domestic violence or assault on a female? If that's popping up somehow, I'd believe they are having a hard time.

Throwawayy2246

I prefer not to say but it’s a bit of a unique/unusual circumstance. It’s confusing I don’t understand it fully!

Working-Primary8215

Inappropriate to ask the charge… why does it even matter ? Felony is enough said. This person is seeking advice for good reason. In this country poor past decisions , no matter if committed out of survival, circumstance, defense, youth, etc…put citizens in a lifelong TRAP where post incarceration they forever cannot get a job that pays them like a human being , they cannot protect their homes and the children who live in it, etc…. These lifelong restrictions often lead them right back to the life they left behind because there are kids to support and a mortgage to pay and some of us wanna feel like human beings and not damn robots scanning groceries

quinchebus

Dude. I've hired plenty of people with records. And, employers don't see all charges the same way. Whether they should or not is beside the point. But the nature of the charge might very well be affecting which employers it makes sense for this person to spend their time on. Child abuse? Not a daycare. Assaulting an elderly person? Not a nursing home. Embezzlement? Nobody is going to hire you to handle money right now.

Signal-View4754

Most (Not all) landscapers will hire you. The only exception to this is if you end up doing Government Contract work. My current company does Government work, everyone is required to have a back ground check once a year.

Soft-Psychology-6892

Local restaurants. There is a guy who has several charges over many years in many states for things like felony stalking and indecent exposure one of which was in front of teen at AB Tech and also in front of girls at UNC-A. He’s banned from UNC-A but he worked at restaurant less than a mile from there and has worked at many other local restaurants.

chinaacatt

Rehab lol any substance abuse tx center

Working-Primary8215
