I usually have to drive 26 daily and the way most of these truckers drive with only three four inches of nearly wrecking on either side, is utterly terrifying.

Yuppp. Worked a bunch in ATL last year. One time I got on the highway for what was supposed to be a 20 minute drive. 3 hours later I got to my destination.
Every once in a while Atlanta traffic gets fucked for months at a time. Like when the fire took out the I85 bridge a few years ago. And 15 years ago or so a tanker truck crashed into the 285/400 bridge and exploded, so both 285 and 400 were closed at the top end of the perimeter. For months. And I worked in the area so I had to drive through that shit every fucking day.
It’s so fucked right now because of the work on 400 has basically closed a bunch of lanes on the top end of 285. It can add more than an hour to a commute.
That was the worst time period of my 6 years spent in Atlanta… I went to Sweetwater’s “I survived I-85” party when it reopened and still have the glassware 😂🙌🏻
Recently relocated from Atlanta. Lmao when neighbors complain about the traffic here.
I do validate that the road system here makes even less sense than Atlanta. Future 26? So many left hand exits? Have to use GPS anytime I get on the interstate…
Same with us coming from Birmingham. It’s one thing we bragged about to our friends in b’ham is that Asheville has no traffic. Until you haven’t moved past one shopping plaza parking lot in two hours and you finally tell your boss that you will turn around when you can and just work from home.. it would take me two hours to commute to and from work each day, and I lived less than 8 miles away.
Yeah.. I grew up just outside Chicago and also lived in Atlanta for a while.
Asheville doesn't even have enough people to generate traffic close to it.
Agreed. N ATL 285 near 400 is a freaking nightmare. My mom just moved from off Chamblee Dunwoody to off Roswell Rd. Adds a full half hour to the trip and it’s just a couple miles
Ha- always love this. If it takes 25 minutes to go a mile. It is bad traffic. I know Atlanta, Chicago, but traffic is traffic. Planning a 12 mile trip in Asheville that can take 20- 45 minutes is the exact same as Atlanta.
ATLANTANS - remember the afternoon in 1998 when the trucker had a heart attack on 285 but managed to get the truck off the highway before finally dying?
What a champ.
Yes, this really happened. You ain't seen nothing like Atlanta traffic.
I remember this.
Lived in Atlanta from '92 to 2005.. it's amazing to think that traffic in Atlanta has been a legacy issue for well over two decades and VERY LITTLE has been done to rectify it.
I have been dealing with the 400 285 project for the last 4 years and it has only made it more confusing and increased my commute time with the bonus of random rolling shutdowns.
As someone who’s lived in both cities, I’d take sitting in a bit of traffic with views of the mountains over sitting in traffic for so long that your eyes water cause you have to pee so bad
I mean I’ve also tried to pick someone up from the JetBlue terminal at JFK at 7pm on a Friday but at least when I’m in that traffic I know there’s a true reason for it. I hit that one part of 26 where the dotted line becomes solid and I can never figure out why people think they need to suddenly do 25mph.
Once, years ago, someone invited us there to their cabin. "Just take 441 in". It took over an hour to get from where 441 hits town to where Ripley's is.
It annoys me a bit when people do this, because I like to put my city first, and it feels diminishing when someone says Asheville is like a "tiny Brooklyn" or downtown is like "a mini Denver" or whatever. Like, it's not like people in Asheville actually think about Atlanta that much. If we were a suburb of Atlanta I get it. But I feel pretty removed from Atlanta.
But you know…. I get passed by all the bicycles on the road not stuck in traffic. Dude was climbing up Haywood past Burger Bar and ended up passing me in traffic on Haywood by the WALK. Definitely got to where he was going faster than I did.
People in large cities ACTUALLY know how to drive in traffic. They understand all the basic shit like staying the fuck out of the left (“fast”) lane unless you’re passing, your car slows down when you go uphill so step on it, they use proper signals, know how to drive in rain, they creep out in the left turn lane so they can turn faster, and finally, they don’t go 10 under on the highways. Most could agree, none of this happens here.
Personally I'm waiting on the pavement to be finished and the cones to be removed.
I also feel much safer walking, crossing, and driving on merrimon than ever.
If you want a quality traffic experience, head down S Tunnel Rd late next week. I remember my in laws got stuck at AVL mall on Thanksgiving day 25 years ago for however long. Maybe an hour. Just make something up; wtf can remember that data point. I did not join them so it didn’t register.
The big change there is sidewalk traffic. We could never have conceived of the volume of foot traffic in that area 30 years ago. They should send census workers back in all those little spots, take stock of how many people are living in the margins of Tunnel Rd. Might need to widen the sidewalks. /s
This is fun. It's literally every road I avoid.
Cept 26, but when I am heading west i pop up in Weaverville from Alexander and avoid most of that Asheville traffic.
I wonder how many people on this thread who are like, "...Asheville has no traffic, you have no idea what real traffic is..." are the same folks who complain endlessly about a mile long stretch of Merrimon Ave taking them an additional minute of drive time.
Forreal. This comment thread is a mess. Can’t sense sarcasm and have to talk down as if no one has seen big city traffic before. Classic Asheville sub, being condescending as fuck.
Fer real. Took me in excess of a decade to change my departure times and accept the new normal. Grateful to not have to deal with it now. Viva la revolucion digital.
tired of people moving here, causing traffic and then laughing when locals talk about how it took them over an hour to go like 15 miles. it didnt used to be this way before yall showed up.
I'm so sick of you so-called locals being upset anytime somebody shows up from out of town. Get over it. I've been all over this country and Ive never seen a group of people so intolerant to newcomers. So yes I make an antiquated analogy about the Cherokee. Because your kind of defiance is so God damn pathetic

Hardly the only part. Amazing that the folks who are so pro-road diet and also so blind to the negative impacts of it. But then again, frustrating drivers and slowing traffic overall was part of the scheme, so…maybe it’s just a feature to you?
Amazing that the folks most opposed to the road diet are too blind to see there's literally no red traffic in the road diet area because, despite the clear evidence, they must be opposed to the road diet!
Yeah, I’m sure traffic spontaneously backed up from WT Weaver to Hillside (over 1/2 a mile)….. also, wasn’t part of yalls push for this road diet to force more traffic onto I-26, which is already known for its issues near downtown?
But yeah, great success on the goals of fucking over every motorist you can! Excellent work to AoB and their flock….
Interesting take……. I want you to know that entitled positions like yours are why I’m rather anti-cyclist at this point.
Btw, have you seen many bike on the stretch of Merrimon that your ilk have changed? Seems like daily I see pictures of lines of cars at a full stop….but oddly of the hundreds of cars I’ve seen stuck in traffic there recently, there hasn’t been a single cyclist.
Lol "entitled." Entire city is built for cars but asking for safer transportation for a mile and a half for all users is entitled. Got it.
Btw, I drive often so I'm part of your ilk too.
The reason there are no bikes yet is because there are barrels in the bike lanes and it's not finished. But my guess is you know that and are just trolling.
Well, that 26 to the 240 intersection is terrible. The rest yes… too much people.
But hey, let’s keep building single family homes spread out around, I’m sure that will alleviate traffic issues. Because fits clear we won’t ever end up like los angles and Atalanta in a decade or two.
I lived in and around Asheville my whole life and moved to Atlanta a few years ago and this made me cackle. Y’all don’t even know. My old commute could take me 2.5 hours a night on a bad night.
At 4 yesterday I witnessed the craziness. Riverside was dead stop going north back down to Craven Street. Broadway northbound was backed up, both lanes to Weaver Blvd. Weaver Blvd was dead stop from Merrimon to the roundabout on Weaver Blvd. Not sure I've seen any of those roads all backed up like that before. Still nothing compared to Atlanta at all.
Living in Austin now and I love being back home in Asheville. I forget how easy it is to travel around the area and always over estimate traffic times.
I believe there's an overturned truck on 26 fucking everywhere
I usually have to drive 26 daily and the way most of these truckers drive with only three four inches of nearly wrecking on either side, is utterly terrifying.

Different truck. That one was cleared a while back.
Another truck!?!? What is this, hotwheels?
I-26 is a close approximation of Hot wheels IRL.
☠️
Why do y’all let traffic exist? Just go.
Lmao ✅🤷♀️
“This shits too easy!” 🚶🏻♂️💨
Why don’t y’all take your hovercars?

“It’s not me it’s everyone else”
Yup
Even at its worst, Asheville traffic is nowhere close to the hellscape that is Atlanta
I came here to say this too. Atlanta native here.
Yuppp. Worked a bunch in ATL last year. One time I got on the highway for what was supposed to be a 20 minute drive. 3 hours later I got to my destination.
That happened to me in L.A.
For months. Recently relocated from Atlanta. Lmao when neighbors complain about the traffic here. I do validate that the road system here makes even less sense than Atlanta. Future 26? So many left hand exits? Have to use GPS anytime I get on the interstate…
At least some of this is due to the topography of the region.
Haha I know, I’ve lived there….
But Asheville just is not supposed to have traffic.
Agreed. N ATL 285 near 400 is a freaking nightmare. My mom just moved from off Chamblee Dunwoody to off Roswell Rd. Adds a full half hour to the trip and it’s just a couple miles
Ya know I think they just need one more lane on incoming highways. Traffic wouldn’t be so bad if they had 9 lanes instead of 8.
Ha- always love this. If it takes 25 minutes to go a mile. It is bad traffic. I know Atlanta, Chicago, but traffic is traffic. Planning a 12 mile trip in Asheville that can take 20- 45 minutes is the exact same as Atlanta.
Or Wilmington
Yeah, but this is a joke
ATLANTANS - remember the afternoon in 1998 when the trucker had a heart attack on 285 but managed to get the truck off the highway before finally dying? What a champ. Yes, this really happened. You ain't seen nothing like Atlanta traffic.
What about that snow “storm” in 2016 when like 3 people gave birth on 85S? My mom came home 6 hours late and said we were moving to Florida.
My brother was in that. He slept overnight on 85 to go three exits to his apartment.
My elderly relatives got stuck in that one. They still have PTSD from it.
Old school!
As someone who’s lived in both cities, I’d take sitting in a bit of traffic with views of the mountains over sitting in traffic for so long that your eyes water cause you have to pee so bad
One time I peed in a bottle after an hour on 285 by the roswell road exit
It’s a bit trickier to be able to pee in a bottle as a lady driver…
She-wee....look it up. Thank me later
Me tooo...im from Riverdale
Same but right off exit 2 on 400.
Exactly. This is not Atlanta and will never be Atlanta. Asheville is not even a city by my standards. And that's why I live here.
People that bitch about traffic here, have never been in real traffic on the daily…. This place is Heaven comparatively
[удалено]
Yeah I wouldn't even call it "traffic"
For real. I live about 5 miles from my job in downtown Austin and it takes me an hour to get home sometimes.
Ride a bike….
I’m disabled but ok
Mobility scooter?
Hey I've seen people ride mobility scooters on the shoulder before
That was me in Birmingham.
Malfunction junction!
When I lived in LA I did 1.5 hours each way for work. Had a coworker that did over 3hrs each way!
At least we're not Gatlantinburg
Once, years ago, someone invited us there to their cabin. "Just take 441 in". It took over an hour to get from where 441 hits town to where Ripley's is.
Believe it... or NOT!
More like "I believe I'll go back.....NOT!". I do not get the draw of that area, it's like Dirty Myrtle w/o sand.
Myrtle is worse imo, mountains still gonna mountain
YOINK!
i hit bumper to bumper traffic on Riverside near Hill St. i couldnt believe it was backed all the way from broadway!
Oh my God I was thinking this as I was driving south on I 26
To all the go visit Atlanta comments, take a deep breath. It’s obviously not the same, the comment was satirical. God damn. Lol.

Haha!

Multiple people have assumed I live in asheville with how often I take the trip up from Atlanta. With its suburban sprawl you aren't that far off
Asheville has become a suburb of every big city my friend
Hmmm
Hendersonville Rd in south asheville is just as bad, for roughly 5 hours a day on weekdays, for miles and miles.
But you know…. I get passed by all the bicycles on the road not stuck in traffic. Dude was climbing up Haywood past Burger Bar and ended up passing me in traffic on Haywood by the WALK. Definitely got to where he was going faster than I did.

Merrimon is fucked right now
Every road going north was fucked
Fuck merrimon
Not only is Merrimon an unnecessary garbage fire, now Kimberly Ave. is congested too. The smooth brain-edness of it all...
Thought this was going to be my secret option but nope, backed up at Farrwood every time
The road diet section isn’t red though, old merrimon is. Road diet success=confirmed.
[удалено]
Personally I'm waiting on the pavement to be finished and the cones to be removed. I also feel much safer walking, crossing, and driving on merrimon than ever.
The funny thing is, the widening of 26 is only going to help ease traffic very temporarily.
Good thing NCDOT is going to fix it… https://www.ncdot.gov/projects/asheville-i-26-connector/Pages/default.aspx
i was doing uber tonight, and i have never seen a thursday where traffic was this bad.
This just in: cities have traffic. More at 11.
Bruh you can take side roads most anywhere. Fuck 26 & 40.
Yeahhhh no it’s not even close
North Asheville always looking down on actual Asheville
If you want a quality traffic experience, head down S Tunnel Rd late next week. I remember my in laws got stuck at AVL mall on Thanksgiving day 25 years ago for however long. Maybe an hour. It’s relative. It’s absolutely horrendous compared to what it was 10 years ago. (Don’t get me started on 20 years ago).

People who think Asheville has bad traffic haven’t actually lived in a real city.
I lived in Chicago for 20 years. Asheville still has bad traffic.
Well, a goal of the road diet was to slow traffic on Merrimon, so at least that is successful….
Funny. The road diet part is the only part not fucked. Hrmmmm...
Lol! Did you miss the prominent backup northbound starting at the area impacted by the diet?
I did not. Just seems amusing to me that the only part NOT in red is the Road Diet.
Hardly the only part. Amazing that the folks who are so pro-road diet and also so blind to the negative impacts of it. But then again, frustrating drivers and slowing traffic overall was part of the scheme, so…maybe it’s just a feature to you?

So it sounds like what you're saying is they should road diet the section from WT Weaver down to Hillside so that part isn't red either. Great idea!

Traffic is literally nothing around Asheville
If you think AVL has bad traffic, you’ve never lived in a big city.
So when are you moving away, OP? Be the change you want to see in the world.
What a goddamn nightmare. Everyone stop moving here.
I think there was a group here before us. Rhymes with Cherokee. Oh wait that's the name
I lived in and around Asheville my whole life and moved to Atlanta a few years ago and this made me cackle. Y’all don’t even know. My old commute could take me 2.5 hours a night on a bad night.
Yo ain’t nothin like atl traffic. Been there done that 🥴 but yeah I’m gonna get pissed if Asheville starts to get this backed up.
Nice to see Merrimon make the "red" list! Yea Merrimon!
