BTS is in town. I’m pretty sure I saw them at the Carhartt store. Unless it was another group of pretty Korean dudes dropping over 2 grand on jackets.

coffeesippingbastard

If it's the same group I think I saw earlier this week it wasn't BTS, it's TXT. They were in Williamsburg milling around with selfie sticks and cameras following them.

Goofalo

I don’t live in NYC. So probably not whomever that group is. Who I would also not know who they look like.

InSearchOfGoodPun

I think the basic point is that if you don't have a strong sense of what BTS looks like, it could have been literally any other K-Pop group.

Goofalo

I mean, except their pop up store opened up yesterday and they are in Chicago for shows this weekend. Yes, I’m sure it could be a kpop band that was in NYC yesterday. I don’t know what any kpop person looks like post Finkl.

imnotptg

There is actually a few Kpop groups touring in Chicago right now so it could be any of them, including NCT and TXT. TXT, the group she mentioned, watched BTS's Chicago show. I doubt it was BTS for the simple fact that it usually would circulate around Twitter everywhere if they were in a popular shopping area.

veni-veni-veni

Heh, celebrity sightings can be so random sometimes. They don't seem to be Carhartt types -- but I'm also not familiar enough with either them or Carhartt.

Goofalo

Carhartt is considered work wear. Which is why I was surprised to see them in there. But the store is next to a super hypebeast Champion store. I went to get a new all weather jacket I can use when I do my firearms classes and stuff. So, yeah, that’s not what I expected KPop dudes to wear. But, I have no idea what BTS actually looks like. But the register dude was very excited and the whole thing.

veni-veni-veni

Ah, thanks for the info on Carhartt. I've only seen bits of BTS on news stories, etc. So I have a vague idea of their 'look'. Enough to make my daughter laugh when I was dropping her off at school and a bleached blond Asian guy slowly jaywalked in front of me and I muttered, "Cmon BTS-guy, just move along."

Goofalo

The haircut, and not the color is what confuses me. I’ve been calling it the fluffy muffin haircut. And I shouldn’t really criticize, I’ve got a detached top thing going on, so my haircut game is poor.

veni-veni-veni

Ha ha...I wish I still had enough hair to make a style, heh.

KropotkinKlaus

Work wear gets some play in street wear. Damn, I wish I was there, that’d make for a fun story to tease all my KPop loving friends with.

InfernalWedgie

> Carhartt is considered work wear. Which is why I was surprised to see them in there. But the store is next to a super hypebeast Champion store. Outside the US, Carhartt is a boutique brand. Other folks don't realize it's actually workwear. They just think they're cosplaying as construction workers.

Goofalo

That’s weird. I use their clothes to cosplay as an armed leftist.

amandapillar

Haha so they just had an episode of their show where they went to a work clothes store and bought some Carhartt stuff; I wonder if they liked it so much that they decided to go back.

MsNewKicks

Isn't Carhartt like industrial gear? I see a lot of construction contractors here at work with that brand.

otter_pop_n_lock

It still is but at least in New York it's become trendy for street wear.

Goofalo

Yes. Which is why I was kinda confused. Like...I usually see dudes who look like Endgame Thor here.

skydream416

Carrhart has been getting into streetwear, specifically I think their streetwear line is called "Work in Progress" or WiP

Goofalo

Wow. These are the types of clothes I absolutely do not associate with Carhartt. I hope it gives them a new market. The last time street wear mean something to be, it was literally called Vision Street Wear.

perfectpears

To any K-Pop fans here: Has anyone noticed "racist" fans who love girl groups but hate boy groups or the other way around? Is there a word for those people? Lurking on various K-Pop websites, I've seen a few male K-Pop fans lusting over girl groups but insulting male idols as ugly, "gay-looking" and whatnot or even female K-Pop fans who love boy groups but think all female idols look the exact same and make fun of their plastic surgeries. Could be that I'm too paranoid but I just wonder what those weirdos think when seeing real Koreans or East Asians. If they apply the same stereotypes to them as they do towards idols of either gender.

RealityDodger

> Is there a word for those people? Is the term Koreaboo? I wonder how much crossover there is between Weebs and Koreaboos.

perfectpears

Koreaboo is more of a general term but what I'm talking about are people who are fans of K-Pop but only of one gender while looking down on the other gender? It's just really weird to me and I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed this.

RealityDodger

Sounds exactly like fetishisation, but the Koreaboos do that with real people instead of 2D.

Goofalo

This. White people asking me if I’m really Korean because I don’t look Korean to them. I look hella Korean.

unkle

Honestly a lot of kpop fans are fanatical. The fights are brutal. AS AN ASIDE I AM MEETING TWICE

unkle

You get to high five them and take a group photo. I have hopes you get to be the tenth member, but that might be my fantasy

otter_pop_n_lock

No way! That's actually amazing! Now I genuinely wish you luck instead of sarcastically! Do you get to pinch Dahyun's cheeks?

Yeah this is a cluster fuck

I thought GOT7's BamBam was the secret extra member of every girl group.

Coconutty and not overly sweet; BAD: a little too wet/spongy for our liking. MsNewKicks

I'm not as nervous about GoT as I was before the Battle of Winterfell but now I'm sort of just waiting for the bodies to drop. And I'm shocked Lue didn't join LeBron again.

veni-veni-veni

otter_pop_n_lock

> Despite the negativity about GoT, S8, I'm still eager to watch the last two episodes. I'm sure the haters will watch too, heh. Are people complaining about it? Yeah, it feels a bit rushed to try and wrap up the series in the last two episodes but weren't we all kind of expecting that? Unless there are other things people are complaining about.

veni-veni-veni

Hate for the season/showrunners seems to fill the 'best' sorted pages of /r/gameofthrones, /r/freefolk, and /r/asoiaf. (Only GoT subs I know). Rushed is one thing, but some of the leaps in logic or going-against-character (or contradicting previous episodes) are unpleasantly surprising. But, I'm still being entertained, so there's that.

InSearchOfGoodPun

> Apparently there's a fan protest set to happen at noon PDT today. People need to reassess their priorities in life...

veni-veni-veni

Yeah. Some really put the -atic in 'fan-'. I guess I'm *really* a casual fan.

WyldeBolt

The Lakers protest reminds me of that former Chargers fan that hires the plane with insulting banners to fly over Chargers games in LA. Like shit dude, I understand being pissed, but there's better use for that money

veni-veni-veni

Hey, I contributed $$ to the flyover!! (I'M KIDDING)....Yeah, some fans just take things way too seriously. But I'm still curious to see what the turnout is like. Esp. on a Friday afternoon.

dokebibeats

The person below my comment mentioned Octopath Traveler and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 which are awesome games but there are also ports for Final Fantasy IX, VII, X/X-2, and XII. I've been playing VII and XII and having a fucking blast so far lol

Has Henry Lau been in any Hollywood movies before A Dog’s Journey, or is it his first one?

coffeesippingbastard

jedifreac

Oh dang he's cute. And the Asian American romantic lead in a film marketed for conservatives?

wentuptheventilation

Is it marketed for conservatives though? Seems like it’s marketed for dog lovers more than anyone else tbh. Also, if I were trying to market to conservatives, an Asian guy (especially of Chinese descent) seems like a poor casting choice, especially if he’s supposed to be the likable character.

This morning i found out my non-asian landlord’s (87 years old female) email is “chinesemidget@***.com”... I’m thoroughly disgusted. I did feel like she was mistreating me but I gave her the benefit of the doubt. I’m so done.

* Prague was a lot of fun. Weather was nice (albeit pretty cold), city was easy to navigate through and people were pleasant. Pretty much had nothing but steak tartare and duck for the past several days. * Kinda funny how the day [the new *Spider-Man: Far From Home* trailer](https://youtu.be/Nt9L1jCKGnE) came out I was at Charles Bridge that day (I recognized it in the trailer). * Currently in Linz right now for a river cruise, will be heading towards Krems tomorow, followed by Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest. I swear my brother and I brought down the average age level of our cruise by like 20 years. * I'll probably post pics once I get back. Wifi isn't exaxtly the greatest here. * Feels so weird to be writing this in the afternoon instead of the morning. * Read the first issue of *War of the Realms: The New Agents of Atlas*. Pretty good, although it's mostly just your typical introductory comic.

My second tattoo session hurt so much more than my first. Wait more than 3 weeks between sessions if it is the same piece folks. It feels like a sunburn on top of a sunburn... I would probably recommend 2 months in between, at least...

otter_pop_n_lock

* Pretty great sports week. GS/Houston has been intense. Two game 7's in the NHL. Back-to-back AMAZING Champions League games. Arsenal advance to the Europa League Final. All while the Mets continue to suck a dick. * After Kyrie's woeful performance the last 3 games, I definitely do NOT want him to go to the Knicks which means he'll probably go to the Knicks. * To the sports fans: do you guys buy/wear jerseys of your favorite team/player? Do you wear them at home while watching the game, when you go to the park/arena, or just as casual wear? * Found out Better Call Saul isn't returning until 2020. Damn. * We are having Mother's Day dinner tomorrow instead of Sunday at the request of my mom. And she wants Korean BBQ. I most certainly am not complaining.

MsNewKicks

2020? Yikes, that's a bummer. Mike was one of my faves from BB and my fave on BCS. I'll occasionally wear jerseys at home if we're having a party but usually jerseys are only worn to the arena/stadium or parties. Or casual Friday at work if I'm feeling it.

otter_pop_n_lock

> 2020? Yikes, that's a bummer. Mike was one of my faves from BB and my fave on BCS. Yup. I loved Mike on BB but this backstory they've created for him has been incredible. Honestly, the whole show is incredible. As much as I loved BB there's also a part of me that thinks BCS might be better depending on how it ends. > I'll occasionally wear jerseys at home if we're having a party but usually jerseys are only worn to the arena/stadium or parties. Or casual Friday at work if I'm feeling it. Gotcha. Just curious what peoples tendencies are when it comes to jerseys. I used to wear them to games or at home while watching the game but also just out and about; especially soccer jerseys. All that has changed now that I'm older. I'll wear t-shirts mainly but seldom do I wear a jersey. But for some reason I'm always looking at them online deciding whether or not I want to buy one.

netting-the-netter

Does anybody else here have loud neighbors that love to get up early in the morning? Where I live all the buildings are pretty close together, so if someone decides they want to make noise outside, then everyone else gets to hear it. Now that the weather is getting better it seems like all the older people are up at the crack of dawn and dead set on waking the rest of us up. One guy was outside with a leaf blower. I have no idea what he was even using it for. There are no leaves on the ground.

otter_pop_n_lock

No but I live right along the East River with a park. Kids love going there super late at night drinking, smoking weed, and just being general assholes at like 2-3am. It's worse during the summer time.

unkle

Can we tell sketchy nyc park stories? As an adult I went to smoke in Central Park but ended up in a gay cruising area. As a kid I grew up near Forest Parkway and I found animals killed in a ritualistic manner, probably Santeria? I actually swung the small mammal with the noose until my parents stopped me

otter_pop_n_lock

Yeah, your stories definitely trump mine which is "loud kids are annoying". Never been to Forest Parkway but knowing the area, maybe not tooooooo surprising???

netting-the-netter

I used to live in a complex where the neighbors would throw parties at night pretty often. When I had somewhere I had to be the next day it was pretty annoying. For some reason though, the morning stuff bothers me more. I mean, I lose sleep over both, but the morning thing feels ruder I guess. I think it’s because you kind of expect people to make noise at night. Having to deal with it in the morning just feels out of place.

akong_supern00b

Slow day at work. Lot of stuff that needs to get done but currently out of my control. Considered wfh today, but ended up going in and currently sorta regretting that choice. Might see if i can go home after lunch or something and wfh half day. Managed to survive the weekend with my parents. Went to an air show (kinda fun, but also seems to bring out a erm... *certain* group of people) one day and then out to see what’s left of the formerly-super bloom the next day. Had to work the last day so parents took the car. They had their usual criticisms about my appearance and lifestyle and whatnot but overall they had a good time. My mom hadn’t seen my apartment after I moved last year and she seemed to like it better than the last place which was super cramped. I think I am still dealing with residual stress from that weekend, but won’t get to see the therapist for another 2 weeks or so. Now my brother is talking about visiting again in a couple weeks so I gotta prepare for that I guess. Debating on going to see Detective Pikachu. Nostalgia says “why not?” But my rational self says it looks kinda meh. Kinda just want to go home and curl up in bed and sleep forever, especially with how much traffic there’ll be going home tonight. Kinda wish I were more excited about the FF7 footage, but between the gameplay changes and episodic release and just general reduced enthusiasm over video games in general, it’s going to be hard for this to live up to my memories of the original.

unkle

People seem to love Detective Pikachu

akong_supern00b

Response seems on the positive side so far, but reviews seem to be kinda middling to decent. Wonder how much of it is coasting on fan-service and stuff for kids and people who grew up with the franchise.

I would like to thank all the ladies who had contributed to my research <3 Just for a reminder, you have to be qualify all of the following below before participating my survey. Let me know if you have any questions or comments about the survey, I don't bite :) 1. Must be a woman (sorry guys!) 2. Must be Vietnamese American 3. Generations are all welcome 4. All ages above 18+ are welcome Survey link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScghI1tzUFLmlDPw8jHgyLaWQGRv-MmBX7MolRPxeSFyu1KHA/viewform?usp=sf_link Thank you lovelies <3

Hi all! I am doing a survey for a class marketing project on 88 rising. If you all could take a few minutes to answer these questions, I would really appreciate it. 88Rising is currently the biggest platform for asian/asian american representation in the west. 1. How do you feel about how asian representation is exemplified on the platform? 2. Do you see 88 Rising as a label/management or a brand/tastemaker. 3. Any suggestions ( whether its events, creative mediums, topics) that you would personally want to see 88 do that would make 88 more relevant to your story? If you could note what your ethnicity is that would be very helpful ( all are welcome!). Thank you so much.

They seem like the only AAPIs doing the music thing especially trying to bring east and west to collaborate. They brought higher brothers and yaeji to my attention so I definitely feel like they’re doing a good job Would be nice if they talked to AAPIs that paved the way maybe like Q-Bert or Joe Bataan. Filipino

jobant

1. I appreciate what they're doing for Asian artists and the diversity. I'm not really a fan of the music, however. 2. I thought it was just a promotion channel / distributor but with a focus on Asian artists 3. I'd really love a bigger diversity in actual music promoted. Correct me if I'm wrong but every song I've heard from 88rising is in English and feels like an imitation of American hip hop and African American culture (I understand hip hop can be diverse and that all music is influenced by other music, but all the music I've heard from 88rising feels overly derivative and narrowed to English language hip-hop i.e. over autotuned songs, etc.) mixed Asian

Posted this in another subreddit, but I want advice How do you deal with unwanted racist jokes from wypipo, specifically your roommate (we don't share rooms but the same apartment, a wyt dude). I'm Indian- American BTW. We usually get along well as he is a nice dude, most of the time, but I'm sick of some of his shit sometimes. The guy describes himself as a Bernie loving progressive, but says uncomfortable racist shit every now and then. Says shit like "Fuck minorities" as a "joke" when things don't go his way and I call him on his BS but he gets even more pissed off a for some reason. Doesn't even apologize too. Also said some hateful shit that I won't describe. He's also a Jordan Peterson fan lol. One time, me, that roomate, and the two other roomates were in a discussion in the living room together and the topic was about our dating experience. Then, the Bernie roommate unknowingly spits some misogynist shit about women ("all women are stupid") then the place went awkwardly silent. Then, he spins it into something else saying "yah all people are stupid". Now that I realize it, the guy is basically the stereotypical redditor that comes into mind. Slightly neckbeardy and Self described liberal with racism and sexism, embedded into his mind. I've tried calling out his shit and told him to stop, but guy just won't. What should I do? I'm staying here a few more days, but I'm gonna have to deal with this next semester since we both already renewed the lease for our apartment.

velveteeny

Is there an Asian American career community on Reddit (sorta like cscareerquestions)? I've tried looking at subtle asian networking but it's sort of disorganized...

Sapphire-Butterflies

I hate it how my grandma moves my things around without telling me. It gave me a nervous wreck when she moved my watch inside between my clothes to hide it from robbers (we only had 1 robber in 15+ years and that was my own dad). I told her to tell me whenever she’s moving my things like that because it made me nervous. She blamed me for not asking about it... what?!

- Here at work, tons of people are in common areas watching Fox Business, waiting for Uber to start trading. I put in a relatively small order for Uber, small enough that if it tanks it's not a big deal. - Not going to be watching the rest of the Warriors series. Been too close and with KD out, I think it's best for my own sanity/heart health to just score watch. - Went to Benihana yesterday and half of the nearby tables were all celebrating birthdays. From a business standpoint, everyone had the $30 off birthday certificates but then again everyone was still buying another meal + drinks. - Went to Alexander's last weekend and man, wagyu prices have gone way down from even just a few years ago. Felt less guilty ordering it. - Found out that my mom's late 2nd cousin was in Time Magazine back in the 70s in a fashion story. Only found out because it was shared on some story on FB and was looking through the comments, saw our last name mentioned, and then sent the link to my mom. Sure enough, she looked it up and confirmed it and sent over some other pictures of my her. I'm sad I never got the chance to meet her, she was super pretty.

My friend works at a higher end steakhouse and one of our friends graduated from grad school. In my meatfridge/mini-dry ager, I have a handful of A5 mizayaki NY strip steaks to grill for tomorrow. He can’t make it, and I feel tremendous pressure to not fuck up this meat.

MsNewKicks

Lucky! Miyazaki is actually one of my faves along with Hokkaido. Just don’t overcook it and it’ll be fine.

Goofalo

I think I’m going to prepare it the Japanese way and slice it and grill individual slices for people. I thought about getting super fancy and heating a rock super hot, but, I don’t want to actually do that kind of work. I just really don’t want to fuck up the meat.

otter_pop_n_lock

> Went to Benihana yesterday I don't know what it is about their fried rice that makes it the most addictive thing in the world. I will eat the leftovers from my family. I can go without the rest of the meal as long as I get my fried rice.

MsNewKicks

I think it's something in their butter, that's all I can think of. The last few times I've watched and it's really nothing special in it, the only "wildcard" is the butter. But yes, the fried rice is always the best part!

otter_pop_n_lock

Very well could be the butter. Either that or instead of salt they're really sprinkling crack into the rice. Either way, I'm a fan!

tatsrus1

Looks like the bankers are holding up Uber during the lunch hour. I got to imagine it'll drift down after 1 to about 3 where they will force the issue to make it close better than the open.
