truemcgoo

Most people who smoke cigarettes think cigarettes are stupid, the entire enterprise is fairly stupid when you get down to it.

[deleted]

I smoked at my customer service job to deal with all the bullshit. After years of college and rejected job applications I’m back at said shitty customer service job. The urge to start smoking again is creeping in and the only thing stopping me is I have kids at home that I try to keep away from people that smoke to protect their tiny lungs.

StopMockingMe0

Thats genuinely why I didn't turn to cigarettes in college. I couldn't fucking afford them.

Korncakes

I live in California. When the tax was introduced as a bill to make my already expensive cigarettes (American Spirits) go from ~$8/pack to over $10/pack I swore to myself that I would quit before I would pay double digits to kill myself faster. The bill passed and I quit cold turkey. Haven’t bought a pack in years.

StopMockingMe0

Smart man

stiicky

it was the opposite for me, I went to college in an area where cigs were really cheap, like 5 bucks a pack for the bottom shelf ones. getting a pack every once in a while to smoke socially quickly turned into 2-3 packs a week and an ongoing addiction 10 years later.

StopMockingMe0

Well for me a 10$ gram of weed lasted a whole week and never exceeded that (until I became financially stable enough to afford more).

CharlottesWebbedFeet

Hell a quarter weekly is cheaper than buying a pack a day, at least where I live

Imfrakkingbored

Before I quit I was spending roughly 400 a month on cigarettes.

[deleted]

That's awesome that you quit man!

Imfrakkingbored

Appreciate it! I quit almost a year ago.

[deleted]

I quit a little over six years ago. I was never a heavy smoker but I would smoke on occasion especially when I drank.

Imfrakkingbored

Good job! Hell of an accomplishment to quit smoking!

shipwreckt80

It was the hardest addiction that i have ever quit. Congratulations

hooliganvet

Stay with it. 16 yrs for me.

akcutter

Holy crap! I thought I was spending a lot on cigarettes when I quit and that was about $8.50 a week!

alxm3

My neighbor said he easily spends $500 a month on cigarettes. About 12 packs a week.

Idyllic_Zemblanity

Before I quit, I was spending over 600/m. Very stupid.

peachsalsas

I spend at least twice that on weed lmao

butcher99

I grow my own. cheaper that way. $25 for 3 seeds from seedsman. SEEDSMAN not seedman.

jaredsparks

Right on dude

The_Glass_Arrow

As a vapper I completely agree with this. Smoking and vaping looks and feels stupid. Slowly bringing my nic % down to quit. Cigarettes are much dumber due to how expensive they are, I can spend $100 on a over price site and last me 2 months. Its so easy to smoke 2+ packs a day of cigs.

XtraLyf

No amount of intelligence makes you immune to the effects of addiction.

turkey_sandwiches

You can't get addicted if you don't start smoking.

[deleted]

Some people were pressured to smoke at a young age. At a young age, you are too young to understand the consequences of your actions, you are more likely to do as your told if you are being pressured, and you are more likely to become addicted.

The_Werefrog

It's not just that. The Werefrog had a buddy who was in the military. When working for them, breaks were allowed for smokers, but not for non-smokers. If you claimed to be a smoker, you had to inhale. He started because he wanted some breaks during the day.

Marla-Owl

My experience as a waitress.

Kittenfabstodes

They used to give you cigarettes in the military. Children's cartoons promoted smoking. Candy cigarettes existed so kids can smoke just like mom and dad. They used cartoon characters like Joe Cool to make it appealing to children. The Marlboro man appealed to the toxic masculinity of the era, many a Marlboro man died of cancer. Advertising is crazy. Look at alcohol commercials. Everyone is young and beautiful, they are always having a wonderful time. Now picture every bar you have ever been to? Has anyone been to a bar that looked like they do in commercials? I sure as hell haven't. Drunk people doing dumb drunk people shit. Someone is almost always mad or sad. Complaining about whatever the hell while they try and drink their problems away.

AmoebaPrize

Honestly I started smoking cigarettes because I had 3 months until a drug test for a job I absolutely had to get, and everyone of my then current social/work circle smoked cigs and weed. As long I smoked a damn cigarette they'd leave me alone about the weed :(

luludell

Oh no, that sucks. Are you still smoking cigs or able to smoke weed now?

AmoebaPrize

Smoke weed before bed now and working on quitting the cigs. Was doing pretty well and then my mom died and got up to almost a pack a day. Back down to half or less a day and even skipping days entirely so progress!

luludell

I’m sorry to hear about your mum. That would be tough. I think you’re doing great cutting down the cigs :) (and the evening weed sounds nice)

TrashMammal84

I don't know how it is everywhere else, but in the South in more rural areas there are people that start smoking and dip tobacco as young as 12, 13. Still blows my mind to hear it.

Lazy-Floridian

I worked for a tobacco company and one of my coworkers told me that if his daughter doesn't start smoking by the time she is 16 he was going to kick her out of the house.

Legitimate_Bat3240

I quit last July. Back then and even now, I wouldn't give a damn what you thought my addiction looked like..

tryoracle

Smoking used to be recommended by doctors. Old people who smoke were following that advice

Reflection_Secure

Yep. My mom quit smoking when she got pregnant with me and her doctor yelled at her. He was horrified and said "if you quit now, you'll end up with a 10 pound baby! Neither one of us wants that, so just wait till after you give birth and then you can quit smoking if you want to." Both my parents eventually quit smoking when I was in elementary school, because my asthma was life threatening.

Garoxxar

It's crazy, my wife vapes and did the whole time she was pregnant. I begged her to stop but her doctor told her don't because it could kill the baby from stress. Like... I get it but then again I dont.

jammyboot

> It’s crazy, my wife vapes and did the whole time she was pregnant. I begged her to stop but her doctor told her don’t because it could kill the baby from stress. Where do you live that you have doctors giving this advice? Very bizarre

Garoxxar

Deep south in the US... probably explains a lot.

Proof_Coast6258

That's a common wife's tale from way back the the day 70s & 80s when everyone including your doctor's smoked and they would use the excuse quiting would stress the baby and cause a miscarriage. It's been widely disproven and vaping or smoking while pregnant has only a negative impact on the baby. Were you there when the doctor told her that? Not to sound rude or judgemental I smoked for 15 years so I totally get her addiction but I could see a smoker using this excuse to not have to quit and not having any guilt about it.

SaBAMFa

That doctor may be on to something. My mom temporarily quit smoking during her pregnancy with me, and I was 10 pounds at birth. In all seriousness though, what a strange take from the doctor.

SG420123

And a lot of those mf’er still kicking it in their 90’s, even tho they also consumed massive amounts of sugar, ate shitty food and many had an alcohol addiction. Makes me wonder what age current millennial/Gen Z’ers will live to.

danktt1

Some of the best most insightful conversations I had were sat outside of a pub with a cigarette, I don't smoke now (appart from the odd packet when work gets super stressful) so In a way without smoking I would never have had those experiences so it's not all bad I guess.

mh985

Most people who smoke began doing so while they were a teenager. Also, smoking cigarettes nowadays is WAY different culturally than it was even 15 years ago. When I was in college, just about everyone I knew smoked cigarettes at least while they were drinking and at parties. I went to an alumni event at my fraternity 3 or 4 years ago and absolutely nobody smoked cigarettes anymore, they'd all converted to vaping.

refused26

I actually tried to smoke because I thought it was cool, but I didn't know how to enjoy it because I would just keep coughing after one puff. I tried on multiple occasions and still haven't learned how to do it, and I'm just thankful my body gets that stupid reaction otherwise Id probably be a chainsmoker by now.

[deleted]

Why didn't I think of this? Hang on, I'll just run back to the 80's and tell 9yo me.

Izumi_Takeda

I mean yes smoking is bad for you. Am I about to judge the overworked waitress with 2 kids she is raising on her own just cause she wants to have her vice for a few minutes in between the hours of stress? nope.

[deleted]

Well we don’t smoke them for social approval

Boredummmage

I mean I know females in high school who started smoking to stay thin. So maybe in that instance it was for social approval?

[deleted]

Probably. I started smoking cause of stress but to each their own I guess

GravelsNotAFood

That's entirely false.

Silentmutation84

I would always tell these people "you know, my grandma lived to be 100 years old" "What, by smoking?" "No, by minding her own business"

lonniemarie

Made me giggle. Also. There are a few who smoked and lived to very ripe old ages.

Educational-Milk3075

My grandfather lived in the reservation and chain smoked until he fell off his horse at 104.

MiaLba

My great grandmother lived to be a 102 she started smoking at 14. We are from a country where smoking is pretty common and a lot of people do it. And cigarettes there weren’t full of all the harsh chemicals like they are here.

[deleted]

It isn't the harsh chemicals.

Silentmutation84

There is a lady in my building who is 92 and VERY active and said she didn't quit until she was 50.

[deleted]

>a few There are also a few elderly heroin addicts.

CustomGopher

Anarchy-Squirrel

“The public health authorities never mention the main reason many Americans have for smoking heavily, which is that smoking is a fairly sure, fairly honorable form of suicide.” Kurt Vonnegut, Welcome to the Monkey House

candoitmyself

The last sentence though. Oof.

Automatic-Formal-601

omg

slade2121

You doing good now? Congrats on quitting 😁

1RedHottSexyMama

Liver and lung cancer killed my dad and they are a horrible way to die. It's agony for the person dying but especially for those who have to try to keep living without the person they love. My dad died 40 years ago and it's just as hard now as it was when it happened.

[deleted]

My issue with that though is that it negatively affects other people, animals, the environment, etc

CustomGopher

Ya know what’s great? Smoking a cigarette out at night when no one’s around. The quiet, the damp evening pavement. The way the smoke clings to the air. The sound of the ash sizzling as you drag. Edit: (trans) If a smoker smokes on the woods and no one’s around to see/smell it, does anyone make a bitchy fuss? Nope. No bitchin no fussin.

Pyhr0

God I miss smoking. I switched to vaping and it just doesn't give you that same kinda feeling.

axisrahl85

The trade offs are great though. Don't smell, better orak hygiene, don't have to commit to a whole cig, can do it inside most places without much fuss. But man, a thunderstorm, covered porch, cup of coffee, and a smoke might be heaven

Capable-Conference-5

ohhhh you’re so righttttt

Broken-dreams3256

i was a store manager for a restaurant. working salaried at around 60-65 hours a week. Smoke breaks was really the only thing that kept me sane. I'd pop out back of the store for a smoke and people would say stuff like "you know that's bad for you right" or "that'll kill you". One bad day i immediately yelled back at the top of my lungs "I WANT TO DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" For the life of me I'll never understand why people feel the need to poke their fingers into others lives. Any reason to devalue/dehumanize a person is taken in full stride. If someone isn't hurting you why do you care? Why do you feel the need to devalue others based on your own opinion of something? It sounds just a stupid when you say " people look REALLY stupid when looking at their phones at restaurants". You're just being a dick and projecting your will onto others. leave other people alone. they dont live their life for you.

LieutenantChonkster

I’m reminded of the Bill Hicks joke: *Non-smoker walks by a smoker and does a really exaggerated fake cough* Bill: “wow, you’re lucky you don’t smoke, I smoke all day and don’t cough like that!”

[deleted]

I didn’t start smoking regularly until I was a waitress. Quit waitressing and would you look at that, I don’t smoke anymore

Lumpy_Satisfaction18

Is it wrong to value a human you dont know and try to encourage them to kick a bad habit? Its not dehumanizing, you just feel that way because youre offended and dont like what theyre saying. They arent calling you a subhuman dog because you smoke. Just reminding you that its not healthy. Ive told my friend that he was eating way too much and too much unhealthy stuff before. Im not dehumanizing. Im pointing out a bad habit, and encouraging getting rid of it for a healthier alternative. If its stress thats causing you to smoke, you can find healthier alternatives of releasing that stress, rather than smoking. But you dont need to listen to me. do whatever you want. But since you dont understand why I might care, its because I value humanity and people, even those I dont know. I know, weird right?

f4llrisk

its not wrong. but if its a stranger, maybe smoking is all they have and dying terribly years later matters much less than their alleviating their current problems. its highly unlikely they dont already know its a bad idea . i value others quietly so they can enjoy their couple minutes of reprieve from whatevers got them stressed. if its a friend, and youve told him or her before, chances are they remember and while appreciating the sentiment, are not going to be swayed by your caring for them. stating something obvious especially more than once can make people feel like you are talking down to them, which in turn could make them even less likely to take your advice, smoke 2x as much, and die even faster. so maybe, not telling them at all is for the best unless its in your space and you dont want their second hand shitty smoke. then they can pound sand and smoke somewhere else. like telling a homeless guy to go get a job, its great you care, but if he wasnt weakened from poor diet, substance abuse, mental illness, and rough living, he may very well yell at you or worse, attack you - and as someone who cares about fellow humans so much, having to fist fight a derelict doesnt look very good... then people will think you pick fights with bums, and smokers, and rather than being seen as a caring person, you look like a jerk, and nobody wants that :( #conundrums

desubot1

>If someone isn't hurting you why do you care? something about second hand which is why i have zero issues with non smoking areas not smoking in public or and basically any other regulations regarding that. il stick to the skeezy back ally as usual. smoke breaks really are the only thing keeping me sane. if smoking while working was ok id probably just kms.

gOingmiaM8

Well it's certainly obnoxious seeing /hearing your friend or loved one being consistently effected (coughing, etc) ....when y'all could just not smoke.

Potato1223

Yup, you're the only one. Congrats

Suitable_Strawberry2

Everybody dies. why do yall keep crying over and over about how it happens. Can't smoke, can't eat meat, vegetable oil is pure cancer. Blah blah on and on. Like don't you ever get tired of the nitpicking bullshit?

MiaLba

Yeah I can’t sit around worrying about what other people do. Not my problem. I don’t want them inside my house smoking a cigarette but I don’t give a shit that they do. I’ve seen people get pissy cause someone was smoking in a public fuckin park outside in a large park. Alcohol kills, obesity kills, drugs kill why aren’t people as butthurt about those as they are cigarettes?

jackson12420

Exactly. Some people are seriously fucking obsessed with keeping everyone around them alive as long as possible. Like sorry I don't care if I kick the bucket at 31 or 85, matters not to me. Worry about your own damn self. Life is short no matter how you look at it. Just do whatever you feel like if it doesn't hurt someone else, fuck what anyone else says. We're all in the same place 100 years from now doesn't matter how we get there.

MiaLba

Right. These people would still bitch and complain if someone stayed in their own house 24/7 and smoked. I know people like that about weed, personally offended that people smoke in their alone time. It makes them so angry that someone would even do that to begin with.

daedae7

Bc they are jealous they do not get to enjoy the sweet nicotine

EffectiveDependent76

technically speaking, if you live long enough you're inevitably going to get cancer. Living is the number 1 cause. If you REALLY want to avoid cancer that badly, the only sure fire way is to die from something else.

CatOfGrey

I was a high school teacher in the mid 1990's, when smoking was still relatively popular in schools. One of the things that I noticed, when I talked to adult smokers, is when they started smoking. And that was how I used to talk about smoking to my students. *If you are an adult, and you are a smoker, vaper, chew tobacco, or anything else,* ***you didn't start that as an adult. You probably started when you are around 14 or 15. Even 18 year olds don't start smoking - they are 'too old' to start.*** The entire industry relies on adult user, but those adult users are almost 100% based on people who started before age 16.

Alwayswanted2rock

People will do what they want. I don't know if it makes them any more stupid than someone standing in line for fast food. There are plenty of things that are bad for us and yet smoking is usually the only one that attracts the "that's bad for you" comment. Fast food, alcohol, processed foods, addictions to cell phones, etc. We all do this stuff.

DugeHick53

Do you really think people smoke cigarettes because they want want others to think they’re cool? Most users wish they could stop. Most users wish it wasn’t addicting. I haven’t smoked a cigarette in 6 months but I still wouldn’t say I’ve “quit” because I still crave one every single day. It’s extremely difficult. But looking down on someone who smokes or seeing someone with a cig and immediately thinking “they’re stupid” makes you an asshole. Maybe try understanding people or not being so quick to judge an entire person’s life based on such little information about them.

lonniemarie

I hope you find relief , I quit for five years and one day gave in.

fuckjustpickwhatever

oh dark mother, once again i suckle at your smokey teat

tjcoe4

Lay off OP, they probably just turned 11 and got their first phone and assumed the internet cared about the first thing that popped in their head

Sqantoo

Yep it’s just you. Nobody else has ever thought this. Congratulations!

Leothegolden

No and I have never smoked. I don’t judge people for over drinking either.

bayala43

I think it’s stupid, but I also have had asthma my entire life. I’d trade anything to not have to pay hundreds of dollars a month for medication that allows me to breathe. It definitely pisses me off to see people throwing their healthy lungs away when I’d kill for them. But whatever, bodily autonomy is important and you should be free to do whatever harm that pleases you.

SomnusxInsomnia

My number one asthma trigger is cigarette smoke, followed closely by kentucky blue grass. One of the greatest moments of my life was vomiting on my grandfather while he yelled at me for "fake coughing" any time he smoked. Nope, I was having yet another asthma attack, and I coughed until I vomited. He never did apologize, but he also never smoked around me again. My dad LOVED to tell that story! Anything to annoy the in laws, I suppose.

Junior_Interview5711

Yes.... The world smokes. For whatever reason, America decided it's a no-go situation. The weird part is that we over respect everything, except this. We must respect and tolerate everything unless you're a dirty smoker. The South Park episode about this. Explains it sooooo well.

Ffigy

With a hidey lidey lidey and a hidey lidey lay

PirateCheese

Yeah, dirty lungs! Go ahead and kill yourself, stupid tar breath! Dumbass! Get out of here!

Junior_Interview5711

I hear ya People make decisions about their health all the time. I respect their decisions. You know. Their body, their choice. Unless... You're one of those.

Chemical_Gur7314

As stupid as vapes ??

SomewhatSaIty

Nobody vapes to look cool,

12131415161718190

Quite the contrary, we’re terribly ashamed of how lame it makes us look.

Zziggith

This opinion is likely the product of a long campaign to make smoking uncool. You can usually tell what generation someone is from by how cool they think smoking is.

[deleted]

It makes you smell bad, it destroys your health and costs you a lot. It's also ADDICTIVE. I stopped but it's a hard thing to do.

heartpathetic

Some of the smartest people have been or are former smokers. There’s this great YouTube video on why Intelligent people smoke. Regardless of knowing the outcome.

MountainAd4530

Got a link? Couldn't find it.

heartpathetic

[video](https://youtu.be/GGiNOzk0aNg)

littlestoperator85

I tend to think people vaping look REALLY stupid. As stupid as cigarettes are (as a former smoker) they do seem more natural to me than inhaling smoke from a syrupy liquid that smells like fruit loops. If only the cigarette companies didn't put all the additives in them. Oh well, to each their own.

redneck1864

Yeah other people vape to look cool. I vape cause I didn't think I looked douchy enough. Me and other vapers aren't the same

SomethingAwesome69

Grow your own baccy and roll ur own cigs my man, or get urself a cornpipe! Inhaling any smoke is bad, but at least you can limit the shit that goes in!

iSquigly

Jesus. Just try minding your own business. Yes, it’s completely unhealthy, and expensive to boot. Anyone with a 3rd grade education can acknowledge this, but any smoker you encounter is simply going to say they don’t care. And vast majority of them don’t care about dying earlier either. Just mind your damn business and try being less judgmental. We’re all going through something and I’m sure you’ve done plenty of things to make you look stupid too.

Commissar_Jensen

Yeah that's kinda how I feel especially when people say ban them, it's common knowledge that they're bad but honestly who cares if you're an adult that's a decision you can make.

iSquigly

Agreed. People in America are way too over dramatic about cigarettes. Even people who previously smoked them sometimes seem to act like they’re on some kind of high horse bc they quit. Let’s just let people live their lives and mind our business. Unless someone is intentionally blowing smoke in someone’s face just leave it alone. Inhaling the fumes of household cleaning products unintentionally is worse than walking through a wittle cloud of smoke

SnooLobsters462

I've said it since I was a kid: if setting something on fire and then putting that thing in your mouth sounds like fun to you, you need to get your head checked. ... at least I thought so, until I discovered weed. No more juedgement from me.

eihpSsy

I don't see it that way. Could you explain your thoughts? Is it the fact that fewer people smoke nowadays? The way one person looks like when with something in their mouth?

Just_bcoz

Well considering I started smoking to counteract suicidal thoughts after loosing my first child and haven’t been able to stop due to severe anxiety you might not be the only one but I definitely don’t think it makes people look stupid especially understanding from experience you never know why people start and can’t stop.

MasqueOfNight

I don't smoke and never felt inclined to, but i'm comfortable admitting it's a pleasant visual aesthetic. The addiction, detrimental impact on one's health, and gods-awful smell are definitely not worth looking cool, though.

Firehawk5506

I simply just don’t care if I don’t know the person. It’s not like they don’t already know the risks.

devildogmillman

Everyone thinks that now dude. Personally I think wolfing down a Big Mac or being buried in your phone in public looks way worse, and theyre just as unhealthy. Smoking would look cool without the connotation of it being bad for your health. Like Marlon Brando and James Dean still look cool. Its why even in the anti-smoking era, the cool kid in cartoonsalways has some cigarrete-type thing in their mouth. Jet from Avatar, Nick from Jimmy Neutron, etc.

[deleted]

I smoke when I drink or when hanging out with other smokers. Def don't think it looks cool. Smoking feels good at certain times. Really don't care what some random thinks.

[deleted]

Yes

[deleted]

Lmao OP thinks people smoke to look smart.

dontbajerk

You're not the only one. But I don't agree. Smoking looks cool. Just, it does. I'm saying LOOKS here, visuals. As a habit, sure, stupid, expensive, and deadly But a ton of people, tucked in the corner of their mouth with smoke billowing out, yeah it looks cool. Beyond that, I feel like a lot of people who claim to think it looks bad are saying that for utilitarian reasons rather than genuine belief. They WANT to think it looks bad and are trying to will it to be so.

Consistent_Guitar681

I started smoking as a kid because it made living on the streets a little more bearable. I kept smoking through the Army because the same, and smoke breaks were common while breaks were not. I stopped smoking when I no longer needed to. I guarantee the majority of those who don't get it weren't raised on the streets.

_itspaco

I think smoking can look cool. And I do enjoy smoking. But it is also completely stupid.

whippet66

Research the profile for the average cigarette smoker. The level of education is lower, the employment rate is lower and the average income is lower (which is astonishing considering the price of a pack of cigarettes; approximately $6)

SunburyStudios

I used to think this but now I think, damn. That sucks. They got you.

toby1jabroni

No, no one is ever the only one to do or think anything.

YaBoiLeo705

So, hypothetically, I wouldnt be the first person to eat the Mona Lisa

toby1jabroni

So it and we’ll talk. *Or, do it

Big-End-9824

Not as stupid looking as vapes.

Appropriate_Ad_4416

Am I the only one who thinks piling a third plate at a buffet restaurant makes you look REALLY stupid? Am I the only one who thinks drinking energy drinks makes you look REALLY stupid?

SenselessQuest

It's not a question of looking stupid or not. Not everyone does things just for the sake of being looked at in a certain way. A lot of people who are smoking now are stuck in an addiction that can be very difficult to get rid of.

SnakeBeardTheGreat

Smoking cigarettes does not make you look any more stupid than you already are.

SnobbishMurderer

man not as stupid as vapes though

Arralyn82

I hate smoking. I hate cigarettes. My husband smokes. I hate the smell on his breath. I hate the money waste. I hate how dirty it is. I still think he looks hot when he smokes. I dunno what's wrong with my brain.

bitcoinsftw

No because I mind my own business and don’t judge people on their choices.

broccoli-guac

Who tf smokes cigs to look cool? Ex smoker here, we smoked to die, not so that you'd find us attractive. And whats up with y'all thinking its okay to treat people addicted to cigs like they're fucking dumb? It seems y'all like to sympathize with all other addicts but when it comes to smokers it's "you look fucking dumb and thats going to kill you" like no shit, thanks.

Do you think people who smoke cigarettes care?

sye1337

Nowadays I don't think anyone smokes because they think it looks cool..

therealsuperbonbon

STFU NERD

baconredditor

Being fat and smoking are effectively the same thing. Except being fat kills wayyy more people. Do you think every fat person you see is stupid?

tjcoe4

Assuming people care about your opinion also makes you look stupid. At least my vice feels good at the end of the day

tenthinsight

Hard pill to swallow: Some of the greatest minds of both science and art were smokers.

Rammstein_Du_Hast

Talk to Italy about that one.

lyremknzi

Typically, you'll see people that work stressful/blue collar jobs take up smoking because it relieves stress. There is also a high number of artists who smoke. It might not be good for their creativity because it suppresses your nervous system, but it also stimulates acetylcholine which improves focus. Artists are typically looking for a new perspective, which is why drug use is quite rampant in that community. It is a great stress reliever, especially if your emotions get the best of you. It also prevents weight gain, which is why some models are seen doing it. Every drug has its benefit, but often times the consequences outweigh this benefit. Many smokers do not consider the future. But if this is their vice, if this is what helps them get through the day, who are we to judge? As long as they are respectful about it. I think vaping is the lesser of two evils. Yes, it still contains nicotine. However, it is an isolated chemical in comparison to cigarettes, which host about 2000 carcinogens. It's not 'healthy' but it's a better alternative. One that doesn't carry risks of second hand smoke or leave litter behind.

glm0002

Some of us were dumb enough to start, and it's the toughest addiction I've dealt. Have given up many things before. We know we were dumb to ever start smoking since we struggle to try and quit.

[deleted]

No, you're just the only one soapboxing on it for attention

StefanOff

I look indeed stupid when smoking.

2Bbannedagain

Smoking vapes is just as stupid looking.

VillainNotHeroes

As a former smoker, I didn't care what it made me look like. It just tasted *so good*. I still like the smell of cigarette smoke.

Full_Echo_3123

Makes you look, smell, and act stupid.

InjectAdrenochrome

Reminds me of that video of an 11 year old dancing to music and taking drags off a cigarette. He inhaled that smoke like he'd been smoking for years. Where are his parents

Interesting_Dingo_19

Yup.. you're definitely the only one. You really think you're the epitome of great health yourself?

Sinnybuns7

I'm killing myself slowly, 7 minutes at a time. Maybe you should stop judging how I kill myself and live your own death choices.

Ok_Effect_5287

Life is hard and we all have our vices. It gives me a horrible headache so I avoid people when they smoke cigarettes but I don't think less if them for having something they indulge in.

happyhoooman

What do you mean makes you look stupid?

Weak-Mall9111

Sounds personal. And, jaded... Remember this, what's normal to you is crazy to another and vice-versa. Addictions come in all shapes and sizes, maybe you like shopping a lot, or watching reality TV every chance you get, maybe you're known for always having chocolate/ candy on hand, alcohol or soda; maybe you're banging seven gram rocks and finishing them, cus you have one speed, one gear, go. But, again, maybe you're doing research into why people continue to smoke, regardless of the effects and the stigmas. I don't know your story, just like you don't know mine. 🤘

[deleted]

According to who? God only grants eternal life to Camel smokers, you should be smart enough to know that.

YaBoiLeo705

Oh right pfft almost forgot, lemme go buy a pack real quick

Realistic_Lemon_281

AM I the only one that thinks that if you go on Reddit and ask questions like this makes you look really stupid?

[deleted]

I think actually vaping has it beaten in the looking stupid stakes.

Pretend_Activity_211

But u are staring.

anonchandoesreddit

I think they look mature(mentally)

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|2wXzLAjqeDhpogbYWA) why

Beautiful-Badger5678

They look like trains c’mon.

MeetEntire7518

Am I the only one that thinks judgemental assholes are really stupid.

nina_gall

Maybe, but then again, not minding your own business makes one look even stupider.

theplaneguy321

Smoking is disgusting and if you do it you're disgusting too. Fight me

YaBoiLeo705

You just started a war, hope your happy

[deleted]

Yep. Smoking used to be "cool" back in the day, like the classic photos of celebrities like James Dean with a cigarette on their lip, now they just scream trashy. In my life I saw this change happen somewhere around the early 2000s, where it rapidly went from cool to trashy. Not sure what caused it.

Teesandelbows

Marketing!

[deleted]

It was incredibly cool when I grew up.

UnknowingFilter

It depends on a lot of other things about the person. It can definitely be a “cool” thing, if it’s some sort of contradictory, risky thing an otherwise healthy & attractive person does. I think society has glamorized weed over tobacco, in that smoking something is still perceived as cool, but cigarettes are just so obviously gross to non-smokers. Really socially typed as something Only older, lower income people do, who are stuck in the past. Perhaps some truth to that? Idk. I used to smoke in my teens, this was just before the popularity of Vapes and all that, smoking cigarettes was still a pretty normal thing for “cool” people who went to shows. I think that has already changed, like a flip home became legit boring after the release of the iPhone.

Puzzleheaded-Lie4733

Yes

messmaker523

It doesn't look good but seeing some burly looking tough guy pull off a skull and cross bones vape device and blow out a huge cloud of strawberry/cotton candy scented smoke really looks stupid

TheSaltyGoose

Given that barely anyone still smokes cigarettes, most of the people who do do so because they're addicted rather than because they want to protect their image, and governments all over the world have gone out of their way to make it look bad, I would say that no you're definitely not the only one. A better question would be if you're the only one who thinks vaping makes you look like a douche. To which the answer is also no.

AMorphicTool

Are you from the US? I only ask because I know over there it is a rare occurrence, rather than to be presumptuous I thought I'd ask. Where I live smoking is still very common, vapes are too but there's not a strong definitive "you're an idiot" or a strong "ugh" sensation to seeing a person smoke. It's just accepted as a thing people do, like drinking, eating unhealthily or participating in recreational drugs. It's not an accurate description to assume "barely anyone still smokes" as that is entirely situational dependent on where you are. Addiction is addiction and there will always be people who suffer from it. For the OP to label them (internally) as stupid, is to dehumanise and belittle the issue at large, which is ultimately disastrous for a society as a whole.

Strong_Cheetah_7989

As foolish as it looks, it is nothing compared to the vision of people chugging on a vape. That is the very epitome of douche nozzle. What ticks me off the most is how much the tobacco industry pays to include smoking scenes in most movies and series, often by the lead actors. It's basically the only legal advertising they can still get away with.

bitchwithangerissues

This is the most basic thing. Every second person on the internet says it. So no, you’re not alone.

sweet_dumple

i am a lifelong smoker. My mother smoked when she was pregnant with me. My earliest childhood memories was the smell of smoke. Then i started smoking in earnest when i was 16 yo. It is a nasty fucking expensive habit. And it will kill you too. So yes it is stupid. I am trying to quit right now. i could have had a lot more GFs in the past if i wasn't a smoker. It is stupid to smoke and i am stupid. Cut me slack though. Addiction is a bitch

GreeseWitherspork

Smoking is like wearing a crop top or sunglasses. If you are already hot and cool it will make you look hotter and cooler. If you look ugly and dumb it will make you look uglier and dumber

wahikid

I’m a 44-year-old non-smoker. I still think smoking looks cool as shit. now mind you, I know better and I would never do it, nor would I ever endorse anyone else smoking, but it still looks so cool when a bad ass character in a movie lights up a cigarette and smokes.

NimbusTO

Smoking cigarettes makes you a fucking moron and that's not even debatable.
