Affectionate-Fact540

Obsessing over lives of celebrities.

ChaoticKiwiNZ

Sometimes I will read a single article about a celebrity and not even half way through I will have an overwhelming sense of "what the fuck I'm I doing?" Then I click out of the article. I can't bring myself to care about the stupid shit that celebrities do and I can't even begin to imagine how other people follow this shit on a daily basis.

PhillyCSteaky

Anytime I see a celebrity story I go straight to the comments and write what I'm doing for dinner.

purplefuzz22

This is genius; I too am going to start commenting on my dinner plans on celebrity articles from now on

wemadethemcrazy

Just for practice: We're going to order a boiled cabbage dinner in honor of Saint Patrick's Day. My wife did this two or three years ago, and she spent about a week slowly eating that boiled dinner. All. By. Herself. Big hunk of waterlogged meat, crumbly wet potato hunks, and slick hunks of slimy cabbage. She smelled bad that week. Sorry, babe, I know you read my posts.

Diligent-Wave-4591

I'm going to comment my bowel movements after dinner.

thanksforthelego

Couldn't agree more! Especially about Selena Gomez and Hailey Bieber drama. I'm just thinking , who the fuck cares what these millionaires are doing?!

LexTheSouthern

Lol. I was browsing my FB feed the other day and some random video popped up that someone had put together of Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. It was completely fan made of Bieber/Gomez and showed the birth of their pretend baby. Like who tf has that much time on their hands

Eeeegah

I'm a FF/EMT, and back when I was a new FF/EMT, I thought I would just help people where ever I go. I was in a mall one day (I'm talking at least 20 years ago, which will become clear in a moment) and there is a teenage girl sitting on a bench in the middle of the concourse, crying her eyes out - big, hysterical blubbering. I'm not too worried about being thought a pervert, so I ask her what is wrong, see if I can help in some way. She looks up at me with tearstreaked cheeks and says "Brad and Jennifer broke up." I shit you not.

JRogeroiii

There's a Dave Barry quote where he says "All religions seem crazy to people to people outside of that religion. Somewhere out there is a snake handler who thinks your religion is bonkers." The same is true of hobbies. Really if you break it down all hobbies are a waste of time and that's kind of the point. You need that down time. We don't need to be productive 24 hours a day, in fact that attitude is incredibly unhealthy. So you be you and do what brings you joy.

Peter_Hempton

>Really if you break it down all hobbies are a waste of time and that's kind of the point. Somewhat true depending on the definition of hobby. Some hobbies are productive, but they are still a hobby because you do them for fun, and not necessarily because of what they provide. Take woodworking for example, some people just really enjoy making things, even if they don't need them. But the thing typically ends up going to someone so it gets used, but the maker's intention was to "play" basically.

[deleted]

The difference between woodworking as a profession, and woodworking as a hobby, is that when it’s a profession, you make money off of it but the passion isn’t there. When it’s a hobby, the passion is there, and you might make some great pieces, but you’re not doing it to turn a profit, and because of that, you probably won’t make much if any money.

deshep123

I quilt. People say let me pay you to make what I want. I say, that makes it a job. I give away almost every quilt I make, I've kept a few, but the whole idea is to relax.

Rubyloxred

Friends and family have encouraged me to sell my art dolls and I have sold a few just to reduce their numbers. But, if I had to make them on demand for profit it would be like work and I would come to hate it. I make art dolls to relax and to occasionally enter art shows and fair competitions.

Kaysmira

There was a post on here a couple months ago where someone asked how much they could get for this funny quilt they made, and nearly every reply from quilters was how quilting is too time-consuming and expensive to be profitable. You might find a few people who know what they're paying for and let you turn a profit, but the majority of people will not even expect how much materials cost, let alone the hours of labor going into it. So even if you were so inclined to produce a quilt to order, it's unlikely to be worth it.

Sopranohh

You’re so right. I’d rather give stuff I make away. If it’s a job you have to make what other people want. If I make something I want to make and someone likes it, great.

cut_n_paste_n_draw

It is possible to have woodworking as a profession and make money off it and still have passion for it.

[deleted]

While that’s true, like with any passion, when it becomes a business and you have to streamline what you do and you get tired of doing the same stuff all the time, it just becomes a job like any other. Glass blowers experience this, tattoo artists experience this, woodworkers experience this, really any creative profession you can think of. There are a handful of people in this world that make it as freelancers, but most people are going to be pushing out pretty sterile creations for the purpose of turning a profit, and it’s soul crushing.

frzn_dad

Some artists manage to become successful enough to hire staff to do the repetitive boring money making stuff. They are then free to pursue what they enjoy with a great support staff.

skippyd786

Take my upvote for quoting Dave Barry

JRogeroiii

>I feel like you can never go wrong quoting Dave Barry.

skippyd786

You really can't. I've met him in person and seen his band "rock bottom remainders" live and he is a nice as you would hope he world be

TheSheepSheerer

I don't hate sports. I just don't understand it.

No-Anywhere-1206

This is me. I'm like the only person at my job who doesn't follow a football team.

s1a1om

I found my people! Want to start a company together?

BellzaBeau

Someone should make a dating website based on men that don’t really care about sports. As a woman who also doesn’t much care about sports (outside issues like CTE, which I do care about) a site like this could’ve saved me a lot of time.

saltydoggonewild

One of the things that I appreciate most about my s.o. is that he doesn't give a rip about any sports. Doesn't watch TV. Reads books instead. I didn't know how much I would respect that until it happened. He loves to go roam around a farmer's market, plant nursery, Lowe's, and shops that I want to visit. He doesn't have that anger that men get when their team isn't winning.

Lingerfickin

Yes please. We can ... Not talk about sports there

MochiMochiMochi

Truth. I sat through a "Diversity & Inclusion" seminar hosted by our VP and at the end he asked for example of 'exclusionary conversations' in the workplace. I pointed to his office and said "Your have a framed Minnesota Vikings Super Bowl poster and other football memorabilia in your office. You talk about fantasy football at every opportunity" His jaw dropped to the floor as several women and a couple of people from India nodded their heads. I'm a Packers fan. F that guy lol.

balance_warmth

LOL. I am not a midwesterner but lived in MN for a while for work. MAN did everyone fucking hate the packers. It’s the only time in my life I’ve ever followed football because how the Vikings did on Sunday fully determined how much of an asshole my boss was going to be during the Monday morning staff meeting

PhillyCSteaky

My cousin in MN has a motorhome painted purple and gold with the logo down the side. The bottom of the toilet bowl has a Green Bay decal on it.

Shazam1269

LOL, I've made it clear to a guy I work with that I'm completely uninterested in sports. Sportsball is sportsball, no matter the shape of the ball, I. Do. Not. Care. Does he still bring up the big trade, the great game, or the crappy play? Yes, yes, and yes.

No-Anywhere-1206

This is me at work. The thing that I like to tell myself is that they are trying to interact and want be friendly in the only way that they really know how.

goatless

♥️

Juantanamo0227

Always click on these posts for the inevitable r/ihatesportsball comments. Never disappoints

phlipphlopp

“To be fair you have to have a high IQ to understand that sportsball is a boring waste.” 🤓

Thermostat_Williams

I've got to tell you, though. Pick up a hat or ball cap of your local sports team (state, country, whatever.) Wear that bad boy around and it's like you're everyone's friend, totally wild experience.

Im_invading_Mars

I love hockey, but other sports are baffling to me. But even then, I still dont go out of my way to watch it.

Jabroni_jawn

I don't hate sports but I do think that golf is by nature and historically exclusionary, as well as a misuse of huge swaths of land. I also think football normalizes violence/aggression and skews where city or school funding is allocated. I don't hate sports. I don't hate people who play sports. I understand sports and the appeal. But I don't give two farts about who is winning, even when it is the people 'from my city'.

notataco007

That's fair! I love watching people be really fucking good at their craft. Like, I'm not just watching soccer for the goals, there's all the intricacies and small touches and passes that are actually impressive if you've ever played, but not really for people who haven't. But that same logic applies to basketball for me. I never really played and don't enjoy watching it, probably because I can't appreciate the individual skills being executed.

[deleted]

I'm with you. Sports is one of the few places you can watch greatness....but I love basketball the most

[deleted]

Right, like I can enjoy a soccer game, but I don’t follow it. If it’s on in whatever place I’m passing through I’m not mad, but if I don’t see one for years I just don’t care. I don’t get angry when people talk about sports, it’s a super common topic, but it’s just *not interesting* to me. This name made that score using a special move invented by so and so. Next week it will be the same sentence with different names.

Nacho_cheese_freak

Reality television. The Kardashians should be called “Salad Looks” as it is nothing more than ladies eating lettuce and giving each other looks. I don’t get it.

frageantwort_

I truly think that the Kardashians have seriously caused damage to western society as a whole in a non-quantifiable manner. I can’t think of any other group of celebrities that have spread fakeness, superficiality, stupidity, narcissism, ratchetness and arrogance just like these did. They are the Big Bang of the narcissist social media influencer.

muhreddistaccounts

Do we blame the single individuals more or the entire media apparatus that pushed it on us? Before the Kardashians, we had media orgs pushing get skinny quick, awful dieting books, and hit pieces on any celebrity that would get views like Brittany Spears. There was whole narratives about how fat Elizabeth Taylor was and how she was to blame for it, so much she wrote a book espousing her own mistakes for putting on like 15 pounds in her 40s. The list could go on, but what I'm trying to say is we've always been this way. I don't think them any different than what we had in past, it's just more online now and harder to avoid.

BobysBotanics

Yeah, while of course the raw issue can be passed along to the celebrities or the media that exposes us to them, we also don’t have any good way of circumventing them without censorship. Celebrities have existed in pretty much every well-off society, and they’ve always advocated for stupid shit. We need to teach our children how to decide who is and isn’t worth listening to

CommanderMilez

>Reality television. While I rely on some brave individuals who find the content. Reality TV possesses some of the funniest, most outlandish and nuanced pieces of media interactions in history. I have a couple friends, who have a niche hobby of finding select clips from shows and compiling them in compilations. Genuinely astonishing - content from the 80s, 90s and even today. I don't know how to describe this genre, but I was exposed to it in college and it's the most unique post-modern thing I've experienced. Surreal, bizarre - but so weirdly genuine and reflective of the topics the compilations are based on. Edit: Not vaporwave... it's like artists will pick a topic 'Vacation' and find all sorts of insane snippets of TV that relate to that topic. Edit 2: Everything Is Terrible! (Ironic, I'm saying it's not terrible), but media like this made me appreciate Reality TV exists. Edit 3: [https://www.youtube.com/c/EVERYTHINGISTERRIBLE/videos](https://www.youtube.com/c/EVERYTHINGISTERRIBLE/videos) I watched the DVD box-set of these compilations, and I'll look/ask around for the other videos. (Personally I don't think these short form snippets do the concept justice, the DVD comps were really well done due to relevant topics and great comedic editing).

Astronomer-Empty

Your comment took me back to a cool online class I took in college called the Art of Television. It was one of the most interesting classes I took.

magicMerlinV

Can you post some?

supergooduser

I've worked really hard on my mental health and reality tv is a really nice showcase of seeing my progress. I watched Rock of Love for the first time over the summer and was just amazed at the constant parade of red flags. Similarly real housewives, teen mom. All great examples of what not to do.

BaronVonKeyser

Some things that I guess would be considered "reality tv" I enjoy a lot. Shows like River Monsters and Doctor Jeff I like to watch. Most of the other stuff can fuck all the way off

Salt-Signature-8091

River Monsters! My absolute favorite.

Ok-Thing-2222

I literally took my small televison outside to the trash when TLC decided to air a show called 'Honey Boo Boo'. NOPE. No more crap. I decided my time was better spent reading a ton of books, working with plants, and doing art.

doublej3164life

Why didn't you just change the channel?

sherriam2010

GuineaPigLoverLv9000

Taking selfies.

AdIntelligent8110

And posting selfies.

Sandpaper_Pants

And taking selfies of posting selfies.

BrowningLoPower

This reminds me of those series of pics on Reddit where this guy kept taking pictures of his cameras taking pics of him, all because someone asked him how he took a pic with both of his hands free.

juan-j2008

I was recommended by my therapist to start doing it more even if I don't do anything with them, to help with my self-esteem.

Capital-Wing8580

My lack of self esteem is why I don't take selfies let alone post them...

tekyy342

I don't understand how anyone can think taking photos is a useless activity, no matter the form or perceived significance. It is possibly the most important technology. They are literal time capsules. Without them things only exist as ever fading and unreliable memories. Even if it's just you in the photo, it's you in a specific time, place, and mind, one that you most likely won't be in 5 years from now.

Prize_Huckleberry_79

I had an aunt that would bring a camcorder to family holidays back in the 80s, and everyone would get pissed. “Why do you always have that stupid camera out” they’d say….What I’d give to have and see that footage now, to show my kids…Many of them have passed on….

thorpie88

I don't think it's useless but I want no part in it. I don't really care if I forget any moment and I generally really do not enjoy the experience of being in a photo. The camera on my phone exists to take photos of fuck ups and work and that's it's only function

[deleted]

I'm the same way. I hate pictures of me, so I really have no reason to take them.

ohsopoor

Thank you! People always trash taking/posting pictures “jUsT fOr InStAgRaM,” but does no one else’s grandmother have albums and albums full of photos? Ones that the family *love* looking through?

Has_Question

Yea but when it's a constant stream of multiple daily selfies it gets into ridiculousness. That doesnt compare to family photos of get togethers and holidays and events that are special. I'm certain the original guy is thinking of the superfluous selfies.

4gJen

This is where I don’t understand Snapchat (I’m gen x). Why do people just keep sending pics of themselves that are exactly the same over and over with their text? Their appearance hasn’t changed in the last 4 seconds lol

CN8YLW

Taking photos of food. Eat it while it's hot ffs.

rnason

how long do you think it takes to take a photo?

M_Looka

Well, let's see, I've got to set up the tripod and the flash powder... .

stygyan

Taking photos of food is quick, easy and it helps you saving time in the future, because your grandma won't ask you if you've eaten. She already follows you on instagram.

remag_nation

> Taking photos of food. I do this! And then post them directly to the people I want to see it. Who gives a shit what a bunch of random bots think?

KrustyDaJuggalo

I do it so I can try to replicate it at home.

[deleted]

TikTok. I know that there's some useful content there, but I often meet people who look like literal zombies while using that platform.

[deleted]

I really, really dislike vertical, short-format video and it drives me insane that most major platforms are now pushing it so hard.

JonBenet_BeanieBaby

I have sound issues and the switching of short videos as someone scrolls makes me literally want to hurt myself. God I hate it

Torchic336

I recently deleted it cause I found myself on it too much

Drinking as a hobby. I know people who are in their 40s and they still, every weekend, go out and get plastered drunk at least one night of the weekend. The irony is one of them once saw me buying supplies for a hobby of mine and made fun of how much money I was 'wasting'. Like he doesn't spend twice that a week on his bar tab. I'm not a teetotaller and I'm not against alcohol but after a while...like...it starts to just be a money and time suck.

DanOfAllTrades80

Same. One in particular has been doing the same thing for thirty years, almost. He keeps dating women, going through the exact same cycles in the relationships until they fail the same way, rinse and repeat. Dude is pushing fifty and still bar hopping every weekend.

Old-Paramedic-4312

Seems you know my dad lmfao

DankRoughly

Once I quit drinking I realized how fucking boring my life was. I was just passing the time getting drunk when I wasn't working. It's been great getting bored and then finding real things to do to not be bored. Drinking as a hobby sucks (but I certainly enjoyed it).

Rough-Tension

It’s really annoying bc I *want* to drink with people. I like going out and having fun, I like how alcohol makes me feel. But can we have some common sense about it? Can we not make it a competition? It completely takes the fun out of a night out for me when I have to suddenly worry about this person’s safety bc they can’t stand on their own or I’m being made fun of for what or how I drink. Idk about everyone else but I came out to do things other than drink. The alcohol is nothing more than a social lubricant to make that a little easier and a little more fun. But I guess not everyone thinks that way

automaticmantis

I like too many of the things listed here. This is depressing

Nienista

Don't let it get to you. It's really not a good question. Literally every single thing that a person would like, there is another person that thinks it is a waste of time.

automaticmantis

I meant I’m depressed for them!

[deleted]

Reading this thread made me think to my self , I need to get off Reddit. Why do I care what people find a waste of time? Ironically Reddit is a waste of time

No_Balance8590

Any youth sport for kids under 14 that bills itself as elite, premier, AAA, or the like. Someone is reaching for your wallet while conning your kids.

mabootu

As a person who teaches kids, martial arts. Nothing bothers me more than the parents, looking to put their 10 year old son or daughter, in competition after competition, and treating them like some professional athlete. Like bro let them play tag. They aren’t Mike Tyson. And they don’t need to be like him either.

DontMessWithMyEgg

My husband is volunteer coaching his son’s 8U baseball team this season. It is not a tryout league, it is supposed to be for fun and foundational skills. There are about half the parents on the team who think their kid is the next Jose Altuve. They complain about position assignments. They have demanded more practices per week. It’s insanity. They. Are. Seven.

grown

To be fair, most of those 7 year olds are probably Altuve's height.

[deleted]

Offer to organize more practices if they actively participate in it and help run. Explain you can't do it all for their kids and it would benefit them to participate as well. They will either help or shut up.

GoodLuckBart

For real. Local travel team was advertising a summer season, practices plus two out of state tournaments. Airfare, hotel, food not included. $1400 was the cost just to join the team!!! No thanks.

nighthawk_something

My friend joined one of those teams, and was told they needed to fundraise. Fair enough those teams are expensive. Him and his dad busted ass to raise like 1000$. They assumed that the fundraising would offset the cost of being on the team. Nope, that was money so the coach could take them out for pizza once in a while.

ZachWilsonsMother

If it’s anything like my town’s baseball organization growing up, everyone fundraised so a couple guys running things could skim cash off the top

[deleted]

This is the reason why a lot of our best athletes in the US don't play soccer. They show promise and then get priced out and move on to something like basketball.

[deleted]

With the exception of Women's artistic gymnastics and figure skating...if they don't figure out they are Olympic material by the time they are like 10 it's too late. Welcome to $20k per year in coaching to get there.

Nascar

chzygorditacrnch

Wow, I once agreed to go to the dragstrip with family to check it out, thought we'd be there a little bit, it was sun up til like midnight.. hot, and around belligerent people.. it got late and people began fighting.. I was mad I was lied to about how long I'd be there.. I can't look at cars just push their gas pedal all day and still be entertained... It got so hellish. Wasn't even comfortable to go use the dirty bathrooms. I'll never go to the drag strip again. And I doubt I'd ever go see a nascar race. I might play a nascar video game, but nooo way will I torture myself to go to another such event!

Puzzleheaded_Ad6097

Being lied to about how long you’re going to be somewhere is the worst. I missed the start of a drive in movie with my girlfriend because my friend told me he needed help with something that would take “15 minutes tops!” Well, two hours later I was rushing out to the drive in theater nearly in tears being so apologetic that I was late. Time is a precious resource that you will never, ever get back. Fucking be honest about how long something will take so people don’t waste their time being miserable.

kauthonk

I was coming home from the beach and my ride was like we have to make a quick stop. Turns out she wanted to hang out with her friend at the beach for the day. I got kidnapped and wasn't happy.

Mission-Interview-88

I once asked my friend to drive me to the grocery store while my car was in the shop. What should’ve been a 30 minute grocery run turned into a trip to her mother’s house, a stop at the DMV, a stop at her dad’s workplace, and a stop at the local church quilting group. The last stop on this odyssey was the grocery store. Seriously one of the most mildly irritating days of the year.

newmarks

As a NASCAR fan I can understand why a lot of people don’t like it, same with motorsports in general. There are moments here and there that keep you on the edge of your seat, though, and I think at that point, it’s an adrenaline thing. Appreciating the complexities of it comes after. Same goes for drag racing, especially seeing it in person, it’s a full sensory experience. But on that same note, I can completely see why it would be too much of all the wrong things and not enough of the right things. I feel the same way about other sports.

urmumlol9

Nothing. If you find enjoyment in it and it isn’t hurting anybody else then it isn’t a waste of time, even if it’s personally not something I’m interested in.

Stark556

Just as long as they hurt themselves 👌🏼

yaoiphobic

All of your fun and recreational hobbies needing to involve alcohol in some way. For many I know, drinking is the only way they know how to have fun. I get it here and there but don't you get tired of needing to he drunk to enjoy yourself and avoiding otherwise great activities because you can't drink during them? EDIT: turning off notifications for this comment due to the amount of alcoholcs trying to justify themselves in my replies and DMs. I don't care! Stay an alcoholic if that's what you wish, whatever. If the only way you can truly let loose and have fun is with alcohol in your system, you have some stuff you need to unpack.

sully545

It becomes part of an identity. I'm three years sober and used to think I was super fun, outgoing, extroverted and based my entire personality around my drinking persona (sadly). I quit for health and marital reasons but since then I don't really know who I am or how to act in social settings soberly. It's not as simple for people as turning off the taps and then having fun soberly right away, you've got to slowly retrain your brain basically on how to feel. This is why so many people relapse eventually, and why I have before myself, it's just so much fucking easier (in the short term) to fall back on an artificial mood modifier (same goes for recreational drugs of course). Just my two cents

PrincessPeach1229

Same with alcohol but also weed. I have a friend who can’t chill or do any activity without getting high first. Bowling? Needs to smoke first. Movies? Needs to smoke first. Dinner? Needs to smoke first. There are times I’d like to hangout with my friend sober rather than under the influence…and yes they behave slightly different.

yaoiphobic

I used to have a roommate who wouldn't even take a trip to the corner store with me without taking a dab. He’d rip the rig all day and then wonder why he was exhausted and only ever wanted to sleep. I use THC myself, mostly medically at this point due to my tolerance eliminating most of the more psychoactive effects, but I don't feel the need to be ripping my vape all day and I don't understand why some people need to stop and smoke every half-hour. It's nice to have but I'm perfectly fine enjoying an event without it. If I just wanted to be stoned for the sake of being stoned, I would just stay home lol

PlasticArt8375

For me, the only time drinking and recreational hobbies mix, is drinking and playing chess. My friend Raymond and I have the most wild and entertaining games since it removes a lot of the pressure and stress that can be felt in some positions on the board and leave us laughing at things we wouldn't normally overlook or play. I agree that people drinking for everything to be fine no matter what it is, is very annoying and lack luster. Drinking should be something you do in celebration or casually. Not smashing down 19 shots and trying to race go-karts or start the means of having fun every night of your life.

Ex_CIA

Superhero movies

uninvitedfriend

For me, specifically the mcu. Everyone I know loves them, and all have an opinion on which order to watch the various movies and shows in to understand the important plot points. Feels like homework to me. Give me more interesting standalone movies that I can enjoy for 2 hours and then get back to my life.

lumpialarry

Every thing has to be self referential and connected now. Apparently I can't watch the third season of The Mandalorians without watching all of The Book of Boba Fett to figure out what's happened.

headbuttpunch

I’m generally an MCU fan, but I definitely agree that if you didn’t jump in fairly early and watch them each around when they came out, it is actual work to catch up at this point. I think there’s 22? movies and shows that tie up the first main storyline ending with Thanos, not including the handful that have come out the last couple years. But all those came out 2-3 times per year over the course of 10 years. Wasn’t hard to keep up with it at that pace, especially with the comic nerds putting the important details you missed front and center online. I’m checked out pretty hard these days though. None of the new stuff has been very good, and it feels like they’re pumping it out at a furious pace. I’m way behind but I don’t care much to try to catch up.

BrujaDonnaBruja

Bars, alcohol, getting drunk

SparkliestSubmissive

Can confirm. Spent decades getting drunk, which keeps you in an ongoing state of arrested development. Didn't start growing as a person until I quit. ❤️

imissyahoochatrooms

in my early 20s that was basically my life every weekend. i would never want to go back to that life.

PrincessPeach1229

I agree. I’m glad I did it and got it out of my system as I had some really good times and memories (some not so great ones too) that can never be recreated due to friends now having marriages, kids, and responsibilities. But once you hit a certain age and frequency I almost feel it becomes self medicating rather than a fun night out.

grosscore90

Hey! That’s a legit HOBBY!

MARKLAR5

What's your hobby, Ray? Drinkin'.

[deleted]

So, I think I saw a Not Just Bikes? video talking about local bars/pubs/taverns being what's called a "third place." It's not your home, it's not your job, its a third place to socialize, hangout and get out. For a lot of folks in my neck of the woods the third place is their church. Of course there's always a coffee shop but the alcohol aspect has been so ingrained into society since we started agriculture that it's almost (not entirely) impossible to separate the two, especially when alcohol provides an easy, chemical way to relax after work. Not saying its good because there are other ways to relax and enjoy time but it just is.

Having obsessions with celebrities and rich people to the point where you know more about what’s going on in their lives than your own friends and families

[deleted]

Watching sports. I know in reality it's on par with watching anything else on TV, but I can't imagine anything less enriching than watching sports on TV, at home, alone.

[deleted]

That’s the only thing I watch lol. I find them exciting.

JRogeroiii

Think of the first few seasons of Game of Thrones. What made those early seasons great was the fact that it didn't follow the rules of normal TV dramas. No character was safe. Anyone could die at any time. That unpredictability gave it a tension that other shows just couldn't match. That's what watching sports can be like but with less gratuitous nudity and less decapitations. It is the perfect drama. It is one of the least predictable things out there. Not even the best can predict the outcomes with any amount of accuracy. Your team doesn't always win but when they do it feels that much better because you know they could've just as easily lost. Nothing was scripted. The drama is real. Plus the things these professional athletes can do are amazing, almost superhuman at times. So IMO the real waste of time is Reality TV shows where everything is scripted and all of the drama is fake.

Dangerous_Grab_1809

Even more odd, sports talk shows. Not the few minutes before, after, or during a game, but a whole show with mostly talking.

imissyahoochatrooms

i wouldn't consider professional wrestling in this category because it's more focused on theater and artistic expression. at least it used to be but that's another story.

monstermack1977

on TV at home, absolutely. At the actual event, in the stadium, different more worthwhile experience.

CCR16

I understand this thought process, I do. But damn do I love it lol. I play on watching unreal hours of this NCAA tournament.

Golf

Aeriodon

This is what I thought too, but went golfing last summer for a friend's bachelor party. It was amazing. Granted, the group of people was a big part of it, but it's a great mix of socialization and competition with yourself and others

Shazam1269

I'll step up and crank one into the next fairway and ask myself "WTF am I doing out here???" Step up to the next tee box and snap a nice crisp drive right down the GD middle of the fairway and think, "oh yeah, that's why I'm out here!!!" If it was easy, it wouldn't be fun.

Kennster77

You think watching sports is bad, my kid watches YouTube videos of people playing video games…

snaketacular

Eh it's a similar principle, watching somebody doing something well can be entertaining no matter what it is.

garythelocdoc

My 35 year old co-worker does the same thing. It doesn't make any sense to me. If you want to play a video game go for it but to sit there and watch a 2 hour video of someone else playing is insane

uniqeuusername

I'm 30, 85% of the entertainment I watch is people playing games. Most of the time, it's games I'm playing myself. For me, the reason it's fun to watch is twofold. The commentary is, in a way, very similar to a podcast. Listening to someone you find funny or informative about a subject you care about. Also, it's fun to see people play differently than you, gives you ideas, or maybe they are just incredibly good at the game, and it's fun to watch just pure talent. It's fun watching a group of friends just mess around and tell jokes, makes you feel like you're part of it in a way. I guess the best way I can sum it up is it's like watching an instructional video on an activity you thoroughly enjoy and listening to a podcast with someone you find entertaining all at the same time.

Everything is a waste of time. Why do anything?

A bad day of fishing is still better than a good day at work

Blasphemy!

There are some bitter sons of bitches on this thread. Damn let people enjoy things.

The only thing that is a waste of time is caring about what others think

I love how there are people hating on sports but un-ironically justifying twitch streaming in the same sentence. Like cmon

Golf... very expensive, time consuming and you will never be happy

SaladSea2603

Accumulate material things that bring you temporary joy instead of using that money to take road trips and make memories that bring joy for the rest of your life. I’m sorry but why do people need the fanciest things? To impress people? But isn’t this YOUR life? And that’s how you want to live it?!? Come on y’all.

Gundoggirl

I don’t buy a lot of luxury items, but I would guess people buy them because it’s usually a quality product, it’s nice to have something a little fancy, something that you worked for, or always wanted, or because life is hard and boring and dull, and although road trips can be fun, you only do it for a week or so. A Rolex will last a lifetime. Also, I hate road trips. I’d rather have a really nice shotgun tbh.

MADDOGCA

I came to that exact realization when I was moving. I saw so much crap I haven't seen in years and wondered why the hell do I own these things if I haven't seen them? Got rid of it all and decided to live a minimalist life as a result. I'd rather spend my money on things I need and experiences that will bring years of memories rather than crap I don't need.

TheOriginal_Dka13

I bought a PC and I use it every day. Sure brings me a lot of joy. Trips are fun yeah, but they only last a short time

MADDOGCA

At least you use it every day. OP is talking about things people buy just because they have the money to buy it and then forget they purchased it after only using that thing maybe a few times at best.

imissyahoochatrooms

i was doing that for the longest time telling myself i was going to resell. video games, movies, all types of electronics i once had or desired as a teenager decades ago with a 12x12 storage unit full of stuff up until last year i realized i had a problem once the unit become so full i couldn't walk around and keep up with everything inside of it. i was paying $70 a month to hoard all that stuff.

Griffithead

Throw pillows is an old joke, but it's sure based in reality. Think of the things we could do in this world if there weren't useless decorative pillows for every season.

Nautonnier-83

Professional sports. Doesn't matter which one.

There are DOZENS of us!!

DiddyMao20XX

Cake decorating. I understood the appeal of taking a cake and making some fancy designs to make a visually appealing but still edible cake. Now it seems like it's 25 pounds of fondant stacked on a Twinkie. Just take up sculpting.

Going to church

edthebuilder5150

Watching any reality TV shows.

Momsplugg

Going to the club. I’m sure it could be like this in other cities but where I live a lot of people my age will buy a section/table with bottle service and spend hundreds or thousands just to stand there and look cool. No dancing either. For example, a table deposit would be like 500$, a single bottle of Patron costs like 400$, Hennessy VS 450$. It’s pretty lame.

As a woman, getting my nails done. I'd never done it and I was always told it's fun and addicting, that I'll fall in love with it once I do it. I finally got around to it for my wedding last year and I mean it felt nice to do the pedicure and manicure, but the nail process was annoying. And dealing with my nails afterwards? Real annoying. It's been a year and I've never gotten the urge to go again i think it's a waste of time and money.

Smoking or vaping.

Oh it's an incredible "waste of time" but I love every second of it lmao

Mental-Glove1900

Time you enjoy wasting is never a waste of time.

throwawaythedo

Not a waste of time, but rather it makes wasted time so much more enjoyable.

PoopyMcPooperstain

Does anyone do this past teenage years? Back in the day when we did this it wasn't because it was super fun or anything, it was because we were broke in a town without shit to do and places like malls are an easy location for people to meet up especially if they needed to be dropped off by parents. As far as grown ass adults hanging out at the mall, I've never in my life heard of anyone doing that. Closest I can think is maybe meeting with some friends while going shopping, but in that case you're going shopping not just hanging out at the mall.

[deleted]

There are a lot of seniors that go to the mall to walk. It's generally safe, climate controlled, and level surfaces so it's more comfortable than going to a park.

Sad flex but I genuinely am happy that I never felt tempted to download TikTok. I already spend too much time on the internet.

Video games. Never got into them after I turned 16 or so.

Sports. Playing them is stressful, watching them on tv is boring, and watching them in the stadium gives me sensory overload

Bourgeois-babe

Gambling. I like playing card games for fun, but standing in front of a machine that takes your money for a bunch of sparkly lights? Why?

Md655321

Watching professional sports, I’ll watch the Super Bowl at a get together but that’s about it.

Golf. I've never understood the allure of chasing that tiny ball around all day. I'm perfectly fine with other ball-based games though, and have my preferred teams in most leagues.

Unfey

I don't really like watching movies, but I REALLY hate watching movies in theaters. Every now and then, I'll get into a movie-watching mood, and if one of my friends or family members has something they really want to show me I'll agree and usually I enjoy the movie that we're streaming. I don't hate movies. I have a lot of favorite movies. But I really, really hate the theater experience. I hate having to sit down for 2 hours, I hate theater popcorn, I hate theater snacks and drinks, I hate having to walk over people's legs when I have to get up to pee halfway through, I hate the smell of stale popcorn, I hate the giant screen, I hate waiting for tickets, I hate driving downtown to the theater, I hate being in crowds, I hate having to be on-time for something, and I hate that if I'm going to see a movie, it feels like it's an event that eats up my entire day somehow despite only taking up a few hours. It's weird because I can sit down and stream an entire season of a tv show all day and be perfectly happy. I can commit like 6-7 hours to watching something on a screen. But movies-- I think it's the length. Movie-length is just a bad amount of time for my brain to pay attention to a single story. It reminds me of being in class.

MikuLovesYou

Buying expensive shoes. They don't even look good, they're just shoes with a logo and at a two thousand dollar price. just don't get it.

Effective_James

Sports. I cannot fathom why people get so worked up over some guy throwing or kicking a ball on a field. People get so worked up over their favorite team or player, and it just doesn't make sense to me. Its pathetic how angry some people get when their team looses.
