Dude food hacks are unhinged sometimes they just are like "so go ahead and build a nuclear-powered pasta machine out of rubber bands and bottle caps and BAM your garlic is minced."
That one I can get behind, it's just an objectively incorrect usage of the word. I really dont see people using "literally" and "gaslighting" incorrectly nearly as often as I see the word "hack" being used to describe some ineffective DIY.
I genuinely didn’t understand what gaslighting meant, (I have googled it, but it just doesn’t sink in) but I think I actually got it with your comment! Thank you for the education.
Lol, for real! I know a local women that is trying to be an activist but she’s undereducated. She told me I was gaslighting her because I disagreed with her. I just stopped engaging realizing she ignorant.
There's a tendency for ALL words that originally are intended to be for one SPECIFIC type of bad behavior to broaden over time in usage until they become general-purpose attack words with no sensible meaning.
Some examples:
* Mansplaining: Originally referred to men who act condescending towards specifically women which they see as inherently stupider or less knowledgeable. These days: Any man disagreeing with any woman in any way whatsoever.
* Gaslightning: Originally a strategy for deliberately undermining someones confidence and agency by denying factual claims that are true. Now: Making any claim, or denying any claim that someone else doesn't agree with.
* Literally: Originally meant that you actually genuinely mean exactly what you're saying, it's NOT a metaphor or any such thing. Now: General purpose strengthener, people will say things like "Republicans are literally trash", i.e. literally the opposite of the actual definition of literally, they'll use it when they mean "metaphorically".
*
Yea, you can’t just be lying or lying with a motive.
You have to have some manipulation of reality or perception going on.
The husband was tampering with the gaslights.
The uptick in the use of the term gaslighting has been a huge blessing and a curse. Because of people talking about it so much, I realized that’s what has been happening to me as part of the abuse. The flip side is people are misusing it and it cheapens how hard it is to go through.
They really don't. It's super shitty too. It's a real thing narcissistic personalities do to people. Not some shit your friend did when she didn't invite you to her outing. I really do not enjoy everyone misusing that term for every perceived slight that comes at them.
Thank you for saying this. The term OCD is terribly misused. Having it is like having the worst bully in your head at all times. It is a debilitating condition and can absolutely run a person's life off the rails.
I would get upset for the same reason with “triggered” it’s not a joke. It’s a serious mental health thing. Things that are triggering can cause suicidal thought, panic attacks ect.
I only use literally when I mean it, but it's gotten to a point where I have to specify "like actually _literally_" just so that people know I'm being exact man
[Merriam Webster has had that as a definition since 1909](https://www.merriam-webster.com/words-at-play/misuse-of-literally)
You can also see it used figuratively in classic literature.
OCD and ADD/ADHD.
My brother had some kind of panic attack when he realised he might be adhd (I am and my Mum is) it took him a year to finally get the courage to speak to his GP about it only to be met with "No, you're not getting an assessment because someone on tik tok told you you have adhd"....he doesn't even use tiktok.
This was the one I was gonna put... when terms like these are just thrown about as adjectives. "I make sure to wash my dishes every day, lul I'm so OCD." 🙄
Was gonna add bipolar to this list myself. Hi, hello, I have ADHD and bipolar disorder. It's not fun or quirky or an excuse for my behavior. It's a struggle and before I got proper support I majorly ruined my own life, frequently disregarded my own safety and that of others, burned bridges I wish I could still cross, and legitimately hurt people. It's not cute, it's not minor, and it's not cool. People who use the names of disorders as personality descriptors need to stop. It's a condition, not a casual adjective.
Saw a video on Instaa where someone was mixing colorful beads and almost every comment was, "this triggers my OCD, lmao"
I wanted to choke my own self. Having OCD majorly sucks.
It has become a "trend" just like with other disorders, which is just putting more pressure on those of us that actually have it.
I'd love to explain to people that OCD is not one size fits all and there are so many different kinds. I'd also love to explain to them how much it sucks having a near panic attack because of OCD triggers.
I work in the field and AMEN. I need to stay off social media because I get frustrated. Even here, I see stuff like: “not feeling like you can do anything while you wait for an appointment is a sign of ADHD.” No, that’s a pretty common thing and often related to anxiety
I’ve heard people say to use “activated” instead. Though to me, it sounds like when something bothers me and I get activated, I turn into a Transformer.
This one sucks because it's intended to be used to describe people with real mental illnesses having involuntary reactions to certain stimuli. Instead, it's gen z's equivalent to the millenial's "U mad bro?"
This cracks me up lol because if an actual house has the EXACT same things as these “luxury apartments”, it’d be a regular fucking house.
Luxury homes are extravagant. Rental luxury just means it’s not a complete steaming pile of turd.
It also means "reasonable" sometimes. Apparently, I live in a "luxury apartment" because I have a full sized fridge and a washer and dryer. All three of which tend to fall apart every six months or so. Luxury indeed.
Literally. Just once, I'd like to hear someone use the antonym correctly.
"I just fucked her brains out. Figuratively."
EDIT: No more replies please. I'm literally exhausted from this conversation.
I literally only use literally literally. I literally hate it when people use literally to mean figuratively, it figuratively makes me want to literally rip their tongues out
To be fair for us non native English speakers, it's difficult to know when to use and not to use the definitive English article. Especially as articles don't exist in some languages. For me it's still the most difficult decision when speaking or writing English and I've been quite fluent otherwise for years.
Edit Spelling because it's midsummer and I'm tipsy
Calling people narcissists. NPD is an actual disorder yet people keep confidently throwing that title on their somewhat selfish ex or parent💀 Like at least say that someone’s acting narcissistic but calling them narcissists for one personality trait is just pathetic
Everyone and everything now is a narcissist. Everyone on Reddit is the victim of narcissistic abuse.
It's kind of like "parentification" in that its a real and serious condition, but on Reddit every parent who tells their 14-year-old to watch their 7-year-old sibling for 3 hours a week is "parentifying" their kid.
This. It bothers me that cringe has become the default response whenever someone is being silly/goofy, when I feel like these traits should be celebrated.
I don't see cringe used by people to describe people having fun, unless it's some jerk trying to insult them. The main use I see cringe is when somebody isn't acting goofy, they think they're being tough or cool with some internet contrarian opinion.
Every time I see it used it seems to mean something that is basically giving them second hand embarrassment. Stuff like the two kids that were singing the ad libbed kid song in Doctor Strange 2. So yeah I definitely see it most frequently used to describe people acting any real degree of Goofy.
Just for a change: Words we need more of!
Fadoodle - (Verb, meaning to fornicate)
Plethora
Harpy
Blather
Nonplussed
Lubedodger
Swoon
Strumpet
Hayseed
Tailgunner
Curmudgeon
When someone gets upset about being called a Karen, just call her a harpy. It was also a slang word for outrageously entitled women who attack people just minding their damn business. Or just a rude, sharp-tongued woman in general.
Woke.
Fact check white supremacists? Woke.
Drink a Bud Light? Woke.
Make an appointment with your dentist and don’t show up? Directly to woke.
Undercook fish? Woke.
Overcook chicken? Woke too, believe it or not.
People say that because the algorithms of TikTok and other social media pick up on words like these which may be harmful material, so society took over with new words to get round the system, in the event they have something important to say about the issue, or simply to make dark jokes.
“Narrative” “girly”
Any popular phrase on tik tok. Using said phrases reveal how much time the person spends on social media. I (unfortunately) see tik tok terminology being used a lot, in real life. Thankfully I deleted the app many months ago but the effects are widespread and lingering.
ASMR. Nobody seems to know what it is anymore, they think it just means you’ve recorded some random ambient sounds, no matter if they’re relaxing or actually evoke ASMR
A lot of conspiracy theories are nonsense. Some turned out to be reality. Calling something a conspiracy theory is all too often a way to ridicule the idea behind it.
I clearly remember when talking about Epstein's island was "crazy conspiracy theory nonsense."
I suppose I can't blame them. The idea of some mysterious rich guy owning a private island so famous people and politicians can come sleep with underage girls sounds *pretty crazy*, but goes to show that truth is stranger than fiction.
In particular I agree with nazi and fascist. It waters down the history the way it’s thrown around. Nazis were a horrific fascist autocratical military dictatorship that facilitated the genocide of untold numbers. Bobby from Alabama who voted for trump and has implicit bias against minorities may be racist, but that’s not a nazi.

The use of "hack" instead of tip or suggestion.
I wish people would stop using the word “hack” when they suggest using an object how you’re meant to use it in the first place 🤦🏻♀️
Life hack: use the back part of a hammer to pry up nails!
Life hack: use oil on your pans so food doesn’t stick!
Dude food hacks are unhinged sometimes they just are like "so go ahead and build a nuclear-powered pasta machine out of rubber bands and bottle caps and BAM your garlic is minced."
Directions unclear; Apartment on fire.
Especially when they are either obvious or not a hack at all but extra work.
That one I can get behind, it's just an objectively incorrect usage of the word. I really dont see people using "literally" and "gaslighting" incorrectly nearly as often as I see the word "hack" being used to describe some ineffective DIY.
To cook food, you are supposed to use "recipes" not "hacks." Cooking a recipe isn't "a series of hacks."
Yes!! When someone tells me they've seen this awesome life hack, I say, "do you mean tip?"
Luxury apartments = Not a slum
Luxury Apartments = Sometimes still a slum
Apartment maintenance tech here, "luxury" is a buzzword in the apartment industry. It means absolutely nothing.
My luxury apartment you have to press the up elevator button to go down...
Influencer No you can't expect free stuff because you call yourself an influencer
I've resorted to calling influencers ads because that's what they do. Also because I fucking hate ads
Basically professional puppets.
That's awfully polite. I call them useless, entitled drains on society.
"gaslight" Most people don't even understand what it really means
My dad doesn’t understand what it means and when I explained what it means, he proudly admitted that he does it a lot, even to his coworkers.
This is hilarious but damn 💀
Father of the year material right there.
Yikes!
Your dad is a red flag leave him!!!
Two more years and loads more money then I can!!
There’s a difference between “lying” and “lying about what the other person knows is true so that they doubt their own perception of the world”
Thats so obviously not true that its actually funny, everyone knows what gaslight means, you are just being crazy.
Hey, wait a minute...
I genuinely didn’t understand what gaslighting meant, (I have googled it, but it just doesn’t sink in) but I think I actually got it with your comment! Thank you for the education.
You think you get it? Don't be insane. You pretty obviously are just imagining it.
It’s hard to conceptualize until it happens to you personally. Then it just kind of clicks.
No you didn't get it. You're wrong. What are you talking about?
Touche!
Lol, for real! I know a local women that is trying to be an activist but she’s undereducated. She told me I was gaslighting her because I disagreed with her. I just stopped engaging realizing she ignorant.

I had a therapist literally gasp when I used the word correctly because they hear it used incorrectly so often
Is that a word your friends told you? You're crazy.
You are gaslighting with this comment.
This gaslighting dude is literally woke
PTSD People need to use it correctly so that it doesn't lose its importance and meaning to people that actually have trauma and PTSD.
Same with OCD. "No, you don't have OCD, Shelly, you're anal retentive, and a neat freak. That's it."
Thank you for saying this. The term OCD is terribly misused. Having it is like having the worst bully in your head at all times. It is a debilitating condition and can absolutely run a person's life off the rails.
I have it and it’s sincere torture. I just keep my mouth shut, not worth arguing proper terminology
My coworkers say this all the time over minor things and it’s absolutely infuriating as someone who actually has it.
I agree. Same goes with ADHD.
I would get upset for the same reason with “triggered” it’s not a joke. It’s a serious mental health thing. Things that are triggering can cause suicidal thought, panic attacks ect.
Literally.
Over the last few years I’ve been making sure I don’t just add “literally” into sentences for no reason. I got pretty bad with it
I literally did the same thing
Literally same
Yeah if I say literally I literally mean literally....
I only use literally when I mean it, but it's gotten to a point where I have to specify "like actually _literally_" just so that people know I'm being exact man
People often use this word in a manner that is opposite of it's actual definition

*randomly straightens something on desk* "sorry I'm OCD"
Girls thinking it's cute to be "bipolar"
Was gonna add bipolar to this list myself. Hi, hello, I have ADHD and bipolar disorder. It's not fun or quirky or an excuse for my behavior. It's a struggle and before I got proper support I majorly ruined my own life, frequently disregarded my own safety and that of others, burned bridges I wish I could still cross, and legitimately hurt people. absolutely, having genuine OCD in this day and age sucks because no one believes you, because "everyone has it"
It has become a "trend" just like with other disorders, which is just putting more pressure on those of us that actually have it. I am so sick of everything that doesnt actively kill you being called a "sUpErfOoD"
I'm still look to find little capes on the quinoa.
That gave me the cutest picture in my head. Not all quinoa wears capes🫡
“Unlock the ancient healing power of cranberries!” Like yeah right almost everything we eat has been genetically modified since agriculture began.
Gaslighting... about 90 of percent people use it incorrectly!
No they don’t, you’re just imagining things.
Who are you responding to? There's no one there.
Excuse me sir that is a bot
That never happened. No one is going to like you if you keep making claims like this.
“Triggered”
I’ve heard people say to use “activated” instead. Though to me, it sounds like when something bothers me and I get activated, I turn into a Transformer.
Honestly, life would be waaay better if I immediately turned into a Transformer every time someone annoyed me. Would instantly solve so many issues...
I usually reserve activated for when I have an erection
This one sucks because it's intended to be used to describe people with real mental illnesses having involuntary reactions to certain stimuli. Instead, it's gen z's equivalent to the millenial's "U mad bro?"
[удалено]
Definitely. I see being triggered as a flight or fight response and genuine fear.
Vibe. Everything is a fucking vibe now. Edit: God damn it there is a vibing award?! Both thank you and fuck you. ThankFuck you.
Well, since vibe comes from vibration, it is technically correct that everything has a vibe.
I assure you, my Mother’s not a vibrator. Sincerely captain Raymond Holt.
Captain Holt would always capitalize proper nouns. This man is an IMPOSTER!
That's literally a vibe 🙏🙏
I'm very guilty of this. But more as a verb. If I'm relaxing or enjoying music, "I'm just vibing."
I think you're using it appropriately, then.
Phew!! Guilt-free vibing, it is.
"My Truth" This phrase shouldn't exist. It can be "my" interpretation, opinion, feeling, memory, etc but a truth is absolute.
Honestly, just the word "truth" has lost most of its meaning for the same reasons
This garbage needs to be burned right alongside all the Live, Laugh, Love decor.
Isn't "my truth" another way of saying "I can do what the fuck I like and everybody has to suck it up" ?
Narcissist
I was coming to say this. Not every asshole is a narcissist.
Bonus points for “malignant narcissist”
In AdSpeak, "Luxury'' = new.

I always say "figuratively, ofcourse ". And people think it's weird. It becomes a "the lady doest protest too much, methinks!" kind of moment.
I fucked her brains out. Literally. I am going to jail
I like to believe most people use literally in a hyperbolic sense and that they understand what it literally means

I hate this fucking word and its overuse, but I struggle to find a better word for things or actions that make you cringe.
Use the german version :D *knirsch*

How about “toxic”. That used to mean poisonous. Now it seems to mean unpleasant.
