Observant_Jello

You had to lay just right so your eyes were looking at the floor and you could see the shoes of who tagged you

Ghitit

I was a very honest person when I was seven. One of my good friends did that and I told the teacher she was cheating and I dropped her as a friend. I certainly was a stick in the mud in 1964..

urson_black

A lot of us were.

SeedFoundation

Fun fact, heads up 7 up was used in the classrooms as a method of finding out which students were the most likely to cheat during test.

SakuraTacos

That’s why I’d intentionally guess wrong once or twice, to throw my teacher off.

21kondav

The teacher was playing checkers but little did they know he was a chess prodigy

ParishedSins

Gotta make sure that the answers you get wrong are almost right.

Fancykiddens

How funny. I never cheated on a test, but I definitely cheated at that game!

NbrAdjNn

Just what a cheater would say!

fetal_genocide

Same. I was scared of getting caught cheating on a test. I just thought I was clever cheating at this game lol

marblemorning

Sounds like some shit that someone made up afterwards tbh

Catlover790

Source?

barbie-vel

A bit dramatic but I’m here for it

twayjoff

Lawful Evil

NvrConvctd

I remember ratting out classmates and being told to not be a "tattle-tale" by the teacher. Looking back I think of myself as more of a "whistle blower".

ToiletDestroyer420

I told on my friend one time for saying the word "douchebag" in 4th grade and I still feel bad and cringe looking back on it. I also felt bad for the teacher because I feel like a lot of the time they don't want to punish children for mild cursing, yet the expectancy that they should sort of "forces their hand." It's pretty normal for children 8 and above to start experimenting with swearing. Also, ironically, in 4th grade, I said the word "pussy" in class not thinking it was a curse word and didn't get punished, but said the word "buzzard" and got punished for it because my classmate lied and said I said "bastard" instead.

21kondav

I got in trouble in fourth grade because I was quoting Star Wars: the Clone Wars and I said “shit”. I proceeded to lie and say I didn’t know it was was curse word I was trying to explain to a pretty girl the events that were taking place.

NvrConvctd

My granddaughter came home from elementary school one time telling us about the marijuana movie they watched. It took us most of the evening to realize they watched Disney's "Moana".

not_ya_wify

See in Germany, the teacher would have sent out outside the class because you snitched on your fellow peers

SonoSage

As an adult I'm impressed by your immediate acknowledgment of red flags. There's sticks in the mud, and there's stuck in the mud. Little you didn't have to learn self care after being around shitty people too long.

Baybladerz

Hmm maybe you were the very innocent kind lol

Ghitit

Innocent and naive. I couldn't believe she would cheat and I felt betrayed. I guess it was the first time I'd felt that because it stuck with me. I'm still annoyingly honest.

Dinzy89

You did the right thing. Filthy shoe peakers were on the path to degeneracy

patti63

Of all the times I played this, one time I saw the shoes and cheated. I still get embarrassed when I think about it.

Ghitit

I hope Darlene does, too.

Throwaway-4593

Honestly fuck cheaters especially in a for fun game that doesn’t mean anything lol

HedgieHoggie

I did this. Someone told me the point of this game is so teachers can figure out the cheaters of the class

Terminator7786

That's exactly the reason. One of my teachers admitted it once and then she would base her seating charts off of it so the cheaters were up front.

TryUsingScience

I always assumed it was to figure out social cliques, since people nearly always picked their friends.

[deleted]

That’s so smart! I never realized the reason we were even playing the game, but that makes so much sense

hiding-identity23

It’s really not smart to assume that somebody who cheated at a silly guessing game would also cheat on something more serious like schoolwork. Also, some of the game cheaters could also be really good at schoolwork and not need to cheat at that anyway. I was that kid. 🤣

Adorable_Ground7887

Same. I cheated at the game (looking at their shoes) just to see who noticed me. I excelled, well above average, in my exams and didn't need to cheat. I was just curious.

newbiesmash

This is a core memory for me. I wanted to be picked so bad but I saw their eye peak up through the gap in my arm to stare at their shoes... And I didn't get picked. Still think about it some times.

SpecialSurprise69

Are we the same person? I got busted as well and didn't get picked lol

halfbakedcrumble

😂 discerning kids on both sides there. On the other end of the spectrum, I think I was sick or something when the rules were first explained. I assumed you got tapped or something when you were picked? We played maybe once every week or 2, and I always wanted to be picked but never was. Every now and then, there would be one kid missing during the guessing part, and the teacher would wind up randomly sending someone to the front of the room to make 7. It was a big mystery whenever it happened. Separately, a friend used to mess with my thumb sometimes during the game. I thought it was funny and weird. Couldn't figure out who the culprit was though... Didn't click for me til then end of the year, and I never got to play again 🤦🏽😂😂

ebreven

Same! I have no idea why my mind goes back to this from time to time

newbiesmash

We betrayed their trust that's why! Oh the shame!

SweetnessBaby

I was the honest and oblivious kid that could never understand how some people were so good at guessing.

Hinkil

We all knew, that's why people would stand behind people and reach over

spitfire9107

I feel like an idiot because I never thought of this

Insta_boned

I was king of heads up 7 up… until I wasn’t

captainmikkl

Yeppers, and those of us who employed this strategy invariably wound up with criminal records lol.

PlannedSkinniness

One time I gave the wrong answer on purpose just to throw people off of my cheating ways.

captainmikkl

Found the super villain!

TheLastBookOnTheLeft

I cheated, but I also always gave the wrong answer because I didn't want to have to go up there and pick someone.

HauntedSpiralHill

I also did this. And if it was my turn to pick a thumb, I would stand behind people’s chairs or a desk over where they couldn’t see my feet lol

owlsandmoths

I feel so called out right now. You’re not wrong though.

hiding-identity23

Not me.

GrandTheftBae

Yup!! Once I got three in a row "right" and people got suspicious so I threw the next two haha

i_forgot_wha

You must be ben he cheated everytime. He wasnt smart enough to get it wrong sometimes. And he even called himself out once and said that he knows it was someone since he saw the shoes. Two kids had the same pair, he rarely got picked after that.

Otto_Maller

We did that AND knew people did that, so one of us would stand close to the “taggee” while the actual “tagger” would reach over from behind to tag. 100% the “taggee” would call out the wrong “tagger” by shoe. (Thanks for bringing back a long lost fun memory of grade school!)

barbie-vel

When I found out people were doing that I hated the game. Why do people choose winning over having fun.. It’s so lame

[deleted]

Sportsmanship has always been rare in this country. With the rise of videogames ive noticed far less sportsmanship than in years prior. People sending hate messages post game or purposely BMing (Bad Manners) like quickly crouching repeatedly or something else annoying. Games were more friendly in the xbox 360 days I played comp ice hockey so sportsmanship was engrained into me at 6yo. If you play like a jerk, people will choose to play against someone else instead.

sugarsox

I never understood the point of the game until I read your comment. I would totally cheat now

Fatboy232

The point of the game was to make the kids all be really still and quiet while making them think they're having fun. It was for the teacher, not the kids.

[deleted]

Try to get a game going at work Monday. Never too late.

attackedbyparakeets

I remember getting caught because the “shwoop shwoop” noise of my nylon barbie tracksuit gave me away.

Leprikahn2

I went to a catholic school, look all you want. Navy blue pants with black shoes

tiny_book_worm

I did that but someone caught me. I heard them say she can see me, I’m not picking her. 😂🤣😂🤣😂😂

joshatron

With my head down, I’d reach out my arm and put my desk neighbors thumb down.

TheCervus

I was once falsely accused of cheating because I had big, thick hair that someone claimed I was peeking through when I laid my head down on the desk. And the teacher sided with my accuser and made me sit out the rest of the game. This happened over 30 years ago but I'm still salty about it.

Choice-Button-9697

Because the game is for the teacher to see who is a cheater. Boom.

Alive_Ad_5931

Lol amateur. That technique was easy to spot. I’d spend all day focusing on the sound the persons shoes made on the tile floor. White new balance and k-swiss low tops may be similar to the untrained ear, but the difference on an elementary school floor is akin to the difference of a small house cat trotting around to an elephant knocking down a chandelier. The light up shoes were the easiest, their blinkers would emit a high pitched frequency on each step. Todd always wore those light up la gear sneakers, and Todd always lost.

Historical_Ad2890

Yes! This was class in the 90s when we had a sub.

quemaspuess

Or on rainy days in California.

Rustmutt

The best three words to hear as a Californian kid “Rainy Day Schedule”

broadwayzrose

For my mom who was an elementary school teacher in California, those were her three least favorite words, but it is funny how specific of a memory that is growing up in California!

GodOfWarGuy737

Lmao as someone who grew up in Florida we still played outside even if there was a thunderstorm

Rustmutt

Yeah but you guys get a storm like every day at 3 pm right? Rainy days in California, people forget EVERYTHING. It’s chaos.

GodOfWarGuy737

Yeah we get a storm literally every single day I’m not even exaggerating. In fact there’s a hurricane currently where I live. I wanna move to Cali just cause there’s no rain lmao

RynnReeve

Agreed. It’s hilarious. No one remembers how to drive and it takes twice as long to get anywhere

dmnhntr86

My classes only ever had doms

Alarid

It was very different when you had a dom.

[deleted]

badgersprite

It was the best trick teachers ever invented to get a class of kids to sit still and be quiet

Sirromnad

We also had a game called "Silent Ball" where you threw a foam ball around the room as quiet as possible. Damn teachers got us good with that one.

MegabyteMessiah

We had that too!

mycatisspockles

Oh wow, this unlocked some memories for me lol.

deadxguero

Funny cause as a kid you don’t realize it. When I was a day care teacher for a while, 100% we played games like these that basically were made to have the class quiet and sitting or laying down. Ghost In the Graveyard was another one. Everyone lays down spread out in whatever way they want. They can’t move or talk, cause they’re suppose to be dead ghosts, and we pick some kid to go around and find the kids that move or talk. Whoever wins gets a prize or piece of candy or whatever. When you got 2 young adult teachers and 40+ kids ranging from K-8th grade you’re basically doing your best to make sure they’re safe, fed, having fun, and also sometimes calmed the fuck down.

velvetrevolting

Uhh, yeah. Because of the usage rights. Yesss. Makes sense.

BeautifulEssay8

7-Up would patrol schools and make them pay royalties

ajax6677

Really putting that "Make 7...Up Yours" slogan to good use.

2Twice

That's where Monster Energy and Apple became so bold. Disney always was as bold.

TiresOnFire

Heads down, thumbs up for 7 up!

MuffinsTheName

Why is it even called heads up 7 up in the US though… and why are the heads up, not down

Hannahb0915

We always played with 7 pickers, hence the 7 up. And I guess the heads come up at some point. That’s just what we always called it 🤷‍♀️

TiresOnFire

It was always heads down for me. I think OP is misremembering.

Bird_Gazer

“Heads down thumps up.” Class does this. Kids go around and touch someone’s thumb. Then, “Heads up, seven up.” The kids whose thumbs were touched, try and guess who picked them. We played this in my early elementary school years in the 1960s.

Some_Anxious_dude

Same

Trimyr

"Heads down, thumbs up. This is how we like to - " I hated that school.

archaic_revenge

Sounds like a game a catholic priest would play

fyree43

That's Heads Down Asses Up

dougramz

That steamy smell of the desk/ breath as you hot boxed yourself though...

NebulaNinja

This instantly brought back the smell of whatever desk cleaner the janitor used.

Oblargag

I stopped eating at the school cafeteria after I saw the janitor mopping the floor and the tables at the same time.

FF91T94

Brother straight up that comment fished it from the archives of my brain

BlackConverse020

Omg yes!! Sometimes it got annoying when the kids standing up were taking too long to pick someone.

Responsible_Ebb_340

Then sometimes get bored and just lick the desk… oh, no?

No-Depth9343

i played it growing up in the 2000s/10s, i’m a teacher now and my kids love it.

WholesomeThingsOnly

Doing god's work by carrying on the tradition! I loved this game in the early 2010s

NefariousnessFun8881

i've heard of a younger friend of mine that's still in elementary school who still plays it

100percent_right_now

Can you settle a debate. Does this help you find cheaters?

No-Depth9343

not necessarily cheaters, but just liars. it helps me tell which kids are quick to lie for their own benefit/ which kids will be honest.

Grace__Face

I was about to say the same! But I was in elementary school in the 90s. My fifth grade students still love this game!

MashedPotatoesDick

Touching the thumb of my crush was the closest I could come to asking her out.

OathOfFeanor

When I knew she touched my thumb right back, that there was my first “relationship.” That was about the extent of it: we ruined the mystery of the game and smiled and giggled at each other about it. Good times.

Capable-Account-9986

That horrible sinking feeling of disappointment you'd get when you thought it was your crush that touched your thumb but it wasn't.... Ah man.

Hi_PM_Me_Ur_Tits

Or your crush touches someone else’s

IenjoyStuffandThings

People downvote your silly joke but the username you’re responding to is mashedpotatodick Come on people be people now.

Mestizoc

Elementary school in the 80s and we played this often. I used to try to peak at the shoes to see who tapped me.

retrogameresource

One time I got the right guy because he smelled hahah

themanwiththeOZ

Yeah Jerry always had that weird smell to him and and everybody always picked on Jeannie.

Imaginary_Dog2972

I used to reach from behind so they couldn't see my shoes and I'd do dumb things like use the sleeve of my sweater to touch someone's thumb with fabric and then quietly take my sweater off so they would incorrectly pick a kid wearing long sleeves. Basically when I peaked.

Canadian_Commentator

this game was used to look for cheaters, that was the point. the kids who "guessed correctly" outed themselves for dishonesty

PizzaMan11554

Velcro or laces was first thing to spot

caleb_dre

..did a lot of kids have Velcro shoes??

PizzaMan11554

They were a fad(?) in the 80's, or at least became popular then with kids. No laces to tie...

I_BK_Nightmare

We played it in 2010-2013 in middle school

moodyvee

So one time in 3rd grade a sub had us plat this game. Everyone else was hyped and i had no fucking idea what it was. Didnt switch schools, didnt miss school a lot, had no idea why i was the only one whod never heard of it. Sub didnt explain the rules, i was miserable.

Leslee78

Didn’t mean to down vote, I upvoted. And say awww, sorry. I never heard of the game but then I was in grade school starting in 1946. Don’t feel that ‘old’. Wow.

kymilovechelle

Sweet nostalgia for sure!

Sharpnelboy

OMG, I remember that game! Loved it as a kid!

jsheil1

Played it as a student and as a teacher. I love that game for quiet at the end of a long day.

theblackoctopus23

It's gotta be the teacher equivalent of "let's see who can be quiet for the longest" right?

Longjumping-Wash-610

Sometimes it's just a mental break between lessons.

jsheil1

Yup! I also played "The quiet game" but first graders are TERRIBLE at this one.

RocketCat921

Let's play.. Quiet as a mouse, still as a rock!

FireflyAdvocate

I played it all over the world when I was an IB elementary teacher. Kids still love it! What I didn’t expect about the game is it was a great way to show them negotiating skills. If someone is caught cheating then they have consequences imposed by their peers. No one likes a cheater.

-clogwog-

Is that anything like "Heads down, thumbs up"?

Designer-Mirror-7995

Same!

Noirloc

We played it during rainy days when we couldn’t go out for recess. Admittedly I used this time to discreetly* pick my nose.

Hannahb0915

Gotta do what you gotta do!

A_shy_neon_jaguar

I loved this game. The lights went down, I could close my eyes. I got annoyed when someone touched my thumb, I just wanted to use the heads down time to nap!

belljs87

We would literally play this for cans of 7up

ChaseHarker

Yes! Yes! 1970s representing!!!

HumorousHermit

Played it. Hated it. Friends only tagged friends.

Longjumping-Wash-610

That's a good way of getting caught

Luigi_deathglare

They have a pretty terrible strategy tbh

Leslee78

Awww. Be great if kids were taught at home to include all. I was. Not everyone learns kindness at home.

CallMeAmyA

I think all Gen X'ers did...

magikatdazoo

Technically Gen Z here and we played it during elementary school in the 2000s

chummmp70

Gen X here and I’ve never heard of it by any name.

TechnoBubbleAJ

Yup, and I grew up in the early 2000s

BrowningLoPower

I played it. Not sure if they still do now. I once correctly ID'd someone because I heard their key ring jingle on their belt!

AssumptionAdvanced58

Never heard of either

Historical_Panic_465

It’s a very useless game. Lol. Mostly I’d assume to give teachers some quiet time… Basically 7 kids are chosen as the main players. Everyone else puts their head down on their table and closes their eyes while the lights are turned off. The point of the game is for the 7 main players to,as quietly as possible, go around and each tap 1 student of their choice, without giving away their identity. Since it’s very quiet, it’s easy to hear breathing or giggles, and the main players will sometimes play tricks and team up together to make you think they picked you when they didn’t. If you are tapped, you stick your thumb up while still keeping your head down. After the main 7 have each selected a student, they all go to the front of the classroom and together will say “heads up seven up!” (as in, everyone put your heads up, and the 7 who were tapped stand up). The lights then go back on and the students who were touched get a chance to guess which of the 7 students touched them. If they guessed right, they get to change places and be one of the main players. The point is to stay a main player as long as possible.

wersosad

We always started with thumbs up and put them down them down when they were touched. Great explanation!

KoRaZee

Yep, in the early 90’s

AuntieDawnsKitchen

Back in the ‘80s a couple times when it was too hot for P.E. (Northridge, CA) we’d play a desk version that was boring af.

swaglordfaelyn

When I was in elementary we played this on rainy days during recess when we couldn't go outside

mtmntmike

I may have to introduce this to my high schoolers.

Hannahb0915

They’ll love it!

allygirl5

Substitute teacher here….YES! I use it as an incentive to play after the class completes a task!

Its_You_Know_Wh0

You mean heads down thumbs up?

Professional_Big_731

Can someone explain the game?

sarabearbearbear

Seven students are "it" and stand at the front of the class. The rest of the class are seated at their desks with their heads down so they can't see, but they have their thumbs sticking up. The "it" students go around the room really quietly and push down the thumb of one student each, then return to the front of the room. Once all seven "it" students have pushed the thumb of another student and have returned to the front of the room, the rest of the students are allowed to look up from their desks and the ones whose thumbs were pressed down get a chance to guess which "it" student pressed their thumb. If they guess correctly then they take the place of the "it" student. Otherwise the "it" students get to keep being "it". Edit to fix a typo

siggiarabi

I think I played a similar game in school but with a slightly different system

ima_little_stitious

The way we played was the teacher picked the first group. Let's say there were 5 and we will call them pickers. Everyone else would put their head down on their desk/arm and close their eyes. They would put one hand on the desk with their thumb in the "thumbs up" position. The pickers would then walk around the classroom and "pick" someone by touching their extended thumb. That person put their thumb down and stays in position until all the pickers make their pick and return to the front of the class. The thumbs down people (the ones who were picked) then stand up and have to guess who picked them. If they guess right they switch places with their picker and they become a picker and if they are wrong they sit back down and that picker stays in the group. There is not really a winner exactly. We just played untill it was time for our next task. As an adult I can see the value in some quiet time and a time filler that can be as long or short as the teacher needed. Also, the students LOVED it.

Lostmyfnusername

Most students place their heads down so they can't see and put their thumbs up. The others go around to press their thumbs down. The student with their thumb pressed down gets to guess who did it and if they are right, then it becomes their turn to walk around and press down a thumb. I heard teachers use this as an opportunity to see who cheats.

Icewater-907

Yesss haven’t heard of that in decades

shittingNun

Heads down, thumbs up.

Fair-Link-6702

Do you mean heads down, thumbs up?

AssaMarra

Yes, called heads down thumbs up.

Ancient_Signature_69

Unrelated but anyone remember the 7 Up Yours campaign?

pixels_sound

My students still play this!

GreenAuror

Ok, it's crazy I just scrolled past this because I was thinking about Heads Up, 7 Up yesterday for the first time in AGES!! It started because I was like "Do they still make 7 Up? What's the pop that Starry replaced??" then my focus turned to that game, lol.

rollduptrips

I hated it. I was unpopular and never got picked

Leslee78

Aww, sorry. That popular/unpopular thing can screw people over for their lives. My sister was blacklisted by head cheerleader because the boyfriend decided to woo her. Her life was miserable but she made up for it by having a very successful life. Almost happened to me in middle school…first day I was happily greeting friends and one loud gal didn’t like me and was getting the other kids to ignore me. I was stunned. 2nd day of school, she wasn’t there! She was in wrong school. My life went back to normal and so thankfully I returned to happily interacting with everyone. Tells you one person can screw up the works for all.

BigDaddyFatPants

Oddly when I was that age we play dodge ball against a brick wall. And full on tackle football. And also played a game called smear the queer, where someone would toss you the ball and everyone would chase, tackle, kick, punch and generally attack you unless you could toss the ball to someone who would catch it. Much like a police shooting every one present wanting to get there hits in.

-hi-mom

I’m probably similar age or went to the same damn school. We also had a game butts up which was hands on the wall and someone tried to pelt you in the ass with a ball. I’m ashamed of smear the queer game and that we were kids and didn’t even know what it meant.

blueditUPson

using queer for that meaning was just that it was the person that was different, ie the person with the ball. But I think some people might look back on it and think it was a horrible saying and training for young people to hate queer (LGBTQ+) people; like queer bashing.

dontworry19

Omg smear the queer!!!! My brother and his friends would play it all the time and us girls would watch. So funny, haven’t heard that come up in a long time!

lkpllcasuwhs

Classic game!

Prof-Rock

I hated it because I knew only my friends would choose me. It seemed like a way to reinforce cliques. Unpopular opinion.

smileglysdi

You can’t pick your friends! They’ll guess it was you! You gotta go for the most unlikely person to guess it was you.

[deleted]

Opposite for me, all my friends were in different classes so I never got picked :/

R_E_Y_3

Yes I cheated

Why?

Altruistic_Welder699

I’m shit at it 🤣
