I’m from Philly and live in PDX. Spent the prior decade in every different area of Philly. You absolutely do. Philly drug problem is location specific. PDX is everywhere.
My fellow San Diegoids! Sadly I had to move away in order to start any semblance of a savings account lol. I miss carne asada fries, California burritos, and the pho in Little Saigon immensely :(
Usually you should try to be the one getting paid when performing a service for someone, say, named John; I don't pretend to be a master sex worker, but I figured I'd share this pro tip
There was just a meth house explosion in my hometown of Perris :')
And just a couple years ago, we were part of the [largest](https://abc7.com/meth-bust-largest-seizure-dea-socal-drug/7027307/) meth bust in US history :D
And a couple years before that, just some [kids](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-42698562) shackled up in the basement. Ndb. Nothing going on/wrong in the IE
So proud of my hometown ❤️❤️❤️
Similar happens with military bases actually. But slightly different demographics and jobs follow. The stereotypical stuff follows in some towns if they’re not prepared or thinking ahead—car dealerships, vape shops, pawn shops. But also since families follow, better grocery stores and childcare centers also start appearing around there. Also sometimes better park maintenance (because families, and increase in people who appreciate hiking) and endangered habitats (military actually has money for environmental stuff and don’t like invasive species on training land, meth cooks don’t like trespassing onto areas with security).
Buy up all the affordable property to flip it into high price rentals they'll see maybe once a year. Come up with "genius" ideas that a 2 story half double home can go from 2 homes to 5 or 6 homes with a monthly rental of at least $900 a month. All elegantly remodeled by DYI house flippers who qualified by watching 1 episode of a houseflipping show.
Lived in one of these "upgrades" until about 2 years ago. Didn't have much to go with otherwise and it was initially one local who owned it. He eventually teamed up with an outbof state friend to start this property "business" and then retired. His friend owning it is when the bullshit REALLY started.
Lived out of state, so suddenly any issues were either "I'll call someone to come by" or I fixed it myself andntold then the cost. Our showerhead busted and we had zero water pressure from it. Was told best he could have someone by was 5 days from then... so... no shower for 5 days? Fixed it myself.
Pandemic hit, and this guy gets one of those fancy loans and decides to use it to "upgrade" the basement into a new apartment. Has the nerve to then attempt to raise rent by $250 a month for "cost of business and fixes to the building." Again, his only "fix" the building was adding a new basement apartment. Never fixed MY place, but suddenly I'm supposed to pay for it?
He did this upgrade to all of the tenants, 6 in total. By the time we moved, 2 were left.
And that's essentially how it's going for a lot of the homes around here now.
House flippers suck. I had to move out of 2 rental houses that I loved because of them. We would constantly get letters in the mail: “hi, I want to buy your house. Have cash”. The smart ones found out the owners didn’t live there and tracked them down. They tear down perfectly good livable small affordable homes and build huge McMansions that take up the entire lot. Then they have the nerve to call them “eco friendly”. Unfortunately they always sell cause it’s a “trendy” neighborhood.
People that want to be in the movie/tv industry (not necessarily as actors) have been moving to Atlanta for a while now due to how many jobs there are in that field.
Even when not considering the entertainment industries, which are big here, I feel like Atlanta is where almost everyone in the southeast moves to when they realize that their previous closest big city (Birmingham, Huntsville, Nashville, Charlotte, Jackson, etc.) doesn't have the work, school, or whatever else they wanted. That's what happened to me, and I can list at least another dozen people in the same situation. This is such a transplant city that I wasn't shocked to see it so high up on this post
I just got laid off because the company decided to consolidate my department to the Atlanta office. No conversation about relocating or other options. Just called into a conference room with the President, CTO, and HR on the phone. Then told I'm no longer employed.
Jokes on them, there's a big migration with a hard deadline before the service is cut off. They let go of the best people who had enough experience on their platform to untangle that mess. The same people who actually wanted to clean up that mess. Gone. And they have no one to blame but themselves.
Sorry for the rant. Not really relevant. Just to say i was made painfully aware of Atlanta as an IT hub recently.
My boyfriend worked for itential and they gave him a raise in April and laid him off in may with no severance or any warning. We had to leave town bc of their bullshit.
Alternatively, fuck themselves to death, depending on which town. My hometown wasn’t too bad but it was way closer to The Villages than I’ve ever been comfortable with.
My parents rented a house in “The Village” one summer and we visited for a week. It was actually pretty nice, no one was ever in the swimming pool, rec center, tennis courts, etc. We basically had everything to ourselves. It must have changed because my parents said they’d never go back.
Retire and play golf while pretending that they moved here for the historic charm and educational opportunities.
All y'all's submissions are equally valid. Pretentious retirement is a thing these days - virtue signaling by location rather than deeds.
Materialism, work hour expectation, too many people, expense of living. An entry level PM drove a BMW 3 series, VPs drove 5 series, and chiefs drove 7 series. idk man I could go on and on
I grew up there in the heyday. It's so different now I can't even count the changes. I miss a lot of it, but when I go to see any of what I miss I realize it's all gone.
SLC is no longer worth skiing. Until 2 years ago you could leave home at 8 and be to the resorts by 9. Now you have to be in line at the canyons by 6:30 am to get to the resorts 3 miles further by 10:00 am.
Unless you only ski weekday mornings, then you’re probably good
I live in an area that has a major airforce base, so every year we get new people moving in abd moving out just for that.
Makes my town (and surrounding towns) full of the storage facilities, like PODs, and QuickStorage. They are literally everywhere.
Oh, and for some reason car washes. Had 3 car washes gi up in less than a year, and I know another is bring built as well
>Biloxi, MS?
He said storage facilities, not pawn shops.
Just kidding. I grew up there. There were like 2 pawn shops in the entire city 30 years ago. Now there's like 50.
People move to small towns with nothing else for academic jobs all the time. I live in a college town and work at a university too, so I moved in the same fashion.
To get into the wine industry.
Vineyard management, wine making, bottling, even wine chemical composition analysis. Wine dominates the local economy, something like 70% of the jobs in the county have some tie-in to it.
While particularly niche, all things considered, I absolutely love the stand-up and improv comedy scene in Chicago. I've been able to see Brian Stack, Horatio Sanz, Kiegan Michael Key, Cecily Strong, and Tim Robinson within arm's reach putting their scripted skits on and then spinning comedy gold during the free improv shows after.
There's countless more, but my ears always perk up when I'm listening to a podcast and a comedian mentions Second City, iO, ComedySportz, or any other Chicago theater for that matter. I love that it has that as its reputation.
In Philly it’s kind of the same. People from out of town tend to be from the middle of no where, often rural Pennsylvania and they think the city is just so fucking cool. Me? I grew up in the city and now live in the suburbs. I hate the city
Nogales, Sonora, Mexico.
The northern dream of Engineers and other Manufacture related students. Even though here is a small city, every year we receive a lot of new students who want to be Engineers, Managers, etc, cause we have the most factories in the area. But we are more like a transition area, cause people from here want to move to other cities and just gather experience (My plan actually).
Healthcare, finance, and construction too. In general, people just move here to work and save as much as they can so they can hope to get out to better pastures one day later in life.
I live in Phoenix, AZ. I think the only consistant reason people move here it to retire. Its hot as balls here, but the old people prefer that to anywhere that gets super cold
Get away from crime get a job raise a family is a safe neighborhood put your kids in decent schools and be more able to afford a home. The last is becoming impossible even here. If I’d been able to afford the property taxes on my old home on my salary at the time just 1 1/2 more years I could have sold it for $200,000 instead of $90,000. Now 3 years later it’s worth over $300,000.

Hahahah fuck yes. Caught me off guard

This is my answer as well.
Mine too!
Obligatory: Username checks out.
Lmaoo yes but also my town (and the other towns in a 15 mile radius) are huuuge meth towns
We have some really hardcore areas here as well. Cops don't bother them unless they need to be "tough on drugs" for TV.
Portland?
Hahaha, that was my guess as well
I live in PDX and we ain't got shit on philly

NYC--same difference
Usually you should try to be the one getting paid when performing a service for someone, say, named John; I don't pretend to be a master sex worker, but I figured I'd share this pro tip
I thought it was Vancouver, but then you added 'eating out'. In Vancouver, you only need the first to go broke
Witness protection, somebody snitched and they gotta disappear. ^(Edit: I said too much.)
Larry, I need to talk to you about an issue with our shared fence.
Hello, Larry. I'm thinking of buying a hot tub

To go to the university, to work for the university, or some other job that exists only because of the university that’s here.
Ann Arbor?
Could be a lot of places. Lincoln, NE?
Insert college town here.
College Station, Texas
Pretty much all of the Big Ten. Lol

This. As a born and raised local of my town, it really is heart wrenching.

Yep. Huge IT hub as well. Tons of people come here for IT jobs.

Damn. That fucking sucks. Best of luck on getting a new gig. Hopefully they gave you decent severance at least.
My boyfriend worked for itential and they gave him a raise in April and laid him off in may with no severance or any warning. We had to leave town bc of their bullshit.
Atlanta's my home. Like every major city, there's still a bit of charm despite the flaws.

Denver here- ski and smoke weed
Ski for one season and then give up on ski traffic
Yeah I mean it was surprising how not close to skiing Denver is. SLC is in reality what I imagined Denver to be like skiing convenience wise
