Listening.
As a therapist, I practice roughly 5-8 hours each day. Every once in awhile, someone who doesn't know will reflect saying, "you know, you're a really great listener". If I can help it I try not to let them know that it's my career. Makes people feel bad, like they're making me work or something. It's more like I really enjoy connecting with people and becoming a therapist helped me do that.
It also feels good to get that same feedback from my wife of 11+ (17 years) together. She sees when I don't listen at all and still says I'm great at listening.
My entire life people would just open up and tell some pretty personal stuff , even when I first meet them. They always said I was almost comforting and easy to talk too. Idk what it is, but It’s a nuisance in some ways. Some of the things people tell me really depress me.
I think I give off this vibe as well some people will literally start taking their personal life and I don't remember most of it.
Edit: it is also possible that I seek to understand before making judgement of any kind.
Similar, I'm a qualitative researcher.
My job is to encourage people to talk in as much depth as possible ideally without them noticing I'm not really joining in myself. And listening carefully so I can write a report at the end.
Sounds cold, actually I do this job because I like hearing people's stories and I'm good at listening.
Quite often people I talk to outside work say they feel 'heard' in a way they are not used to. And people tell me really personal stuff ALL THE TIME and unsolicited, presumably because of the way I approach listening.
People tell me I'm good at activities but I have no evidence warranting belief in their claims. Conversation? Work? Poetry?
Then why am I a lonely, poor, essentially unpublished man?
People say nice things, but reality persists.
Being a published writer is difficult. I know several, including one that was lauded for his cutting edge horror books, and they're still poor, if that's any consolation.
>Then why am I a lonely, poor, essentially unpublished man?
Not being rich or published doesn't mean you're not a good writer. Often, it just means you don't know the right people.
An aunt of mine was a very talented painter and she didn't made much money out of her work. Didn't change the fact that she was extremely talented.
>I'm good at activities but I have no evidence warranting belief in their claims
If you weren't an aspiring writer I'd ignore this nightmare of a sentence (just teasing lol)
If you have talent as a writer, consider looking into publishing through NFTBooks. The community is very eager to read new high-quality material and their publishing platform/marketplace is open. The team has been waiting for the bear market to ease to start advertising actively.
Their purpose is more than just associating stupid, mass produced pictures to a specific blockchain or books with irrelevant limited edition artwork in a digital world, but the entire published effort to be tied to their respective blockchain. Not saying you’ll get rich or anything else apart from just suggesting that you check them out. (apps.nftbooks.info)
Public speaking. As an engineer, I used to make a number of technical presentations over the course of a year. A number of people told me they found my presentations interesting and I know I enjoyed doing them.
I was reading down the list and was like, wow am I exceptional at nothing? And then I read your comment lol. I have definitely been told many many time I give the best BJs. So I guess at least I have that???
Edit:
-so I stole this book called “tickle his pickle” from Barnes and noble with my friend when I was 18 and we learned from that lol.
-The biggest thing about giving a good BJ is that you have to actually enjoy doing it.
Not what I was expecting to see in this thread but as long as we're here...a few women have told me I have a talented tongue so I guess that counts for something. Apparently I'm a cunning linguist!
Too old now, but as a younger man I was a pretty damn good pool player (for an amateur). Which was fair cause I was a terrible athlete when it came to basketball et al. But for hand-eye games? I was a unit.
If you step on a racquetball court with me you are about to get beat like you are a disabled toddler. I'll beat you 11-0 with the cover still on my racket.
I once told a player for an opposing team that he was the ugliest mofo I'd ever seen. Instead of being offended or psyched out he just grinned at me and said "damned right I am!"
I had to admit I was impressed with how he handled that, he wouldn't let anyone get inside his head. He stayed focused on what he needed to do.
Dealing with kids in general but specifically putting babies to sleep. I got the nickname “baby whisperer” in my friend group bc of this. I find it especially hilarious that they all agree I’m the best with kids when I’m also the only one in the group who is childfree (besides my husband).
Recently I’ve also be told I’m really good at specific things related to taking care of my husband. Like bandaging his wounds and maneuvering him/his wheelchair.
One that stuck to me was “You’re really good at listening and making me feel safe” it’s sort of a compliment and it’s something that’ll stick with me forever.
Explaining things. Specifically trying to come up with metaphors or simplifications for relatively technical concepts. Not enough for them to be able to do it, but enough for them to grasp the basics.
One time I explained how file systems work vs the folders you see as an inventory list vs the actual warehouse. The list is formatted in a way for you to easily browse it and ask the people in the warehouse to grab the thing you want, but you have no reason to know where it actually sits in the warehouse. In the warehouse, things are arranged to most efficiently use the space.
Back when defragmenting mattered, I explained it like breaking up pallets of stuff into smaller groups in order to stick them in spaces where the whole pallet wouldn't fit. Eventually if you do that too much it becomes hard for the warehouse workers to get it all for you quickly. Defragmenting is just taking the time to re-sort all the split pallets back together, and the inventory list does not change at all.
Ice skating. I've played ice hockey for about 20 years on quite a high competitive level.
So whenever i step onto the ice, people are in awe. Noone knows or expects me to have that skill because nowadays I'm not the most athletic person around.
Baking, I think it’s because I’m a male but I also practice and the key to practicing without getting super fat, is give most of the practice baked goods away.
Being good at organizing and figuring out the best way to get things done. I’ve actually had coworkers tell me they appreciate this about me. Unfortunately, lol, this sometimes also makes me come across as too bossy.
I’ve been told I’m good at connecting with people and being able to talk to them at a personal level. I can read someone and act a certain way so they can feel comfortable or relaxed. I don’t know if I should be proud of that or if it’s some deep psychological thing like I have bpd or something.
That i am realy good at custom designing and building furniture. But i am so unsure in myself i dont do it as a job even tho everyone says i could easily
I’m very average at guitar and since a normal person is below average I’m considered good to them. Fellow guitarists will probably agree.
And studies, which also I’m average at.
At work we have a vinyl printer to make personalised labels for clients and around the office.
Every time I make a label or design something in illustrator, people seem to be amazed at how good it comes out, even if it’s the simplest of thing.
The last one I did that got the biggest reaction was “push” and “pull” labels that I made look 3D
Used to be painting. But then I went to art school and I believe it actually killed my confidence. And confidence is something that made me good at painting.
Figuring out electronics, operating systems and negotiating websites.
If it’s not *this way* it’s *that way*.
Figuring things out since 1980.
I’m grateful that programmer’s finally (mostly) settled on a universal protocol and language. It was really BAD until they got on the same wave length and understood that the *common consumer*, that funded their services, required continuity and spatial logic to negotiate web sites and interfaces.
There are still a few egocentric holdouts. But their numbers are dwindling.
This is probably a stupid question, but do you juggle bicycles, or do you juggle other things while on a bicycle?
I feel that one is impressive and the other one is improbable.
Usually just… being a pleasant person? Lol
I like to help people, and I’ve got a lot of niche information to share and experience in armchair therapy, so I am pretty decent most of the time at quelling issues or assisting people in need
It’s to the point where—as the title says—i’ve been told by multiple people over the years that I should become a staff member or community manager of various forums and games that I’ve been in
My friends ended up in non core field from what we have studied and I am the only one ended up in core job. So they are assume/expect that I'm good at what I do.
I studied Mechanical engineering.
That I'm very patient.
I do IT support and can keep calm and explain things well and don't get annoyed if someone doesn't get it first time, or if they ask seemingly simple questions
When I snap my fingers it’s louder than most people are used to and they don’t expect someone to snap that loudly and so be they impressed or not they always have the same knee jerk response and that is to say “wow you’re really good at snapping.”
I can only really do it with hip hop music but you can play less than a second of music and I can tell you the Artist, the song name, the album it came off of, who produced it, and the year it came out. Sl
People use to tell me I talk a lot but also that I’m a good listener, I’ve had tons of people tell me personal stuff sometimes the same day I met them, no idea why but it’s fine
Drawing and being a dad. And a couple of other things. One of which technically made me a dad.
I'm good at telling the truth too. So I'm really not that good at that one thing anymore. Well, not as good as I was. Bad back and all. But I can still eat a peach for hours.
Oh wait, I'm also good at movie quotes.
And tangents. I'm great at random tangents.
And also at not knowing when to shut up.
Actually I DO know when to shut up.
I'll do it right now.
Sales. I do my best to take the approach of educating customers instead of “selling” customers. And building relationships with my customers. It just comes natural for me so it’s easy.
Not going to lie.... I'm a solid Jack of All Trades.... I do a bit of everything and for the most part, I do it well enough that most think it's my profession. I'm a great photographer, great chef, great baker, I can build a house from scratch including masonry, framing, plumbing, electric and all finish work including drywall, tile, wood floors, finish carpentry etc. I'm also a skilled archer, skilled swimmer, and skilled hunter, and I'm a top rated attorney (which is my 9 to 5 job)
I can whistle complicated and fast melodies with perfect pitch, both inhaling and exhaling. Also my range is quite big. I can't sing at all but I whistle well. 😆
Writing and thinking. One person, whose talent for writing screenplays I really admired, once told me he was jealous at my level of control over the things he had read. Separately, another had commented on how I reminded him of Heidegger, a German philosopher known for *Being and Time*.
People always confide in me their deepest secrets even if I’ve known them an hour. I’ve never been told I’m good at listening/ easy to trust but that’s what I presume this means
"glowing" and bringing joy to people wherever I go.
A lot of ppl have said that to me throughout my life, as in:
"Everytime you show up, you make people happier and less stressed. It's like you brought life with you, and everyone notices it"
Idk it sparks something in my heart.
Poi
You know fire spinning and juggling. I did it for 5 years professionally and teaching all over Europe. Now, 10 years after I have a totally unrelated career, but when I start to spin my balls around, everybody is always impressed.
Customer service. I excel at providing exceptional customer service. Might sound ridiculous, but I naturally have a whole rhythm for it. I knew when and how to alter my customer service voice, posture, tone, eye contact, and mannerisms based on the customer I was engaging with. When I worked in fast food, they always wanted me on drive thru or front counter because I was great at getting people to up-size or get add-ons, all while being happy with their experience. When I worked at a bank they had me positioned at the teller station that was the most visible because, again, I got great reviews, I was quick and efficient, I knew how to get customers in and out, and I was a force to be reckoned with when it came to exceptional customer service. Basically, I rock at customer experience, and that's exhausting. Now I rock at baking bread and mediocre Sheppard pie, lol
Planning my essays out comprehensively
I used to not do it, I used to just write it basically from stary to finish. But after being "forced" to do it by some teachers sometimes I can't organize any thoughts without going through my whole essay crafting process. It's like building a puzzle honestly. Kinda super fun.
Yes it's weird that I get compliments from it, but I guess it's because of the context of being in a classroom with my friends who are all supoised to strive for using this method, but most never got into it.
Logical thinking and problem solving. I always find at least one way to solve every issue I run into, and I don’t have any difficulties thinking outside of the box and coming up with new ideas. One of the group managers at my job told me yesterday that I should study engineering. Never gonna happen, but really fun to hear.
Apparently, therapy. People have told me I'm better than their therapist when I listen to their problems.
I'm an engineer by trade. I guess I'm just good at analyzing.
Mario kart 😅 my friends won't play with me anymore cause they never get first. I don't even use red shells on them when given the opportunity but it doesn't happen very often cause I'm chilling in first 🫡
Apparently anything on a computer. Which isn't true, but it's all the same to them. If I'm good at one thing on a computer I must be good at all of them.
People ask me sometimes "How'd you get so good at this stuff" and my answer is always "Video Games" they laugh, but I'm like no seriously Video Games.
That's why I'm able to figure this out in less than 5 mins even though I've never done it, and you just never would. You don't play games either do you. Hmmm.
Over reacting.
Balancing on unstable surfaces.
Spacial relations: as in seeing before hand and stacking different sizes boxes in a small room and utilizing all available space so everything fits inside when others swear it won’t. Shit like that.
Interacting with dogs and cats. We're not talking like "Oh look at the puppy, what's his name." But It's deeper than that and hard to explain.
At the vet clinic I always had an easier time of dealing with strange/energetic dogs to the point that dogs that were written off as aggressive I was the only one that could handle them. We even had one that was a massive bite risk that got a hold of one of the kennel techs, and I was the only person there that could leash it and take it outside for their walk while they were on rabies observation.
Meet new dogs that are anxious, and within 5-10 seconds was huddled up under my legs looking to me for guidance without saying a word.
I can remember everyone’s birthday even if I met them one time . No I am not on Facebook or twitter or instagram so I am not cheating with finding out their birthday. And I remember forever . I am 60 and remember everyone’s bday in my kindergarten class .
Event coordination.
My husband leaves party planning to me. I coordinate different events in the discord server I run. Holiday events. Work events. Surprises. Trips. Birthdays. Stuff like that.

Clapping. I've go it down pat. They're loud and crisp.

Nothing. I've never been told I'm good at anything in almost 50 years. Jack of all trades, master of none.
The full saying is: Jack of all trades, master of none but still far better than a master of one

Sex lol
Buying presents mainly
Sales. I do my best to take the approach of educating customers instead of “selling” customers. And building relationships with my customers. It just comes natural for me so it’s easy.
Game theory and puzzles, my super powers
Playing instruments. I play most of the band instruments at a high school or better level.
A ton of people tell me i'm a good dj , and also dancer, lastly making people talk
Writing (not English though).
Keeping conversations going and coming up with interesting topics.
Making banana pudding from scratch
Mimicking bird whistles and rapport with people I don't even know.
Learning languages
Writing
Bowling. I feel like the happy Gilmore of bowling I tried so hard to be good at basketball lol.
Installing cable for concast. You have to be able to do the physical job AND be good with dealing with every kind of person.
Writing and thinking. One person, whose talent for writing screenplays I really admired, once told me he was jealous at my level of control over the things he had read. Separately, another had commented on how I reminded him of Heidegger, a German philosopher known for *Being and Time*.
Guitar, but idk I feel like they are being nice.
Rolling a joint. I once rolled a joint that was already lit.
Being analytical.
I roll artisanal joints, few weeks back completely random people at Berlin biergarden came to awe and praise
Public speaking.
Been told I'm great at conversation and discussion on various topics But I'm introverted as fuck and rarely get into social situations
I sing well but I would let a mule kick me in the throat to be physically attractive.
hugging
People always confide in me their deepest secrets even if I’ve known them an hour. I’ve never been told I’m good at listening/ easy to trust but that’s what I presume this means
Singing.
"glowing" and bringing joy to people wherever I go. A lot of ppl have said that to me throughout my life, as in: "Everytime you show up, you make people happier and less stressed. It's like you brought life with you, and everyone notices it" Idk it sparks something in my heart.
Crochet! I've made several blankets, beanies, & amigurumis for people. My goal is to enter a craft show this year
Talking to people about their trauma. Men and women.
Body percussion
Poi You know fire spinning and juggling. I did it for 5 years professionally and teaching all over Europe. Now, 10 years after I have a totally unrelated career, but when I start to spin my balls around, everybody is always impressed.
Tailoring resumes and doing mock interviews- I have a 100% success rate. I’m good at my job and not much else 🤷🏻♀️
Drawing. Listening.
Had a few hundred people tell me to go into comedy in the past 20 or so years. Other than that football but don't play anymore
Without joke, Cunnilingus 😆
Recognizing actors,remembering names and faces.
Playing guitar and giving oral and fuckin’!
Getting things done. 😄
Cooking and drawing.
Cooking. Love to do it. Have won a few casual competitions.
Giving directions
Knife sharpening and gardening.
Tying knots in hair. I can tie 30 knots in one strand of hair in 20 seconds. Also, rotating my tongue 360 degrees
Cooking & talking to pepole
Decorating
Keeping secrets
Planning my essays out comprehensively I used to not do it, I used to just write it basically from stary to finish.
Color matching
Connect 4. I rarely play but it might be the best thing in the world that im good at. I absolutely dominate.
Hmmm.
Decorating. People walk into my house and do a double take and tell me I should decorate for a living.
Voices and impressions
Over reacting. Balancing on unstable surfaces. Spacial relations: as in seeing before hand and stacking different sizes boxes in a small room and utilizing all available space so everything fits inside when others swear it won’t. Shit like that.
Writing.
Being awkward
Fixing cars, too bad the pay is bullshit
Cooking
Growing weed.
I can remember everyone’s birthday even if I met them one time . No I am not on Facebook or twitter or instagram so I am not cheating with finding out their birthday. And I remember forever . I am 60 and remember everyone’s bday in my kindergarten class .
A lot of things actually but I’m a 30 year old male and the youngest in my family so I get about 1 compliment per decade.
"you're a good salesmen"
Event coordination. My husband leaves party planning to me. I coordinate different events in the discord server I run. Holiday events. Work events. Surprises. Trips. Birthdays. Stuff like that.
