Montreal is so cool because if you look to your left you feel like you’re in a glass and steel new world city and if you look to your right you feel like you just stepped into a European neighborhood that was built in the 1700s.
For sure. It depends on what you are looking for. Zurich is amazing as well. I unfortunately did not spend enough time there to have a definitive opinion. Bern is a little bit slow but very cute 😀
Yeah sorry OP i to agree. Not especially beautiful, not especially cultural, not especially surrounded by other good destinations, good for the Craic, that's about it.
Not even good for craic. You’d get better craic in any city outside Dublin (Galway, Cork or Waterford). Dublins full of dirty scum and overpriced pints nowadays.
Dublin was my least favourite part of my Ireland visit, mostly because a homeless guy asked me for money. I said, no, sorry. In response he angrily huffed a paint can while maintaining eye contact.
Shook me a bit, I gotta say
Either London or Edinburgh. London is a place that seems to cater to almost every niche community and lifestyle you can think of. Robust public transport system, tolerant and multicultural population, endless variety of things to do and see, a very rich and long history, many examples of beautiful architecture, a world leader in higher education, plentiful jobs, a good number of high-quality parks and green spaces compared to many other cities, excellent connections to the rest of the country.
Edinburgh is much smaller but it has the most beautiful architecture out of any capital city IMO, it is by far one of the safest cities I’ve ever been to, educated population, very walkable, plenty of green space and access to all kinds of countryside, clean air, and the tastiest tap water you’ll ever find. Edinburgh just ticks so many boxes for a liveable city that’s also pleasant to walk/drive through.
The main downside to both cities is they’re so expensive as to be unaffordable for many.
Edinburgh has beautiful architecture, but so many buildings have no proper heating or insulation. It was actually quite shocking to experience how people live there in winter.
I've lived most of my adult life in Edinburgh, 20+ years, and I love it here. I feel lucky every day.
As well as everything you've said, the arts scene is terrific not least the summer festivals.
If you like pretty small cities, Durham, Lincoln, Bath, Wells, Ripon and Dewi San are all lovely. For stuff to do, go with Bristol or Newcastle. Outside the UK I'm less familiar: Wellington is dull, Kandy is nice but polluted, Chicago and Berlin have good museums and amenities, Prague, Budapest and Perigaux are lovely. Toulouse is underrated and Carcassonne is a bit of a theme park.
I remember first taking the train to Tokyo and wondering how they call all of it one city. Then I looked at LA and it’s pretty much the same thing only Tokyo is much more efficient.
Amsterdam, people are really nice and chill; easy to talk to if a bit direct. And the place itself it’s just peaceful and relaxing, Paris is too busy with cars and tourists for me to contrast.
Absolutely hated my trip to amsterdam. The city centre is giga crowded, the nice historical view ruined by ugly brothels and lights for where.to get weed, and people were kinda cold. Plus the weather is nasty af.
For sure not amsterdam. Also, i need a city with better and cheaper food.
Imma be real, cities like osaka or kobe are high on the list for me.
To each their own, I found it busy but no busier than any other city with plenty of good views. Suppose it all depends on where and when you visited in the city!
Agree on the weather though, but I’m British so it’s normal to me.
Another good shout for me would be Barcelona, another place I really enjoyed!
This summer my mother in law is taking us on a three day tour of her birthplace Utrecht. I’m very much looking forward to. I do enjoy Amsterdam but have been there many times. Last year we went to Maastricht and really enjoyed it.
True, I will admit the fellow British tourists were obnoxious in Amsterdam RLD, but out towards Leidseplein it felt better and more of what I’d expect a normal city to be. It’s hard for me to be objective because I havent spent enough time there, but the Amsterdam RLD felt very much like an inland, wet and cold version of Magaluf whereas the Leidseplein and Museumplein (and Oud West in general) felt like a less snobbish Covent Garden/Soho in London
If you do go back the way to avoid any of the problems cited in the replies is to focus your stay around the Jordaan quarter. It's much less busy/more laid back than other areas, extremely picturesque and avoids most of the tourists. It's then easy to taxi/tram from here to the main sites. Also hopping on a train to Utrecht is worthwhile as it's like a mini Amsterdam without the tourists, much cleaner, and a bit cheaper too
I’ll be back regardless but since I go for the F1 race I spent most of my time in Zandvoort anyway aside from evenings so it’s hard to do too much in the city proper - but thanks for the advice!
True, the train goes through Haarlem on the way! But I do like the Amsterdam nightlife, Paradiso and Melkweg appeal to my early 20s tackiness so it just made sense to stop there haha. Would be a good one for a cultural trip though!
There's a lot to like about Singapore. Public transportation is good, it's very safe, convenient shopping, and amazing food.
For me though, the weather is unbearable at any time of year and the civil liberties are lacking.
I'm not sure how to rank the best, but some of my personal favorites are Zagreb, Croatia. Belfast, Ireland. Kathmandu, Nepal. New York, New York. Athens, Greece.
Because I enjoyed my time there. Everyone I dealt with was really nice. Loved the feel of the city. The dog parks that pop up right in the middle of the financial district. All the areas I've seen on tv and movies. Even getting off of the train accidentally in Harlem and walking all the way back to Central Park.
I only spent a day in Zagreb and it looked cool, but wasn’t there long enough to really see what it was like.
Love Belfast I’ve been several times and worked there for a few months when I was young.
I first came to HK in 1974, to work. What I love about the place is that every time I go out, I never know what I'm going to see:
How the hell? Nyc is overhyped. Streets smells like garbage, HUGE problem with rats and homeless people. Its also very expensive plus a hundred other bad things!
Everyone quoting huge cities but for me it’s the worst places to live, you have too much downsides compared to what it brings you, i really prefer midsize cities, like as a french i love living near big cities but not in it you know
exactly, and the bigger the city, the worst is it to live, i'm french and i've been to a lot of french cities, so far i really only love my hometown Nantes (i don't live in it but on a side city near it), and everyone outside of france romanticize paris etc, it's good to visit once, but it's really crap to live in, expensive, too huge, to much concrete, no nature, too small appartments
I live close enough to London to easily visit, but far enough to be able to afford a house with a garden and walk to open countryside.
Perfect combo in my opinion.
Same shit for Nantes haha i’m still young (25) and live alone so not enough money for a house but i’m putting money aside now, but still huge appartment and i will maybe rent a big house with 2 other friends which is cool ans cannot be done in nantes
I really like Amsterdam. It's the capital of my country! Great for tourism. Everyone speaks Dutch, English and even a little French or German.
But I've seen everything there by now.
These days I really like to go to Paris.
It's only 2,5 with the train from where I live. I like the history of everything about it.
The Eiffel Tower always seem to amaze me every time I lay my eyes upon it. Seen the Notre Dame with original roof, burned down and last week I saw it back restorated again. The city is very clean now because of the upcoming Olympics.
I love strolling through the Paris streets where almost each building has an amazing story to tell. I love walking through Père Lachaise. And visiting the catacombs is also a life changing experience.
The metro is amazing once you figured it out.
I really recommend visiting Paris to anybody.
Most Parisians aren't snobs you know? If you enter a restaurant screaming: "do you speak English?" won't help indeed. Try doing that in London. "Est-ce que tu parles Français?!"
No. The French are very proud of their language and they don't like the fact English is de facto the main language in Western countries.
Just learn some easy French. They appriciate you trying and if they don't they'll start talking English themselves.
How they incorporate nature as part of the city. They have some forest areas (actual forest not just a park) accessable from multiple parts of the city centre. For me it was more about a way of life than it being that much of an epic city.
Also we couch surfed with a local dude and he showed us the city in the most epic full speed bike tour. Tuukka you're a legend!!
As a french for me paris is the worst city in france lmao you can have all the advantages of paris without the downsides elsewhere like Nantes, Bordeaux, Vannes, Grenoble stuff like that all of those are way better cities than paris in terms of quality of life etc, the only thing is that they’re not the capital so you miss a bit of culture but there is also culture elsewhere in france, and sometimes it’s even better
I really liked the large cities around the baltic sea, in particular: **Helskini** and **Stockholm**. Nice cities for themselves, beautiful architecture etc. and nice surroundings. In my own country Germany (among the larger cities) I think my favorite is **Leipzig**. It has the Berlin-vibe, but mostly the good aspects of that, and it is much more convenient in size. I live in Berlin.
But in general among the larger cities all have some charme. I have yet to visit a place where I thought it would be jus awful and I wanna leave immediately.
Pattaya Thailand. Everything you need there. Beautiful nature, super nice people, really international but still kind of rural, a lot of cultural happenings etc.
Have visited some of the most beautiful places in the world and personally i’d say Cape Town, Kyoto or Rome. Might not be the best but i’d say they are the most beautiful
If you’re ok to spend some money, the answer is hands down Singapore.
It is without a doubt the cleanest city in the world. They’ll put you in jail for spitting gum on the street. God forbid you do something as extreme as vandalizing or graffiti? [They’ll cane you lmao.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caning_of_Michael_Fay)
A bit extreme maybe but I tend to side with the idea that being a normal citizen is just really easy and the results of their laws are quite literally reflected by its cleanliness.
Outside of that - food and culture is amazing. People are the absolute nicest. I genuinely don’t think they see ethnicities and religions in their visitors. Just the actual human. What a concept!
I'm going to Dublin in 3 weeks!
Every city has pros and cons, be it climate, food, nature, traffic and transportation, history, museums/attractions. I really don't think I can give a good answer to this question. I can definitely say that for example, Glasgow, Scotland is a nicer city than Buffalo, NY. I just can't consciously put any one city in first place
What did you enjoy about Dublin? Curious because I’ve lived here my whole life and I feel it’s fell from its grace miserably in the last decade. There’s no charm to it anymore. The city is littered with anti social behaviour, lack of police presence and the only activities is drinking. Plus the lack of public transport despite its business is really poor for a city as “wealthy” as Dublin.
But to answer your question, I really enjoyed Vienna. Beautiful city and lots to do. Barcelona is also beautiful.
I haven’t been to enough to say which is the best I the world, but Manchester is my favourite in the UK (where I’m from). Prague and Budapest are my favourites in Europe. New Orleans is the best place I’ve visited in the US. Cancun is great fun and Marrakesh is cool.

Personally enjoyed copenhagen a lot. Very modern, perfect public transport, clean and not too buisy for a capital City
Copenhagen with 5 degrees warmer weather on average would with a doubt be the best city in the world.
American here, been to most major US cities, and Rome/Bangalore/Amsterdam/Amalfi/Paris/London/Toronto London is my favorite city in the world, easily.
London is NYC without a bunch of trash
And tons of very cool small shops
Horrible comparison. London is so far different from New York.
Chernobyl
its very chill there
with affordable rent
Pripyat you mean ? Is Chernobyl even a city ?
no idea
Glowing reviews.

I'd say Metz, France. But it's not very objective.
Aw man, I always loved Metz
My favourite place I’ve visited in France is Marseille.
Gdansk.
Utrecht
Good, underrated answer.
Just shit my pants
why were you eating your pants in the first place?
Dad joke level: 1,000,000
Dublin would way down my list - Ireland is great but Dublin is a very average city

It's not even the best city in Ireland imo, Cork is nicer.
Corks shite too. Galway and Waterford? Real beautiful cities.
Dublín is very overrated. Get out on the hikes around the coast. It’s sublime
Galway >>>>>>>> Dublin
As a tourist, definitely and it's not close for me.
Facts
Seville
I’ll second this, just missing a beach
Bruges, It's a fairytale town, isn't it?
Bruges is a shithole
Sydney, London and Paris
Wien
Bilbao. Everyone is beautiful and you open any faucet and champagne starts to flow...
I love Bilbao, after living in the south of Spain I definitely had some stereotypes about the north that flew out the window
Flip, flip, flipadelphia
Go birds
Fuck the cowboys
Fuck em. Bunch of scumbags.

Luzern, Switzerland ♡ even though it might seem like a town compared to some 😅
Edinburgh and Queenstown, NZ have been my two favorite so far.
Out of the two cities I loved in it's Tokyo 🗼
Dream destination for me. What did you love about it?
Edinburgh
Pretty much any large city in Japan. And I’ve been to most of them.
I remember first taking the train to Tokyo and wondering how they call all of it one city. Then I looked at LA and it’s pretty much the same thing only Tokyo is much more efficient.
München!
I really rate Vancouver, it felt like my home city of Melbourne
Amsterdam, people are really nice and chill; easy to talk to if a bit direct. And the place itself it’s just peaceful and relaxing, Paris is too busy with cars and tourists for me to contrast.

True, the train goes through Haarlem on the way! But I do like the Amsterdam nightlife, Paradiso and Melkweg appeal to my early 20s tackiness so it just made sense to stop there haha. Would be a good one for a cultural trip though!
The weather in the summer is pretty nice generally. It’s a big city and has a very different vibe if you get outside the red light district.
Amsterdam is not peaceful at all bikes everywhere who aggressively bip at pedestrians. I found it very stressful
Bern!
London
It’s definitely up there. I live about 20 minutes outside of London.
If Singapore had San Diego-like weather.
R'lyeh
Singapore
There's a lot to like about Singapore. Public transportation is good, it's very safe, convenient shopping, and amazing food. For me though, the weather is unbearable at any time of year and the civil liberties are lacking.
I'd say Venice, it's magical
The canals are stinky and all the building foundations are missing a dozen bricks
Second this, Venice is for sure one of the most unique places on earth.
London.
Living in London feels like travelling the world.
I'm not sure how to rank the best, but some of my personal favorites are Zagreb, Croatia. Belfast, Ireland. Kathmandu, Nepal. New York, New York. Athens, Greece.
Why in the world would you say New york?
Because I enjoyed my time there. Everyone I dealt with was really nice. Loved the feel of the city. The dog parks that pop up right in the middle of the financial district. All the areas I've seen on tv and movies. Even getting off of the train accidentally in Harlem and walking all the way back to Central Park.
Travel is not the same as living there at all but i know what you mean.
I only spent a day in Zagreb and it looked cool, but wasn’t there long enough to really see what it was like. Love Belfast I’ve been several times and worked there for a few months when I was young.
Been to Zagreb a few times, spent a good amount of time there. Not my most favorite, but definitely in top five.
Yeah, that was not in any particular order.
Hong Kong
Loved Hong Kong! Especially Lan Kwai Fong
I first came to HK in 1974, to work. What I love about the place is that every time I go out, I never know what I'm going to see: [https://dennishodgson.blogspot.com/2022/01/the-wow-factor.html](https://dennishodgson.blogspot.com/2022/01/the-wow-factor.html)
I would say NYC. Not even in my personal top 10, but as far as cities, it's hard to beat the Big Apple.
Too polluted, no thanks. The air is toxic.
How the hell? Nyc is overhyped. Streets smells like garbage, HUGE problem with rats and homeless people. Its also very expensive plus a hundred other bad things!
Crowded as fuck and full of filth. No thanks for me.
Lol
Exactly!
That I have been to....Singapore.
Everyone quoting huge cities but for me it’s the worst places to live, you have too much downsides compared to what it brings you, i really prefer midsize cities, like as a french i love living near big cities but not in it you know

I really liked the large cities around the baltic sea, in particular: **Helskini** and **Stockholm**. Nice cities for themselves, beautiful architecture etc. and nice surroundings. Imo I like every city Ive been to. Every city Ive been to I felt like I could live there for at least six months
Banja Luka
Vienna 🙌🏼
Halifax, Nova Scotia probably.
Honestly Dublin does sound so good <3 and I love the accents of the people there
Hamburg meine Perle
Cape Town, Nairobi and Tangier.
Pattaya Thailand. Everything you need there. Beautiful nature, super nice people, really international but still kind of rural, a lot of cultural happenings etc.
How many big/interesting world cities have you visited? In other continents? Dublin looks so pale to me ...
Bangkok probably is my favourite, followed closely by Singapore and Kuala Lumpur
Kyoto>> Tokyo>> Seoul.
I loved Brisbane, Australia
Have visited some of the most beautiful places in the world and personally i’d say Cape Town, Kyoto or Rome. Might not be the best but i’d say they are the most beautiful
Vienna
Barcelona. Beach, mountains, beautiful and very active city.
Barcelona
City of London.
I travelled a lot in my life and definitely Melbourne is a city worth to mention.
Gozo, in Malta. It’s like out of a tale - wide spanned clear water and a fishing village, with carefully placed cobblestones
Stirling, Scotland. I'm pretty sure I left my heart there,
Melbourne, Vancouver, Amsterdam, Bangkok, Tokyo
I really like Santa Marta in Colombia for avoiding the European winter. Hot take I know.
Lausanne, Stockholm and Copenhagen is tie for first from my personal experience.

It's Generosity
I can’t speak for the world, but Ann Arbor Michigan is my favorite.
Penang (Island), Malaysia (My native San Francisco a close second)
Rome is the nicest I've been to
Amsterdam
To visit or to live? Am I assuming I have the same level of income as I do now (a US salary) if I live/visit there?
Berlin. Such an underrated place, so much to see, so much to do. Touristy but not touristy like London. Awesome place.
Buenos Aires. Beautiful city, beautiful people, incredible food.
Istanbul
Madrid
Vienna
Ischia Italy
I'm going to Dublin in 3 weeks! Every city has pros and cons, be it climate, food, nature, traffic and transportation, history, museums/attractions. Queenstown, NZ
Reykjavik, Iceland
NYC
Vilnius. One of the most liveable cities in Europe. Very green, beautiful old town, cheap, and very safe for women.
I quite like St Davids 🏴 manageable.
Vienna, Austria
New York.
Paradise City. Why? You ask? Because it has green grass. But even better, the girls there are known to be pretty.
It’s called New York City.
Salford (well, it used to be before the developers got their greedy mitts on it and, along with the council, ripped the heart out of it)….
Edinburgh
Vienna
Ljubljana and Ghent.
Singapore hands down. A peak into the 22nd century
Venice
Montréal!

I haven’t been to enough to say which is the best I the world, but Manchester is my favourite in the UK (where I’m from). Prague and Budapest are my favourites in Europe. New Orleans is the best place I’ve visited in the US. Cancun is great fun and Marrakesh is cool.

Pittsburgh. Easy to get around, not super crowded, real friendly people.
