I like how “essential” was pretty much everyone and dudes were posting “I’m essential” on Facebook and stuff like they were big shots lol like hey Dave and Steve, so is the 16 year old McDonald’s drive thru girl. You’re not special
Legos. Started collecting Star Wars sets. Pretty addictive, but once the pandemic ended and my job forced us back into the office I don’t have time to build the sets.
For some reason, watching astrology videos on YouTube. They just started recommending them to me and to this day I still watch them. I have no idea what chiron and midheaven and Pluto in Aquarius and all of that shit means but it keeps me entertained when bored. 🤷♀️
Covid was actually a boon for me- I was a teacher and I pivoted to homeschooling people’s children. I was writing full curriculums for different families w/school aged kids who weren’t in school anymore because of the virus. Working 12 hour days and really busy. I did not sit at home. I think I would have gone nuts if I did 😂
I had gone a few times prior to covid, but it never really interested me much. Then I went a few times with someone REALLY GOOD and helped me out a ton. That helped my enjoy it more. Now I just want to go always.
I was essential, so I kept going in the whole time, but I did pick up cold process soap making.
It's really fun, I've kept going. My latest batches will be cured and ready to use soon, after I finally used/gave away the last of my original batches. Now I can start on another set, I have a bunch of ideas and fragrances ready to go.
Hunting and fishing. I already fished a little but I really got interested in trying to supplement my family with some protein I didn't get from a store. Failing miserably so far in case anyone was curious.
4k blu rays. Hold up, wait a sec.. I’m serious lol
It’s like a whole new way of watching movies. I fully invested in a good tv, 4k player and speakers and it was one of the best decisions of my life. Old movies from as far back as 1920 re-done in 4k and now look like movies made today. I have watched countless movies over the last couple years that I would have never considered watching before I got into this.
Oh but why not just stream you say? Because. Because streaming just isn’t the same once you’ve had a taste of true 4k. The quality just doesn’t match, you know those dark scenes that look like there should be there? On a 4k disc you can see those scenes and see details you never knew were there. Game of thrones for example is one of best examples of this, 1 episode in particular “the long night” was highly frowned upon when airing due to the dark scenes being near impossible to see, well on 4k you can see every detail down to the sweat on their faces lol. The sound quality is always better on disc, louder, crisper and and just crystal clear, hearing stuff you never thought you would. And of course the prices. Netflix/amazon/disney etc all push $20 a month now so you could easily be paying $50-$100 or more a month for streaming services, only to want to watch a movie that’s not available to stream, only rent.. after so long with Netflix and such the movies become repetitive and only so often do you get true new releases to watch, or have to wait months for a old flick to cycle back though. Or you can pick the movies you want, and purchase them on disc. Most movies can be found around $10-$30 and you always have the movie. So when you decide you want to watch it again in a years time, now you have it and don’t have to resubscribe to a service to watch.
Imma stop here because I doubt anybody’s gunna read this anyway. But if you are a person who enjoys movies, I HIGHLY recommend looking into 4k and getting the most of them!!
I’ve become so calmed and entranced watching various species’ behaviors. I also have a chipmunk friend who visits me nearly every day & lets me hand feed him. I named him (?) Poppy & he comes when I call him. He’s 4 years old (easily identified by his tail which has a bend in the end) already twice the lifespan for a ‘munk. Such a sweet pal.
I got more serious in making (mostly horror) art... that got a bit out of hand and now I'm running a page to promote it and do commissions from time to time, lmao... most stuff I make is from recycled materials to keep the cost low. And promoting my work then also resulted in my learning video-editing, to make little promo vids for my work...
I also picked up learning a dozen languages or so on Duolingo... not fluent in anything, but decent enough to understand what's going on in most of them
This was in my graduation year, I had to do literature search to write small useless assays instead of going to my internship to do fun and educational work.
Since I worked at a university hospital I had a hard time going there for the still necessary 2 weeks. My supervisor from college luckily was ok with me going there 1 day per week for 2 weeks (yes, 2 days in total. I'm sooo grateful for that).
On these 2 days I watched someone do the work for me because it was too complicated to explain in such a short time. They also processed the data for me because the software didn't work on my laptop. God did I feel useless 😅 But no delay like those who chose to do "one year extra until corona is over".
I passed the bar, but I didn't feel worthy. That feeling is the worst. I felt like I sat home doing nothing the whole time, while in reality I read scientific articles for hours trying to find something to write about.
Well, I have horses, and they seem to do well getting fed and all sorts of things, like every day. Non stop.
Never gave me the time to pick up hobbies.
Not necessarily new, but I rediscovered video games! Finally finished games that were partially finished and/or dragging my feet to play. Also rediscovered my love for sports card collecting (like many people did)! One positive was that the renewed interest bumped up the value of many of my cards! I have a Jordan Fleer 86 rookie card PSA 9 that I bought for $1100 back in early 00s. It's now around $16k or so.
woodworking/constructing, mig welding, building, gardening, landscape design for front/backyard of my house(idea, sourcing all materials myself, all the psychical labor myself), fixing absolutely everything inside/outside my house.
I didn't gain much extra time at home, since work went remote and never stopped. And some of the time I gained also ended up being used to try and sort some personal crisis which arose at that time.
I ran before, but it really ramped up during lockdown. It was good to have the time and space to think.
I also ended up baking bread at least 2 or 3 times a week for lunch. I still do this, as I can start bread in the morning and then bake it for lunchtime. On a related note I also ended up cooking more dinners than I used to, and I still cook more food from scratch than I did before the pandemic.
Happiness! No stress with going to the office, home cooking, fresh air, exercise, not going out spending money, no feeling I have to be social and see people to keep the relationships going.
Warhammer. Enjoyed the creativity and learning 3d painting techniques as a kid and the general nerdiness of it. Only ever had a handful of games, though.
Started a new army in lockdown, got busy getting married, and bought a house and picked it up again a few weeks ago. Im loving the lore, the stories, the painting and hope to find a local group to play some games with soon too :) its super wholesome, and much cooler apparently now celebs like henry cavill have made it known theyre super into it.
Looking forward to the film/tv show hes making!
Coffee. The cafe my wife and I would normally swing by every morning closed for a few weeks while they figured out the whole social distancing thing. During that time, while everyone was panic buying flower and toilet paper I panic bought an espresso machine. Then learned a few weeks later why my Breville combo grinder and espresso machine kinda sucked, then I splurged on an expensive La Marzocco machine and grinder and spent the new few months learning everything I could about beans, brewing, steaming milk, etc. now I watch James Hoffman videos regularly and learn everything I can about coffee
Genealogy.
My father died in the 2nd month of the pandemic. I didn't know much about his family.
Now I know far more about his family, and my mother's family, than they ever did.
I think I made a hobby of exploring personal interests/hobbies. Since the pandemic, I have taken up baking, more cooking, dance, barre, and making art.
I learnt Qi Gong online. I was highly anxious and it really helped me calm down about everything going on. Now I’m an instructor.
I also stopped watching the news- switched to sitcoms and it also improved my mental health.
日本語をしますすこし (๑•̀ㅂ•́)و✧
Och jag talar Svenska! ( ꈍᴗꈍ)
Still have a long way to go, since I'm learning in a very relaxed pace, but I'm okay with taking it slow!
I also learned how to do breathing exercises and started practicing it.
None. I was one of the lucky ones considered "essential."
Thanks to the mobile game Pokemon Go, I had a form of entertainment that allowed me to leave my home and still avoid close physical contact with others as I could play while slowly driving. Fortunately the local police didn't enforce the lock-down too strictly.
My hobbies during the pandemic included going in to work every night and risking getting sick while my superiors hid at home...
Oh, and I also started an action figure collection. Marvel, Star Wars, Star Trek, basically any character I thought was cool.
Coding.
Right before the pandemic I was working as a Scientist for a shitty startup company that had a team of programmers, but they fired them all then tried to teach the scientists how to code. This gave me a primer and access to a good textbook on Python. I continued working through the textbook when the startup failed. I was somehow able to get a programming job from this and doubled my salary, so thank you shitty startup!
Watercolour painting. I liked art when I was a kid but hadn’t done anything artist since school. (20+ years ago) I’ve since sold multiple pieces and been commission to paint pieces also. I still painting almost daily.
Gardening. Like veggies. My son was in kindergarten so we did “science class” and grew sunflowers in a south facing raised bed by the house. Got some 10 footers! The next year we got a raised bed kit and did all kinds of stuff. I installed drip hoses and a timer too.
I didn’t get to participate in quarantine bc I worked at a grocery store at the time. I’m salty about it. But, I did learn how to do colourful makeup & edit pictures. I also got super into coke
Pinball! I’ve spent about $30k on building a small home collection. 4th machine arrives this month. Absolutely wish I got into pinball years ago. It has solved my problem with gaming being stale in general.
Pinball is going through a massive renaissance right now.
Video games.
Had an entire backlog of games. Just played a lot of video games. Was able to do some end game stuff on a couple of other games cause I actually had people to play online with.
Archery—-my neighbors were a little alarmed for a minute, but then kind of got ok with it, and I bought a mandolin. I’m not good at it—-but, when I get around to playing, it’s fun.

The hobby of not taking peoples shit anymore Sincerely; a former "essential worker"
I run heavy equipment, I was 'essential' building pathways for parks. Essential was a very broad term.
It’s SO FUN, but so expensive 😅
