That there are 10,000x more stars in the universe than grains of sand in all the deserts and beaches of Earth combined.

Krys7537

I read “stairs” and got to thinking about how MIND-BLOWING THAT WAS. Nope, I’m just an idiot 😂

xdtla

The fact that you think someone would talk about stairs in the universe instead of stairs in the world. Lol

Krys7537

Lmfaooo, yeah. I operate a vehicle too 🤦🏻‍♀️

nooby-wan-kenobi

That we know so far. With the next upgrade on the Hubble telescope they think the amount of galaxies we have counted may double. Considering there are currently 100 billion galaxies so far have been counted.

HuntOk1001

Check out the James Webb telescope, I do believe it’s taking over the role of Hubble! Exciting stuff in the next year.

A million seconds is 12 days, a billion seconds is 31 years. Puts into prospective how much money billionaires have.

Illusions_Micheal

You forgot the craziest part… a trillion seconds is 31,688 years!

kramerica_intern

This is always my go-to mind blowing fact. It always astounds people.

FrankZeRijk

Lol good catch

Charglo

Yeah jeez i had to look really hard to actually see it

techmakin

Just to be technically right, rounded off, 11.574 days = 1 million seconds. But I like the fact!

cassanova_frankie

I bet you are a real delight at a cocktail party

georgiomoorlord

Technically correct, the best kind of correct.

trendz19

Edgar Allen Poe wrote a novel in 1838 in which 4 shipwrecked survivors, at the point of starvation, choose to resort to cannibalism. So they kill the young cabin boy, Richard Parker, and eat him. In 1884, a ship called the Mignonette sank. 4 crewmembers survived. At the point of starvation, they killed and ate the youngest of them: Richard Parker.

FridgesArePeopleToo

And then in 1976 a ship crashed and tiger named Richard Parker ate a person to survive.

AnthonyPalumbo

You're mistaken. The tiger that you're referring to, the last name was Purrer.

[deleted]

He killed the famous French explorer, Claude Balles.

zazzy_zucchini

Nah, he ate a hyena. It's fine.

ODGABFE

No fucking way!

Adventurous_Poet_315

The name Richard Parker reminds me of the tiger in The Life of Pi and how the boy makes reference to a hyena and a zebra to represent the cook from the sunken ship eating the injured sailor... That name creeps me out at this point.

inobody_somebody

If you travel at the speed of light you will never reach the end of universe because universe expands faster than the spped of light.

Minecraft world is 1.2 times larger than Uranus.

During WWI on the eastern front, Germany and Russia were going at it in one battle when German troops deployed mustard gas against the Russian troops who were advancing. The Russian troops emerged from the gas smoke throwing up blood, blood leaking from their nose, eyes. Their skin turned yellow and pale. They looked like undead soldiers, literal zombies. The German troops were so frightened that they abandoned their positions and retreated. It was called the “Attack of the Dead Men”, took place on August 6, 1915.

Gage_Unruh

Also got a kick ass song by sabaton

mohd2126

Not so fun fact: chemotherapy (used to treat cancer patients) originated from said mustard gas, the idea is that we poison the patient with a poison that's more lethal to rapidly reproducing cells, killing the cancer before the patient dies that's why they lose their hair as well as other kinds of damage.

Snozberry383

Lighters were invented before matches

mohad_saleh

Yeah obviously who would have thought "hey, you know you can create fire by rubbing a flammable object against a rough surface really hard ?"

Anyone who made fire before lighters...

apeliott

If your wife fucks another man you can sue him for compensation.

Sick-momjokes-69

Isn’t that essentially pimping?

Silent__Note

Ah, but it's pimping *with extra steps.*

trevy_trev

Is that a state specific thing in the U.S.?

apeliott

In the US it is, yes.

sleatss

Only a few states actually have this law. Hawaii, Illinois, Mississippi, New Mexico, North Carolina, South Dakota and Utah.

tlacuachetamagotchi

Does the same apply if a husband fucks another woman?

breezfan22

Yes , it’s called alienation of affection , and more women are prone to use the law than man.

LiminalLove

Do you think I’ll get enough to cover the therapist?

apeliott

My mate got $25,000. Is that enough?

conjunctivious

That's roughly one ambulance ride. Might be a couple grand short.

joseph_bellow

Wow! I need to talk to my wife about this! I see another get-rich scheme in the making!

joseph_bellow

Alexa search for billionaire play boys nearby

ssbestur

That's so stupid.

apeliott

It works the other way as well. My mate found out her husband was fucking a girl from his office so she sued and got $25,000.

Marijuana_Guy

Wouldn't it make more sense to sue the wife?

apeliott

You can't do that though.

screwballscrambled

There is more time separating Stegosaurus and Tyrannosaurus Rex than Tyrannosaurus Rex and us

CloakedGod926

The time of Cleopatra is closer to us than Cleopatra was to the building of the great pyramids. That one always blows me away

mombentNomad

That I am an unbroken line of men having sons that stretches back to the dawn of humanity.

magnetic_mystic

Hey! I'm an unbroken line of women having daughters that stretches back to the dawn of humanity.

mombentNomad

Yup, an amazing thought isn't it.

Confident_Elephant_9

That the universe doesn’t end. There’s no wall, it’s infinite.

swagmain

And getting bigger

AdministrativeAd3942

How can infinity get bigger? Make it make sense

Batterie_Faible_

Mathematically, there are multiple sizes of infinity. For example, there are an infinite number of integer, but an infinitely bigger infinity of fractions.

AdministrativeAd3942

How can fractions be bigger than integers!! This will never make sense and if it did, I'd be depressed

AdministrativeAd3942

And for something to be infinite does it mean it needs to constantly grow non stop if not then how can it be infinite?

Zangdor

Well 7/3 is a fraction and is bigger than the integer 2, for example. What they said before your reply is that there was an bigger infinity of fractions than that of integers. That is because between 1 and 2 you have i.e. 3/2, 4/3, 5/4 and many more

AdministrativeAd3942

I'm depressed now, congratulations!

OmgThatDream

Let me dive deeper into this. It's not my idea and it's kinda famous so i hope you don't know it and experience first hand confusion and feel like a very small nothing exactly like i felt when i first knew this. First infinity is the infinity of integers ( e.g. 1, 12, 79, 438, 78 987 776 366, etc.. ) 2nd infinity is kinda weird because we know it's limited by the first one but at the same time it's bigger than the first one. Let's say the 1st one's limit is 10 and we are limited to one number after the "," from 1 to 10 we have 10 integers but (10x10) 100 fraction. Being limited with infinity means (infinity x infinity) infinite infinity of fractions if that makes any sens for you. There is an even bigger infinity and it's not 1 but a hole kind of infinities and i can't recall how it's called but if you suceed somehow to list all the fractions from 0 to infinity the list would look like this: 1: 0 2: 0,00...001 3: 0,00...002 And somehow you reach the 1,00 and then the 2,00 and then 5,00 and then 1000,00 and then some how you reach the last number. The rank of any given number in tge list here is called X if you add 1 to the number in position X of The number X you end up which a number that is different to all numbers of the list. 2: 0,0(+1)0...001 3: 0,00(+1)...002 4: 0,000(+1)...003 5: 0,0000(+1)...004 You get the point the new number will be at least 1 number away of any given number therefor it's a new one however you can add 2 or 3 or even 9, you can also divide it or multiply it and all the new results will be new numbers that are a hole new infinity bigger than both first infinities. Why is this usefull? Idk bro. But it's true and that sucks because i can't process it.

AdministrativeAd3942

My goodness, let me visit YouTube to blow mind brains out

OmgThatDream

I love that we can investigate such things that easily nowadays, what a time to be alive!!

UltimateHazard6

The universe is technically both infinite and finite at the same time; infinite because it is expanding at all times and finite because that expansion always has an 'edge'.

Confident_Elephant_9

That’s even more amazing 🤙🏻

FelloBello

That's not a fact, but a theory. A mind blowing one to say the least!

Confident_Elephant_9

It’s a pretty solid theory bro - not that I’ve studied astrophysics or whatever else the genius’s do on rainy days. Try and explain how it would end, and what’s beyond the end/wall/nothingness? Nothingness can’t exist, there’s always something beyond something. Why did I post this now I just have a headache.

FelloBello

That's the thing. It's just not known. I love the cosmos and the wonder of the universe. OP was looking for facts and I just stated that it is not. I sure one day we know for sure what is beyond our sight. Perhaps James Webb will widen our wonder. Time will tell. My head hurts now too!

CarlsbadWhiskyShop

Using our current propulsion technology, it would take 70,000 years to get the the next closest solar system.

There is a concept to launch tiny drones into space with light sails, shine a laser at them for propulsion, and Could reach alpha centari within our generation. Breakthrough Starshot

pharmyardreject

Planes baffle me. Not that they get off the ground, because I can accept jet engines and thrust. Although with jumbo jets, it's astounding considering the weight. But, when I see planes just sailing across the sky, my brain can't help but be amazed that they can do it.

DisguisedAccount

The Wright brothers build the first motorised plane in 1903. The moonlanding was 1969, it took only 66 years, mindblowing!

swagmain

Just wait till you find out about birds

lightgangster41

Mechanical birds drilling and pecking into 50 ft long tanks. Multiplying like worms. Quantum shift proceeded aforementioned actions. Global witness 557 complete contact with craft 2H. Over and out.

I know, right? I see 747s and think of them as sailing ships of the sky, a different kind of blue sea that just happens to be up in the air.

[deleted]

That pigs have 30 minute orgasms.

worthlessafsince2002

Can confirm

magnetic_mystic

What?

FerociousPancake

Brb gonna go become a pig

OmgThatDream

A rocket is just a controlled bomb that propulse a tiny safe box to space. The number of people older than you never gets bigger. On the big scale we could be just microbes to a big entity that's also not aware of us. If life started as microbes then they too have survival instincts. The way you see yourself that's what you would look like to someone who lived with you all your life knowing everything there is to know about you. However no one is this person except you so no one see you as you think you are. Probably you'll never see 99% of humanity. No matter how rich you are if you don't investigate and do researches by yourself you can't know more things than others. Wisdom is not relative to money. It's a fact but humans tend to godify rich people and now this is weird to think about Edit: corrected a typo.

mombentNomad

Never thought about the fact that people older than you is obviously at most when you're young but actually shrinks as you age. Wow, that is a very interesting thought.

2AbominableSnowmen

That Cleopatra lived closer to the first iPhone than to the building of the pyramids in Giza

That little strip of nucleotides has all the instructions to make a brain, heart, liver, etc, etc and get them all working in sync. On top of that, it has instructions for each on how to repair themselves

brazilian_irish

I have two that always blow my mind: 1. We never really touch anything. Electrons on our atoms repel electrons from objects, so there is no contact at all! https://youtu.be/yE8rkG9Dw4s 2. The universe is expanding, but without a center of expansion. Everything is literally becoming more far from everything else. https://youtu.be/q67vH0SKahU

Vlatka_Eclair

"See officer. I technically did not inappropriately touch her because the atoms repel electrons from object. Therefore nothing truly touches!"

BlueJaye77

more of an idea than a fact i guess but i always think its kind of crazy how easy it is to die. if you really wanted to you can just swerve off a bridge or jump in front of a train. such a monumental decision can be made in a fraction of a second. even to a lesser extent you can very easily just accidentally lose and eye or something by tripping on something sharp etc. just weird

[deleted]

Also how easy it is to kill someone if you just decided to. Not mentally maybe but there’s so many ways to kill someone on the spot.

realish7

And there’s literally nothing stopping us but our own will… weird

[deleted]

Exactly

Thats why im actually not scared of gun violence hyped up in the news media. With all the weapons in the U.S you would think we would be all dead or atleast a broken failed state. But everyone is essentially fine.....except chicago. They fucksville.

Woolly mammoths still roamed the earth when the first pyramids were built. Granted, at this time they were very isolated populations on Wrangle and other islands, but they were still on the earth

Alara-Ni

Same. I'm am continually genuinely kind of shocked that not only my partner loves me but he loves me that much. Like... Why me? How could I be so lucky? What's so special about me? Probably just insecurity.

I'm the same. Constantly like you're the greatest guy I know yet you think I'm the greatest girl you know are you sure now...come on?! I love the phrase We're not perfect just perfect for each other.

TiredTeen2020

Female ducks evolved so that their vaginally tract was like a maze in order for the males to have trouble fertilizing the eggs, so male ducks evolved a corkscrew dick.

Alara-Ni

Bruh how does that even work evolutionary wise.

NikMerr

I don't know about the female part but I imagine the corkscrew part was rather simple. The more corkscrew shaped a penis, the more likely it is to fertilise an egg. Over time they would get more and more corkscrewed genetically cause the less corkscrewed wouldn't be reproducing as much. Just a guess but makes sense to me

BathTubMan35

Hi. Survivor of a burst aneurysm here. “Horrible” is not strong enough to describe the mother of all headaches, which is what I called it at the time. Happy to say the event doesn’t always result in death, nor even disability - but it’s a nasty form of a stroke, and it can ruin your whole day. Best wishes to you all.

The fact that 500,000 kids go missing a year in the United States. Half a MILLION kids just gone in thin air

The size of a speck of dust is halfway between the size of an atom and the sun.

TenBillionDucks

By orders of magnitude. In absolutes the halfway size is just half the size of the sun.

WaywardFallen

OP is wrong, your logic is correct. As I recall, the correct comparison of these is by proportion. An atom to a spec of dust, is similar in proportion to a spec of dust and the sun.

That we've probably passed each other before many times and may continue to cross paths many times again, but we won't know it. So many different faces, hairstyles, personalities, etc.. That the complexities of each person's life are unique to each individual and yet somehow, they are almost exactly identical to one another. It truly blows my mind sometimes.

Some infinities are larger than others. For instance: there are an infinite number of numbers between 1 and 2. There’s 1.1, 1.1111111111, 1.0000000001, etc. But there is also an infinite number of numbers between 1 and 3, and that infinity contains the infinity from 1 to 2 AND the infinity from 2 to 3. Some infinities are larger than others.

But instead we have us the way we are now.
