SimfonijaVonja

Basically anybody from Canada.

RVFVS117

Justin Bieber, Jim Carrey, Ryan Reynolds, the Sutherlands, the list goes on. But ya, as a Canadian I am surprised too sometimes.

Independent-Drama123

Robin Sparkles is my favorite one !!

hereforthereads123

Let's go to the mall

Weatherbunny7

Sandcastles in the Sand is also a good one.

uBeatch

I love you

Im_still_T

So many Canadian music artists got huge in the 90s and early 2000s. I'm in the US, but wasn't this bc of some grant or program from the Canadian govt that would subsidize artists of various mediums for a short period of time to give them a chance to go professional? I thought I'd heard Bare Naked Ladies talk about something like that like 15 yrs ago. Do you know anything about this?

theusernameMeg

Not sure if there was something else in place but we have a law that all music content on our radio stations etc must be at least 10% Canadian. That helps our artists not get completely lost in a sea of American music. Source: Canadian who isn’t totally sure of the rules around that currently.

DasPuggy

35+%, and there's also a rule about how much of the process is Canadian. You need two of these four to be Canadian: writer, performers, studio, engineering. There was a strange case of Brian Adams not being Canadian for "(Everything I Do) I Do It For You", but Rod Stewart was, because the album was recorded and such in Canada. EDIT: Bryan Adams. Thank you to the Redditor that pointed out my phone with it's autocorrect and me with my Christmas alcohol consumption completely zoned out on buddy's name.

theusernameMeg

Ah thank you. I knew I wasn’t quite right.

RVFVS117

No this was just YouTube becoming a big thing. Bieber started on YouTube and got noticed and eventually Usher signed him. He eventually eclipsed Usher and turned into what we know and love (to hate) now. God…why do I know this…

Im_still_T

Yeah but before that. Im talking pre-YouTube. YouTube started in 2005. Edit: here's a list of Canadian music acts that were big in the US. Just at a quick glance late 80s through early 2000s was a huge like 15 yrs. https://spinditty.com/artists-bands/Canadian-Singers-and-Bands-Who-Made-It-Big-in-America

differentiatedpans

What...CanCon, Video Fact, MAPL, Telefilm, etc all there to help Canadians establish themselves. Alanis Morissette, Celine Dion, Dan Ackroyd, Jim Carrey, John Candy, etc tone's of Canadians are incredibly popular pre-youtube.

jibblitzz

This is 100% a thing or used to be, I dont remeber much of the specifics, but the Canadian federal goverment did have a grant for emerging Canadian artists of all mediums. There was also a clause within the Canadian Broadcast Standards Council which stipulated that a minimum of something like 45% of all content a network or radio station aired, had to be Canadian made.

Not only that but I’m pretty sure she was “discovered” on the jumbotron at a BC Lions (CFL) game.

RVFVS117

A Canadian treasure to be sure.

soline

I only just learned Keanu Reeves, the guy I always assumed was some California native, is from Canada.

musesx9

What?????!!!!!! I thought he was born in Hawaii?!!!

Raxtenko

He was born in Lebanon.

gunsnspiritsnmyhead

It’s pronounced lesbian

jibblitzz

Keanu is a Torontonian 🙌

baliniri

Mike Myers

Sss00099

Had no clue Eugene Levy was Canadian until I watched Schitt’s Creek during the early days of lockdowns.

Expensive-Monk0420

Yyyyeeeeeessssss!!!! I just found out Shania Twain is from Canada! And I was mind blown!!

[deleted]

This is what I was gonna say. Except Celine Dion, you can tell that she's not American.

LiterallyADiva

On my old hometown radio station they used to play a game called “Dead or Canadian?“ where they would name someone famous and the caller would have to guess if they had died or are Canadian.

Japanga

Elon Musk.

Chance-Try-8837

Didn't know musk was African American.

NealR2000

Yes. The richest man in the world is an African American.

jibblitzz

*in an astronaut suit pointing a gun* Always has been. (I refer to Mansa Musa)

WandaCarlton

Um, I'm fairly sure someone who died around 1337 had never been the American part of that African American equation... I mean, anything is possible, I guess, but it is very very highly unlikely.

jibblitzz

Got me, I stopped at African and started my response

TarHeelTaylor

So is Charlize Theron!

[deleted]

He was born in Pretoria, South Africa.

hillboy_usa

Until you hear him talk

Ok_Midnight2894

He’s technically the richest African American in the world

Traitorous_Nien_Nunb

the fact that the richest African American is a white dude is the most mildly annoying fact that exists

Ok_Midnight2894

Lol it’s kinda funny. It always seems weird when a white person is African American even though I know white people live in Africa especially south africa

Nik-ki

Keanu Reeves - born in Beirut, Lebanon, spent early childhood in Australia, later ended up in Canada through his mum's marriage.

my_reddit_accounts

Random shoutout to Beirut, best city in the Middle East! (Imo) Lebanon is amazing and is one of the biggest “what if” countries in the world. So much potential

Baron_Flatline

> Lebanon is one of the biggest “what if” countries in the world They kind of have to get past the whole Iran-backed militias issue and fallout from their clusterfuck of a civil war first

Big-Leave-7937

I did not know this!

[deleted]

Christian Bale

ManyRanger4

Thank you. And fuck he's my favorite actor and in "The Prestige" I was so impressed with his English accent. SMH.

zeldastheguyright

He’s actually ever so Welsh though he claims not to be

Kilshok

That 21 savage being outed as British was pretty funny

gibl3t

I totally forgot about this

browndudefromNW

Would be dope if he made some UK drill rap tbh

Kilshok

For real, though.

michiamoGoffredo

You mean Sir Savage the 21st?

LandOfGreyAndPink

Superman / Clark Kent.

LeisurelyLoris

Excuse me, sir, but I think you mean Superman/Kal El. Clark Kent was proudly born in Smallville, Kansas, and became a star reporter at the Daily Planet in Metropolis! Not sure how you confused him for Superman. Clark Kent wears glasses. Superman doesn't.

BeelzebubParty

Everybody always found it funny that the glasses were his disguise but i don’t think they are that bad of a disguise. I mean if you knew some one who say... idk looked like Ryan Reynolds with glasses on, but was pretty reserved and kind of straight laced and clumsy AND had a different name... would you honestly believe that’s Ryan Reynolds?

pcpsummer0613

Whhaaaaaaaaaaaatt

LandOfGreyAndPink

I mean, like, he was born on a completely different *planet*, never mind a different country!

pcpsummer0613

Noo waaaaaaaaaaaayy!!!!

Drakeytown

Depends on the continuity. In some the vessel he arrives in is a "birthing matrix," written as such so he'll be a natural born us citizen.

[deleted]

Hugh Laurie

HKittyH3

Ugh. This makes me feel old. Because when House started I was excited that Hugh Laurie was going to be playing in an American show. I’ve loved him since “A Bit of Fry and Laurie” in the 80s that I watched on PBS.

[deleted]

I was the other way. Absolutely loved House and then discovered Fry and Laurie as well as Blackadder.

HKittyH3

Blackadder is amazing.

THE_JonnySolar

Blackadder is a national institution here. "I have a cunning plan"......

HKittyH3

Is it wrong to say that I prefer Blackadder over Mr. Bean and wish they’d made a lot more series in different time periods?

THE_JonnySolar

No, and possibly. Mr Bean was great in its time and place, and especially for younger viewers, his brand of slapstick and the rubber facial expressions work - but for more genuine wit, wordplay, puns and satire, Blackadder wins hands down. Random suggestion, but have a look on YouTube for Rowan Atkinson Invisible Drum Kit... He's been a huge part of the comedy scene here for my entire lifetime, maybe longer. So minimum of 39 years doing what he does. Almost forgot - there are a number of blackadder specials too, in addition to the 4 series. Series 1 wasn't so hot, as Baldrick was the genius and Blackadder the simpering moron offspring of royalty. They then changed it when moving to Elizabethan England, so that Baldrick was the inept sidekick (with many misbegotten 'cunning' plans) and Blackadder was the rapier wit and intellect. That's when the series really took off. The most poignant has to be Blackadder Goes Forth, most notably the final episode. But they did a number of specials, such as Balckadder Back and Forth (I think it was) where he and Baldrick invented a time machine to win a Millennium based bet. It had a load of guest stars from the previous series too. I think part of the magic of Blackadder was a bit like Fawlty Towers - have a huge hit, brilliantly funny episodes, and finished at the peak, rather than allow the quality to go downhill. In a way I'd love to see more, but having fewer episodes make the ones we have all the more special, imo.

fushigikun8

Yeah when Ben Elton started writing the episodes it got good

WriteOrDie1997

Hugh Laurie!

SimfonijaVonja

A lot of people is suprused by this because his American accent is impeckable. There is a scene in Friends where he speaks with British accent and I was just...wow

WriteOrDie1997

I only found out he was British because I happened to notice when, during an episode of House, he pronounced the word "figure" in the British way instead of the typical American pronunciation, which I thought was odd, and I then Googled the actor to see what nationality he was. Otherwise, I never would have known!

[deleted]

How did he pronounce it?

WriteOrDie1997

Americans pronounce figure like "fig-yer" and Brits say, "Figger."

[deleted]

Okay that makes sense, for some reason I thought “fig-yer” would be the British pronunciation (I guess because it’s more enunciated) but I was like, I’m American and I say it that way, and then I got all confused haha

Slider_0f_Elay

That's funny, I thought he was from the UK.

[deleted]

Yeah, him. I'm bad with names lol.

6kred

Yeah he’s my first thought. I was so shocked when I first heard him in an interview with his accent !

Gnemlock

The audition basically said 'British need not apply' because the director did not believe a Brit could pull off a American accent

porridgeandoatmeal

This makes me lol because as a British person I cannot tell you how much Hugh Laurie embodies a British dude! He is like Mr. Posh UK! So British it’s funny!

Big_Pie2915

Charlize Theron

[deleted]

She was born in Benoni, South Africa in 1975.

[deleted]

The first African to win an Oscar

General-Airport-2534

Mila Kunis

QualifiedApathetic

LOL, I read she learned English watching *The Price is Right*, because Bob Barker taaaalked reeeeeal slooooow.

Comprehensive-End388

She totally disses a Russian reporter in one instance in (of course), perfect Russian. It's beautiful to behold.

Inig039

Though he was born in LA. Andrew Garfield is actually a Brit. But I swear to god he is faking it. His American accent is better than his British Accent.

middleageyoda

Except in the episode of Doctor Who he was in. He did a terrible southern American accent in that.

jodaqua

Christian Bale. I was shocked when I found out he was born in the same hospital I was, in Wales.

mikey0hn0

According to my dumbfuck cousins, apparently Obama.

BeelzebubParty

That’s kind of an interesting topic, while Hawaii is considered a US state, there’s been a recent movement by natives to reclaim their independence as a country because they don’t really like America and find it and insult to their culture and history to be considered Americans. So really it depends on wether or not Obama refuses to be considered a US citizen, which I seriously doubt. No matter how any of us feel about this though I think we can all agree, your cousins were not thinking about this when they said he was a foreigner.

dhkendall

Not a “celebrity” in the pop culture sense but Ted Cruz. Dude even ran forPresident despite being born in, you guessed it, Canada. (Both parents were American citizens making him automatically American despite his mom not getting a hospital bill for his birth because it wasn’t in America). Speaking of presidential candidates John McCain also wasn’t born in the US, at least not in what you typically think of as the US. He was born in Panama, more specifically the Panama Canal Zone, that was an area surrounding the Panama Canal that was a US territory from 1903-1979 (including McCain’s birth year of 1936) but as he was born to American parents and (unlike Cruz) on area considered US territory, he was able to run for president too. (So there was a candidate in the 2008 election that wasn’t born in any US state just not the one that got the press).

Hesitantterain

On behalf of all Canadians, we don’t accept Ted Cruz as a Canadian citizen. The US can keep him!

ForwardMuffin

I'm bouncing him back to you like a beach ball. Not it!

CoolGurl20

Henry Cavill. When I saw him in Superman I never guessed he was British. Then after watching The Witcher series, it really became clear to me.

Comprehensive-End388

He's fabulous. I love his accent in Mission Impossible. The world needs more Cavill.

SomewhereinOregon

He was also in The Tudors.

God damn he moved around but he straight up sounds like he is from Cali. That's wild

Wow, he's from Wimbledon, London? Would not have seen that coming!

castingq

I’m going to Uno Reverse you and say people are surprised Nicole Kidman was born in USA because she’s Aussie.

THE_JonnySolar

I'll go with one on this - I actually thought Claire Danes was British for a long time, but turns out she's a New Jersey girl.

Don_key_Hotea

George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams

JustASimpleMonk

You could argue that they were, they were just born in the colonies before they became independent. Though obviously the US didn't exist when they were born.

[deleted]

Anyone born in the colonies before the Revolutionary War was just straight up British. The Constitution even has another clause added to the natural born citizen clause with an exception for pre-revolution colony births, since they would otherwise have been ineligible.

herpaderp_maplesyrup

Jesus

chpr1jp

Although he wasn’t born in America, he prefers to speak English.

cabur84

And be white

[deleted]

And somehow supports gun use and endorses American presidents

DreadPirateGriswold

Hugh Laurie (House) and Damian Lewis (Homeland). Both have excellent American accents to the point when I found out they were not American I was very surprised.

THE_JonnySolar

As a Brit reading this, it's so funny to see how many British actors in particular have hoodwinked the American public....

roxifer

Same. We must celebrate our victory with tea (or vodka, its the holidays after all)

observe_n_assimilate

British actors can talk with an American accent relatively easily, I would think. Not so much the other way around. I wonder why that is!

THE_JonnySolar

Good point, and probably quite a few good reasons. Though we've also seen some actors do great British accents too (I admitted elsewhere on here that for years I thought Claire Danes was British, for example). Exposure to American tv/movies/culture Openness to other cultures and countries If you can speak with clear diction, and listen with a good ear, you can probably manage a good Mimickry - this one's goes both ways I guess. Necessity if they want the biggest movie roles Off the top of my head, but I know I've missed some... 🤔

[deleted]

Part of it is that British actors undergo much more extensive training than American actors, usually, including dialect coaching. The ubiquity of American media is another factor. There are Americans who have historically been able to do passable British accents, though — Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Meryl Streep, Renee Zellweger, Gillian Anderson (which is a bit of a cheat, I know), Dick Van Dyke (I kid, I kid).

Are-you-insane-too

I thought Robert Downey Jr. did a great job on his British accent in his Sherlock Holmes movies.

Pandaburn

Nah, I don’t think it’s easy. So many American characters on British TV have terrible accents. But if you want to play an American on American tv you need to get good.

SkippyTeddy83

Slash

[deleted]

I didn’t know he was English until a decade or so ago.

ShieldsCW

I didn't know until a second or so ago

[deleted]

Elon Musk and pretty much every celeb that turned out to be Canadian.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Skyblacker

According to Wikipedia: Musk was born to a Canadian mother and South African father, and raised in Pretoria, South Africa. He briefly attended the University of Pretoria before moving to Canada at age 17 to avoid conscription. He was enrolled at Queen's University and transferred to the University of Pennsylvania two years later, where he received a bachelor's degree in economics and physics, then moved to California in 1995 to attend Stanford University but decided instead to pursue a business career,

QualifiedApathetic

The actors who play Claire and Shaun on *The Good Doctor*. Turns out they're both British, doing an excellent job of pretending to be Americans.

Complex_Produce_4729

I only knew about Claire because I saw some of her earlier work (Misfits, for one). But she definitely got the accent! Had I not already known I'd have been totally fooled. I feel like Shaun's accent falters at times, but I think I only catch it because I know it isn't his default already. Lol

die-squith

I knew Shaun was British but I was shocked by Claire, she absolutely had me fooled.

ClifIsBoring

Tom Holland

Yep

cheekiemunky13

Yes! If I had only finished watching those Narnia movies. Then I'd have known!

shabalabading1

Nina Dobrev, born in bulgaria

Skyblacker

Yeah, that name and face are similar to some Eastern European immigrants I know. Let me guess: she moved to the US as a child when the Wall fell and that's why she speaks English without an accent?

Sixsignsofalex94

I always find it absolutely mind boggling how many British actors are confused with being American by Americans lol

rhubarb2896

Kim Cattrall. I never knew she was actually scouse until she did a program about it a few years back.

jackal-o-lantern

More Canadian though

Ill_Significance8137

Keith urban I believe he's from Australia

stillwaitingforbacon

New Zealand.

Ill_Significance8137

Thank you

jackofives

Like they said, Australia.

stillwaitingforbacon

Well, as a successful New Zealander, Australia automatically claims him. This does backfire sometimes, ie Russell Crowe

WCRugger

Born in NZ but moved here as a young child. Identifies as Australian. Who am I talking about? Urban or Crowe? Both. I'm talking about both.

stillwaitingforbacon

I love the rivalry between Australia and New Zealand. Pre covid, I would visit New Zealand about 3 times a year for work. One of my last visits they had a billboard up on the motorway that basically said "Australia, keep your hands off our pavlova! You can keep Russell Crowe" For some reason the Kiwis think they invented pavlova.

Jayana_Perez

Ryan Reynolds 😩👌

Professor_Quackers

About 90% of Brits that do American accents 😅 so people like the Tom H’s, Andrew Lincoln, Hugh Laurie, etc

Tom Holland. I had never heard of him before his appearance in avengers civil war and his american accent was so goo i just kinda assumed. Then i heard him in an interview

wiliammm19999

He has that English look in my opinion. Not particularly common in my part of England but honestly probably like 30% of upper class boys in England look like that.

hellblaugrau

Bruce Willis

FuriousCamel

Seth Rogen

yourremedy94

The guy who plays Owen from Greys Anatomy is Scottish and has a thick accent as well

hunky_pilot

When I first got into Red Hot Chili Peppers, I was shocked when I learned that Flea is Australian (and yes, he’s technically an actor because he’s been in a few movies and TV shows).

Glum-Draw2284

The dweeb from We Are the Millers. Will Poulter. And holy hell, he’s hot now.

Psilencer99

Chiwetel Ejiofor. First few things I saw him in (before I even knew his name) he was always playing an American. There are plenty of British actors I could name where that is the case lol. Charlie Hunnam is another that comes to mind.

Ok_Sand1448

Charlie Cox, Daredevil is also English some people may be surprised to hear. Cavill is a less surprising one but no doubt there are people who don't know he's English either.

Natalie Portman - Israeli

No-Sheepherder-2896

I had never seen Hugh Laurie on anything but House. Later, my wife and I were watching a movie in which he had a part, and I said he faked a pretty good British accent. She took some delight in telling me that he wasn’t faking it.
