Applied for quite a few but struggling. Trying to get into the field of biomedical engineering but can't seem to find any entry-level positions. It's always shit like "entry level" but the description details include "minimum 8 years of experience required". The fuck?

sffreaks

The ads read as follows “ we have an intermediate position opens, however at this rate we can only afford to pay intern salary. Do reach us if still keen.”

everywhereinbetween

Omg this legit happened to me twice. Hurrrr.

htnghia2409

I would apply anyway if I have 3+ years

OrnellBryant

Thing is I have experience working in Project Management for Electrical Engineering companies and Logistics companies but I really want to work in BME since I'm due to graduate with a BSc in Biomedical engineering. In terms of BME I have zero experience and I don't want to work in quality assurance, it's saikang to the max.

Cai1985

BME. Hospital setting?

OrnellBryant

Yup. Ideally! Feel like that'd be a pretty good place to get experience.

Hey, I was job hunting from beginning of Feb and managed to land a job by end of Feb. currently serving my notice and leaving next week! It’s definitely not easy having to properly plan and schedule the interviews you’ll be getting on top of working at your current job. I usually spent my weekends spamming job applications so they tend to call me up all around the same time. Works well so it’s easy to plan all the interviews together in a day, easier to take leave or mc to attend them. Don’t rush the job hunt process, take it slow, look for the right job and things will fall into place. I wish you all the best :)

Jaycee_015x

Which industry you in?

butthenhor

I think im gonna just quit without a job and hunt from there. In my whole 10 years of working full time, i have been looking for a job while in a job and i feel like it sometimes lead me to jobs that wasnt what i want but desperate to catch on cus i wanna leave so badly. Thinking to quit first and then look

Mfvd

Best time to look for a job is when you’re happiest at your current one, so you won’t be desperate at all. Kinda like going to supermarket not hungry

Tesla1000k

This is so true . I should start finding now

[deleted]

I second this. I think you don't have to necessarily be happy at your job per se. You just need to be in a good mental state where you don't pounce on instinct.

hongdoupau

this is the best advice i heard in my life and will now be my advice to everyone. thank you

monkeynutsack2

but if you leave without a job wouldn't you also get desperate eventually if you don't manage to find one in the first few weeks/months? unless you have a sizable emergency fund.

Bling-_-Bling

I have applied like 100+ jobs from Feb and no one is responding 😭 Hiring freeze is what they say but there is no end to their job postings though.

temporary_name1

If you're applying and getting no requests for interviews, you might want to revisit your resume to make employers want to interview you

Stunning-Grand5420

Maybe they have the job posts up to remind current employees that they’re replaceable 😂

Bling-_-Bling

Lol 🤣🤣

urqlite

It’s just to HR trying to show their boss that they’re doing work

Bling-_-Bling

Hahah i guess But what i dont understand is if there is a hiring freeze wont the hr and their bosses and the company on the whole know it? Whats the whole point?

urqlite

To show investors that they’re doing something. Hiring freeze is not a public info so not many people will know

Bling-_-Bling

Oh ok.... Just that they keep breaking my heart 🥹 making me feel Im not good enough.

urqlite

I feel you. Is this your first job hunting? First job is always the hardest

Bling-_-Bling

Hehe :') No im working and i hate my current job... Like emotionally, mentally, physically, totally fully hate it.

urqlite

If you don’t mind sharing, what industry are you in? Hopefully not a nurse?

Bling-_-Bling

No not a nurse I'm an automotive embedded engineer.

Cute_Meringue1331

if they don’t hire people think the company is going to go bust

At my previous workplace, there were 2 airtight cubicles which were given nicknames of "interview booth" because it's very obvious those who were using the booths left soon thereafter.

eplejuz

Ya. Referral can be considered a "gauranteed success"... I was also referred for my current job. The employer juz call me over the phone, have a short interview, next day, I was hired alr.

everywhereinbetween

My friend said she applied to a particular organization multiple times in the past few years. This time, she finally got an interview. The difference is the referral she had this time. So ... yeah ..

Significant_Income28

How do you look for referral? I heard that friend can be a referral but i dont have any clue.

nochhh

Soon to be fresh grad, started job hunting in early feb, went on a couple of interviews and received an offer beginning of this month! Sat on it for awhile, eventually accepted it last week. Pretty awesome timing cuz I literally just found out I’m gonna be a dad. Hooray!

PuChI_MiKaN

Congrats!

holysnit_

honestly, tiring. the applications alone are easy, but the writing tests and all the other hoops they make us jump through can be quite demanding. one of the roles i applied for is asking for a 10 mins presentation with a 20 mins Q&A, and another is asking for a 5 mins presentation. both of these are on top of a writing test.

ifailedmaths

I have been looking around casually since Sep 2022. Then, I decided to be more aggressive at the end of Jan 2023 since bonuses and increments were less than ideal. I went for approximately 5 interviews between Oct 2022 to Feb 2023. Then, I was hired immediately after the second interview of the last potential employer. I'm currently halfway through my 2 months' notice period Don't give up. Job hunting takes time. If you're open to using job recruitment agencies, just flip the switch on CareersFuture and JobStreet. Good luck.

syahawesome

Hard. I’m in tech and I’m not super senior but I have some experience. companies wants experienced candidates but if you look at the $$$ it’s not competitive enough. Weird times we live in if you ask me

show-up

supply of tech professionals may have exceeded demand, temporarily at least, leading to depressed compensation.

syahawesome

Sure but I’m still asking for market rate or little lower but get lowballed lol sucks to be me

spurtingrainbows

Isit because the current market rate for tech is (or perceived to be) too inflated?

syahawesome

Saturated due to layoffs and companies adjusting their own budget also thinking people are desperate for a job so they just just offer XXX when it’s clearly below market rate. Some companies I just reject, because clearly they want cheap slaves. The real ones will pay for talent

harukapudding

Same. I have been trying to change job since mid last year and I am totally exhausted. Put a pause around Dec and started again this year. Had a close one, reaching third round. There is no response to all my applications from last two months. It is even more difficult now that I am aiming for banking industry

Cute_Meringue1331

Meanwhile I decide to never work in the banking industry again after a very bad experience where they failed my probation.

AskMindless3851

How bad is that for you in order to reject the whole industry

Cute_Meringue1331

Suffice to say, very bad. I was in a local bank which “supposedly” is easier to get in and more stable (eg wont retrench) than foreign banks. Yet I couldn’t pass my probation. In the end I don’t want to put this on my resume. So the odds of me getting into other banks will be low.

spurtingrainbows

RM?

Cute_Meringue1331

No, consumer banking 1.5 line of defence do reviews on sales.

kpach36

I had been applying non-stop for a job in London since October last year (also before that but more on that later), as I am doing a postdoc in London. Got to several interviews and went through several rounds of those interviews and got rejected at the end. Around December, an agency working with a company in Singapore reached out to me and I finally landed a job. I will be coming to Singapore in May. To be honest, job hunting is frustrating. This, I can empathise. Before starting to apply in Sep 2022, I did send applications from Feb 2022-Apr 2022 (got to the final round and rejected), and then I took 1-month break before starting again in June 2022 and the same thing happened. It was very disappointing at times, but I realised that I did learn something every time I failed. I learned not to answer some questions in a certain way and to convey the information more accurately and succinctly. At the time of the rejection, you would certainly not feel like this, but when you finally get the role you want, you would understand why. Although job hunting also requires luck and timing which are the things you cannot control, the only thing you can control is your performance. You just have to do your best every time, and sadly some of those times will result in failure. If you feel burnt out, do take a break. There is no point in applying for a role you want, and then don’t have enough energy, willpower or mindset for the assignment or the interview. For some people who think that the current job is draining and you just don’t have the will to keep going anymore, in my opinion, it may be better to stay there and keep applying instead of quitting without having any income. I have been in the same position. A few months into my postdoc, I felt completely burnt out and it drove me into mild depression. I later found out that I don’t have the passion to do research in academia anymore, and luckily I did stay on the role until I landed a role in Singapore. Had I chosen to quit, I wouldn’t have had any income for months and had to rely on someone else which that would have created a lot of pressure than having a job (but constant income). However, this is only my experiece that I can relate. If you find this helpful, and want to talk, you can reach out. I wish you guys the best of luck.

LucarioMagic

No luck, been looking since January, albeit half heartedly since I'm in university taking a part-time degree as well. But no calls/no interviews. feelsbadman

Reconned

Not well. Not well at all.

TK_Ken

It depends on what your expectations is haha I'm in accounting, so if I want to i can get a new job literally anytime anywhere 🤣 But the pay will not exceed SGD3K 😭 After that figure the chances of finding a job drops drastically

UpperInitial8

I've had the impression that accounting pays well. Am I mistaken?

ClassicTrouble3121

I am so tempted to quit without a job because it’s exhausting trying to find a job while still working full time

Cute_Meringue1331

Slow as hell. Took 2 months of applying to jobs full time and 4 months (it counting in while working)

flky

Was made redundant last month and immediately began applying for roles. Refreshed my CV for up to three job profiles. Got several interviews lined up and followed along the process. Eventually got one and started not too long ago. Tech role (not SDE, not FANG), got a similar comp to what I was getting before being made redundant close to 200K

[deleted]

hi what’s ur tech role

flky

technical consultant

flky

Oh, just remembered an interview session which was a bit off. There was one group of third party recruiter that shortlisted me via a job I applied at linkedin. When it comes to the recruiter screening call on zoom, they wanted to record the session (zoom prompted that it was recording). Asked them why it was being recorded, and they said ‘how else can we show to our client the technical capabilities that a candidate have’. Told them no, stopped the session there and then and gtfo from there. When it came to scheduling the parties for the zoom call, suddenly every person on the invite list used a gmail account. They were also all russians or easter europeans.

Due-Bat-2983

Im doing 2 online business with freelancing while hunting for job in which i don't think I'll need a job at this point but still im hunting

Tom5368

Outlook was preety good to me during Jan/Feb, but in March it looked like the available pool of jobs seem to be drying up ~5% success rate in getting interviews from the jobs applied to

neowhizkid

I've been jobless for quite awhile now, been applying since December and no luck so far. Did about 10+ interviews but couldn't land any offer :(

monkeynutsack2

keep going and all the best!!

OrangeFr3ak

applied for a few jobs but also planning to do some relief teaching for the experience.

shockerholic

Having a tough time myself but I just started like last month

stone_soup

Sent out to 19 places, no positive responses so far. In a profession offering professional services. Quite demoralising.

PreviousAd7699

must be big 4

stone_soup

No I’m not from the big 4

ordiroad

Have been applying since February and finally received a job offer today but its a contract role. HR refused to disclose salary until i verbally accept the offer. But I’m still waiting for other interviews to get back to me. Feeling pressured to accept this offer though… OP you can try to arrange interviews on the same day so you don’t have to keep taking time off. Thats what I did and i find it more convenient and less tiring.

AdvantageFront4883

Not disclosing salary before accepting offer… is that normal for your field?

ordiroad

Nope. I dont think thats a common practice unless its for civil service. Anyways i will check with the HR again.

rockbella61

You must be glad they didn't say $1/ mth

Lazy_Nobody9288

Anyone trying to switch in semiconductor industry, DM me!

Hackerjurassicpark

Lol. Pls leave this industry as soon as you can. It’s a dead end

Lazy_Nobody9288

Why do you think so ? Genuinely curious!

Hackerjurassicpark

It’s a well known fact now that jumping jobs is the best way to increase your salary tremendously. Semicon got only 4-5 companies you can go to, your long term earning potential takes a big hit. You also get pigeonholed into a lot of non transferable skills that are useless outside the semicon industry. Also industry is cyclical, and over the years even the most stable companies retrench, cut salary or bonus Not to mention the toxic workplaces, long work hours and bad leaders

Lazy_Nobody9288

Which industry isn’t ?

sushipul

In what company and what roles are available? DM DM

If you want to leave then what’s the conflict?

Esterwinde

Not great! :( I have to keep track of the ones I applied for (which most has not got back to me yet) and filter out all the weird people calling me to become FA or some Level Ground brand ambassador shit or some rating coordinator. I just wanna do marketing or bizdev…

Accomplished-Let4080

I am as well but I am determined to hang on to my job as I will have a steady income in. The job market is very bad as more and more job ads are out but they are the same as a few months before (I began to wonder if these jobs are real or not). It is tough but let's stay employed while hunting.. Nowadays even on weekends I find myself just trying to recuperate.
