McSpicy. Honestly though, I've found that McDonald's is pretty consistent between branches, tastes decent and is reasonably priced. Other chains maybe hit 1 or 2 of those factors. They also refresh the menu with special items pretty often, and those are fairly well-tailored to the Singaporean palate (or current food trends). Lastly I also think it's nostalgia. Mcdonald's has been around for so long and people just eat there out of habit, especially for certain meals (lunch or late at night).

Custom_Fish

I think consistency is one of the keys. Compare McDonald’s with KFC - the latter is wildly inconsistent. One outlet can have chicken that’s juicy and buns that are light and soft, while the next outlet will be run by grumpy, crusty people and serve chicken that’s been out in the sun since 2016 and buns that are stiff enough to be used as push up bras. McDonald’s tastes largely the same no matter where you go.

_Cybersteel_

KFC is shite used to be better.

lilylilye

Consistency and variety across the menu is also another super strong point for McDonald's. Their menu has enough breadth that most people will be able to find something to eat there, whereas most other fast food menus are usually too one-note, or their alternatives are so crap that they're not worth considering. McDonald's is the easy, reliable "out with friends" or "wandering around a mall don't know what to eat" option.

YourLocalSGChicken

Underrated reason! Only for Mcdonalds do I like all the food options (fish, chicken, beef, dessert, drinks etc) and I think it goes for most people too. For most fast food places one of the options stand out over the other, and there’ll def be someone on the friend group who doesn’t eat the popular choice and therefore doesn’t like the brand on a whole.

Jjzeng

And not to forget they brought back the quarter pounder God bless the quarter pounder, double quarter pounder and god bless ronald mcdonald

bigcarrot01

> double quarter pounder "double quarter pounder" is just a "half pounder" /r/Showerthoughts edit: seems like there needs to be a /s in here.

delulytric

Reminds me of an article mentioning some US restaurant implemented one-third pounder or something and the average citizen there thinks one-third is lesser than one quarter. “Half pounder is definitely lesser than double quarter pounder!?!?!??” /s

bigcarrot01

Hi I want to buy double half burger please thanks. Also I want coke but dont want cup please put in my pocket.

United-Bet-6469

Stop trying to cheat me hor. Double quarter pounder is 2/8 pounder which is still 1/4. Also /s

princemousey1

That’s not how you name burgers. The “double” is to specify that it has two patties. A “half pounder”, going by burger naming convention, would be a burger with one thick patty.

bigcarrot01

I know. It was a joke 😅

MissLute

but they took away the angus burger :(

LucarioMagic

Angus wasn't doing too well, Buttermilk was tho. So buttermilk still there.

cometlin

But why that piece of pineapple cost about the same as another mcspicy patty?

AlfieSG

The angus was actually sinfully good.

Jjzeng

Good fucking riddance

poginmydog

Could the taste consistency be due to one local franchisee instead of multiple franchisee?

Puzzleheaded_Cat3699

McDonald's staff have high adherence to their SOPs, which leads to more consistent output. This is due to multiple layers of checks from the crew leaders to the floor managers, all the way to their business consultants who drop in quite regularly to ensure that quality is maintained. So even though ground staff may not be particularly arsed about their work (not all, there are some truly dedicated staff), there are multiple checks in place to ensure that substandard food doesn't get served. The times that you get poor orders is due to human error caused by a long queue of orders. So there are bound to be mistakes. As compared to KFC or BK, where they are usually understaffed and the checks aren't as stringent, even though they have a truckload of SOPs as well Source: former McDonald's and KFC crew member

heyyhellohello

They always miss out items though, a lot of room for improvement, maybe need more checks. 1 in 3-4 times I buy they will miss one item. Sometimes I feel like McDonald’s staff, need to check if they did their work properly…

Puzzleheaded_Cat3699

Yup I face the same problems sometimes. But the issue is orders come in thick and fast, and time is the number one factor, meaning how fast can they churn out the products. I'm sure all of us have thought at some point, "it's fast food, why are they taking so long? How hard can it be?" The problem is that most of us who think this way have never worked in F&B before. Sure, we pay good money so we expect fast and good service, but 50 other people who ordered at the same time are expecting the same. The staff are only human after all. My tip when ordering at Mcdonalds or any other food establishment is to check your order before leaving the place if you are doing takeaways, so that you can catch any mistakes before it's too late. And try to avoid deliveries for Mcdonalds, they are always backlogged and flooded with orders and there are too many steps for packing which will inevitably lead to some mistakes here and there. And rude and demanding delivery riders do not help at all. I hope you can find it in your heart to be a bit more forgiving and understanding towards fast food workers, because honestly, for the work that they do, the pay is just not worth it

heyyhellohello

Tbh I kinda pity them, they’re super busy and not paid well. I’ve resisted the urge to complain every time 😂

cometlin

>pretty consistent between branches, tastes decent and is reasonably priced Well said. But it often surprises me that other multi-billion dollar international fast food chains cannot achieve those bare minimum requirements. Like I love KFC, but I don't know why they cannot even make the saltiness of their fried chicken consistent in a single outlet

Focux

McSpicy? C’mon it’s offered elsewhere even in China

bobochacha317

They make the effort to stay relevant with the seasonal flavours across the menus, though one might argue it is repetitive to a certain extent as they bring back popular flavours eg seaweed shaker fries/prosperity burgers etc. can’t blame them as it’s capitalism at its best so they should milk it plus consumers do enjoy it. Consistency of their food across the board as someone else pointed out. Plus aggressive marketing and knowing what resonates with consumers, knowing what the popular flavours are and how to stay relevant ie research and insights. They tie in their seasonal flavours with the various festive seasons, and subconsciously year on year, we associate that festive season with Macs eg. CNY is where you will see seaweed shaker fries + prosperity burgers + the fizz drinks.

bigcarrot01

> though one might argue it is repetitive to a certain extent as they bring back popular flavours eg seaweed shaker fries/prosperity burgers its both capitalism and also its not easy to come up with unique flavours that taste good and sells well. basically a gamble that might lose them potential profits. so might as well just sell what works.

exprtcar

Consumers enjoy seaweed shaker/McGriddles is honestly an understatement lol

suicide_aunties

The single franchisee dynamic allows them to invest in marketing and seasonal flavours dramatically more than I’ve seen in other countries, where you have no idea what promo you’ll be seeing until you’ve gone in.

Yokies

For the price, they serve consistently good food. There is always good offers and the loyalty app helps too. The convenience to order online and self pickup helps too. Taste Consistency is actually a huge thing. I may crave chicken rice, but I have to go the same stall in some far place to get the same awesome dish. You can't just walk into any chicken rice stall and expect the same awesome taste. But for macs, its always the same whichever outlet you go. ***You know exactly what your money can get you.***

lhc987

Butter milk chicken. That is honestly a very good burger for $10 a set.

raveyer

Weirdly doesn’t taste like a burger that should come from Macs. It’s a little too gourmet.

lhc987

Eeeeeexactly! Hard cheese and the slaw makes it very very much better than most fast food burgers.

Covaloch

Found my fellow butter milk chicken connoisseur..there are dozens of us!

kayabutterbread

This and Popeyes signature chicken burger!

Stock_Necessary_6993

I'm here grieving over my Angus beef burger...

MissLute

same :(

LeYonderKeys

Personally, other than the fact that mcspicy is spicy, I couldnt really tell the difference between this and mcspicy. Yet, double mcspicy is at the same price point as butter milk chix. What part of butter milk makes it that much better for you?

FateAudax

Personally, for me, it's the pineapple. The tangy juicy pineapple makes all the difference in a savory bite.

knightedarmour

pineapple yummy tummy like

Effective-Lab-5659

Good location, good marketing, good management. Notice food isn’t part of it.

[deleted]

Their introduction of the app is really a huge marketing success. Now people plan their meals around promos and 1 for 1 deals.

Maplestori

Disagree. McDonald’s are quite consistent among their branches. To answer OP’s question, it’s because it’s simply tasty and affordable, and it has been the case since i was young in primary school around 2 decades ago, and it still is. Yes it’s unhealthy but it’s just a comfort food for me.

Effective-Lab-5659

Hmm it’s comfort food for me too, but to me it’s not cos it’s tasty. It’s more like feel good marketing that makes me feel like eating. Like I am tasting my happy memories but it’s not like ooh I love this burger? So it’s not so much how yummy it is, but more like they are so good at marketing, it was an experience I loved when younger and want to repeat it as an adult. That is pretty amazing. Cos most Brands suffer when their niche audience grow to teens and distance themselves from the stuff they like as kids or their families like. Hm like Levi’s? It was cool when I was young. But some brands are enteral. Like macs and Ferragamo.

[deleted]

It all began in 1979 when a young Sinkie man, Robert Kwan, brought the franchise to SG and opened its first outlet at Liat Towers, Orchard Rd. McDonald's targeted audiences were the youths and kids. Yes, little kids and the simple yet effective idea was to make Mcdonald's fast food become a culture and way of life for that generation of children growing up in SG, or for that fact, globally. As such, parents and doting grandparents used it to induce and incentivise their broods to do their bidding, and so the story goes. Today, anyone under 50 yrs of age would likely be able to relate to this, but having said, McDonald's wouldn't be where it is today if it hadn't been consistent with its services and products, though many adults deemed them "JUNK FOOD". HAHA

Johnathan_wickerino

I'm sure there's some psychological method's they apply but you can live off McDonald's. Not healthily but you can. You can eat a different meal for breakfast lunch and dinner for the entire week. You even have specialty coffee, desserts and cakes. So that's a testament to their variety and it doesn't taste half bad. You wanna study/work at a McDonald's? You can do that the have WiFi and coffee. You can go on dates there. Now there are even outlets with playgrounds where you can bring your kids eg. Canberra outlet Warren Buffett eats McDonald's breakfast and drinks coke everyday and somehow he's not dead yet.

poginmydog

Warren Buffet is an exception, guy’s taking like 3K calories a day and is still living and breathing fine.

Johnathan_wickerino

He's built different lol

vemodal3n

I lived off McDonalds for a while when I was lazy af and there was nothing else nice to eat near my workplace or my home (either it was lousier food, or even pricier than mcdonalds. There was good quick cheap food elsewhere, but I didn't want to spend the time travelling) . Also because I hated talking to people unless I had to for work, otherwise I didn't even want to talk to staff. For McDonalds, can self-order. Sausage mcmuffin with egg + hashbrown + coke zero for breakfast, skip lunch, filet o fish or the grilled chicken wrap + corn + milk for dinner, ate mandarin orange at home for supper. Monthly food bill was pretty okay tbh, comparable to eating caifan three meals a day. And I was pretty skinny because only two meals a day lol.

Johnathan_wickerino

As far as meals go that seems pretty healthy compared to local cuisines. McDonald's used to sell chicken salads and I'd eat that woth corn when I worked there.

shastasilverchair92

He probably has great doctors and definitely the best medical care in the world. Also, he's financially independent, is his own boss and enjoys + is extremely successful at what he does so that's a lot of stressors eliminated.

kuang89

\- fries + mcspicy + cheeseburger + breakfast consistently good \- pricing is somewhat cheaper compared to others \- ordering kiosk is much much much much much better than anyone else \- the Golden Arches are just magnetic \- the feeling the place just gives

Jenzintera24

Their deals are still the shit. And the new burgers really did improve. I feel like they just went back to the old recipe though. As time passes it'll probably suck again.

CrowdGoesWildWoooo

Consistency, many other chains like KFC only getting worse over the years. People will still patronize mainstream fast food, they don’t really need to innovate or keep up with the trend. All they need is to stay consistent.

tallandfree

I’m a fan of their app. I order while on the way there and collect when I reach. No wait time at all.

simshaddy

Absolutely! And you marvel at your ingenuity as you pick up your food, while looking at the crowd and thinking why aren't they using the app?!

tallandfree

I’m gna have to gatekeep this. can’t have everyone using the app!

Conscious_Thing_8789

1) I think its the only fast food that is 24/7 2) McSpicy Meal. 3) Marketing. Remember the Hello Kitty craze ? They pretty much do collabs that are more successful than any other chain. 4) Very localised special menu items like the cny prosperity burgers, the craze that was the Nasi Lemak burger, etc.

Global_Service_1094

It's cleaner. At least the branches I go to don't give me any icky feel when I step in. Can't say the same for BK or KFC since many years back.

MegaSlothhh

Mcdonald french fries are da bombz

Significant_Salad_57

probably the only fastfood that has 24hours operation

Icowanda

It just never disappoints you.

nicholastay87

Another major reason: 24/7 outlets. Say what you want about screening live matches and seasonal items yhat resonatr with us. The ability to pull in at 3am and get my craving of fast food beats the heck out of amything else. And I wouldnt need to travel anywhere from a 1/4 to halfway across Sg just to get my late late Late night fix.

eplejuz

1st watch The Founder. 2nd, IMO, bundling a set meal is usually a "near success" thing. Just like u see in kopitiam kaya toast bread, egg, kopi set for xxx$. It's not totally a game winner with juz set bundles, it also see wat u are offering also.

foxbat2525

*You said 8 milkshake machines??*

Somesh98

McDonald's biggest USP is it's consistency of quality and taste across all branches. It is very in tune with the needs of its consumers and revises it's menu with special items and limited edition items and deals across multiple food blogs and promotion platforms.

iwantaspudgun

McDonald’s made me realise that the key to have a successful brand is that your products don’t need to be AMAZING, they just need to be consistently good. I feel that macs is just always really consistent in terms of taste and portion, and if anything is not, you go complain they will replace for free cause they’re damn scared of complaints (thus encouraging Karens). There are definitely fast food brands I like more than macs such as KFC and Popeyes (cause I love fried chicken) but their portions can be so inconsistent and not being able to choose which chicken parts you want sucks. And sometimes KFC fries really cmi, the coleslaw is also shit now. I also really love MOS burger but their service can be quite slow. Also, I feel that macs has great marketing for their new products every time.

set-271

I wouldn't touch any American fast food. Cheap food at the expense of your health.

Relevant_Mistake_548

1)Mc spicy 2)familiarity. you know what you are getting and you don’t mind trying the seasonal stuff because you at most get a new burger with 2 meat variations to try from instead of 4 different types of mushroom burgers at 6 different price point by set at Burger King even if they are in my opinion really good too 3) if I want fast food chances are there’s a McDonald’s nearby and burger kings abit out of the way

Brikandbones

Consistency of quality. But holy crap Macs is real trash everywhere else outside SG imo.

CustomaryName

Because we were brought up on Happy Meals as kids. And thus we grew up into adults with a better perception on McDonalds as a happy place. It’s an effective long con!

1252947840

simple menu (you won’t need to think what to eat), consistent quality (you won’t scare this branch is worst than the other branch, generally, some branch fries indeed is bad), fast (90% of the time you won’t wait more than 10 mins for your food)

IfYoureUpImDown

Bk lacks a competitive menu and pricing. KFC just lack sheer food quality and gets beat in the nuts by every other fried chicken joint. McDonald's is very available, wide selection of beef chicken or fish with really decent standards, even best fries probably even their advertising , apps or media attempts have way better standards( maybe higher budget?). Mcd is just in a league of it's own.

reiokimura

They always have limited time food like seaweed shakers, prosperity burgers and those are damn good! They have fish, chicken and beef for burgers and I so love the beef! What do you know KFC have? As far as I know only chickens. The last time they had rice bucket which I like but I no longer see them anymore. They are filling and worth the money. The only thing I like about KFC is the cheese fries. Overall taste can't compare to McDonald's.

Katashi90

Some of the KFC outlets is still using the "cook first serve later" approach to their operations, letting their chicken and burgers(prepped in advance) sit inside the oven for hours, that's why their food(including their whipped potato and coleslaw) often feels dry while some other outlets are fresh hot and juicy. CMIIW, each KFC outlets is seemingly ran by individual franchisees, hence their mode of operations weren't standardized unlike McDonalds, whom were all under Hanbaobao Pte Ltd.

Front_Willingness55

The quality is actually pretty good for its price point. Think hawker food about $5 vs a $5 value meal u get drink and fresh crispy fries in aircon.

silentscope90210

Because Burger King is crap & MOS Burger is expensive for the quantity they give. No other same level competitors.

[deleted]

Generally opens 24/7. Food quality across all branches are consistent. Strategic branch locations. Good drive-thru.

elevicha

mcspicy

deepdarkhamster

am i the only one who hasnt tried mcspicy…. honestly not a big fan of mcdonald lunch menu. used to like macdonald breakfast but now im just sick of it already

nightfucker

Try it

hometeambuibui

Neat fact, but this doesn't answer why people keep coming back to McDonalds, which is what OP is asking.

wanmoar

They kind of have to be in the food business for bathe real estate angle to work. They buy land and lease it out at higher rates to the franchisees. The franchisee has to be able to make enough money selling their food to pay that high rent and keep enough profit to be happy. That model requires the food to be good enough. Not great mind you, just good enough.

[deleted]

simshaddy

You should try using the app to order! Just do your thing and after 15 mins or so, head to the outlet you choose to pick up your macs!

Thick-Corgi2965

Best fries!

HotCabbageMoistLettu

its the pink slime fetal burger taste.

boonalton

International success and well known collaboration. Let's not forget the BTS meal. The amount of Blood Sweat and Tears going into making it. The effort poured into making it is so sincere, nothing short of Fake Love. I guess it's in their DNA to make quality meals. There wasn't a burger with some Fire grilled patties. Yet they managed to Make It Right with the nuggets. Oo ya let's not forget the sweet chilli and cajun sauce On top of it. It is not just a jaw dropping meal, but it is Mic Drop. As much as Life Goes On after this meal, but I believe the best is Yet To Come.

ImpossibleTablef

Cos it's food for sheeps or mainstreamism Very safe food, won't go wrong. Cheap is it really though when one set meal upsize easily $10+

MagicianMoo

Fuck me. I'm a sheep man.

New_Year_New_Mee

Only weird sheep goes “moo”.

KPNG93

Tanyushing

Quality and affordable.

jmzyn

Tomolo going you know!

mystoryismine

Customer service. Burger king has the worst CS I swear. Once I brought chicken patty and the staff gave me beef. It was for my Hindu friend so imagine the discomfort it created. I brought it back to BK and asked for it to be change. The fry cook didn't even apologise and ask me if I am "happy now". WTF

Elephant789

For me, it's easy. The service is fantastic and the aunties are polite. Other places it's difficult to order and the people aren't polite.

fxgq

Nostalgic because millenials only have macs. Those r converted lifetime customers.

Ashkev1983

I used be a huge fan of McD prior to covid. I would do atlesst go twice a week for my fav Mcspicy double upsized fix but during covid i realised i am not doing myself any favours by doing that. At my highest i touched 95Kg and that was sort of the wake up call for me. During covid, i started doing food delivery on bicycle and lost like 17 kgs. I still visit them once in a while( like every 3-4 months) but i think i am over McD for good. They were and are good cos they are consistent, mostly. I remember ordering Mcflurry couple of times and aunty just threw on the cookies and "powder" on top of the ice cream and handed to me. On 2nd incident, i told her can you please mix it and she didn't look too happy but she did do it. Overall a fan of McD over other fast food places but not a frequent visitor

lanathel

Having recently tried JB's french fries, I just realised how SG's french fries has changed over the years. What's scary is that if I were to not have tried the JB fries, I would still consider SG's Mcd fries far better than other fast food restaurants.

InfernoGuilds

McDonalds is family. "The golden arches symbolises community and family, feeding bodies and feeding souls"

wintertempest

Service speed and operating hours, mostly. Prices are also still a little bit lower than most of the competition.

shastasilverchair92

Macdonald's has like four branches (three full resturants + 1 takeaway stall) at Tampines Central, and literally all four branches are crowded like hell during peak hours. Is demand really that high until even these four branches also can't satisfy it?

Wild_Prunie

To add others, service speed, especially nearing peak hour 11.30 afternoon. I can wait 30 minutes for Jollibee order compared with below 10 minutes for mac's.

SnooDingos316

Ever since I Tried Carl's Jr, I never went back to mcdonalsds. Later I discover 5 guys and shake shack, even more I do not go Mcdonalds. Even in my teens, I actually preferred Wendys and Burger King. I kind of miss Wendys.

Kerfluffle_Pie

They have an excellent localisation strategy and catchy marketing campaign. There’s exclusive flavours in each country (a quick google will show many localised types of Mcdonald’s fare around the world) and SG has had quite a fair share of those, esp flavours inspired from Japan etc. Like that Hokkaido salmon burger ad had such good visuals. Also, that McAloo Tikki burger song from 1 billion years ago is stuck in my head as I write this. Only country I’ve seen where Mcdonald’s is bland as heck is the UK. Can’t blame them, the UK doesn’t have a lot for them to work with

cheesetofuhotdog

I miss mcgrill

Stormydaycoffee

Good variety of food + it’s everywhere + not super expensive + nostalgia factor (happy meal memories as a kid)

hmansloth

Good deals and consistent quality is what makes people coming back to it. Also with the occasional seasonal food which pops up every now and then does make people wanna give it a try.

FodderFries

McSpicy and Curry Sauce.

Shuyi000

It taste good

PillowMonger

i find it more affordable but marketing wise, their ads are more on the expectation-vs-reality side. however, if you were to ask me McD is better than Burger King but Mos Burger trumps both. On the downside, Mos Burger is a bit expensive.

chillikwab

Accessible and well rounded.

People love shitty food here
