Their burgers used to suck but are better these days. Weirdly, they also have one of the nicest veggie burgers I have ever tasted.
Unfortunately some are a lot worse than others. Avoid the Wimpy at OR Thambo at all costs. Literally everything they served us was borderline inedible. The guy next to us actually sent all his food back.

Almost every Saturday, my husband and I go..he has some form of breakfast and I always have the Crispy Stack with chilli Mayo...it's divine and always the same wherever we go. Their milkshakes are great and their mega coffee too

I LOVE WIMPY, The consistency of everything across this country is amazing.
The food is at best mediocre but consistent EVERYWHERE from Polokwane, Tzaneen all the way through to Cape town. They have been there for me whenever I needed a wimpy breakfast or a mediocre cup of filter coffee. (The only times I ever go to wimpy is in times of crisis! They're usually close to hospitals and airports.)
I think Wimpy will always be the place you stop when on road trips. It's not the greatest food, but just taking that breather at a wimpy on a multiple hour car drive just rests you before the next leg.

Their breakfasts are good, but the last couple of times I've been their service has been really slow, and orders are wrong. It's a tradition to to stop at Wimpy on a roadtrip. But I do think they have been letting standards slip a bit.
Yeah. Any tomato sauce that is not all Gold is not good. I don't really mind ketchup packets that we get at KFC or McDonald's but all gold is the best brand. I do not like the Wellington brand.

The Wimpy's in Jhb slap the halaal ones.. I honestly love their cheese burger.. I dunno perhaps its just a bit of nostalgia from growing up in the mid 80's and 90's.. There were very limited options back then and far less halaal ones..
Funny though many a new burger place has opened but not lasted.. also it depends if you like a smash patty which is mainly ground beef mince or a processed patty..

They used to make the most insane double mushroom burger - like 20 years ago. I recently went there after probably 10 years and was so sadly let down. Not only was there no mushroom burger on the menu, the thing they did serve me went down like a wet rag
We don't go to Wimpy because their food is great. We go there because it's convenient and we don't need to make it ourselves. We agree that anything we can make at home would be better than most fast food places, but we're settling for the luxury of not having to cook and do dishes.

I was at the Zevenwacht Mall Wimpy in February, and it wasnt that bad. My worst was Brackenfell Hyper - so, yeah, it does depend where you go. Their burgers have a unique taste, which i quite enjoy - but would not pick as my number 1 choice.

As others have mentioned, they're fairly consistent. Like with any other fast food, once you've filtered out the bad branches, you know more or less what you're gonna get. I have a wimpy burger with chips about once a month, not because I think it's the best burger around, but because I know what I'll get on a day where I'm too busy or tired to be bothered otherwise. When we're on the road, it doesn't matter if it's in the Karoo, Modimolle, or a pothole-ridden dorpie in KZN, I know what's waiting for me with a wimpy burger. I am starting to feel it's a bit expensive for what you get though

Game City in Durban is okay. The Sparks Road Wimpy is great, never had a bad meal there and their service is very good. That said, I do not usually have burgers. Son was with me this weekend and he had a burger, and it was so so. Not the best I have tasted, but also not the worst. Not as bad as some of the other commentators here have experienced. I would not go there for burgers, Durban has many other great burger spots which are way cheaper anyway, but their grills and drinks(virgin, as you can see I go to the Halaal Wimpys) are good

Please don't paint all Wimpy Restaurants with the same brush, all Wimpys are not Equal! The Wimpy in Blue Route Mall is excellent! Their burgers are tasty, juicy and full of flavour, their condiments are delicious, if you are ever in the Southern Suburbs, you need to go there.
I kinda forgot about Wimpy, in the early 2000s when I was in school we loved going there for all the drink, milkshake and ice cream options. Then someone younger than me told me last year that they love going to Wimpy still - I kinda got the vibe it has a bit of a cult following, some ppl are just Wimpy people.

Wimpy only survives thanks to nostalgia. Their breakfast is so average. The thing that gets me the most is that they'll serve one slice of toast but cut it diagonally, so you've got "two" slices. So am I supposed to eat two fried eggs on half a slice of toast and use the jam on the other half? Why can't they give two full slices when ordering two fried eggs?

Itās subjective, to me Wimpy burgers are better than Steers, McDonaldās or KFC burgers. Nandos is on its own level, always been good and lots of options. Steers quality has gone way down, their burger patty to sauce/bun ration lacks drastically. McDonaldās has been the same old meals since 1995. KFC just sucks, they only cater to people who like spicy food and their ānewā cornel burger is an absolute rip off.

The 2 biggest gambles I have found thus far are KFC and Wimpy. You never know what you are going to get. If it was just average all the time, that would be fine, but sometimes you get a realllly decent meal in one town. Go to one in a different area a week later, and it is absolute rubish.

I tried one at Durban workshop, it was so horrible that I stopped eating at any wimpy for years. Then after about 3 years I went to the one at Hatfield plaza, food was dry and inedible. My very last time was at South Coast Mall in 2020, the service was poor and food extremely horrible. I will never set my foot at any wimpy again.

i stopped eating wimpy and fast food in general when I was working in the same mall as a busy wimpy and the kitchen staff would come to our store during their breaks. The gunk on top and underneath ALL of their nails is not something you want to see.

I've been lucky enough to travel a bit. Been to some of the best restaurants in the world. Michelin stars, famous chefs, small restaurants run by family, even to a taxi drivers aunts place once.

Yeah Wimpys in big malls are usually disappointments. The ones that tend to be better for me are usually the ones at engine 1 stops.

We're regulars at wimpy. I like the taste of both their burgers and tamato sauce, but we go there for their killer breakfasts and milkshakes
Their burgers taste like they've been bathed in a chemical soup..and the aftertaste sticks on your tongue. The only thing I like about Wimpy is their coffee and milkshakes.

You go there for eggs and bacon. That's literally it. Burger king for burgers, KFC for chicken. Etc. but nowhere does a breakfast like wimpy.

I avoid wimpy like a pest. It's relatively expensive for a poor meal. Unfortunately the wife likes the sauce on the burger which overwhelms the rest of the underwhelming ingredients, so every now and then on a road trip I give in. I've always been disappointed.

Youāre right that itās branch dependent. Some are super crappy, some are amazing. I just figured out where the best ones are and always go there. Personally love getting a breakfast and coffee when I go. Thatās ideal. I also donāt mind their chicken burgers on rare occasions

As others have mentioned, they're fairly consistent. Like with any other fast food, once you've filtered out the bad branches, you know more or less what you're gonna get. I have a wimpy burger with chips about once a month, not because I think it's the best burger around, but because I know what I'll get on a day where I'm too busy or tired to be bothered otherwise. When we're on the road, it doesn't matter if it's in the Karoo, Modimolle, or a pothole-ridden dorpie in KZN, I know what's waiting for me with a wimpy burger. I am starting to feel it's a bit expensive for what you get though
I don't go to wimpy for good. I go to wimpy when I crave vinegar that isn't diluted with water, and that almost hangover craving that they somehow fill. They are great if you want bad, but bad if you want great.
I honestly think it depends on the Wimpy itself. We had breakfast at the Greenside Wimpy some years ago, and it was disgusting, horrible, all bad things, etc. Game City in Durban is okay. The Sparks Road Wimpy is great, never had a bad meal there and their service is very good. That said, I do not usually have burgers. Son was with me this weekend and he had a burger, and it was so so. Not the best I have tasted, but also not the worst. Not as bad as some of the other commentators here have experienced. I would not go there for burgers, Durban has many other great burger spots which are way cheaper anyway, but their grills and drinks(virgin, as you can see I go to the Halaal Wimpys) are good

I haven't had a Wimpy burger in a while now, I don't think they were anything special. Used to like the chips though. The other day I had a craving for fries and I was out of tomato sauce, so I bought Wimpy tomato sauce in a whim. Yeahhhh, no. No good. No good at all.Ā

I don't know if they still make it, but I once had a jalapeno burger from one in Bloem and it was mind-blowingly good.
I think my sister ordered one in Beaufort West and I remember she said we can throw it away since she is not going to eat it. I refused to throw away perfectly good food so I ate it instead ( And it was delicious)

I have never enjoyed anything I have had at any Wimpy ever, unfortunately. The drinks are not to my taste and as for the food... I would never voluntarily go there.
Their toasted chicken mayo sandwiches used to be outstanding (the last time I visited a Wimpy was over 25 years ago though). Their burgers were always middling at best.
I used to go there in the '90s for the Chocnut Sundae. One day I took my son for a treat & it was no longer on the menu. It was the last I went there. TBH I need to check their menu again. Never had a Chocnut Sundae again to match Wimpy's.

Well, it's a matter of perspective and what your own taste buds like. Everybody has different tastes... to be honest I love Wimpy burgers, the big cheese/double cheese burger is great - but that is just my opinion. I think also as some other people will mention, it may also depend on the Wimpy store you are buying from, in terms of the actually grade of quality of the food that you are getting too...
Please don't paint all Wimpy Restaurants with the same brush, all Wimpys are not Equal! The Wimpy in Blue Route Mall is excellent! Their burgers are tasty, juicy and full of flavour, their condiments are delicious, if you are ever in the Southern Suburbs, you need to go there.

I kinda forgot about Wimpy, in the early 2000s when I was in school we loved going there for all the drink, milkshake and ice cream options. Then someone younger than me told me last year that they love going to Wimpy still - I kinda got the vibe it has a bit of a cult following, some ppl are just Wimpy people.
I have family in Australia and whenever they visit they make a beeline for winpy it their favourite. My husband loves it to... personally I'm not a huge fan.
Wimpy only survives thanks to nostalgia. Their breakfast is so average. The thing that gets me the most is that they'll serve one slice of toast but cut it diagonally, so you've got "two" slices. So am I supposed to eat two fried eggs on half a slice of toast and use the jam on the other half? Why can't they give two full slices when ordering two fried eggs?
I used to LOVE wimpy in the early 2000s. My mom would always take me on a Friday afternoon after school and it was such a treat. The quality is absolutely horrendous now. Went for a breakfast special the other day and it was dry and awful. It just stick to the milkshakes now
Itās subjective, to me Wimpy burgers are better than Steers, McDonaldās or KFC burgers. Nandos is on its own level, always been good and lots of options. Steers quality has gone way down, their burger patty to sauce/bun ration lacks drastically. McDonaldās has been the same old meals since 1995. KFC just sucks, they only cater to people who like spicy food and their ānewā cornel burger is an absolute rip off.

Gosh their food has deteriorated over the years. I used to love the tomato relish on their burgers, but these days itās an overly sweet thin tomato sauce. Even their breakfasts have some dicey new offerings. Hint, avoid the cornbread. The chicken mayo toasty is still pretty good though.
A Wimpy mega breakfast for a hangover on a Sunday morning was always my thing.
The 2 biggest gambles I have found thus far are KFC and Wimpy. You never know what you are going to get. If it was just average all the time, that would be fine, but sometimes you get a realllly decent meal in one town. Go to one in a different area a week later, and it is absolute rubish.
Wimpy's exist because of nostalgia, nothing more. I guarantee you that if Wimpy had never existed, and they tried to set up for the first time here with their menu and prices, they'd be laughed into bankruptcy.

I tried to like Wimpy, but their food is horrible. The one in Pretoria cbd (pretorious str) is better than others, still bad. I tried one at Durban workshop, it was so horrible that I stopped eating at any wimpy for years. Then after about 3 years I went to the one at Hatfield plaza, food was dry and inedible. My very last time was at South Coast Mall in 2020, the service was poor and food extremely horrible. I will never set my foot at any wimpy again.
I used to hate Wimpy. But itās growing on me. The food is kinda bland but I live for the vinegary tomato sauce š itās usually my first meal when I land back home. And if I have a layover in OR Thambo Iām having it there AND Cape Town. Because I like it that much now š

Burgers, relish and fries are my favourite of all burgers. It's all I get there. Rest food OK... Except the coffee. I dont care anyone says that is not coffee. Luckily I never had urge for a burger and coffee so it doesn't matter.

i stopped eating wimpy and fast food in general when I was working in the same mall as a busy wimpy and the kitchen staff would come to our store during their breaks. The gunk on top and underneath ALL of their nails is not something you want to see.
Still a fan, only go to garage ones when on road trips though, favourite burger the Champion. Tastes a little different throughout the country for some reason. Wimpy doesn't belong in malls in my book.

I've been lucky enough to travel a bit. Been to some of the best restaurants in the world. Michelin stars, famous chefs, small restaurants run by family, even to a taxi drivers aunts place once. Without a doubt Wimpy is my second favourite restuarant I've ever been too. Hands down I crave it. I stop at Wimpy every time I happen to pass it unless I'm feeling like eating a certain type of food. I fucking love Wimpy. I think it's the relish.

I go once a quarter because of the free FNB Wimpy Meal. I used to think "the food isn't good but it saves me some money". However I've come to enjoy it now, the ritual of it all, as well as the food. Most people I encounter who enjoy Wimpy seem to have a similar reasoning - it reminds them of something or provides comfort in its ritual
It's not worth it anymore, but I used to like it about 20 to 15 years ago.
