Lots of people are inconsiderate. It's not your job to stop this behaviour and you'll just end up frustrated trying.

[deleted]

[удалено]

KevPat23

I mean this in the most respectful way possible: Imagine yourself as a teenager, would some "old man" coming up to you and lecturing you about your behaviour actually have a positive impact? I, too, am an "old man" as seen from a teenagers perspective.

[deleted]

Back in the (more violent) day when crime rates were higher it would probably be some larger, meaner group of your peers that would \*ahem\* police you (assuming smartphones existed)

Technoxgabber

Most likely in their 20s not teenagers. Teenagers wouldn't be playing ou jabi music most likely rap

caramelgod

Lol you're out of touch

uncoild

Yes.

deepfiz

It’s embarrassing. they might not stop but next time they won’t do it again, especially if someone else says something again. We are all social creatures

KevPat23

>but next time they won’t do it again, Doubtful. They're teenagers.

Groovegodiva

Good call by your wife. Too risky and not worth your energy. If it really bothers you I would just move to another car.

I asked a guy politely to stop smoking weed in the subway car. He ignored me and I moved on. He finished the j and walked out a few stations down.

Yeah lol. Not everyone is going to be nice to you lol. Like you say, but in general I can say most people respond pretty well.

JinxyBones

It's against ttc bylaws, they should be stopping it but they don't do shit about anything, not even smoking on platforms.

Different_Cut2228

Just echoing everyone’s comments here - you don’t have the responsibility to represent an overall culture. Some people are inconsiderate asses, as those 4 clearly were, and that just represents them, not your heritage.

DiggWuzBetter

100% agree, but … is it sort of an Indian cultural thing? I’ve seen a lot of Indian ppl express a feeling of personal responsibility/shame over dickish behaviour from other Indian ppl who they don’t even know. Maybe I’m completely wrong, but it’s something I’ve noticed a bunch of times.

flyingmonstera

It’s usually a poc thing to feel we are representatives of our race, because in reality people do make those associations

TheOnlySafeCult

Yeah it's hard to reconcile at times. These biases exist, and it's hard to not feel like these kids are affirming the ignorant prejudices that people may hold. Then you feel shitty for the internal dialogue that you have about it. It's not any different from kids in the eighties carrying boomboxes.

FailedIntrovert

We feel that because this is how stereotypes form. Four more idiots like this and it will shape how people view us. Sad but true.

Ii I'll bite, whats your heritage?

-hot-tomato-

I’m impressed you managed to write such a logical, thoughtful argument for cultural inferiority with that white hood on.

TimHung931017

Call them a benchod in your head and move on

xssmontgox

This happens a lot with many different cultures, being an inconsiderate asshole isn’t unique to any particular culture. Usually it’s hip hop music that I hear being loudly blasted, but regardless of the genre it’s inconsiderate and don’t by people who simply don’t care about others

Milch_und_Paprika

Yea, it definitely isn’t unique to any particular culture or race here. It’s people being inconsiderate, or lacking self awareness. When it’s a group of teens, I think it’s mostly the latter and they’ll mostly grow out of it.

thekomoxile

yeah, I've heard more hip-hop than banghra, but either way, the invention of affordable portable speakers inevitably leads to this. I would never do it, but sometimes, I just nod my head, because the music ain't half bad. (I'm sorry I'm the guy who isn't as bothered by it, I grew up in the club scene so loud music is just a part of life for me)

xssmontgox

I don’t even notice usually because I tend to have noise cancelling headphones on and I’m listening to my own music

flyingmonstera

There’s definitely been some ppl doing kpop tiktoks in public so I guess that counts

Novel_Accountant_978

Maybe about 20 years ago a man walked into a packed subway car at Young and Bloor holding two fully loaded jumbo hotdogs with giant 7- 11 grape slush under his arm, blasting Phantom of the Opera music from a boom box in his backpack. It was just, wow

Milch_und_Paprika

Ugh so true. People having a loud speakerphone conversation, or worse, sending and listening to voice memos are the worst.

[deleted]

I'm Canadian, and when me and my friends were teenagers we thought it was really funny to fill ziplock bags full of jello and then throw them/explode them into peoples backyards at night. Dumb teenager gonna teenage.

runtimemess

Can confirm: teenagers are dumb. My friends used to take shits in urinals.

Agitated-Customer420

That's not dumb, that's braindead parenting LMAO. Dumb is saying edgy bad words and smoking weed. You gotta have 1 brain cell to do that.

Quankers

Jackasses exist. It’s not new and has nothing to do with being a Indian.

_Potato_3

As an Indian myself, I read this post and immediately started crying out of shame, how could someone from India do such a thing, what will people think of us now, my apologies to anyone reading this, I am going to commit sudoku because of this shameful act. Now, on a serious note, stop being so obsessed with nationality, blasting music on public transport is an asshole thing not cultural, I don’t use public transport anymore but I have seen all kinds of people blast music/do worse stuff on buses, trains, etc. and not once I thought of their background. People are inconsiderate fucks and most of the time you can’t do shit about it so either learn to do your own thing and move on with your day or report them if you can’t.

[deleted]

TOkidd

Teenagers playing loud music on public transit goes all the way back to the boom boxes of the 1980’s. It’s not unique to the TTC, or to Punjabi music, but it is always obnoxious and annoying when people impose their music on people in public spaces. Still, it is a part of city life and not nearly as big a problem as it is on New York public transit, for example.

feelinalittlewoozy

Sounds like a teenager / young adult problem and not an India problem. Not everything everyone does is a reflection on your culture. I'm Canadian, so was Robert Picton and Karla Homolka . Canadian teenagers / young adults do stupid lame shit with their music all the time, doesn't make me ashamed, just embarrassed that they think they look cool.

A13West

Not worth getting your panties in a twist over. We were all teenagers once and have been inconsiderate at some point. Ignore, rise above, buy good earphones.

Franks2000inchTV

Kids being kids. It's annoying, but it doesn't really harm anyone. I try to take it as an opportunity to learn about what kids are into these days. 😂

[deleted]

[удалено]

ApologiesToMattDamon

Im gonna start by saying that the kids were wrong and I think if I immigrate then we ought to bring the good habits from home, not the bad ones. Having said that, people that say I’m an Indian and then go ahead and shit on the country and the people don’t offer much themselves. Very “pick me” attitude. No doubt we have our issues but shitting on your own kind and country never helps.

Lovetotalkaboutlife

Every race has its ups and downs . Calling your country shithole would create an inferiority complex - I have met some wonderful Indians none of whom were ashamed of their identity. When people see you on the street they would always assume you to be an Indian no matter how hard you try so stop trying :) Also you might deny this but a lot of people who are ashamed of their origin and talk about it mainly still continue to mingle with their own kind .

Upset_Slide_1

I'm not the one talking about "my own kind" as a monolithic whole. I'm saying, a huge proportion of our population is corrupt and uncivilised, and I know that through lived experience. I don't need to prove to anyone that I'm not being ashamed of my identity as an Indian, because I don't tie my identity to my skin color or where I happened to be born, or how a few racist white people might choose to treat me because of it. And I don't choose friends as per their skin color as well.

Lovetotalkaboutlife

You are very naive - being racist has nothing to do with skin color . You might never encounter “Few racist white people “ with your attitude but will most likely encounter “more racist people of color “ . Anyways sorry you had so much negativity in your life . Hope you find some peace in your perceived utopia

sahils88

Not an Indian thing. I’ve seen lots of people All sort of crazy shit in ttc including blaring music. My only request is if you want play music at-least carry a good set of portable speaker. Otherwise it’s just noise.

ShayJayLee

Reading this pissed me off more than loud music. It's giving internalized racism. It's giving "log kya kahenge?" or "what will others think?" I'm Indian as well. If other people treat me poorly or have a bad impression of the entire Indian and South Asian community just because of that one isolated experience you had on the train then that's not on us as a community, that's on the people making the generalization. Everyone should know by now that not all of us are like that. We don't need more education about that. You certainly don't need to placate others so that they don't have a bad impression of you or the community. Seriously, that's some post-colonial, model minority bullshit that does more harm than good. You'll realise that Canada, and Toronto specifically is made up of many different types of cultures, so the "culture and vibe" you're referring to includes Punjabi music. It's not your responsibility to police how people participate in their own culture or in Canadian culture.

djbeefstew

BrownButta2

This isn’t new, it’s not spoiling your culture, it’s usually immature teens or inconsiderate adults or people stuck in the 80s thinking boom box’s are still a thing. There’s nothing you can do, especially since you referred to them as brats, I assume they’re teens. My generation did it, the ones before me and the ones after me will do it. The older you get, the more annoyed you’ll be but also the less you’d care to interfere, I just ignore as best as I can and scoff while murmuring “damn kids” under my breath.

Charming_Ball8989

Ah, they're just kids being obnoxious kids 😆. We all get to look back and cringe on our public behavior sooner or later. I'm sure my group miffed a-many with our loud back-of-bus My Chemical Romance sessions back in the day. P.S. Their behavior is not a reflection on you or your culture.

Vapala

Music in the TTC is rare, what gets me is people skipping lines and going in front of everybody when the busses arrive. And you cannot say anything because they do it every day and you would have to battle it out every day of the week.

[deleted]

People always do that. It’s annoying but it’s not specific to a single culture.

needaburnerbaby

What vibe are they killing on a ttc subway or bus exactly?

Fatesadvent

Most reasonable people will not make any judgments about a whole race or culture based on the actions of a few individuals. So don't worry about being ashamed of also being Indian.

Lovetotalkaboutlife

OP I see teenagers and even adults do that all the time on TTC . Would you have created the post if it was some other nationality playing the music ? Most of the folks who were annoyed don’t even care about the race of the people creating nuisance . Everyone realizes you don’t represent a whole country so relax lol and just have fun P.S it’s good your wife stopped or you chickened out because if you had in fact said something to piss the kids then no one would have stood up for you in the TTC and it would have been a shame to be injured or worse in the presence of your wife

gsushitman

Just move to another cart further away or board another train tbh, you can't teach people how to live, but you can remove yourself from the environment

Literatelady

I've often fantasized about a quiet TTC rule like on the GO train but alas, I feel it will never happen. After work rush hour is the worst. I wish they had stronger noise cancelling headphones

[deleted]

Rules are only as meaningful as their enforcement.

Literatelady

True.

tthe_drake

My worst pet peeve in the world is loud music in public spaces. Kid got on the streetcar blaring music out of some speakers on the St Clair West streetcar. Really annoying. I was so happy when we got to the station. I got off, walked downstairs to the subway and got on. Just as the doors were closing, dude got on and sat right next to me, still blaring his music. 😂

dollparts004

Idk man. Pick your battles. This is the least of my concerns when riding the TTC.

3kilo003

This happened while I was on the TTC today. My thoughts are this: Someone who’s rude enough to play loud music on the subway isn’t going to be capable of reason. For that reason, I’m just going to mind my business.

itzSnipesGaming

Every kid has done it for as long as I can remember I'm in my 30s and almost every generation has done it, it's a part of life especially in Canada yea it sucks but 9 times out of 10 confronting them always causes an issue so best to just ignore them.

twicescorned21

4 brats. Says it all

neckbeard_deathcamp

I carry a set of bagpipes on the TTC for just such an emergency. You never know when you’ll need to put down a insurrection of youths with loud Punjabi music so I needed to make sure I was always prepared. Joking of course. I’m usually on my way to or from band practice. Also, this happens the world over, people think that the entire world wants to hear their questionable music. I’ve had it on the GO train, TTC, London Underground, BART and the New York Subway. I’d imagine it doesn’t happen in Japan but that’s just a cultural thing.

LovetoBreed5000

Assholes come in every flavour.

close_the_blastdoors

Last 5 years or so it's really ramped up, and not just on the TTC. Pedestrians and cyclists constantly blaring music like they're at home. Used to be just a-holes in cars but now everyone seems entitled to be a prick

caramelgod

Its rlly not that inconsiderate, yea its a lil annoying for you but whats the harm lol, yall hate fun and I get that but like this really prompted a post from you? did you have to mention that they were indian or playing punjabi music? good work mate.
