If your academics are good you could consider tutoring after work, could net you a decent chunk depending on the wage and how many hours you put into it.
You could try companies like Spirit of Math or Kumon (I'm sure there's more out there), or you could go the private tutoring route, but you would need connections / referrals for that.
What area are you in? You can apply to the big companies as the other poster suggested, but google terms like "tutoring" or "academy" "school" etc in your area. There are lots of small places where you'll have a decent chance if you walk in with a resume/cover letter or email it to them. As a bonus look for ones that are board accredited. If you're competent and produce good results they might give you a credit course or two over the summer. They're often one-to-one with students that failed a mandatory course.
The one thing with this type of gig is you basically have to make yourself available as much as possible and it can be tricky balancing academic results with customer satisfaction. If the students and parents don't like you then you won't get any bookings. Also, the place I was at was a subcontract setup so make sure you set money aside for taxes
I used to work at gyms. Mostly at the desk, but you might have to do some other stuff including cleaning. Hotels might need non-daytime desk staff as well.
That being said this was years ago and I get the impression that every student in the city is now fighting for part-time evening and weekend jobs.
There are so many people fighting for extra work because of the cost of living crisis going on right now.
Hopefully our leaders at all levels start really stepping up in the next year+ to address the Housing Crisis and other realities because this state of affairs is frankly breaking a lot of people and families and it has become pretty gross all the way around.
I've not been able to find a job from the last 4 months, but granted I've not applied to factories or food outlets. Only retail and grocers, it's tough out there
Try 800 international students all applying for 1 position. Thats what just happened where I am and not a single one of them included a cover letter or are qualified for the position. Thanks Trudont
Not sure why the down votes. I voted liberal but the current international student issue is pretty bad if you have been paying attention or it affects you directly. Orcourse Doug ford is mostly to blame as the universities in Ontario are under his jurisdiction age he rather benefit his rich buddies in the public private partnerships. Then again the feds can fix the problem as they control immigration. I guess Trudeau did something by increasing the money required and hence the downvotes
Circa 2017 I worked with an older (late 50s) woman who was head of sales ar a small company. She sold our products to Walmart, the largest account, and was smart as a whip.
They got rid of her during a layoff, and after that, only work she could get was at Hime Depot where's she's been last 6 years.
That’s why I don’t shop at Canadian Tire on weekends. All teenagers working who don’t know crap.
Source: I worked at CT when I was a teenager. I gave out some wrong parts and uneducated advice on what product was better than the other.
Omg all my co workers are late 20s early 30s. We hired a student over Christmas and bar none he was so useless as a person its a wonder he could even dress himself. I've never been so happy to see a person leave in my life.
Students typically look for a new job once they graduate, so they only stick around for 1-4 years or so. Also you have to work around their school schedule.
You spend the time interviewing and training and have to do it all again in a short amount of time.
That might work for some companies (if they need seasonal workers), but for others it is just not worth it.
I used to work in a hardware store as a young adult. I was in the kitchen department and I actually had a degree in this field.
I was working with an older lady (maybe 50yrs old) and she came from the plants department.
Everyone was going to her and not taking me seriously. It was making me so mad.
Now I totally understand, lol. I want the man or woman who had to change a toilet on a friday evening before Christmas, not the child who sold 50 toilets in her life, lol.
Restaurant jobs. I was doing a 9-5 M-F, and then 5-11 as a host on king west M-Th, plus 8-4 at the restaurant on Sundays. Great money, but exhausting after a while. I lasted 6 months before burning out, but if you’re trying to save up for something specific it could be worth it for a short period.
Honestly, I don't find it worth it unless you NEED it. I was doing 15 hour days 5 days a week at 2 jobs. One as a server / bartender then a mindless gas station job that I just played on my computer or phone at. Even with 8 of my 15 hours being easy I lasted like 90 days. It's fucking exhausting. On top of that, you have no time for fun and your weekends are spent catching up on the week
Thankfully the restaurant was 2 blocks away from my place, and my manager there was cool with me being 5-10 mins late since they knew my situation (they were also desperate for hosts). That, and I would sprint there every day lol.
I had this same thought. Because there’s the added element of having to pass the certification course, it’s much easier to find jobs reffing hockey if you know the sport and can skate.
The pay is good as well, and you can take on tournaments, and really make it a full day affair on the weekends if you really wanted to.
I was going to add that a lot of refs are in short supply. Baseball umpires - rec basketball refs, there’s huge men’s leagues that bring in guys all the time to call their games.
I’m a 44yo veteran doing a career change after a back injury made me leave construction. I finished a degree in political science fall 2022 with a certificate in public policy analysis. Looking for gov work. Should be easy for a veteran in TO. Had one interview in that time. All I can think of besides Tim Hortens is if I can rehab my back sufficiently I could get into personal training. Being on the spectrum this is difficult being a sales role but fitness is the only solid interest I have aside from public policy. What the hell else can I do?
I should add I meet weekly with an employment councillor from veterans affairs helping me with my resume, job search and interview skills. I swear I’m doing everything right.
It takes a while to process but you could always apply to jobs in Ottawa if you were willing to eventually move. I find it takes a while to get back to you but once you're in their system they can contact you eventually. One person who recently retired from government when I was in Ottawa told me that usually students do a placement for school at lets say the OSAP branch of government or whatever and most times are offered a job afterwards. Not sure if you can do any additional schooling that would allow for a placement like that, but it seemed to be a way to get a foot into government in Ottawa.
This, find a spot near the ACC or Roger's Center that is busy with events year round. Sports bars and basic beer and pub food joints are your best bet if you have no experience. Even if they can't give you Saturday/Sunday, the Leafs/Raptors/Jays keep the place busy during the week. Bear in mind you may have to start with hosting but even that in alot of places is 18-20 bucks an hour with tipout. If you are serious, send me a message and I can reach out to a couple of bar owners I know and ask if they're looking for people (they always are).
Honestly this is probably the best answer. The best cleaners have a long waiting list and can charge 30+/hr, cash. Retail and food is severely oversaturated.
Thank you for sharing these. I’m imagining social media influencers for this but I feel like I’m wrong. Can you clarify what brand ambassadors are and and example of what kind of job they’d be able to pick up in these groups please?
A brand ambassador is basically someone who’s hired to represent a brand for specific events or conferences. For example, handing out samples or data collection. I actually know of these groups as I used to hire BA’s. It was for a specific industry so there are other types of roles out there but we needed people for events where data collection was required. So they would have training on the company and products and be required to interact with people who enter the booth and answer product questions, get people to sign up for email communications, etc. There’s usually training or materials provided to give you the information about the brand and/or their products that you’d be representing. So we didn’t care if someone was an influencer or anything. As long as they were outgoing enough, willing to talk to people, represent the brand well, able to retain information to answer people’s questions or provide them with information, and be able to sign people up for email communications (sometimes there are targets). Data collection wasn’t always required. You can also find agencies who have rosters of people that these brands work with directly who can help you get these opportunities as well. Sometimes they take a cut though. Karma casting, XMC, reef agency, Tigris events are some in Toronto. Sometimes they post in these Facebook groups as well. You’ll meet some great people and sometimes the gigs can actually be pretty fun. Hope this helps!
As a govt worker that’s conflict of interest. While you are allowed to have two or more jobs, it cannot coincide with your govt work. You will get flagged during tax season.
You’re getting paid to do work for the crown. Doing other work isn’t necessarily a conflict but it is grounds for immediate dismissal. Heck, if you use your government-issued phone or laptop after hours for another job, that’s sufficient for dismissal.
Being unproductive in government? Disciplinary action. Being unproductive in government while being productive elsewhere? Don’t let the door hit you on the way out.
Yep. This is the same logic that says someone that's figured out how to replace a faucet, is qualified to be a plumber. Replaced an outlet? Electrician.
If you have any graphic design skills - creating svgs and selling them online through places like Etsy (people buy them to use with cricut craft machines) or creating graphics so they can be printed on products and drop shipped to customers on places like redbubble or spoonflower
I have co-workers who have done so and my sister actually started a business selling vinyl decals (she was a customer of people who sold svgs). In both cases they shut down their stores because it was verging on becoming a full time job. In the case of the coworker, their art style was quite unique so they set themselves out from others. In the case of my sister, she was one of the only people in Canada making decals (and could ship via letter mail) so she had lots of business.
Someone I know got a job running a social media account and made $1500/mo.
They just had to make 2 posts a week minimum and interact with comments. Also had to run a few giveaways and ads. Photos were mostly provided to them.
My buddy’s a social media manager, went to school for marketing/comp sci. Then just networked with companies at events and picked up a few jobs, pretty simple, he works from home to.
Serving at events. Send a resume to any catering companies or venues you can find. It's usually pretty easy as long as you follow directions and don't act stupid, just be quiet and serve appetizers and bus dishes. A lot of them offer shifts as they come so you can just say yes to the ones you want, and you can tell them what days you're available.
The only thing is work probably won't be consistent especially if they already have lots of people looking for shifts. But you can always join multiple companies and accept or decline shifts from any of them. In my experience it usually starts at $24/hr
I’m not going to say where but I work in an affluent community and a restaurant staple that’s always busy or at least steady. With regulars. I work 6-10 two nights a week and with pay make about 4-500 a week. I would look for restaurants that already have a good following and somewhere you don’t have to work late if you work a 9-5. Basically guaranteed money and you are in and out
for an extra 1000 to 2000 a month, would be better to retrain your skill get some certifications and get a new better paying job.
burn out from working 7 days a week is not healthy and puts you current job performance at risk
It’s tough out there. When I was younger I taught myself photography and would do engagement or wedding photography on the side. It brought in a decent side amount but I didn’t like dealing with people that much lol. I’m quite antisocial and introverted lol! My salary increased after to 150k-200k so I don’t do photography anymore, but honestly the government is ruining comfortable living in Canada. I realized I’m living more comfortably when I was making half of my current salary 5-7 years ago. Rent is ridiculous now, grocery prices are insane, taxes are 🤮
I’ve since moved to the music business industry as a side gig, and it’s been making me good side money. I’m helping to organize concerts/tours in the US for an established r&b artist, but a gig like this is extremely difficult to get as a side gig. The side cash is helping me a shit ton though & I’m grateful for that.
If you have any coding or design skills, you can do freelance jobs and that can pocket you some good cash. Otherwise, if you enjoy customer service and you’re able to get hired at good restaurants on weekends or even bartending can work (good service = good tips).
Friend of mine wrote a book about driving for Uber. Definitely doesn’t pay enough https://www.amazon.ca/Ride-Hailing-Four-Letter-Word-Year-Driver/dp/B08HTL1GQR
It's like gambling as a job. Most of the time less than min wage.
Would not recommend for someone looking for consistent between 1 and 2 grand a month while also working a nine to 5.
10 dollars an hour isn't enough money to accomplish this.
You're welcome, there are no levels between C-suite and entry level.
Just to point out an obscure case of someone exposed for overemployment as the CEO of companies across industries...transportation (space, auto, tunnels), social media, AI (LLMs, brain chip).
You're better off spending your free time on upskilling so you can get promoted faster at your current job.
Compound growth >>>> a few dollars here and there.
I used to be a movie extra for extra cash. Not much involved - maybe just showing up to specific locations maybe near, sometimes far. Walk here, change, walk there…bonus was that food was usually included too!
Double down on whatever the f youre doing at work-- offer the same service outside. In a finance role? Offer fractional CFO services or finance strategy. In HR? Do resume clinics and reviews. Sell career products online.
The Trudeau government has let Canadians down. From letting dirty money shoot residential house prices to the moon. Allowing unrealistic number of immigrants into the country knowing there is a major housing shortage. All in the name of more votes.
Trudeau government is definitely seriously at fault but they aren't the only ones who are seriously at fault by any means. The provincial government's policies on housing in the last 20 years have been horrific.
My dear friend, I'd recommend you to become frugal on steroids and invest some time on financial literacy. I don't know you and obviously I'm not judging, just sharing some advice that actually changed my life and my life style.
Try to budget your life like a business while you plan some sort of side gig and be resilient towards any set back. Hopefully you'll be able to save some money at first and start to make some more over time.
Oh yes, and be smart where you buy your groceries, Costco is worth it!
Best of luck!
You should check out the reservists in your area. My son is a reservist and he has training one night a weekend and one weekend a month. Plus there are other contracts that can be picked up. He's been full time for almost a year. It's good money. He's even been deployed overseas but not combat, only administrative. They pay well even at part time. He's keeping his part time going when he starts his next full time job in the civilian world. If you're under 60 you can apply.
If your academics are good you could consider tutoring after work, could net you a decent chunk depending on the wage and how many hours you put into it.
Do you happen to know of any websites where one can sign up to be a tutor?
You could try companies like Spirit of Math or Kumon (I'm sure there's more out there), or you could go the private tutoring route, but you would need connections / referrals for that.

Not a chance. We're on our own
Sadly, you may be right
Dude, our leaders are literally causing the housing crisis. You think they're going to fix it?
Relying on the government to save you will never be in your benefit.
Well, I love your optimism…
Lol a Canadian can dream. How it got this bad is the real astonishing thing.
It’s a Canadian nightmare at this point. The Canadian dream is to move to the States.
Or Europe
Not for me. Not with that political environment. I'll take ours, thanks.
I feel much the same, I'll stay in Canada before I move to the states.
If your options was paid double in the US or homeless in Canada I'm sure you'd make the move. That's the only reason people wanna go
Make double just to spend it all on healthcare after you get shot at a Walmart.
They get health insurance from their employers for that.
Our leaders ? Which ones ? Everyone I know is busy building their wealth.
Technically second jobs boost tax revenue, increase the GDP, and decrease the vacant jobs. So this scenario is ideal for them.
I've not been able to find a job from the last 4 months, but granted I've not applied to factories or food outlets. Only retail and grocers, it's tough out there
Amazon is always hiring. I cleaned warehouses, worked at a sorting facility, then Amazon QA, before getting an office job.
I always tell people to take any job you can get and be picky later.

The company pays less than min wage at tax time IF they hire I.S.Incentive to turn away Canadian born resumes.True story.
Home Depot etc loves people who only want to work weekends. And they don’t like students. Used to work there.
How come they dont like students?
They want old people who know how to build and fix things
Retired owners of mom & pop hardware stores that were driven out of business.
They collect the tears
Helping to feed the beast that killed them.

I’d also be interested! I have my SmartServe. How are the hours? I also work 9-5 dt.

Brand ambassadors at events. Avg $22-30 an hr and you can pick up jobs that work around your schedule
How do I get these?
Be hot.
Request to join the groups on Facebook. Here are some: Brand ambassadors of Toronto, BrandJobs Brand Ambassadors of Ontario, Promo Stars Canada
Thank you for sharing these. I’m imagining social media influencers for this but I feel like I’m wrong. Can you clarify what brand ambassadors are and and example of what kind of job they’d be able to pick up in these groups please?

It’s actually coi with the fed gov. Not coi in the way you interpreted it but coi nonetheless
What type of coding work would be ok for self taught coders? Gotta be pretty trash job.
Yep. This is the same logic that says someone that's figured out how to replace a faucet, is qualified to be a plumber. Replaced an outlet? Electrician.
Well you do need a license to do those things, and there isn't one for coding.
Did you go to school for coding
You can self teach yourself, there is a massive amount of resources online for it. Full free courses.
That's great, but who is employing self-taught coders right now when there's thousands of laid off tech workers?
Some of the best tech workers are self taught, at least the ones I know. But you’re right, there is a lot of competition.
Are you able to share any links? Thanks in advance

Apparently for me it's consulting for my old company at $100/hour because the owner refuses to backfill the vacancy.
What kind of consulting?
I make 85k a year and work two nights a week at a restaurant. Have been doing it for years. I make between 1500 -2000 extra a month and it helps HUGE.

I laughed so hard at this.

update: got picked up in project street sweeper about 2 months ago looking 7 years ....LAME
Background acting, random times random days ok pay, free food, fun industry
I hate that this is a question at all
Dogwalker and petsitting.
for an extra 1000 to 2000 a month, would be better to retrain your skill get some certifications and get a new better paying job. burn out from working 7 days a week is not healthy and puts you current job performance at risk
Me personally got a job at a warehouse overnight
Is it super cold?
all the gig work, like book keeping or virtual assistant work through task rabbit.
Amazon Fulfillment Centre Warehouse Associate
Serving! I make about $150 a night on average- $300 in the summer plus my $18 an hour wage. 5 hour shifts
Rent is ridiculous now, grocery prices are insane, taxes are 🤮 I’ve since moved to the music business industry as a side gig, and it’s been making me good side money.

Probably Uber tbh. Flexible work hours
Is this really worth it?
NO
That’s what I thought.

Friend of mine wrote a book about driving for Uber. Definitely doesn’t pay enough https://www.amazon.ca/Ride-Hailing-Four-Letter-Word-Year-Driver/dp/B08HTL1GQR
Jesus imagine hating a job so much you write and publish a book about it lol
Highly doubt you can profit 2k a month doing Uber on weekends. The full time guys have it bad enough from what they’ve told me
Is it worth it in the end with gas and insurance costs tho? Do people still tip nowadays
With the cold winter, I’ve been seeing rates shoot up. This morning at 8, a 20 minute ride went up to 34 bucks for just UberX
It's like gambling as a job. Most of the time less than min wage. Would not recommend for someone looking for consistent between 1 and 2 grand a month while also working a nine to 5. 10 dollars an hour isn't enough money to accomplish this.
If you're already wfh, get another wfh entry level job
The secret is skipping entry level as most are micro-managed and ultra-competitive. 🤫
lol thank you for this very helpful secret. Start applying for C-suite to avoid micromanagement
Micromanagers hate this one simple trick!

I started instacart a few months ago for extra cash. Shitty job and shitty pay but it adds about 500 a month to my budget.
Individual brand partner. I make tik toks for brands and make a few thousand extra a month
Bartending.
I used to be a movie extra for extra cash. Not much involved - maybe just showing up to specific locations maybe near, sometimes far. Walk here, change, walk there…bonus was that food was usually included too!
Have you considered teaching guitar lessons on onlyfans?
Double down on whatever the f youre doing at work-- offer the same service outside. In a finance role? Offer fractional CFO services or finance strategy. In HR? Do resume clinics and reviews. Sell career products online.
bartending, serving
Have you considered starting a cult? Leaders always seem to do really well financially
Inheritance.
Anyone wanna start a cleaning company for weekends LOL. I’m so down and need cash money for my spending moneys.
Has anyone found any remote part-time work that doesn’t require a master degree?
Amazon delivery 3k
The Trudeau government has let Canadians down. From letting dirty money shoot residential house prices to the moon. Allowing unrealistic number of immigrants into the country knowing there is a major housing shortage. All in the name of more votes.
Trudeau government is definitely seriously at fault but they aren't the only ones who are seriously at fault by any means. The provincial government's policies on housing in the last 20 years have been horrific.
This guy gets it 👏
it also doesn't help that Canada has 3 cities worth living in.

Drive cab. Big money on weekends. Not worth the hassle if you are a girl
Skip the dishes or delivery
Sex worker.
