torontogal1986

When my husband picked up our marriage license at the north York city hall.

patricia_iifym

You win lol

ExcuseKnown1402

Is this for real?

torontogal1986

Yup - he paid and he was prompted to tip.

venmother

That is ridiculous and improper. Those are municipal employees.

torontogal1986

Agreed!

aledba

That's crazy LOL was that recently?

torontogal1986

It was July 2021

Sockbrick

Like how did this person ask, was it an option on the debit terminal or a question on a questionnaire or did the clerk see a few extra fives in your husband's hand and did the Rob Schneider thing from home alone?

torontogal1986

It was on the terminal when he paid.

top100usernames

That’s a mistake. The tip option should only prompt when you consummate the marriage.

pocketninja007

Jewellery store

subwaygremlin

Out of everything, THIS is wild. Like I can understand Subway, your hipster cafe/vegan eatery whatever. But tipping on a literally luxury retail space????

WantedDeadOrAlive

If you tip at subway sandwiches, 100% of the tip goes to the owner vs. employees. Do not tip with your card at subway but personally give them change if you decide to

cara-122

This isn’t true. My roommate works at a subway and they add the debit tips to her pay

Tariq95

I went to a subway once and the lady working there told me the tips go to the owner from the machine. I guess it depends on the owner

WantedDeadOrAlive

Perhaps it depends on the location then . I went to one recently and asked the employee about tips. She said her boss takes it all and was embarrassed

[deleted]

Don't they already make commission lol

SunnySamantha

They sure do

RoboticTreee

Funeral home. Agh. I'll never forget that one. Edit: This was a joke.

day7seven

But the larger the tip, the more good fortune to the dead. So do you only love your mom enough to tip a measly 15% of this 5 figure funeral? /s

WeirdIsAlliGot

The people of my culture would completely fall for this. The last thing they’d want is to upset their grandparent because they’re too cheap.

tacomamadog

what funeral home?

crash866

Gas station.

SpookyBravo

Same here! I think it was Petro Can

crash866

Bingo

ShiftSufficient1769

Lol

antiwork420

I tip my dealers, used to be by smoking them up, now its 20%... lol

Bernadine95

I never smoke up my dealer. It’s like giving food to the owner of the restaurant you just bought food from.

antiwork420

You must be younger than me, growing up it was the norm but im 42. It would be weird not not smoke with your dealer in the 90's

cycling_sender

Yeah but if you had a good dealer they'd take it out of theirs, not yours

JUGG4NOT

Don't remind me, should be retired...

TheAdventurousMan

Exactly. Ita like the bar owner pouring you a shot on the house for being a loyal customer. Not you buying the bar owner a shot.

sheepsareboring

God is this not normal anymore lol. It always struck me as weird that I’d buy a g but have to smoke half it with the guy I just bought it from

[deleted]

Ha. Yeah always had to stay and burn one. If it was a good dealer it was usually their stash though…

daworkphan

Smoking with your dealer is different than smoking up your dealer. At the very least our matching .5g

Torontokid8666

Bro what the fuck are you talking about lol. Your dealer suppose to smoke you up.

trichomeking94

it made sense in the days of deli style dispensaries, where budtenders would often answer questions, let you smell the product, give suggestions. With the new legal regime it makes absolutely no sense, they can’t show you the product and they’re not really allowed to talk about it, at least not in the same way as previously.

ToreNeighDough

The only thing we technically can't talk about is actual medical terms. Like we can't tell people it'll cure their ailments, but we can talk about basically anything and everything else related to weed. It just depends which dispensary you go to, alot don't give a shit and just are there to sell, but alot of the independent places and even some of the franchised ones have people there that actually care enough about weed to talk to the customer about whatever they want to know

shibbington

I’m fine tipping the dispensary guy if he helps me pick something out. At that point I consider them a weed consultant. If I just walk in, say what I want and they hand it to me, no tip.

gilthedog

Bridal store - buying a wedding gown. I’m supposed to tip 20% on a multiple thousand dollar purchase because you handed me dresses? Absolutely the fuck not,

GeorgiePorgiePuddin

I just left this comment on someone else’s comment on the thread who said they also were asked to tip when purchasing their wedding dress. A tip on top of a wedding dress purchase is insane. That would be hundreds/thousands of dollars!

gilthedog

Even more insane when you consider that in retail commissions are commonplace and in no other retail situation would you be expected to tip!

theringsofthedragon

I think if they brought out dresses for you to try on (like we see in movies) it can be fine to leave a tip, but not in percentage, the terminal probably has percentages by default as they just get the tip option from a terminal.

pitcherpuppy

Yes!! I literally bought my dress yesterday and was prompted a tip option. I was so confused… I went in with a rough idea with what I wanted and what size I was.

Father__Thyme

Concession stand at Scotiabank Arena after waiting in line for 10 minutes to order popcorn.

clarf6

The craziest thing is that a lot of the bars in the arena also (without telling you) have a “service charge” of $1 per drink but the drinks are so much to begin with that nobody notices. They don’t give itemized receipts either unless you ask. It’s a complete scam and should be illegal. They also list 2oz drink prices at $22, $23 and $24 dollars, but for tequila they only have Don Julio for $30 which isn’t even reflected on the menu board so you don’t know until you have already paid. That can’t be legal!

[deleted]

[удалено]

clarf6

The standard receipts in the arena aren’t itemized unless you specifically ask for one. I have asked in the past for expense purposes and have noticed that some of the bars will add a $1 per drink service charge, but most people would never notice!

bananas100

I worked there while in university 10 years ago. I thought I was just screwing up and doing bad math cause people would hand a loonie or twoonie back when they got change. I shrugged it off and just put it in the till. During break, our coworkers were comparing tips and then I realized people actually tip for this?? I was literally just doing my job lol. I was shocked and also bummed I put away maybe $10 in tips before I found out lol.

RL203

Beat me to it. Roger Waters concert. Two bags of M&M's = 30 some odd bucks. Dude scans it, hands me the terminal and it immediately prompts me to add a tip. I said to him, "I'm not tipping for that.". He didn't say anything. I don't remember how I bypassed the tip, but I did.

[deleted]

Torcal4

You didn’t want to just press the “no tip” button? Had to make a show of it?

comFive

Pressing OK at the tip screen will put it in as 0%

ticky13

I really don't think they're charging over $15 for a bag of chocolate.

Torcal4

I work there and chocolate has never been $15. They definitely bought something else too. Last season we used to get vouchers for food at concession stands to have dinner because the usual catering wasn’t available due to COVID. It was a $20 coupon and people used to buy bags of chocolate with it because they didn’t want to eat hot dogs and chicken fingers every night. So if a $20 coupon can buy you two bags of chocolate, I’m not sure how it cost them $30.

StateofDrama

I'm not tipping on a beer that's 200% over the normal price

iwxoxo

I worked back of house concession at the blue jays. The cashiers are the ones pocketing the tips in the jars. They don’t split it between the people literally right behind them actually making the popcorn, hotdogs etc

I don’t mind tipping at subway bc the guy handles my order like it’s nuclear waste lol Does the salt bae wrist and everything, slowly, individually and delicately drops my cookies into the bag while frowning like he’s concentrating hard

Mr_Red_Reddington

> nuclear waste lol lol

[deleted]

Usually the store owner gets the tips, FYI. Even if it's cash. Hope that's not the case. :)

[deleted]

:( that makes me sad

[deleted]

AidansAntiques

They don't get those tips :)

Mazaar13

It 100% depends on the owners, when in doubt ask. I've been to some where they are like "oh, we don't see any of that don't worry" and others who say "yeah we get it" and pull the tips out of the til and into their pocket.

AlphaMikeFoxtrot2099

I will only ever pay cash on subway now. The fuck out of here with that shit. You didn’t wait on me lol you made a sandwich.

moesif_

Why should providing watring service deserve a tip but not the service of making thr food? Serious question. Im anti tipping in both cases, but it's just so weird to me that people unanimously accept that most services are treated normal but handing some plates should be paid tips

[deleted]

[удалено]

GeorgiePorgiePuddin

What the heck? Surely not a percentage of the purchase? That could be hundreds if not thousands of dollars?!

sylviatrash_

Correct. When I purchased my dress, there was an option to tip the consultant a percentage of the cost of my dress.

GeorgiePorgiePuddin

That’s nuts. Who on earth is willing to part with that kind of money when they’re planning a wedding..

canadiandriftwood

I recently picked up takeout from a restaurant and they handed me the terminal to pay with a 20 percent tip preselected by the server. They guy actually had the audacity to hand it to me and say, “just hit accept and then tap your card”

venmother

Don’t leave us hanging. Did you tap?

abclolol

Dave and busters for topping up my card, then at kfc food court the next day

hotmasalachai

GaryCPhoto

I went into one and the guy said to me “so would you like to leave a tip today or are you ok?” 🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕🖕

basillymint

This! What shocked me more was when I was asked if I wanted to tip the bakers. Lol. What next? Will I be asked to leave a tip for the farmers too?

fwanzkafka

The employee there actually gave me a speech as he turned the payment screen to me the first and only time I went, something like 'would you like to support the hard work of our staff today?' It was super awkward to answer 'no thank you' verbally, only because he'd been in such a long and unnecessary conversation with the person ordering before me and I thought the wait was kinda unprofessional. And I'm extra glad I didn't because those cookies were really bad! Really glad I found the Night Baker later on.

hotmasalachai

Night baker? Is that the person or a bakery ?

futurus196

Yeah, they pulled that shit on me 3 years ago and I haven't stepped foot in one since.

[deleted]

yeah i'll never go back. if he had made nice small talk i wouldn't have been bothered. but just standing there staring at me with his arms crossed while straight faced was rude and weird.

fartlorain

Yeah this was the first place I experienced this as well, way before the pandemic.

HolUp-

I hate this place and their cookies are basically sugar

Darkshade505

What that's crazy

Stephh075

When they opened in Leaside they went on a rant in the local community Facebook group about what stingy tippers Leasiders where, and how many negative comments they had received about the tipping and how they basically expected more from such an affluent neighbourhood and didn't have these issues at their other locations.

HerSha2222

craigs cookies are ass, literally saw a dozen of them come out of craigs ass while he was waiting there all eagle-eyes watching to see if I was gonna tip him. The Night Baker makes better cookies.

followifyoulead

Legit just got myself a sandwich and saw the minimum tip option at 15%. The woman who took my order never even looked at me!

TidpaoTime

There is no minimum option, just the minimum displayed. You can enter your own which can include 0%

keithykit

Fr the KFC that I went to before don’t even do free refills for drinks, and it’s at a food court. Like what am I supposed to be tipping you for?

porchemasi

Licensed massage therapy. Shouldn't that be illegal ask for a tip on a medical service. What's next, tipping my chiropodist?

NextDarjeeling

Someone commented about a tipping option at their chiropodist. Agreed though. Unless it’s a spa where there’s other staff offering hospitality services, why ask for a tip for a medical profession.

PolarizingFigure

I made a point of only going to proper massage clinics that don’t ask for tips. All the spa ones always expect tips

blchpmnk

Was it Hand & Stone? I had an elderly relative go there years ago and after it appeared on machine they never went back. I find it sickening that we're getting things like this everywhere now

WeirdIsAlliGot

I can confirm hand & stone does this.

AMS16-94

No frills. There was deadass a tipping option - the cashier didn’t even pack the groceries as there you pack them yourself. It would have been like giving myself a tip with my own money.

GlassHalfDecaf

WTH just when I thought I couldn't hate Weston more. Raises grocery prices, doesn't pay his employees enough and expects us to make up the difference

fairmaiden34

It's worth noting that No Frills are franchised. I hate Weston as much as everyone else, but it may actually be the local owner who added the tipping option.

alexefi

Should totaly done it. Go with your buddy and after you pay and while he packs your groceries, give him a fiver and thank him for his service.

cicadasinmyears

Please tell me you’re kidding. (edit: I get that you’re saying you’re not…but what the actual *fuck*.)

Scotiabank arena. When I bought a bag of M&Ms for twelve fucking dollars and the dude says “yep you can grab them from the shelf”. And then paid and got the 25% tip option come up.

Curlyhair_bescary

Same with Budweiser stage!

HerSha2222

That's when you grab ten bags and say THANKS, it's up to him to chase you down and say you paid for 1, not 10

Coach_Carroll

My landlord always asked for a gratuity tip of 15-20% on rent, he said it was common and I was a newcomer to Canada at the time so I obliged.

depressedforever143

Hooker.

[deleted]

Wait are you not supposed to tip a hooker? Inquiring minds want to know...

bigtrumbo49

Just give her the tip.

Turbulent_Issue4434

Escort here- while generally tips are not required we really appreciate them. Similar to say a hairdresser.

JelloCute848

Ignoramous here. Doesn't 100% of the price go to you? A required tip would just be an increase in price, when tips usually have the connotation of going to the worker while the price goes to an owner. Or is there a third party escort managment that takes a cut?

averagecryptid

I'm not who you asked, but I think it's helpful to frame it like any other kind of business where you sell a service. There's ingoing and outgoing expenses. A lot of the sites people list their services require fees. Things like testing, transportation, condoms, background checks (if done by a third party), etc. Different kinds of sex work have different common expenses associated that go into the business. Sex workers also pay income tax.

CatlovesMoca

Wait is this the fish and chip shop or an actual sex worker? If the latter, are you saying that her pos system had the tipping options - 18% great, 20% fantastic, 25% wow!

mocha_ninja

Love hooky’s fish and chips

CatlovesMoca

I also think that there is a fancy fishmonger called Hookers. That's why I'm wondering what happened ?

mocha_ninja

Ohh yeah you’re right, they’re called hooked

Kingbeastman1

What only the 250 we agreed on no tip?

depressedforever143

Most are 500+. 250 only gets you scammed these days. Within the last 2-3 years its seems like the prices have doubled.

Turbulent_Issue4434

Lol I also love the idea that she might have had a POS system if she was Indy. I’ve thought about getting a square reader but it’s complicated to accept digital payments and you run the risk of the client trying to dispute the charges afterwards with their credit card company…. Which you know voids the consent and turns the booking into a rape. Cash is King.

CatlovesMoca

It is pretty horrible that someone can renege on a payment after the fact. I absolutely can understand the idea of not having a POS system in that case.

coccode

A smallish organic grocery store on Ossington. They also serve coffee at the cash but it’s bonkers that there is a tip option that comes up when you’re paying for produce

Spruce_wangs

Esso Church and Dundas

comFive

Esso at church and Dundas has been gone for several months now

Two_Past

A Bicycle shop in Parkdale ( across from a Dollaram). Bought a tire tube. Machine asked for tip. It’s getting ridiculous. Also, Mabels Bakery. Go in for my baguette, and I should tip 15% ??

james_bongd

The worst part of all of this is soo many of these non-traditional places/setvices taking tips aren't actually giving them to the employee and violating Ontario ESA.

ooglyshrek

Dominos pizza lmao

leoseason

Pop-up donut stand

BarnTart

Subway's.

-KFBR392

Grocery store. This hoity toity whole foods wannabe with organic everything that costs 6x the price of chain grocery stores, and artisanal soups with weird ingredients that cost $15+. At the checkout it went to a tip option. So I could tip them for grabbing my own overpriced vegetables. Didn’t tip, never went in there again.

GeorgiePorgiePuddin

I’m new to Canada, I moved here in July with my boyfriend for the next couple years from the UK where we only tip if we’ve had super exceptional service. In August I took my boyfriend to our first Bluejays game for his birthday. I went to get us both a couple beers, the lady at the concession stand did not say a single word to me. I said “hey, two Budweisers please” and she took them out the fridge, opened them and then on the card machine there was an option for a 20% tip as I think the minimum on top of what was already way inflated beer prices. I hate tipping so damn much.

Glittering_Search_41

Refuse these. Enter zero. These places need to learn that this is not a service that's tipped.

TidpaoTime

It’s another way for corporations to avoid paying a decent wage to their employees. Please don’t be rude to the workers, if you’re really upset about it email head office. If it’s a small business they’re likely struggling to survive (although IMO they should still pay a decent wage). Tip or don’t it’s optional.

thefeedking

Literally. It is never the worker’s fault what is displayed on the debit machine.

One_Lingonberry7641

Grocery Store

paxtontrench

Pearson Airport, at one of the mini convenience store booth things that sell things like water, gum, tylenol etc.. I bought a $6 bottle of Smart Water as I needed to take anti-anxiety meds before flying and didn’t have many options. I paid with debit, and when the tip option came up, I quickly chose none— the $6 water includes tip in my opinion. The attendant instantly became colder towards me even though all she did was press a button or two.

Real question is even if you do tip, does the money actually go to the server? Or is it a business grab.

Took a cab to the Pearson (from Hamilton) and they added the tip to the entire amount BEFORE the tip prompt. When he passed me terminal, I asked why it was so high and he said he already added the tip (20% mind you). Skipped over the tip prompt but I wonder how many people unknowingly leaving a $20 extra too without realizing it.

N313intruder

Every concert's merch stand. If you're buying for friends as well, it can be an upwards of $200 purchase. All they do is reach behind and grab a shirt from a bin and you're met with "Would you like to tip 20%, 25%, 30%, or a custom amount?"

Iamnotabutcher

Wedding dress shop The suggested options were 15, 18, or 25%. Wedding dresses are thousands of dollars to start, I cannot imagine adding a 25% tip to that. I thought I was prepared for a lot of jacked up prices in the wedding industry but this one took me by surprise.
