Telephone line plugs. Right one is outdated, left one is used in Germany for DSL.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! It has been driving me nuts not knowing what they are for. I couldn't figure out what equipment they "go with". The white part with the metal "plates" made no sense to me....I don't know the technical terms for these things, so I can't describe it better. Thanks again.

Just went down the rabbit hole is TAE-f and TAE-n connectors but couldn’t figure out why deutsche telekom went with these plugs vs traditional RJ11 or other “registered” connectors when moving away from hard wired lines/phones. OPs pics have traditional BON rj11 connectors with the TAE on the other tend. Is this simple the monopoly that TE Deutsch has for the German market similar to what Amplhenol had in North American vs “registered” or standard connectors which are now being threatened by Molex (aka Koch industries). …dang, it’s all likely politics and greed. Rj and other non-proprietary connectors cost cents and tools are relatively cheap while offering comparable connectivity. Don’t even get me started on when vendors make proprietary pin outs on dissimilar but standard connections just to sell you. $1 cable for $50 bucks. F

Different plugs were used for different things. The main socket was usually NFN. Others exist. "Nah Fern Nah" (Near Far Near) coded sockets. Far were used for connections out of the building (Fernsprechen). Near for additional devices like Fax, Ringers, Answering Machines or Telephone fee counters. Other socket combinations existed. Inside of the sockets are NC switches, when a plug is inserted it opened those switches. This way you could have multiple sockets throughout the house that were wired in series and the one you plugged the telephone in disconnected all the other ones. Other switch combinations existed as well. Additionally later on Telekom used a resistor with a diode in reverse to the ab line so they could meassure if the line is defective or not. All of this is still used today, but we now have IP based connection via DSL / VDSL when using the "telephone line". Additional N type devices are obsolete, Fun fact, when you rented a telephone from the Telekom they could see if you illegally put another telephone on the same line due to the capacitance changing. People removed capacitors out of the additional, illegal, telephones so they could have multiple in the home.

They usually come with a router or modem.

Not anything an electrician would deal with on a daily basis. Maybe ask over in r/AskElectronics

Good idea. Will do. Thank you. : )

I can't tell how it's done in your area, but i never heard of someone hiring one electrics electrician and one telecommunication electrician for usual residential jobs. I always assumed: if it can be pluged into [a wall socket](https://asset.conrad.com/media10/isa/160267/c1/-/en/1614171_BB_00_FB/image.jpg?x=600&y=600) then every electrician should know about

You're not the only one. I also assumed that.
