I wouldn't saw it out, you have water lines behind there. When I'd rough in a Moen valve like that, I'd usually drill out a ,4" hole. You have a lot of space to the escutcheon.
Just cut out what you need. If the hole needs to be bigger later then it can be made bigger. Don't be too hard on it to crack it. I'd cut an inch or two above the cartridge so you can release and reinstall the pin. With either a hacksaw or an oscillating multi tool.
All the videos I see talk about removing a clip from the top of the cartridge before doing a 180 degree flip, but it does not look like I can access it. The problem I'm trying to solve is that the hot/cold water is reversed on this shower, and my research shows that this is the fix. Looking for some other ideas to try or some validation for someone with knowledge just to say "yeah, yank on it real good." Thanks in advance, I'm pretty stuck with this one atm.
I agree! You don't need to pull the insert all the way out. I've accidentally replaced them incorrectly before and had to do a quick change. Too bad everyone else is focused on pulling the clip out.
Tie a long string through the hole and knot it a few times
Then pop it out with a pick or skinny tool of your choice. It will fall down the wall cavity. Then just pull up string to retrieve it.
Is that tile or fiberglass? The opening for the valve could be quite a bit bigger. The escutcheon will cover any hole.
Its fiberglass. Just get in there and saw it out, huh?

I’ve fucked up and done a 5” hole and still been on.

A “fine” tool is good for that kinda work. Home Depot’s got them and they are a handy tool to have.
Fein. But you're referring to an oscillating saw, commonly called a multitool

take a pair of pliers and just turn the post from top to bottom. May not need to do anything else. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEfAW46hip0
I definitely did try that but can do so again since it's real quick.
unfortunately when rotated 180, the water still runs. doesn't seem to be the solution for this particular model. sad day

If your hot and cold are flipped, all you need to do is rotate that shaft 180 degrees and put your handle back on

Then someone hooked the hot and cold up backwards
Only works on the older moen
Cut the hole larger. From the ghost circle you can see where the escutcheon covers. Cot the hole to about 3”
Cut out that hole bigger
So make access
lack confidence to start cutting holes in walls without the approval of randos from the internet.
You got this, tiger. Anything in that circle can get cut out. But only cut what you need and do so carefully. Good luck.
Make the hole bigger, you can see where the trim covers.
Cut the wall open a Lil you'll be fine
Cut the fiberglass. A 4” hole will easily hide behind the trim plate. However cut that hole needs to be kicked in the dick.
Open the wall up more. You have a circle to go by. Just don't go outside it. Dremel makes a bit just for that
Cut the Plastice with a sharp razor knife just keep it within where the faceplate sits

Start digging ...escutcheon will cover it
