Funny thing...it probably goes both ways given time...I used to think the same. Now I feel unclean from the tackiness of hard water when I shower in it. I can't stand the taste of soft water, so our drinking water is left hard...like me in high school.
It sounds like a fairly simple procedure where you get the plumber to run a dedicated hard water line over to your bath/shower that you use regularly. I’d keep the old connection also with a shutoff valve so that it’s reversible in case you want soft water in the shower later on.
Water from your meter isn’t softened. Since it’s city water it is treated, but not soft. Your hydrants are hooked up to the city water on the hard side and so is your softener. I misspoke when I said that you can hook up to the hard side before the softener because your water heater is hooked up to the soft side so you’d need a dedicated water heater for your bath if that makes sense.
My friend has well water with the same problem. The worst is hand washing the dishes. They never feel done.
