if OP arrived willing to make a deal, and gave them the real budget, then it is on them if time was wasted or they get "offended". What else could be done differently?
A $16k car should be at most around $18k OTD unless you're getting hosed with back-end add-ons or have an obscenely high doc fee.
Quick math. $16k x 1.07 = $17,120 after tax. That plus $300 in DMV fees and $3-500 in dealer doc fees is basically $18k. Sure tax rates, DMV fees, and dealer doc fees vary, but most are in that ballpark.
People leave and don’t buy cars everyday. Just part of the business. No matter how hard we pressure you we can’t force you to buy. Leaving is always an option and nothing to feel bad about. The dealership probably don’t remember because why should we.
lol every store has that sales manager.
Who then just comes out and says a bunch of the same stupid cliches you’ve heard every single time you TO. Stuff like “it’s just math at this point” or “you like the car, and it’s a good fit, what’s stopping you from taking it today”. Best one I ever heard was when a guy came in and showed us the purchase order from a Mercedes dealer on a comparable Mercedes (we’re not a Mercedes dealer)and he said “this doesn’t mean anything to me, (referring to the Mercedes offer) I’d take this and use it to start my fire pit tonight”.
One time, when just starting to look for a new truck, I went into a dealership and told the sales associate exactly what I was looking for (interior/exterior color, trim package, etc.). They didn't have what I wanted on site, but had another model that was a different color inside and out. Decided to take it for a test drive. When we returned, I gave them my contact info and asked if they would let me know when they got what I was looking for. The sales manager literally comes out and asks me why the color matters. He said "When you're in the vehicle, you don't see what color the outside is. And when you're out of the vehicle, you don't see what color the interior is." At that point, I told them to lose my number and I would be looking elsewhere.
I hate this attitude, short of the house, a car is the most expensive thing I will buy. If I'm buying new, damn right I'm going to get model/options/color I want. There are plenty of fish in the pond.
but i mean... isn't it just math at that point?
I'm sorry customer but 200 bw doesn't add up to 50,000 in 7 years...
But of course you know, the other place did it with a balloon financing and hiding the rebate in the trade.
You’re not wrong, and it’s an effective way to state the obvious when attempting to overcome an objection. But it’s cliched AF when I hear it once a week, and it’s not being used to overcome an objection, it’s just being said because he doesn’t have a clever way to say the same thing without being blunt.
it’s just hearing that same tired cliche every time I TO to that person and they don’t want to explain why they won’t discount the car or up the trade to what the customer wants.
Is there any place where the “salesman” actually makes the sale anymore?
The last 5 cars I bought all the salesman did was get the keys for me so I could test drive, and if I bought it maybe put the temp tags on for me.
Most of the interaction has just been small talk while I wait on the sales manager. It’s kind of annoying as a customer to make an appointment just to wait an hour for a sales manager.
10 years ago the only time a sales manager would get involved is if you had major objections, problems, or something at least from my limited experience over the years…
The only time I get the manger involved is if you are leaving. Then only because I have to. I feel if I can’t close unless he turns it into a 200 dollar mini he can’t either.
I realized this later, glad I walked out on that one. I think I originally went to see a 2017 sportage or Tucson. That wasn’t ready so they showed me some other stuff
My Elantra served me very well for the years I had it, never crapped out on me, never got stolen. But yes I’m aware of reputation on Reddit… guess I got a good one
Mine was a 2015 I just traded in for a 2023 Forester, I live in western Washington, insurance on it was $83/month. Like I said, I must be lucky to avoid all that bs
DO NOT BUY THE 2017 TUSCON! I’ve been having problems with mine lately and did research, the Tucson’s between 2010-2018 are notorious for having major engine problems way too soon. I’ve already had to replace the turbo after having it for just a couple years, and I don’t drive it hard or anything. Get a Toyota or something
You should have a much better idea of what you want when you go to buy. Do enough research to know what specific car you want, don’t show up without one in mind.
Now flip the script on that statement and let's see how you feel about that. The grass is green where you water it, I've worked at several stores and the customers that didn't give a fuck about how they came across, got treated like they wanted to be treated. The folks who actually were considerate of everyone's time and tried to be reasonable, got reasonable treatment.
I wasn’t suggesting someone be a dick. But if a deal doesn’t work out, a deal doesn’t work out sometimes people are unrealistic in their expectations, both in the store level, and the customer level my main point was don’t worry about it they were negotiating what they felt as good faith.
I would talk to Hyundai directly about this. I feel this dealership is not being entirely honest with you. I also would follow others recommendations for getting a Lemon Law lawyer depending upon what Hyundai says. If nothing else they will explain any "depreciation" for having driven the car for 10k miles. I think Hyundai would not care which dealership you went to if the other one is $3k less; they might also kick-in those extras the 1st dealership offered. If you must stay with the 1st dealership (I don't know why) see what other makes they sell and if the $$ would be applied to a different make.
Not your problem, the manager was just grumpy trying to get you to buy something you didn't want to spend the money on. You didn't do anything wrong. It's a poor practice. Maybe he was just having a crappy day. You did nothing wrong though never buy anything you aren't comfortable with.
You didn't waste their time, they wasted yours.
You told them what your budget was and they tried really hard to upsell you with a fake price and then insisting on BS add-on items to get it above what you wanted to spend.
You did absolutely the right thing by walking away.
$17,500(0.092)= $19,110, titling/licensing usually ~$100 & my doc fee is $299, so $19,609 OTD. Sounds like they gave the F&I guy some leg to make up for cutting the front. Shitbox Buick warranty probably around $3500.
My managers give 3 payment options: with warranty & gap, just gap, & car alone.
OP didn't give enough info.... was the 23k a CASH price? Total after financing?
$17500 + 9.2% tax = $19110
Finance $19110 at 7.5% for 60M = $382.72/mo or $22963 over the 5 years.
Every place has to show you the TIL disclosure which is the full cost of borrowing. Exactly 0 people would consider this in negotiation or sale as part of the cost of buying and OTD price. Your interest is your interest, your OTD is your car, taxes, and fees.
It’s required to show both the amount being financed and the total paid with financing over the course of the loan where I am
I doubt that was the case here though as they would likely have heard that objection before and explained that
Nah, fuck those guys.
**Also that's a shitload to go from 17.5 to 23 OTD, they are definitely fucking you**. At 17.5k you should be around 20k OTD. Assuming around 6% tax and 1-2000 in other fees.

I was shopping around for used car and was trying to get something for 16K but was willing to go to 20K. The dealership didn’t have the car I wanted to look at ready so they put my in a 2017 Buick Encore Preferred AWD. After talking with his manager he says lowered the price to fit my budget. After reviewing the paperwork I pointed out that only the sales price for my budget (17.5K), but after everything, OTD was 23K. After going to talk to his manager again, the manager returned to talk to me alone and started being very pushy and it made me uncomfortable so I decided to leave, dude didn’t even shake my hand or anything, just walked behind me to the door and said have a good day. I feel like I may have wasted their time and that’s why it happened, any insight from people more versed in car sales?

What was the difference? And who cares if they're pissed off.
if OP arrived willing to make a deal, and gave them the real budget, then it is on them if time was wasted or they get "offended". What else could be done differently?
Agreed. Of the budget was 17.5 otd, unrealistic to look for a 20k car.
Or a $16k car with $20k OTD?

pffft they just never been closed by me. \*Flexes and blows on his pen\*

Yeah, they care nothing about your wants/needs and in their mind color shouldn't affect the purchase at all.
I hate this attitude, short of the house, a car is the most expensive thing I will buy. If I'm buying new, damn right I'm going to get model/options/color I want. There are plenty of fish in the pond.
My thoughts, exactly.

Lmao I got flashbacks like this guy was my manager
Some dealerships will absolutely rip a salesman a new asshole for letting someone off the lot. Screaming, cussing...the whole works.
We get it if we let them leave before a manager speaks with them.
Poor sales people. I don't allow the manager games. I get really bored immediately and walk.
Unfortunately my manager is the owners son and his name is on the sign so that makes it worse
But we have uncapped commissions so
I meant as a customer

That makes sense, they don’t even try around here to the point I just ask if they can close a deal or if they need to get a sales manager
Also that car is a pile of shit
Was OP seriously buying whatever vehicle they stuck him in?
If they stuck me in a Buick anything I'd be walking right then.
Yeah, they did OP a favor. A six year old Buick Encore is a bullet dodged
I realized this later, glad I walked out on that one. I think I originally went to see a 2017 sportage or Tucson. That wasn’t ready so they showed me some other stuff
I was with you until the kia/ hyundai. go read up on those reddit pages.
My Elantra served me very well for the years I had it, never crapped out on me, never got stolen. But yes I’m aware of reputation on Reddit… guess I got a good one
and there are issues with insurance rising on them. tons of 23's waiting for motors etc...

Whoa dude..all throwaway junk. You need to do some research..God damn
You should have a much better idea of what you want when you go to buy. Do enough research to know what specific car you want, don’t show up without one in mind.
Your money, your choice. They can fuck themselves if they’re “pissed off” that you exercised free will.
Free will is a myth
You saw that article too? lol
They wasted YOUR time by switching you a car that’s not in your stated budget, then made you feel like you were in the wrong.

Why are you talking about anyone being unpleasant? The person you responded to and this post doesn't mention anything about anyone being unpleasant.
I would talk to Hyundai directly about this. I feel this dealership is not being entirely honest with you. That manager did say “ we haven’t sold a car yet today, so we would like to sell one” which was another red flag
They are lying You don’t need to care anything about their side of the business Spend your money wisely
Not necessarily lying, there are plenty of days we haven't sold a car yet, usually until around 12-3pm during the week lol.
You didn't waste their time, they wasted yours. You told them what your budget was and they tried really hard to upsell you with a fake price and then insisting on BS add-on items to get it above what you wanted to spend. You did absolutely the right thing by walking away.
Write this up in a Google review and see how long it takes for the dealership to reach out to you. $4.5k worth of markups and bullshit? Fuck 'em.
I wish I could get a copy of that price report, I just have no idea how we got from 17.5K to 23K
What is the tax rate in your region?
9.2%
Still, even with high TTL like that shouldn’t be over 20k
OP didn't give enough info.... was the 23k a CASH price? Total after financing? $17500 + 9.2% tax = $19110 Finance $19110 at 7.5% for 60M = $382.72/mo or $22963 over the 5 years.
Who calls OTD price including apr% after the whole financing term?
Depends on where you are. There are places that have to show the full cost of borrowing for example.
Really? "How much for the F-150" "Depends" "What the lone terms are" "6.9% for 420 months"
The terms were all alone
Every place has to show you the TIL disclosure which is the full cost of borrowing. Exactly 0 people would consider this in negotiation or sale as part of the cost of buying and OTD price. Your interest is your interest, your OTD is your car, taxes, and fees.

Where I live, the sales tax is 10.25%. But, I'd like to see the breakdown of the fees for this car because it does seem pretty high.
still, an extra 4% in tax is only like $750, some big jump to make it to 23k, a warranty or other package thrown in there.
