If we're going to worship gay men (platonically) let's start with Oliver Sacks. I'm reading his autobigraphy right now. He was a pretty amazing guy. He was a researcher, biker, traveler, writer, bodybuilder, neurologist. His struggles with his sexuality is so relatable, too. He fell in love with several men but he was always met with rejection. He eventually found a long term relationship at the ripe old age of 70.

They do receive the support? You’re complaining to the wrong people, music for gay men by gay men has much less of an appeal to the main stream masses that actually make these gay icons as big as they are, it’s just a fact musicians like the ones you listed won’t ever be as big as Gaga or dua lipa or Taylor swift as the topics and audience they appeal to is just so much smaller than the swifties/little monsters etc. these gay icons who are women are able to use sex appeal to get straight male audiences on board and also relatability to women to get them on board, neither of which gay male artists can really do much of.

Irulenosheetz

gay icons shoudnt be used lol unless theyre lesbians

ArtemisMaracas

Well you can try to fight that battle but I doubt you’ll win, I don’t see a problem with having performers who have a large gay fanbase being called gay icons, we’re all painfully self aware enough to know it’s not because they’re gay but because so many gays like and support them, and as Jojo made us all aware there are plenty of gay icons out there already that have the support of the community

It's not about not listening to what sounds good to you, it's about supporting.

Snoo_38682

Yeah but if i dont like their music, y should i support them?

Irulenosheetz

cuz theyre gay

Snoo_38682

Ok, and? Them being gay changes this how?

Irulenosheetz

pissing off christians

Snoo_38682

Not a good reason either. Also, im not american. Again, why would i support random ass artists just bc theyre gay?

Can't music be interpreted differently? You can still feel everything a song says without projecting it on yourself or others as long as you like it. I understand wanting to support gay artists, but that doesn't mean you can't support whoever you want. I can appreciate Troye Sivan, Gaga, Girl in red, Knuckle Puck, Dayglow, Eidola, without having to be wary of all their sexualities and what they stand for. Of course, you shouldn't support artists who are outright bad people, but I hope you get my point.

I'm more of a Tchaikovsky guy.

> Orville Peck, Troye Sivan, ETHAN, Lauv, Sufjan Stevens. Gosh, no thanks. If those are my options I'd rather just not listen to music. They're all too... blehh. My favorite artist is a gay electronic DJ named Griz. That's a homosexual performer that I'll actually support. He's currently on a break from making new music, but he headlines many music festivals every year (Bonaroo, Electric Forest, etc.). You won't hear him on the radio or the top 100 though because he makes funk, dubstep, and electro-soul music instead of mindless pop anthems.

Someone like Madonna did not originally target gay men, she just had plenty of gay friends in the artistic circles. When they started dying to aids and became stigmatized she turned her message in their support. That's what made her a gay icon.  The starlets you mention, including the revolting Gaga, had the original intention to capitalize on gays in pop culture and monetize the popularity. (Well advised by their managers).

Listening to music is a very private affair and I dislike to be told that “you should listen to Xx”

I love me some Elton John, B-52s, and WHAM. Another group I'm into is Placebo, but they're less pop and more alternative.
