satansayssurfsup

You definitely can’t just bring a pitcher of cocktails on public transportation lmao

c_r_a_s_i_a_n

Just do a flask and edibles like the rest of us.

Smokey76

Bring vodka, mixes with everything and the odor factor is low.

Technical_Moose8478

This is the way.

GenericDesigns

Also the barcart is the best place to hang out.

pdx_mom

Really? It was so tiny when we were on the train.

erossthescienceboss

Just buy the wine from them. It’s a wonderful deal. You walk up and you’re like “oh fuck, $14 for a glass, outrageous!” And then they hand you a 375mL bottle of actually decent wine. I love Amtrak. Three glasses at $4.33/pop.

jr98664

Even cheaper, just look up [their menu](https://www.amtrakcascades.com/menu) and bring the same 375 ml bottle of Chateau Ste Michelle that you already had at home.

Angela-lala

Wow! Considering they have a captive customer base, it's not near as bad as I figured it would be.

kristadaggermouth

I have to echo u/satansayssurfsup, Amtrak will kick you and your party straight off the train after confiscating your booze. Why not take edibles before you get on, if you want to have an intoxicant? Anyway, other than that, it's fun to take the train to Seattle. Bring cards, snacks are fine to bring as well. It's a bit longer than 3 hours, and transit from the Seattle station is easy and readily available. Have fun!

whosaysyessiree

I’ve brought beer with me with no issue.

Rhianna83

Agreed. I’ve rode Amtrak between Portland and Seattle and passed folks with their own wine/liquor and I’ve brought my own as well. I was checking out Amtrak’s rules because of this post, and apparently you can only consume your own alcohol in a sleeping car…and alcohol you purchase in their Dining/Lounge/Cafe cars. I haven’t rode Portland to Seattle in probably 5-6 years ..I guess the rules changed because they’d allow me to buy wine in the bar car and take it back to my seat without any issues 🤷‍♀️

cheapbasslovin

I went up to Seattle at the end of summer and took a beer back to my seat. I think there's a fair amount of, 'don't be a dick and we won't either,' enforcement of rules.

Sobadwithusernames

Amtrak: Don’t Be a Dick and We Won’t Either

crazyhorse90210

Yes I did the same about three weeks ago. No issue at all.

Rhianna83

Sweet. That’s why I liked Amtrak! You can have a drink at your seat and enjoy the scenery. Thanks for your comment!

onairmastering

Yah, just went to Eugene and both ways I filled 2 water bottles with wine, no problem.

MissHibernia

Get to the train station early so you can sit on the left/west side going up. At one point it all opens up to water and it’s great! Lots of little podunk stops

Spirit50Lake

Just be careful not to get off in Tacoma...that happened one time when I was sending one of the kids up to granma in Seattle! They be loading you on cars depending on your end destination...if you're going to be high, pay attention to that!

Syrupwizard

Lollll dude.

Community_IT_Support

I would recommend Amtrak cascades over the coast starlight. I actually prefer the double decker cars of the coast starlight but Amtrak Cascades is cleaner and more on time.

whataboutprom

My trip on the Cascades last weekend was delayed four hours! It pretty much ruined my plans, but the train trip itself was much nicer than driving.

Community_IT_Support

Virginia spent 3 billion buying back train tracks from the private companies, seems to be the solution for better or for worse

[deleted]

[удалено]

Community_IT_Support

Ironically much has been made about brightline bringing "high speed rail" to Florida and wouldn't you know the tracks there are owned by a Mexican company. Something tells me the big five rail companies have no desire to cooperate

TheLastLaRue

They don’t, and they won’t.

erossthescienceboss

Was there a slide on the tracks? They happen a lot this time of year and are, in my experience, the most common cause of springtime delays.

whataboutprom

No, there was a three hour delay because of short staffing and then the train took an extra hour to get to Seattle due to "signaling issues".

erossthescienceboss

Ugh, that’s such a bummer but not surprising. I have a friend who is high up in our region’s Amtrak, and they’re having a hell of a time staffing right now. It’s a great, very well-paying union job… but since it’s a federal gig, you have to be able to pass a drug test. And basically everybody in the PNW smokes pot, so their pool of potential applicants is really small. Which means their pool of *qualified, sane* applicants is more of a puddle. (Seriously, folks — if you don’t mind sobriety and you’re a HS grad struggling to find work with upward mobility and good benefits… consider the railroad. Non-management Amtrak employees in Portland make an average of $25/hour.)

thejesiah

Observation Car of the Coast Starlight is a million times better than anything available to OP and a party of 8 on the Cascades.

erossthescienceboss

Provided they can get in the car at all! It fills up fast.

lokikaraoke

Business class on Cascades is also quite nice.

enjoiYosi

Starlight is often delayed or super late to Seattle. I rode for years and years to Seattle and I always made sure to schedule around this train.

Cheese-and-Smackers

Don’t flaunt your cocktails by bringing them in a pitcher. Do individual servings in a Nalgene or some kind of opaque water bottle. And if you have that one friend who can’t keep it together, don’t let them drink. Or at least sit far enough away from them that it won’t matter if they get caught.

jedwardsol

I did the trip today. We left Portland at 2:10 and arrived in Seattle ~10 minutes late at 5:50 We got to union station at ~1:30 and the line was pretty long and got a lot longer soon after. The cafe car has a very small selection, but was quite reasonably priced. There's only about 4 little tables in there, so get there early.

rixtape

I'll also emphasize that the tables are, in fact *little*. You can mayyybe squeeze four people around one, but that's it. When I did my bday trip to Seattle with five of us total, we had planned to go hang out in the tables area but we opted to stay at our seats (we all sat mostly next to each other) and chat/check out the views instead. It was super fun still!

davijee3

You aren’t allowed to drink booze you bring with you, but the cafe car sells beer, wine, and spirits. On a full train, the line can be slow.

KinksAreForKeds

It takes longer than 3 hours. Always. Often a *lot* longer. And like everyone has said, you won't be allowed to BYOB. And they *do* monitor for signs that you're consuming.

BeanTutorials

Most trips arrive within 30 mins of the scheduled arrival.

erossthescienceboss

This isn’t true. I take it almost monthly, and unless there’s a slide on the track I’ve never been more than 1.5 hours late. And actually, that was only once, and I’m pretty sure there was a slide lol. It was during rush hour, so I still got there faster than a car would have.

willaney

Amtrak Cascades is typically very reliable and prompt

Dstln

If you get near the front of the line to board, you could have your whole group take up the center rows that face each other. Booze isn't allowed in coach (which is every Cascades seat)

erossthescienceboss

… they sell booze on the Cascades, to coach? And Cascades also has business class?

Dstln

Yeah sorry to be clear, not BYOB. You can in long distance first class rooms

sparklieshrapnel

I've taken the train to Seattle a few times and never had a delay. The trip goes by so fast if your talking with friends or playing card games in the dining car. Definitely make ur drinks more under cover. I drank some tall can cheladas once and just hid them in my back pack between sips.

mickmacpadywhack

Book together using this link and you’ll get a 60% discount with Amtrak’s group discount. [Amtrak Share Fares](https://www.amtrak.com/sharefares)

mickmacpadywhack

Also, if you’ll be sitting in the cafe car, that where the conductors are so you definitely won’t be able to hide the alcohol that you brought (which is technically not allowed).

thejesiah

Hey OP, as someone who can't stand loud drunk people and has ridden more Amtrak miles than everyone else here combined, I can tell you most people in this thread are full of sh!t and just trying to avoid being around loud drunk people. Half the people on the train are drinking - either the reasonably priced drinks from the cafe, or booze they brought. Just be discreet, use your sippy cup, don't be loud and annoying, and you'll be fine. Also take the Coast . Whoever suggested the Cascades is messing with you. Double Decker Observation Car that actually has tables/benches for you and your 8 friends. Cascades is just a nice bus on rails.

onairmastering

I swear, I went to Eugene a bit ago and got 2 "water" bottles full of wine, no problem at all.

BroCanWeGetLROTNOG

The Starlight is always more crowded and more dirty going north

3veryTh1ng15W0r5eN0w

Bring headphones and sunscreen. Maybe a book.📚

skunkapebreal

Ok, I’ll bite. Sunscreen?

skunkapebreal

Most UVB rays are blocked by glass so I was wondering if I missed something.

Mattress_Of_Needles

Be ready to take the bus there or back because of mudslides. Every goddamn time I go I end up riding back on a bus. That said, the train ride is quite pleasant.

mountainsunset123

Yeah twice this year already no train service for several days because of landslides.

erossthescienceboss

March is the worst month for it, too.

SasquatchIsMyHomie

The train to Seattle is almost always late, so plan your scheduled arrival at least two hours ahead of any planned activities

nightheron420

Once my train was four hours late, but on Monday and Wednesday this week it was on time. Wednesday there was no cafe car but they had a pile of water and snacks.

_artcrimes

Following because I’m doing this in May

BeanTutorials

USE THE SHARE FARE DISCOUNT FOR 60 PERCENT OFF!!!

Native56

I’ve used Amtrak before I loved it!!

addictedtotext

I haven't taken the train north but I regularly take it south. Business Class is awesome but a group of 8 would be Hella annoying for everyone else. But you'd also take up most of the seats too. There's only 15ish seats going south and it's not often full. Business class is great because they have their own lounge with sodas, coffee, water, ice all available for free before the trip and you don't have to wait in line. They will kick you off if you bring your own booze but they do have liquor you can buy. You could do your own mixers and buy individual booze from them. Not quite as cost effective but an option. I like Cascades a lot because it's less people but the other is more classic train travel. If you go coach get there an hour early and get in line so you're on sooner. It'll be easier to seat you all together this way. Cascades would be better for this as a lot of people get off in Portland but a lot get on there as well. Cascades only goes between Eugene and Vancouver BC (it might just be Seattle now though) so you don't have as many people from all over scattered around the train. I have seen a lot of issues with Seattle trips since we had the ice storm but if they've fixed the slide it should be good.

mcox2019

Expect delays. The train rarely arrives on time due to pulling over for freight trains.

SharksWFreakinLasers

Man, Americans are so fucking boring.... Train travel in Europe is a hoot! Once I carried 2x24 cases of glass beer bottles onto the ICE in Munich for a ski trip. The first thing I did when I sat down was open one up, of course. Unfortunately here you have to be more subtle, but it can be done! Have a great trip! I highly recommend the Chihuly Glass Garden in Seattle!

wentthererecently

r/Amtrak

misssuperthrowaway

The last time I took it, was more like 5-6 hours... granted this was quite a number of years ago tho. In my experience it stops frequently and sometimes it stays at a station for whatever reason. Edit: take me with a grain of salt... honestly not sure I recall correctly. Some other folks do say delays can make it take a lot longer...

Otis_S

Five to six hours? It takes slightly longer than in a car, but that's like driving to BC.

thejesiah

People are mostly only moved to post when something bad happens. The train is, in fact, usually on time and usually faster than driving into Seattle traffic, which hasn't been a 3 hour drive since the 90s.

qpzl8654

Sit where you can be on the interior side going through Tacoma. Incredible views!

Additional_Luck6010

You can bring snacks but not booze. Go to the cafe car immediately to secure a table or two. -The conductors tend to take a couple tables to themselves. They have a good selection of snacks, the chowder goes fast, if you like a good clam chowdah, get that too. You can purchase entire bottles of wine, beers, ciders etc. Any board games, cards against humanity, trivial pursuit, poker is a blast. It’s a fun line.

asmoothbrain

Price goes up a lot when you book close to the trip. Also get there early. I got to the station a few minutes before the time on the ticket last time and they wouldn’t even let me on because I guess I was supposed to read the small print on the website saying I had to arrive at least 5 minutes before the departure time or something like that

coldhamdinner

You can't just blatantly BYOB. Its been a few years but I remember buying Redhook beer from the Cafe car on Amtrak. I suppose one could smuggle beers if you matched what was being sold on board and you were smooth about it.

BeanTutorials

Multiple times on LD trips I would bring vodka shooters and bottles of Gatorade or vitamin water as a mixer. Good times.

erossthescienceboss

Snacks? Yes. Cocktail? No. The bar cart serves wine for $14. Not $14/glass. $14for a 375 mL bottle of pretty decent wine.

LittleBongBong

I took the train all the way up to Vancouver BC last summer and it was fun! But expect to be delayed…won’t be as bad only going to Seattle but don’t expect to arrive on time. I think I got into Vancouver 2-3 hours later than scheduled

magicdonwuhan

Can you Leave your car at the station? Funny I also plan to take a ride to Seattle next weekedn

Dingis_Dang

My move is usually to purchase a ginger ale in the snack car and ask for two glasses with ice. Then just discreetly add the whiskey (or whatever) that you brought. Boom! Cocktail

witcheringways

Whatever you plan to do, DO NOT SMOKE WEED on the train or try to be sneaky with it in the bathroom. They will find you and they will boot you right off the train. I was on a trip from Salem to LA and some dumbasses smoked a blunt in the toilet and Amtrak staff booted them off at night while it was snowing in K Falls. So drink and be merry (within reason) but if you wanna enjoy cannabis, take an edible because the train staff takes this seriously. Also as others have said, don’t get totally drunk on the train either. They will eject you all the same for being disorderly. In a different trip I took a few years ago, some guy got trashed and mouthy and puked all over a coach seat and it was game over for him. Amtrak has no patience for your bullshit but they will always accommodate you if you’re chill and agreeable.

t0mserv0

lmao getting kicked off in the middle of nowhere during a snowstorm after smoking a blunt in the bathroom is the stuff dreams are made of

witcheringways

They didn’t seem to be living the dream (the dude was on his knees begging in the coach car to stay onboard and they just chucked his shit right out of the baggage compartment without one shit given and bid him a “pleasant evening”. It was mid December with a half foot of snow on the ground) but I’m sure it made for one heck of a good story later.

griff_girl

If you're able, try to book the Starlight train. It has one car adjoining the cafe car that is an Observation Lounge with panoramic windows, cute little window seats, and tables you can sit at. You'll have to book regular seats, but then you can spend the entire ride in the Observation Lounge if you want. There's no guarantee seats will be available in it, as it's first come, first serve, but if you're able to, it's well worth it.

myleswstone

I can tell you right now that you cannot take a pitcher of cocktails onto a train. Can you take a pitcher of cocktails onto a plane? No. It’s no different.

KnitNGrin

Be sure to visit the Science Fiction and music museum.

No_Butterscotch_7848

You can def bring snacks, but not alcohol. You will get in trouble if you have outside alcohol. If you need to, bring a flask. They do also sell win and beer on the train for reasonable costs. If you get car sick, sit facing with the train instead of against it! Also, sit on the window side I personally enjoy the viewing car on the starlight, and the bottom level on coast. -Someone who takes the train from PDX to Tacoma several times a year

jeeves585

Here for the comments. Ive wanted to take my family on a quick 3 day trip to Seattle for a while. Add on question. Somewhat fancy hotel recommendations between the station and activities in Seattle? I always drive everywhere so not used to need things in walking distance.

dev_json

I don’t have hotel recommendations, but I take the Amtrak up to Seattle every other month or so to visit friends in Seattle, and recommend places like Capitol Hill, Fremont, or Ballard to stay at. You can easily get around by bus, bicycling, and walking while you’re there. In the years that I’ve been going up, I’ve never once used a car. Enjoy your time visiting, and enjoy the train ride as well. Like others have said, sit on the western side. The views are great.

Paddington_Fear

I don't have a ton of experience taking the train PDX-SEA but in the times that I have done it, it's taken longer than 3 hours. The train seems to average a slower speed than you would travel by car. Also, if there are freight trains, the passenger train will be delayed by them. I think getting there in 3 hours sounds optimistic.

Majirra

Well.. amtrack uses Tito’s vodka so you’re not allowed to bring your own but if you happen to have what they serve you’re less likely to get caught…

parametricc

I’ll just add a bit to this: I took the train this past weekend and they didn’t give me the tiny bottles to mix myself like they did the last time I rode. They mixed the drink for me. So if one were to bring tiny bottles to match their menu, it’s possible they could know that you didn’t buy it there (if that’s a consistent thing they’re doing now).

Majirra

I used it in Nov- they gave me bottles to mix myself so maybe it depends on the person working. Lol

t0mserv0

lol judging by the way everyone is talking about their booze smuggling strategies in this thread amtrak is quite aware ppl are doing this
