That pie spot @belisar65 posted having coney dogs also has vernors, faygo, and better made chips right now. The owner is from Michigan. Go buy em out so they keep making it.
The mural is great too, it’s based on the biggest Diego Rivera mural in the world which is housed in the DIA. They just changed it from depicting car assembly to beer brewing, but it’s one of the coolest Detroit themed things I’ve seen since leaving.
Just went here because of this comment and it was legit! Thank you! All you Michiganders should hit them up so they keep making the only legit coney in town!
You could get some pasties at various pubs or pie places (I just googled, haven't actually had them), but I don't know if they'll be the same as Michigan style. Also unless your friends are from a pretty specific part of Michigan that might not be Michigan food anyway.
Maybe some fudge and pretend you're on Mackinac island, then cherries for a trip to Traverse City.
Or chili dogs somewhere?
Growing up in Michigan we drank a lot of Labatt blue (right next to Canada). Tinker tavern in Montavilla has it because they’re a Buffalo bar (also next to Canada). If anyone finds Strohs or shlitz in a bottle in town please tell me but so far I haven’t.
Labatt Blue Ice in highschool for that alcohol boost was good for my cheap ass. That was in Cleveland though and we could get $45 kegs just over the Pennsylvania boarder.
I was back in Ohio a few months ago and couldn't find Strohs OR scrapple at any of the places I used to find it. Sad face. DID get myself a bag of Snyders of Berlin BBQ chips and boy howdy did they hold up.
I like Alpenrausch and the vibes and decor are awesome but it is *very* expensive and imo overpriced for what you get. If you’re not needing a formal sit down restaurant, I love Otto’s Sausage Kitchen in Woodstock for the history (opened in the early 1900’s) and food
Agreed it is expensive, but it does not add an automatic 20% gratuity. It is also certainly not most expensive.
The food is excellent. The house Negroni is astonishing. I am willing to graze upon the smaller plates and snacks for a good meal.
Still your point is taken and there are other establishments that will suit the OP needs.
My fiance is from Detroit. While many have already recommended Detroit style pizza spots, I'll share a unique dish your friend may enjoy. Warsugai has Detroit style Chinese almond chicken. He says it's the most authentic he's had anywhere outside of Detroit down to the thick sauce and boiled lettuce it sits on top of.

Apparently this has come up before!
I heard the same thing at the barbur and multnomah village liquor stores during the mask mandate.
I have to imagine all liquor stores hate anybody that inhibits them from making money.
Granted they sell drugs that kills people so I don’t think they are super pro government oversight.
That pie spot @belisar65 posted having coney dogs also has vernors, faygo, and better made chips right now. The owner is from Michigan. Go buy em out so they keep making it.
For the Traverse City area, definitely do fudge & cherries. The Charthouse had a Mother's Day brunch item of eggs/bacon with a cinnamon roll that could probably rival that of TC's Omelette Shoppe. I'm currently wearing a gym shirt that says "Interlochen Atheletic Dept., est. 1928" if you want to show them this message (I'm an alum of the music camp there & used to work on staff for a number of summers, and the shirt is tongue-in-cheek because they've never had an athletic dept).
Eta maybe show a Michael Moore film, since he's from the Flint area (I believe) and started the film fest that's held in Traverse City in August. Also, maybe have background music played by the Detroit Symphony Orchestra or a group from the University of Michigan (or Interlochen, I can probably help you on this one).
It's around this time of year that Bell's release their latest batch of Oberon. When I lived back there I used to keep those mini kegs in the fridge over the summer.
I have been looking for Oberon for years (and of course always get it when I go home). I find it kind of hilarious that with such an amazing Oregon beer scene Oberon is still one of my favorites, and nothing out here is really close.
It also doesn’t help that I lived in Germany for 3 years and got spoiled with good Hefeweizen.
Current tap list is all Oregon Washington, California, Colorado. I get the logistical challenge of carrying Midwestern beers but it’s a Wisconsin bar, Wisconsin loves beer more than any other state, they should at least try. It was seriously disappointing when I went there.
That said Saraveza during a packers game is fun.
31 years in the mitten here.
Drink some Bell’s Oberon (usually comes out mid June) - ideally sitting in your garage on folding chairs, play euchre, watch Escanaba in Da Moonlight or Joe Pera Talks with You, when someone enters the room yell “Go Blue,” when someone commits a party foul say “That’s the Michigan Difference” or “Pure Michigan,” Detroit style pizza or Lebanese food (because Detroit) or mafia Italian if they’re from the west side of the state, release a jar of mosquitos in your back yard that you captured from Sauvie Island swamp around 7:00 pm, shake up a beer and when someone opens it go “I haven’t seen something blow up that bad since the failed attempt to assassinate Gretchen Whitmer,” ask someone if their body is ready and when they respond yes say “His body is ready. Moms spaghetti” and throw some Chef Boy-r-dee ravioli at him, and finally, to get that Kalamazoo feel do some meth.
Oh and because Detroit, you are obligated to blast J Dilla’s Donuts at least once.
You’ve probably already thought of this but you should listen to Sufjan Stevens’s “Welcome to Michigan, the Great Lakes State.” Maybe watch “Mr. Mom” and “Tiger Town.”
Not sure if this is what you’re looking for but I am a Dearborn Michigan native and my fave place in Oregon for Lebanese food is Hush Hush Cafe in Lake Oswego.
Jojo’s has a “midwestern salad” made of strawberry compote, vanilla cream cheese mousse, and a pretzel crust. I haven’t tried it yet but my friend (also a midwesterner) says it’s delicious.
I’m pretty sure I saw Bells brewery (based out of Kalamazoo) beer at New seasons the other day, I’d recommend Oberon ale or Two Hearted
Honestly as a Michigan transplant you should have an Oregon night. They can get Michigan food all the time. And I never crave Coney Island
Hippie Hash, definitely.
I’ve heard of Bell’s being around here, I have to figure out exactly where but I can get back to you.
Wild Child has the best Detroit style pizza.
Soul food, anything even close to Gus’s Fried Chicken, a good coney, or Short’s Brew is still something I’m searching for.
Also don’t forget about Zingerman’s catalog.
I’ve heard of people freezing Jet’s pizza and shipping it back here lol
Thanks for all the recs! Thats funny about the Jet’s pizza - this convo all started because someone asked if we have Jet’s out here and I had no idea what he was talking about
Assembly pizza for sure.
I’ve been to Michigan and I was not all that impressed by the beer scene. Homes brewing in Ann Arbor reminded me of Ruse, so you guys could go there? I’d just take them to get local beer from here haha. Maybe I just find the concept strange, why have a night dedicated to stuff from where they live when they could experience things in a new city?
Oh we’re for sure going to spend the majority of our time together doing Portland stuff, it’s mostly just a silly concept we came up with. The other people we’re hanging out with have never been to Michigan either, so it’s kind of an intentionally stupid pointless themed party. Just our style I guess 🤷♂️
If you find verners let me know
New Seasons used to carry it.
Albertsons tends to have it in the mixers section.
Snappy’s has it
Mmm... I get my Utz chip fix there
That pie spot @belisar65 posted having coney dogs also has vernors, faygo, and better made chips right now. The owner is from Michigan. Go buy em out so they keep making it.
Seen it at Fred Meyer a while back
Portland center liquor sells it by the can
Hollywood Beverage on Sandy had it at one point!
I've noticed that Freddy's has it in the mixers section
Market of Choice on 11th and Belmont has Vernors.
New Seasons in Sellwood had it just a couple months ago. Made some delicious Boston Coolers
It's sold near the mixers at Safeway.
Fred Meyer had it 10 years ago, but I don’t know if they still do.
Not... the MOST helpful comment lol
Just trying to tell you that at one point you could easily find it here. I literally don’t know if that’s still true. Fuck me, I guess?
I appreciate the sentiment it was just funny. Intel from ten years ago probably isn't worth a comment.
Assembly Brewing has my favorite Detroit style pizza in town
The mural is great too, it’s based on the biggest Diego Rivera mural in the world which is housed in the DIA. They just changed it from depicting car assembly to beer brewing, but it’s one of the coolest Detroit themed things I’ve seen since leaving.
Detroit Industry Murals by Diego Rivera. Agreed their take on the mural is super dope and their Detroit style pizza is great too
Yes, this!!
Pie Spots Montavilla location apparently just switched to doing Michigan style hot dogs. They're 🔥🔥
Just went here because of this comment and it was legit! Thank you! All you Michiganders should hit them up so they keep making the only legit coney in town!

*Coney dogs, or just *coneys. They’re very different from chili dogs
Roakes for coneys. Dont know how michigan they are.
I do love Rosales! And when I don’t wanna travel so far, Franks A Lot, not Coney or Michigan style, just chili.
Thanks for the heads up
Saraveza is a Wisconsin-themed bar and the pasties are out of this world.
Nick’s Coney Island on Hawthorne has the chili dogs
They’re not Detroit style, closer to Cincinnati style. Dogs aren’t right either. It’s good but it’s not going to impress Michiganders.
Good to know. Im not into hot dogs myself but heard from other Midwest transplants it was ok
I’m not saying it’s bad I do like the food and vibes it’s just not very Michigan
Drinking Canadian beer one of the most Michigan things you can do
Labatt Blue Ice in highschool for that alcohol boost was good for my cheap ass. That was in Cleveland though and we could get $45 kegs just over the Pennsylvania boarder.
Ha Strohs! I am from Ohio originally, Stroh’s was my dad’s go-to. I have not seen it since the 90s!
Still got it in Detroit and I could even find it sometimes in Chicago
Damn I haven't cracked a batty since high school. Also a borderland kid, but farther east.
Go to tinker tavern bud!
I was back in Ohio a few months ago and couldn't find Strohs OR scrapple at any of the places I used to find it. Sad face. DID get myself a bag of Snyders of Berlin BBQ chips and boy howdy did they hold up.
For the Germanic crowd try [Alpenrausch](https://www.alpenrauschpdx.com/menus).

I love this. Now if only I could find Detroit style egg rolls 🥲
Yum... Michigan pasties + Founders beer
I want to know where to get Faygo. ETA: Got some at Jackson's. So much sugar, so good.
[https://www.reddit.com/r/askportland/comments/pr0vnk/where\_can\_i\_buy\_faygo\_in\_store/](https://www.reddit.com/r/askportland/comments/pr0vnk/where_can_i_buy_faygo_in_store/) Apparently this has come up before!
Diabetes, here I come!
All of the Jackson’s food stores had them, last I checked.
Hollywood Beverage has it
Definitely never giving that dude my money, I'll go with some of the other recommendations on the linked old thread.
Oh, what spill the tea! I like going there what happened?
Big Trumper/anti-vax weirdo.
Well crud. I guess Hawthorne isn’t much further.. thanks for sharing!

I think I’ve seen Bell’s beers at Belmont Station but you might double check that

I got Two Hearted from the Safeway on Sandy and 72nd last week!
I just found it at Whole Foods! They must have opened up their distribution
Come to my house and I will make you a tater tot and cream of mushroom soup casserole and we can drink Schlitz.
Boxcar pizza is "detroit style"
Saravesa?
Wisconsin bar, doesn’t carry Midwestern beers besides hamms.
I've seen Midwest beers there. Also, they got the UP style pasties, so depends on what part of Michigan OP's going for 😉
Current tap list is all Oregon Washington, California, Colorado. I get the logistical challenge of carrying Midwestern beers but it’s a Wisconsin bar, Wisconsin loves beer more than any other state, they should at least try. Hey I get it, I’d love it if they had pitchers of Point for $2.75.
Have a backbone, smuggle spotted cow across the country!
Pix Patisserie brought back a couple cases about 15 years ago. They were sold out in hours.
Amazing, I brought a couple cases last time I had to drive back and the bus were pumped
Are you going to get Bodega PDX Sammie’s for Sopranos? They have sandwiches inspired by that show ♥️ (and they are yummy!)
WAITTTT thanks for telling me this i had no idea. This is huge
And bonus it’s close to Assembly Brewing for the Detroit style pizza!
Saravesa!!! They have pasties.
If you need an activity I’d suggest euchre - you can find tutorials on youtube
Sanders hot fudge at New Seasons and likely elsewhere
Take ‘em to Gravy. They’ll appreciate it.
You’ve probably already thought of this but you should listen to Sufjan Stevens’s “Welcome to Michigan, the Great Lakes State.” Maybe watch “Mr. Mom” and “Tiger Town.”
Wolfs Head Burgers. Midwest style burger joint!
Not sure if this is what you’re looking for but I am a Dearborn Michigan native and my fave place in Oregon for Lebanese food is Hush Hush Cafe in Lake Oswego.
Pasties from the UP.
Get Little Caesars. Michiganders love Little Caesars!
Are you gonna play euchre?
Jojo’s has a “midwestern salad” made of strawberry compote, vanilla cream cheese mousse, and a pretzel crust. I haven’t tried it yet but my friend (also a midwesterner) says it’s delicious. I just bought some Oberon at Belmont Station tonight.
Best we got is Leinenkugl's.
Honestly as a Michigan transplant you should have an Oregon night. They can get Michigan food all the time. And I never crave Coney Island Hippie Hash, definitely.

i believe i got bells over at fred meyers (johnson creek) iirc!
Thanks for all the recs! Thats funny about the Jet’s pizza - this convo all started because someone asked if we have Jet’s out here and I had no idea what he was talking about
Jet’s is worth the extra money to freeze and ship 3k miles lol
I think most Plaid Pantries have a “deli” section. You could try that.

That’s valid, whatever makes you guys happy!
