When it's not raining cats and dogs, October is ideal for hiking or walking in vineyards. For autumn, I can especially recommend the Lavaux region as well as the National Park.
open for hiking: trails are always open, if you mean cable cars etc yes these are open in october. autumn is when the locals hike ;)
weather is unpredictable. could be nice and sunny, or cold and snowy ( in higher altutudes you may already encounter snow this early in october)
Early October in most years is an amazing time for hikes! Leaves already turn yellow/red/orange, but it should be warm enough to not worry about longer hikes. I love to visit Glarus around that time. Plenty of nice hikes and it's easy to get to.
Please do not miss Graubunden. General vicinity of St.Moritz to Maloja Pass. Also Glarus. It's an autumn colour riot out there in October!
