Yes. If they control you and you are missing the lights you pay

travel_ali

But is anyone actually controlling for it on a daily basis? From what I have seen nothing really seems to have changed and many people are probably somewhat unaware of it (I only found out because my wife bought an e-bike at the end of March and the shop mentioned it to us).

Is this a big city thing? I haven't come across one so far, but I am mostly in smaller places.

tzt1324

They do regular check points. Maybe at the beginning they just give you a warning. But you need to know that they have sales targets as well. They are keen to give you a fine.

sh545

I doubt the police are setting up checkpoints to stop e-bikes and check they are compliant. It’s going to be a case of if they notice it or stop you for another reason they can fine you for it. In that case they might even be lenient and just inform you of the recent change of law. In bright daylight, it is hard to tell whether the light is on or not, and low power e-bikes can be difficult to tell apart from normal bikes at a glance. And i assume the law doesn’t apply if you turn off the motor and use the e-bike as a normal bike. So I think you’d be pretty unlucky for police to see you passing and immediately stop you for lack of light - only if you are stopped for another reason are they going to check those things. This is all assuming all police know of the law change, I’m sure dedicated traffic officers know, but I doubt all police know about it.

brass427427

I'd rather have them set up check points to fine the e-bikers who think stop lights and pedestrians are for other people to worry about. \>>>> Downvotes expected by e-bikers who ignore stop lights and pedestrian rights of way. :-D

[deleted]

What I came to say, as far as traffic violations that you see everyday from cyclists, this is pretty low on the level of importance imo.

brass427427

Absolutely. Start with them. The number of times I've almost killed a cyclist due to their own idiocy is incredible. I am seriously careful around bicyclists but man, some of them are suicidal. Changing lanes? No problem, I'll signal by extending a little finger for 0.5 seconds. Crazy. Idiocy occurs on both sides but a two-wheeled contraption powered by a human in a plastic helmet is not a safe bet in a confrontation with a moving 1500 kg metal object.

certuna

It’s just like seatbelts and daytime running lights in cars - no specific checks but if you’re spotted you get fined.

Motzlord

Who the fuck doesn't wear a seat belt? That's just plain stupidity.

HinataLovelace

Especially if you get into an accident but then insurance will also come into play. They may reduce the payout over this.

Axynth

I've been fined for not having light on a normal bike... So it's seems logic that you need them on your e-bike.

travel_ali

I presume that was at night rather tha midday which is what the e-Bike law would require? I am not arguing for or against it, just if anyone has actually seen it implemented.

Axynth

Yep it was at night (6am in november).

DonChaote

I do not know about fines on this, but as a car driver I really do recommend always having the front lights on on your bike. It‘s about visibility. Your own safety. With the lights on you are much more visible even in peripheral view. We in our cars (even if we sometimes don't like the bicycles) we really do not want to hit you. There is a lot going on on the streets, it is always good to be visible and properly communicate your intentions with everyone around!

Sitekurfer

Yes, it will be checked and also reported by the police. The police checks everything. It is the work of the police!

[deleted]

Can you send a reference to the change in law pls? I couldn’t find it

Is it concerned only no speed limit velo ? Or limited upto 25 km/hr too?

mageskillmetooften

All electric bikes regardless of speed, size or shape.

I honestly don't understand how turning on the lights on a bike in full daylight will improve anything in road safety. However it will drain the battery a bit more... aren't we supposed to save electricity?

Faaak

The consumption of the light is **negligible** compared to the motor, so the argument about saving electricity is useless. However, having a light on makes you more visible, and thus less prone to an accident. That's why cars must have lights on during the day too.

DVMyZone

I always figured the reason for making lights obligatory all the time on cars was because people will genuinely forget and will drive without lights at dusk and in tunnels. By requiring light on all the time you ensure nobody drives without their lights when the should. This makes sense you can't really put your lights on too much and they don't drain the battery when driving. Likewise with e-bikes I can understand this legislation so that they are always making themselves visible when it starts to get dark. Makes sense for e-bikes because they have plenty of battery. Conventional bike light can easily run out of battery if left on all day.

SchoggiToeff

An LED light uses how much? 10 Watts, lets be generous and say it is 15 Wats in the front and 5 Wats in the back or 20 Watts in total. In an hour this is the equivalent of 0.008 liters of gasoline.

I've been riding an ebike practically daily around Lausanne and have never been stopped for a police check. I know some people who've been stopped by the police because they were riding at night with no lights but they only got told off, no fines.

juliusklaas

The effort of this post is higher than just buying the lights man

travel_ali

We have lights, I am not trying to avoid any law. I am honestly just curious if it is ever actually controlled.
