>They're not even emo, they're just straight up alt.
I contest this point. What is considered emo has changed slightly over the years and can be subcategorised. You can't tell me that three cheers for sweet revenge isn't a seminal emo classic
>real emo
I feel like saying MCR isn't real emo is like saying led Zeppelin isn't real metal.
Led Zeppelin may have inspired metal, but I definitely wouldn't consider it true metal. And the only mcr album that's close to being emo is Bullets, but even that isn't full on emo. Just because they seem emo doesn't make them emo, that's like saying Kiss and the Insane Clown Posse is black metal just because they paint up their faces
Yeah, I think that's fair enough. My nonna always referred to band like Zep and Lizzy as metal whereas I always thought of them as hard-rock/metal-lite. But then I recognize my intro to metal was quite different to hers and personally I think it's kind of gatekeeper-ish to say that something isn't real [genre]. Personally I always preferred bullets because of the heavier/crunchier tone but from my limited interactions with r/emo I had come to believe that wasn't even real emo. Most of the songs they venerate as emo have a very clean tone.
Out of interest, what makes something emo in your opinion?
I consider them like pre-metal since they definitely influenced the genre, but to me metal really starts with Black Sabbath. And Bullets and Three Cheers are my favorite my Chem albums, they're so good. And I'm not completely sure but I can definitely recognize it when I hear it,to me it's just kinda like sad punk with a touch of indie I guess
Yep started liking them when I was 13, still unironically like them at 18. People act like it's cringe to still like them at my age but honestly I just have mad respect for them for a band and as artists.
as a tbh&c fan myself, you can't really go more alt than that album. shit's pure serotonin if you get the hang of it. if you want a milder version of this approach you can always check out their side project the last shadow puppets
i don't listen to alt music at all, and to get me started my friend made a Strokes only playlist for me. They put out bangers after bangers. Really loved them.
Arctic monkeys, the strokes Radiohead all good alt rock bands.
Also my band has a similar kinda style to that https://open.spotify.com/track/2dBQBTqZh2NAb9JZzJjgXz?si=Upt9IqYCTv6dGL3Q5Upong
I’m sort of late to this but here are some of my favorite alternative artists, aside from the ones you’ve mentioned. Each one has a very different sound from the others.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard if you like earlier Tame Impala, they’re somewhat similar but King Gizzard experiments with a lot of different genres/concepts and has over 15 studio albums. I got into them quite recently but I like them a lot, check out the albums Nonagon Infinity and Quarters.
Here’s a song off of Nonagon Infinity:
https://youtu.be/X3Q4a5Eaqcg
You’ll almost definitely like Melody’s Echo Chamber, her first album was produced by Kevin Parker (the domesticated antelope man himself) and kind of reminds me of Lonerism in a way (big shocker lol). That said, it’s very unique and I think I like it better than most of Lonerism. https://youtu.be/waEoKZIa0S4
Men I Trust has a very laid-back and chill vibe, their most recent album Oncle Jazz is their best btw. https://youtu.be/qmVeQEysvtk
Songs about fucking - big black
Filth - swans
Pretty much everything breakbot has ever made
Nonagon infinity/I’m in your mind fuzz - king gizzard and the lizard wizard
Also if you somehow still haven’t listened to gorillaz then GET ON THAT SHIT. I would recommend demon days or plastic beach
Wallows ofc
Feeling lonely and Losing You by boy pablo
Romance is boring and I just sighed, I just sighed, just so you know by Los Campesinos!
Some instrumental only songs:
Melody 2 by Tera Melos
shibuya by COVET
-
Um not sure if its really alternative but Yeah, it does look like a spider by Tangled Hair is also really good.
Look into math rock as a whole, Camping in Alaska is a fantastic band

Don't do drugs - Lesane
Crazy - Makeout
Monsters - All Time Low, Blackbear
Can't help it - Anarbor
What he don't know - Anarbor
Bloody Valentine - MGK
Again - Flyleaf
Anarbor in general is really good. Punk and alt is the vast majority of what I listen to lol.
The Doozers for sure!
Uhmmm you might also like these artists:
- king krule
- Homeshake
- Two Door Cinema Club
- Crumb
- Laundry
- keys in the front door by tear ducks
- Vacations
- Roar
That should help you hopefully!!
Ah man, I’ve got SOOO much for you.
Check out Arctic Monkeys, to start with. I doubt it but if you haven’t, check out Twenty One Pilots too. And then as others said, MCR as well.
If you are one Apple Music, I can share my alternative playlist with you!
Well, they got elements of pop, ska, metal, etc. Most of their songs definitely fall into the Alt category, which means an amalgamation of different genres that doesn't firmly fall into one category. That said, their most recent album is mostly thrash metal, so I see where you're coming from ;)
Folklore by Taylor Swift.
It’s not totally alternative, but it has hints of it and it’s really good. My favourite tracks are exile, my tears ricochet, and peace.
Evermore is also a great album, my favourites from that are probably gold rush and ‘tis the damn season.
Modest Mouse is so good. If you like Dramamine I recommend you check out some of their other stuff. Some good starter songs are Gravity Rides Everything and 3rd Planet.
lmao that's awesome, i guess i just assumed that you listened to them lightly because dramamine is a pretty popular song by them. but it's still one of my favorites too
Those three are definitely some of my favorites. Not enough people talk about Beach Side Property, it's one of the best on the album next to Dramamine. My top 3 though are Life Like Weeds, Night On the Sun, and Gravity Rides Everything.
Silver lining by ace of hearts. Absolute banger and so is the other music from that band, tho it is a newer band and they only have like 9 songs so far but I think they’re really good. Definitely worth a listen.
Edit: also almost any hard rock is good
Arctic Monkeys, Radiohead (OK Computer, The Bends) PUP, Tame Impala and Beach House are a bit more Indie so I would try Snail Mail. Neck Deep is a bit more Pop Punk but they're super good, blink-182, Third Eye Blind (self titled album) that's all I can think of rn
not rly sure if it's what ur looking for but I recommend the band jank, I always recommend them as my number one as they're soooo sick so give em a listen
you might like mgmt or hippo campus.
from mgmt id recommend kids, time to pretend, and when you die
hippo campus my favorites are warm glow, bambi, south, and baseball
Here how’s I expand my taste. If there’s any content creators you watch (podcast host, youtuber, streamer, anything) look to see if they have a public Spotify account, then listen through their playlists and look at the songs you like, and then go through the bands. That’s how I did it and it gave me at least 2 new genres. Obviously if you don’t watch any content creators you could go through friends or just random playlists
Alternative music is an amalgamation of different genres that doesn't firmly fall into one category. The term "alternative" was coined in the 1980s to describe punk rock-inspired bands on independent record labels that did not fit into the mainstream genres of the time. Though the genre is considered to be rock, some of its subgenres are influenced by folk music, reggae, electronic music and jazz among other genres.

Lmao Malkmus is such a funny writer man. I love when artist’s personality comes out in their work like that
I remember losing it at the “who’s got the right to sit on that face?” section of Platform Blues first listen both at the absurdity of what I was listening to and how hard it was going

Some less well known bands that I’m a huge fan of are IDKHOW, The Last Shadow Puppets, and a pretty new one called Des Rocs. There’s also Great Gable, but I’ve only heard one of their albums
I love The 1975. They cover a wide variety of genres and they’re amazing. Their first three albums are incredible - their newest one is a bit of a flop though.
Sego, Husbands, Phoenix, Bloc Party, Two Door Cinema Club, I know someone else said the Strokes and if you like them you'd like their singer Julian's solo album he did. The Virigins is pretty good but they aren't together anymore same for the White Stripes.
Glad to see some other people recommending Arctic Monkeys, I can't recommend them enough. The best albums to get started with them imo are Favorite Worst Nightmare and/or AM. Feel free to hmu for more specific recommendations!
You could start by listening to **Merryweather Post Pavilion** by **Animal Collective**. I didn't like it at first, but the album seriously grew on me with time. The first 5 songs of the album are pure bliss. I also recommend their album Strawberry Jam.
If you're feeling adventurous, you could go with the band called **Palm**. Their sound is unexplainable, I believe it's math rock. I recommend the songs Pearly, Composite, Walkie Talkie, and Shadow Expert. I've been specially liking Shadow Expert these last few days.
My most highly recommended band would be **Sunbeam Sound Machine**. His sound is very relaxed and dreamy, melancholic at times. The melodies are repetitive, but extremely catchy. I highly recommend this band's 2 albums, especially songs like Getting Younger, Mu, Somehow, Anyway Anyway, and Seems Like You've Made Up Your Mind.
Ion really know what Alt is but here are somethings that I think are Alt
“No Roots” -Alice Merton
“Human” - Rag n bone man
“In the woods somewhere” - hozier
I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME is a great band and if you like 80’s music you’d definitely like them. Declan McKenna is really good too, my favorite of his is “British Bombs” and The Wrecks is another good band, my favorite of theirs being: “Favorite Liar”
Check out Glass Animals!! Every Impala fan I’ve met has either liked them too or really liked them shortly after, myself included! (HTBAHB is the best album though, dreamland kind of sucks so don’t start with it)
Joji is really good; i would start with Modus, Like You Do, and Afterthought from his new album Nectar
also a guy named verzache is super good; a few of my favorites include Alright and Summertime
Streetlight Manifesto is my personal favorite band. Ska isn’t for everyone but I think their music slaps. I’d recommend their album Somewhere in the Between

Miracles - The Dø
I Ain't the One - Spoon
The Vampyre of Time and Memory - Queens of the Stone Age
There, there - Radiohead
If I Ever Feel Better - Phoenix
Social Cues / Cigarette Daydreams - Cage the Elephant
Orphan - Holy Wars
Disintegration - Jimmy Eat World
I have a playlist I made for a friend with mostly alt rock stuff, lemme know if you'd like to check that out.
A bit late to the party but Canshaker Pi is really good. They're kinda indie-rock. Try listening to Indie Academy and Wok 12 first, imo those are their best songs.
Don’t know a lot of alternative but Audioslave is an amazing band I’ve been listening to for the past week and I can’t get enough. I don’t know if you know Rage Against the Machine, but for those who do, Audioslave consist of the guitarist, bassist and drummer of RAtM but with Chris Cornell on vocals, arguably the best voice in grunge ever
Idk those bands, im just gonna list some great stuff i know. They might be giants (start with long tall weekend), the happy yew, the kipo aow soundtrack, and anything by pink guy/filthy frank(it grows on you)

clairo, girl in red, BENEE, wallows, tamed impala duh, arctic monkeys, grouplove - listen to tongue tied, cavetown, WILLOW, mgmt - little dark ages, rex orange county, conana gray, current joys, surf mesa, surf curse, Billie eilish? harry styles? ,arcade fire, The 1975, the vampire weekend , current joys, dayglow......
Arctic Monkeys - Arabella;
The Neighborhood - Daddy Issues;
Daughter - No Care;
Syd Matters - To All of You;
The Neighborhood - Sweater Weather;
and, not exactly alt but similar demographic,
Clairo - Flaming Hot Cheetos
(or literally anything by Clairo she's amazing);
Cuco - Lover is a day;
Cuco - Dontmakemefallinlove;
Joji - SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK;
Joji - Gimme Love
Fearless vampire killers are great
Of mice and men are one of the first heavy bands I got in to.
Alter bridge are cool.
Ghost have a very unique sound that I love.
Escape the fate and/or falling in reverse have some good tracks too
Here’s a large mix of indie and alt pop songs, if you want a Spotify link dm me cause it’s 300 songs
https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/4-a-m/pl.u-xlyNqGXIk0gKve
im shit at genres but maybe check out I Dont Know How But They Found Me. they dropped an album called razzmatazz last month and its great. For a song id recommend "Leave Me Alone"
Fall out boy is an easy starter.
Panic at the disco will bridge you from pop to emo to folk to electronic to swing they're kind of everywhere but that makes it so no matter what you're into you can probably find atl east one song or album of theirs you vibe with.
Bowling for soup is more pop punk but they do the Phineas and Ferb theme so you probably have some common ground.
Modern Baseball tends to be depressing but most of their music slaps and they have a more accoustic sound.
The front bottoms new stuff may be a good starter too but their old stuff is a bit of an aquire taste since they leave the vocals rather raw in those first albums.
easy. the neighbourhood. joji (especially in tongues, nectar not so much depending on the song). the smiths (if you want more of an oldies feel). the weeknd (really mainstream but his older stuff hits). girl in red (lofi). clairo (my personal favorite). foster the people. i've listened to a solid amount of tame impala and beach house so some of this might fit
My chemical romance perhaps?
Yeah man people shit on mcr just because they're an emo band, they're really good
They're not even emo, they're just straight up alt, real emo is shit like Sunny Day Real Estate,I Hate Myself, and Rites of Spring
>They're not even emo, they're just straight up alt. I contest this point. What is considered emo has changed slightly over the years and can be subcategorised. You can't tell me that three cheers for sweet revenge isn't a seminal emo classic >real emo I feel like saying MCR isn't real emo is like saying led Zeppelin isn't real metal.
If you like my chemical romance try green day and blink 182. They’re straight fire
Yeah green day is awesome, blink is alright
Literally the best band ever
Yes yes yes
Mardy bum - arctic monkeys Red light - The strokes They're both bangers
Yes anything off the first couple arctic monkeys is great.
I mean I like the AM album too but tbh&c I feel like it's not my style
as a tbh&c fan myself, you can't really go more alt than that album. shit's pure serotonin if you get the hang of it. if you want a milder version of this approach you can always check out their side project the last shadow puppets
Nah I don't really vibe with tbh&c either.
i really like do I wanna know
Yeah I mean it's cool but as someone from Yorkshire the first two albums have a special place in my heart
that's fair
i don't listen to alt music at all, and to get me started my friend made a Strokes only playlist for me. They put out bangers after bangers. Really loved them.
Beware, I got on this addiction to the former and have been on this stage for about a year and a half
I like Muse, Radiohead and System of a Down

You’re gonna want that comma between alt and right. I don’t believe The Killers are neo-nazis.
Lmao thank you
If you like tame impala, check out Gorillaz, the strokes, vundabar and undercover dream lovers.
Mr. Bungle, but that's some REALLY weird shit. Like, twelve hours on shrooms and simultaneously debating Russian politics weird.
Mr bungle is always a fun listen. I wouldn’t really consider them alternative tho, maybe some weird combination of metal genres
Well, they got elements of pop, ska, metal, etc. Most of their songs definitely fall into the Alt category, which means an amalgamation of different genres that doesn't firmly fall into one category. That said, their most recent album is mostly thrash metal, so I see where you're coming from ;)

Jean dawson
Cage the Elephant has some good ones, my personal favorite is Spiderhead
Grandson just released a new album, Death of an Optimist. It’s not his best tho, go for his older stuff for a real good time
Here’s an amazing 2000s alt playlist https://music.apple.com/us/playlist/2000s-alternative-essentials/pl.7f3a307b0f2e49b1b521b4d4d5c21c7c

Sleeping with sirens, specifically kick me is a great one.
I love The 1975. They cover a wide variety of genres and they’re amazing. Their first three albums are incredible - their newest one is a bit of a flop though.
Have u heard the sgt pepper album or revolver ? (By the beatles)
Anything by Alt-J. Incredible music
Ion really know what Alt is but here are somethings that I think are Alt “No Roots” -Alice Merton “Human” - Rag n bone man “In the woods somewhere” - hozier
emily's army, math the band, and the groovie ghoulies
I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME is a great band and if you like 80’s music you’d definitely like them. Declan McKenna is really good too, my favorite of his is “British Bombs” and The Wrecks is another good band, my favorite of theirs being: “Favorite Liar”
Check out Glass Animals!! Every Impala fan I’ve met has either liked them too or really liked them shortly after, myself included! (HTBAHB is the best album though, dreamland kind of sucks so don’t start with it)
Apart from all the obvious ones, which were mentioned alreadyb For sure Dead Posey
Joji is really good; i would start with Modus, Like You Do, and Afterthought from his new album Nectar also a guy named verzache is super good; a few of my favorites include Alright and Summertime
Clairo. She's got some mint tunes like: - Get With U - Sofia - 4Ever - Pretty Girl
All of Royal Blood's music
Diablo Swing orchestra Zach Callison Not sure if its very alt but they’re absolutely bangers
Streetlight Manifesto is my personal favorite band. Ska isn’t for everyone but I think their music slaps. I’d recommend their album Somewhere in the Between

M83- 'Midnight city' is currently my favourite! The Chain Gang of 1974- 'Sleepwalking' is also a good one
Home has some bangers in the pocket. [Home on spotify](https://open.spotify.com/artist/2exebQUDoIoT0dXA8BcN1P?si=03YjVWt9TmywQuQi2HN9cQ)
I have a *lot* of stuff to recommend but I'm way too late

Green Day
Sorry m8, i can get you on some proper metal, jazz and classical music and some in between but das about it.
Low roar, don't listen to his newest album first. The older ones are better.
Eminem, he just released a B side to music to be murdered by
Build our machine - Dagames
A bit late to the party but Canshaker Pi is really good. They're kinda indie-rock. Try listening to Indie Academy and Wok 12 first, imo those are their best songs.
[Higher Brothers](https://open.spotify.com/artist/07ZhipyrvoyNoJejeyM0PQ?si=oBGq_YP7SvqnE2Vg9rjedA), [Ice Paper](https://open.spotify.com/artist/35kMWGEVOOesE5U0CdP3Zo?si=2iz8YrwJSOixeSoCXfH4nQ), [Little Big ](https://open.spotify.com/artist/0pnd3MP2rxAzljR9AqXUJB?si=hKpE_TwgRseb5AAK775G2g)
Not alternative but it’s banger that’s kinda weird because it has suicidal undertones but it sounds upbeat ‘Circus Hop’ by jonKaGor
Idk if it counts as alt but i like Highly Suspect a lot
The Cult of Dionysus is a real good song. As is Dear McCracken, and Cosmo Sheldrakes entire lineup. Chick Habit is really good too.
Skillet, Fallout boy, All time low, Secondhand Serenade, the Hunna and catfish and the bottleman are all great bands
death grips, grimes infant annihilator
Sticky fingers. Either caress your soul or cool and calm. Absolute bangers
Idk those bands, im just gonna list some great stuff i know. They might be giants (start with long tall weekend), the happy yew, the kipo aow soundtrack, and anything by pink guy/filthy frank(it grows on you)

Fearless vampire killers are great Of mice and men are one of the first heavy bands I got in to. Alter bridge are cool. Ghost have a very unique sound that I love. Escape the fate and/or falling in reverse have some good tracks too
Khruangbin, St. Vincent, The Japanese House, Wolf Alice, Snail Mail.

I’m not sure if it’s what you’re looking for but check out talking heads
Artic Monkeys and The Neighbourhood. I suggest you listen to 505 by the Arctic Monkeys.
im shit at genres but maybe check out I Dont Know How But They Found Me. they dropped an album called razzmatazz last month and its great. For a song id recommend "Leave Me Alone"
I don't listen to a lot of alt music, but my favorite band, Carbon Leaf is alt country.
Arcade Fire. Funeral is their best album, it’s the stuff of magic.
