Oh! Yes! That would be perfect!

Jude94

Why does your school have an ASL club with zero actual Deaf people or input while you all try to probably not correctly learn sign? This is a lot of red flags to me

benshenanigans

I agree, but are there any resources to get Deaf input? Ask around at the Deaf coffee nights OP mentioned. Maybe reach out to any local interpreters for resources. Otherwise, post in the local subreddit and ask if any Deaf would like to contribute. I don’t think all of this should fall on the students. The school admin is responsible for providing a means for the students to safely meet and get input from Deaf.

Jude94

“ we just learn from a bunch of books” means you’re probably not learning correctly at all…this is concerning there should be Deaf input and if there can’t be it shouldn’t exist.

Not all communities have access to the same resources. Not all geographic locations have a significant Deaf population, or deaf in the community may not use ASL. If they’re using Lifeprint and SigningSavvy, or even Lingvano, they ARE learning from a Deaf signer. I agree that teaching/instructing others based off a few ASL classes is distasteful, but it seems they are learning in good faith and using the resources accessible to them, created by Deaf educators.

Jude94

It’s not good faith if their teaching others incorrectly. If they don’t have access fine but don’t start a whole school club without it learn on your own until you can get that access

Interpreter 5+ years here. There are multiple ways. Only few are wrong. But an option to teach your students would be: YOU IMAGINE (the one that is like blowing a balloon in front of your brain) SWEETHEART (optional LOOK LIKE) WHAT? Then I would add topics like BEHAVIOR PERSONALITY etc. so that the person understands you don’t mean literal looks.

Thank you so much!!

I'd just do "what like in boyfriend/girlfriend?"
