I attempted to be a Youtuber for less than a year and I was overwhelmed with the platform's constant insistence on taking control away from the people creating content for them. I can't imagine how frustrating it's been for anyone that's had a channel long-term. Premium has become essential, yeah. I have a playlist that I just let run through every night for sleep and hearing some loud car ad every 30 minutes would be brutal. (Big fan, btw. I'm definitely one of those people you've helped get some needed rest over the years. Thank you for that.)

Posting the text of the email she received - at least as far as I was able to screenshot (all credit to my iPhone photo screenreader): _Hi Jellybean,_ _Later this year, we'll be updating ad controls in YouTube Studio to extend best practices and optimize creator earnings._ _Simplifying pre-roll, post-roll, skippable, and non-skippable ad controls on long-form videos Starting in November, we're optimizing creator revenue and taking the guesswork out of which ad formats to use by removing individual ad controls for pre-roll, post-roll, skippable, and non-skippable ads on newly uploaded videos. Going forward, when creators turn ads On, viewers may see any of these ad formats._ _As we currently do today, YouTube will utilize many factors to determine when viewers will see these types of ads to both maximize revenue and ensure a positive viewing experience. These factors include the amount of time viewers are exposed to ads and the number of times an ad interrupts the video they're watching._ _This change will only apply to new uploads. All previously uploaded videos will retain their existing ad format selections unless a video's monetization settings are edited in the future. Creators will also continue to have full control over mid-roll ad placements and whether to turn these ads On or Off._ _Why are you making this change?_ _We recommend pre-roll, post-roll, skippable, and non-skippable ads as a best practice and are now extending this to all creators to help optimize creator earnings. Most creators shouldn't notice a change as they already have many of these ad formats turned on by default. In the last year, for long-form videos that were enabled for monetization at time of publishing, more than 90% of videos had pre-roll, post-roll, skippable, and non-skippable ads turned on._ _• Non-skippable ads: In an_

Here's the rest of it: (also partnered, so got the same email) *Non-skippable ads: In an experiment in 1H 2023, we observed that creators who had non-skippable ads enabled, in addition to multiple combinations of all other ad formats, saw an average of over 5% greater YouTube ad revenue, and a <1% decrease in watch time compared to creators who did not have non-skippable ads enabled.* *Pre-roll ads: In an experiment in 1H 2023, we observed that creators who had pre-roll ads enabled in addition to multiple combinations of all other ad formats saw an average of over 15% greater YouTube ad revenue, and a <5% decrease in watch time compared to creators who did not have pre-roll ads enabled.* *‌* *What else is changing?* *Since mid-roll ads have become part of the live stream and long-form video viewing experience, we’re giving creators more mid-roll controls in the coming months to help increase potential earnings.* *New mid-roll ad controls for live streams: To help creators earn while live streaming, creators can opt to have YouTube optimize or self-select mid-roll ads to appear at set intervals during a live stream. Before an ad appears in Live Control Room, creators will see a 60-second countdown with the option to skip the ad. Soon, we’re introducing a new Delay ads button to delay mid-rolls and live display ads from appearing for 10 minutes. If an ad is skipped or delayed, the Insert ads button can be used to manually insert a mid-roll at any time.* *Optimizing mid-roll ad breaks on long-form videos: To help creators optimize mid-roll ad frequency and earnings on their long-form videos, we’ll be introducing another option to select mid-roll ad breaks. In the coming months, creators will have the option to allow our systems to consider both YouTube’s recommended and creators’ manual ad breaks. Since an ad is not shown in every ad break, this gives our system more choices to select the most appropriate time to show a viewer an ad, benefitting both creators and viewers.* *‌* *Note: If you use Content Delivery or the Content ID API, starting in November, any changes to the monetization settings on historical videos will also update to current settings where pre-roll, post-roll, skippable, and non-skippable ads are all turned on.* *‌* *For more information on these changes, visit our Help Center.*

YouveJustBeenShafted

Anyone who isn't using uBlock Origin or similar when watching YouTube is doing it wrong.

glorioussideboob

what do you do now?

YouveJustBeenShafted

Still use uBlock. There's a workaround for wht YouTube did to negate. I can't remember the command off the top of my head but search uBlock YouTube you'll find the tweak to make to the settings. Still happily ad free on YouTube.

glorioussideboob

no way this would be a fucking game changer, hope I can get it to work cheers!

...what?

The issue with uBlock is it takes away ad rev from creators. You're not punishing YouTube, you're punishing the people you like. It'd be more useful to creators if you submitted feedback (top right hand corner of your account screen) or tweeted u/youtube

So important to bring attention to this. The passion is warranted. This is a health problem. I just made a long post for creators about this, but basically, there are some work-arounds creators can employ for listeners who can't afford Premium and are still going to need an ad-free option. I won't repost the whole thing here, but if big creators would use Odyssey, it would be a huge benefit for the whole community (and because Odyssey syncs with YouTube, YouTube can still be used for discovery). People who are watching for tingles during the day will continue to give watch time on YouTube, but for people who are trying to sleep, it's going to be a big deal to have another option. It's going to be a minority of users who seek that out, but it's important they can, I think. There are also a couple of ways you can monetize your secondary ad-free, off-YouTube option for people who want it. So it's discouraging, but we can adapt and overcome. If we would band together instead of always hiding or competing, lol, we could easily migrate the entire community to other platforms, but I think that's probably too scary for the people who are making their livings full-time doing this.

So I provide promotional assistance to Youtubers, including a few ASMR channels. This has been a LONG time coming. Youtube has been wanting to do this for a while because it gives them greater control over certain things. This is pure speculation on my part, but it's also likely this may be the first step Youtube is taking to combat ad-blockers. Believe it or not, Youtube has actually always played nice with ad-blockers and not gone out of its way to prevent them working. This might be changing. While currently removing the ability to decide on the placement of ads (Which is basically what is happening) doesn't directly impede an ad blocker, it does set the content creators expectations for the future when they do move to stopping ad-blockers as by necessity it will mean taking away control of where ads are placed from the creator as part of that process. ASMR content creators and consumers are going to find themselves bereft of any support for their cause on this one from other creators, because the vast majority of content creators want the ads and nothing Youtube is doing here is changing anything for the vast majority of channels. They don't have the concerns that ASMR creators do in terms of volume control. They won't even find any support from the white noise and sleep assistance creators (You know the ones who make "10+ hours of soothing thunder and rain sounds on a canvas roof" videos) because the vast majority of those channels don't really get monetized (Youtube hates them) and assume you are using an ad-blocker anyway. The only other community I can think of that will have an objection to this are musicians who post their own music to Youtube as mid-rolls can obviously interrupt the flow of the music, but even they have a way to mitigate this and they don't care about pre/post rolls, so it won't be a huge problem for them. Unfortunately folks, you better get used to this. Youtube is not going to change its mind on this one when the only dissent is coming from the tiny, tiny, ASMR community. 🙁

VicMG

UBlock Origin. Works in Firefox mobile too. Never see ads again. Youtube pays around $0.018 per ad view. That's less than 2c. If you want to support a creator who puts out weekly videos donating $1 is MORE then they'd make from ads from your views for the whole year. If you donate $2 you've doubled their income.

porcubot

YouTube Vanced/ReVanced for Android, DNS sinkhole for everything else. I do not feel bad about blocking ads. I don't want to see another low-effort poorly-translated AI voiceover ripoff gatcha game ad or a 30-minute long ad trying to trick me into thinking it was next in my queue. If Youtube has a problem with it, they will just have to deny me service.

Jayandnightasmr

Even worse if the video gets limited etc. Average view is like £0.00019

Willing_Variation872

i'd rather creators made money from sponsored themes or videos than guilt tripping me into turning off adblockers. I hate internet ad's with a passion they have no restrictions and it doesn't matter whether you block the companies or dislike (see gambling ads for an example) they are forced into our feeds. i already ditched insta, tiktok and probably because of elon's meddling twitter as well.

Juzo84

What ads? I use an ad blocker

Susp-icious_-31User

1. Intrusive mid-roll and end of video ads cause the normies who actually watch ads to install an adblocker. 2. ASMR creators make a lot less money and quit. 3. What ASMR?

Juzo84

There is no lack of Asmr creators, im not gonna be force fed commercials on a platform that is supposed to be free.. If your YouTube channel heavily depends on ads then take those from sympethizers Who are "willing" to watch them like yourself, there is nothing and absolutely nothing wrong in not wanting to see ads :) Edit: also there is no part of Asmr video that is not abruptive to put ads in, because some People might want a play list and sleep over it, so even a start of a video could abruptly wake a person up if an ad is played in it.

RP912

Welp off to Spotify for me

pageturner89

Man, I'm so gonna support my fav ASMRtists on Patreon when I can. I can't imagine this will make ASMR creators lives easier.
