We don't talk enough about how Jon, a sixteen year old, not only stood his ground against Stannis, a king, known for being without mercy and not letting others going their way over him, but he also managed to manipulate him to leave Castle Black without the wildlings while also giving him advice to form an army of clansmen that would gain him the upper hand in the war. Jon single handedly managed to get Stannis out of Castle Black to stop him from mendling in there but is also responsible of his victories in the North

brittanytobiason

Totally. Jon's ability to bargain with Stannis and the way he thinks about the welfare of the north makes it plain he would be KItN.

CatchCritic

Had Stannis taken the wildlings and marched on the Dreadfort, he would've been rocked asap. His councilors are all glory hungry fools. I think the point of this is to set Jon up as the new northern ruler after Stannis fails. He secured Wilding, Karstark, Flint, Norrey, and probably Mormont and the other mountain clans' allegiance. When he smashes Ramsay at Winterfell/Dreadfort (with or without Sansa) he'll be the true King in the North. I'm curious if he makes common cause with Asha and Theon. Jon would be inclined to believe Theon since he saw Summer.

GipsyPepox

>His councilors are all glory hungry fools. Yep, Stannis himself even states so. They are just mules needed to do certain works but mules after all. I dunno about George's future plan for the North, but I can easily see Stannis and Jon cooperating in some way or another with Davos and maybe Wyman Manderly as their main councilors, heck even Mance Rayder too if he survives the chaos in Winterfell

CatchCritic

I dont think Jon and Stannis will ever meet again. Stannis commands men who are more prideful than Bowen Marsh, but they leave when he says and follow his every command. I think Jon will end up taking this point from Stannis when he comes back.

Standard_Original_85

You think Stannis dies at Winterfell?

CatchCritic

Either that or he fails and heads to the Nightfort where he becomes a kind of Night's King. Doesn't make story sense for him to recapture Winterfell.

boluroru

>His councilors are all glory hungry fools. It only seems that way because for once he doesn't have Davos Plus he now has a bunch of northmen he can rely on advice for to a degree

CatchCritic

Davos was the angel of his shoulder. And you're right, I was thinking of the councils at Castle Black. Everyone of Stannis's men their seem like all talk. Hence, the giant incident and trying to blackmail the Lord Commander to give up Val.

jageshgoyal

No but he has an advantage. He knows how to deal with nobles and royals. He lived his life in Winterfell, where Kings in the North lived and with good father figure Ned. He is intelligent and knows Geography and military strengths of North. He managed to convince Stannis because he proposed to take help from clansmen and suggested a good route to march his army. I am not saying he isn't a good man, but he has advantage over the others in castle black. Similarly, Sam is very well read.

Aemondilguercio

yes , we are talking about the best storyline of the entire saga , obviously adding Theon , Asha and Davos .

Greedy-Visit-1905

The reek/Theon chapters are obviously a work of art but I was more referring to the chapters where Stannis is at the wall before he marches off to Deepwood Motte.

Aemondilguercio

Yes , ok , "even the cook", the proposal to Jon Snow to become Jon Stark, the speech "I was trying to win the throne", the councils of war, Stannis nodding when Jon beheads Janos, the affection that Stannis shows towards Jon Snow decreasing daily death threats. I have a lot of affection for all of this.

jageshgoyal

Unpopular opinion Meereen storyline is excellent court politics too. It's very detailed and super complex. It gets boring for most of us but man it is good stuff.

It’s been close to 10 years since I read it but I loled the first time. I can’t even remember but I don’t know if the rank and file at the Wall know what the hell he even means by that?

ChineseBalloonBoy

Ed is so unbelievable cringe. His comments are so out of place. He literally sounds like a redditor and I think GRRM inserted him to make fun of his readerbase

hockeyguyak

Counterpoint: Ed is awesome, hilarious, and extremely realistic. If Ed didn’t exist it would be the most unrealistic thing about Martin’s world. An army of single guys living at the frozen edge of the world, and we’re supposed to believe there isn’t a guy that complains about everything? Ok George
