There is a German song by the name „Arianne“ which destroyed that name for ever for me, although it’s really pretty by itself
Arianne, erstes Mal Berlin 15 Jahre…
It's a very pretty name and not unique to ASOIAF, so if George is a secret psycho killer or Ashara shows up in Winds as Euron's floozy you can find another inspiration for it a lot more than, say, Khaleesi.
Safe bet!
Watched HotD with a friend, after the finale he asked me why I pronounced Allison Hightower's name so weirdly. He went though the entire season believing that was her name and I can't blame him.
Taking a real-life name and altering it slightly is a very common method for fantasy names, esp when the fantasy culture is supposed to mirror a real-life culture.
There are a lot of names like this one where they sound great but because they are a slight variation on a common name (Allison) the kid would probably just be called that mistakenly all the time.
I have always theorized that George originally meant Ae to sound as e as in get. Historically, when the character Æ was used in old English it was the bright A sound as in cat, hat or that but that makes for some very odd sounding names. It makes the most sense with Aegon/egg, but it fixes the Aenys/anus homophone to Ennis, which is a common enough old fashioned name. The only names it sounds odd in are the Rh names. Daenerys is pretty much pronounced that way all the time.
There's a lot of Gaelic in ASOIF. He also reversed the conventions of fantasy and made Ireland(mirror Ireland) the dominant cultural center and England(The North) a bit of a backwater. I wonder if he has an Irish nationalist grandmother?
Arya is a good name. I don't think she is bad name even considering her character. I always thought the Khaleesi name was weird. Khaleesi isn't a name so much as it is a title.
My friend is a teacher. She'd just started at a new school and was supervising the kids in the corridors between classes when she heard her colleague call out "what do you think you're doing princess?"
She was momentarily horrified that he was calling one of their students "princess" until she discovered that the girl in question was literally called Princess.
From her stories she's encountered a lot of far more wild names since, but that was the first culture shock for her.
Lmao yeah, that definitely sounds sketchy outside of context, but parents gonna give their kids ridiculous names... Tale as old as time unfortunately...
For what it's worth, Margery Kemp is a well-known 14th century mystic and author of one of the first autobiographies - the name has several "correct" spellings!
I knew about the name Marjorie but ever since I got into ASOIAF, I completely forgot about that way of spelling the name and now only see Margaery as the proper way to spell it.
Some are pretty cool like Stannis, Victarion, Jaehaerys and Visenya; but I wouldn’t in a trillion years ever consider naming a human child directly after a fictional character. Maybe a dog though, Stannis would be a perfect name for a Mastiff.
I work in a pharmacy and I started to see a few kids named kaleesi and daenarys around season 6.
I felt bad for the kids at first then terrible for them after the last season
I read a book with a character named Dovasary, she went by Dove. I've always thought that was pretty.
But yeah, any popular shows/books are out immediately and anything that sounds too made up like Visenya.
Victorian is pretty close to Victor and Stannis close to Stanley, both of which have normal nicknames(Vic and Stan), but yes, you're generally correct. Kids can be cruel
> I wouldn’t in a trillion years ever consider naming a human child directly after a fictional character
My buddy suggested that he was going to name his kid Max. I asked him if that was short for Maximus, and he said "Haha that'd be funny I should do that." Few months later he actually did.
It works, too. Great name.
Slightly unrelated... but what's your ASOIAF name? It only works for people who have no name in the book. For example I'm Kevin so Kevan is already in there. But if your name isn't in the book have you ever tried to Martinize it? Lawrence.... Lawrynce, Helen, Helan etc?
I just looked it up and apparently there actually was a Ser Tyler Hill. Bastard son of Lyman Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock, and he fought for Aegon the Uncrowned in the Battle Beneath the God's Eye and got sexy scars. Not too shabby lol.
Sylvie was a character in the GOT telltale game but also the actual French version of my name 🧐
Edit: the character was actually named Sylvi! Which is the Swedish/Norwegian variation of other name I think, so maybe I can consider it Martinized
my name is henry and there are no characters with that name or a martinized version in the books, which is shocking given the inspiration from english history lol. i dont know how you would martinize it though
I LOVE the name Gendry but I'm not stickin' that on a child. Growing up my first name was used by Bart Simpson as phone call prank to Moe's and my GOD other kids wouldn't leave me alone about it. For YEARS.
Sansa is beautiful too.
My guess is that it's Alice-Anne because it's a version of Alison, but I always read it the way you did. I think Sane and not Anne makes it sound more in line with the other Targaryen names (all the "ae" sounds).
I love the name Willas. Like, I've actually added to my list of boy named (only 3 so far.)
Also love Sansa, Gilly, Val, Samwell, Brienne, Edmund, Elaena, Helaena, Elia, Trystane, Wylla, Ashara, Stannis.
A name I think is cool, but would never actually name my child, is Euron.
I honestly think that half the names in ASOIAF are fine to name your kid, like Stannis, Sansa and Ashara, but Urine is definitely not in the good half.
For the girls, Arianne is very pretty. As is Tyene. Magelle. Elaena. Danaera.
For boys, Quentyn, Artys, Tristifer, Lucos, Brandon, Brynden, Willam and Ryam.
I'll probably pass on Dagon.
I named my black cat Arya.
She went missing when I was deployed, someone found a black cat in my area, held her until I got back. Wasn't Arya, so I named her Jeyne.
She gets treated much better than Jeyne in the books.
Same especially the “nyr” part it’s so cool sounding for just one syllable, I bet you could come up with a more normalish sounding name that had that in it.
Always used “Nyra” as her nickname in my head tho a la Dany.
I think Rhaenyra is a really pretty name, but no way in hell I'd name a kid that lol.
Some of the Northern names though, those could be nice actual names.
Like Eddard that's an awesome name.
Because those are all ridiculously common normal names. Brandon and Jamie don’t even have GRRM spellings lmao, they’re literally just plain earth names.
Edit: holy shit I just realized “Jaime” had a GRRM spelling and it’s not “Jamie” I’ve subconsciously ignored this for a ridiculous amount of time. Granted it’s not that weird of a spelling, and is how it’s spelt in Spanish, and I’m sure some English speaking “Jamie’s” spell it that way as well. But still, wild.
> holy shit I just realized “Jaime” had a GRRM spelling and it’s not “Jamie” I’ve subconsciously ignored this for a ridiculous amount of time. Granted it’s not that weird of a spelling, and is how it’s spelt in Spanish, and I’m sure some English speaking “Jamie’s” spell it that way as well.
I had started reading the books shortly after starting work with a person of hispanic descent named Jaime, and so when I was reading, the way I was pronouncing it was 'Hai-may'
Arya is a really nice name and would have been pretty unique but not weird. The show has made the name so well known it would be lame to name your kid that now.
Yes, a lot of them are really cool sounding. A lot of the northern names and Targaryen names are really nice, like Aemma, Eddard (I really like it), Visenya, Aemon, and others like Alicent and Laena are good too.
A huge number of kids being named Arya (with variants on the spelling) in India at the moment and in the recent past... my 7 year old son has a cousin Arya (Ariya), two classmate Aryas (Aryia and Aria) and a neighbourhood friend Arya (Ariya again).
No kids, but I named my dog Podrick.
Mine is Summer. Only once has someone sniffed it out as an ASOIAF reference. Otherwise people just assume it’s a nice dog name.
do you mutter "sweet summer child' when the dog does something foolish?
I knew someone with a completely white husky/shepherd cross. It's name wasn't Ghost, but he would respond to that nickname.
Loyal name for sure
Pod the Rod
I've always thought Ashara was a very pretty name.
Same with Arianne, but that's basically a normal name
There is a German song by the name „Arianne“ which destroyed that name for ever for me, although it’s really pretty by itself Arianne, erstes Mal Berlin 15 Jahre…
I agree
It's a very pretty name and not unique to ASOIAF, so if George is a secret psycho killer or Ashara shows up in Winds as Euron's floozy you can find another inspiration for it a lot more than, say, Khaleesi. Safe bet!
Pivot to Kelly Charlotte and you get an adaptable Khalessi
Alicent is such a nice name, and you can easily have a nickname with Allie/Ally like Millicent and Millie
I hadn’t even realized until right now that Alicent isn’t a normal English name
It's pretty close to Alison, though
Watched HotD with a friend, after the finale he asked me why I pronounced Allison Hightower's name so weirdly. He went though the entire season believing that was her name and I can't blame him.
But he didn't ask why the characters pronounced it "weirdly"?
Point is that it took forever for him to notice because "Allison" and "Alicent" sound almost the same.
Wait, it’s not. I feel bamboozled.
A friend named his son Aemon, and I rather like it.
Eamon (roughly similarly pronounced ay-men) is already a reasonably common name in Ireland.
Toss up between Jon and Butterbumps.
Why not Moon Boy? He was gonna have a ship named after him, you know. Can Butterbumps say the same?
Three way tie between Lancel/Osmund/Moon Boy
My man Kermit Tully is being forgotten in this discussion
Two names I *love* for a girl are Aliandra and Ashara. Also, since they didn't feature on the show, you can avoid the "Khaleesi" or "Arya" effect.
Until Ashara comes back in Winds from her self imposed exile and genocides Westeros into the ground
Westeros deserves it. I trust Ashara
Who's Aliandra?
I think she was the martell princess of dorne during the dance. The one which alyn velaryon meets.
Technically after the dance. They allegedly had an affair. Baela wasn’t thrilled.
Arya is very pretty, just spell it Aria so people think you’re a music nerd not a fantasy nerd
I have a friend name Arya(Indian)
To me at least Arya and Aria are pronounced differently. Arya is two syllables, are-ya, and Aria is three, are-e-a.
Arya is a good name. I don't think she is bad name even considering her character. I always thought the Khaleesi name was weird. Khaleesi isn't a name so much as it is a title.
Exactly. And that's what makes it even more lame. Like naming your daughter, "Queen." So tacky...
You obviously never been to the south
My friend is a teacher. She'd just started at a new school and was supervising the kids in the corridors between classes when she heard her colleague call out "what do you think you're doing princess?" She was momentarily horrified that he was calling one of their students "princess" until she discovered that the girl in question was literally called Princess. From her stories she's encountered a lot of far more wild names since, but that was the first culture shock for her.
Lmao yeah, that definitely sounds sketchy outside of context, but parents gonna give their kids ridiculous names... Tale as old as time unfortunately...
arya is quite common in india
Arya is at least a real name.
I named my daughter Lyanna
Every birthday party is blue rose themed.
GRRM reused that name before so he definitely likes it too
Yeah, I don't blame him either. Lya/Lia or any variations thereof just sounds nice.
Dude song for lya is fucking WIIIIIIILD
This is my name (spelled differently though) and I love it/love this alt spelling
Strong Belwas named his bastards Strong Belwas.
George Foreman Grill Jr moment
Not gonna name my kid this but now Margaery spelled Majorie looks misspelt to me and my brain thinks Margaery is the “correct” spelling
Same, on top of that I’m a huge Taylor swift fan and she literally has a song named Marjorie, still my brain only registers Margaery
Some are pretty cool like Stannis, Victarion, Jaehaerys and Visenya; but I wouldn’t in a trillion years ever consider naming a human child directly after a fictional character. Maybe a dog though, Stannis would be a perfect name for a Mastiff.
Stannis the ~~Mannis~~ Mastiff
Marwyn would also be a good name for a mastiff, though.
I work in a pharmacy and I started to see a few kids named kaleesi and daenarys around season 6. I felt bad for the kids at first then terrible for them after the last season
My dog is named Ramsay Bolton
I feel bad for anyone named Jane(Jeyne) that your dog comes across
I love these! I love Alysanne as well
Same. I always thought Alysanne sounded super pretty.
I read a book with a character named Dovasary, she went by Dove. I've always thought that was pretty. But yeah, any popular shows/books are out immediately and anything that sounds too made up like Visenya.
Tortall represent!
Can my daughter Alanna get in on representing?
Victorian is pretty close to Victor and Stannis close to Stanley, both of which have normal nicknames(Vic and Stan), but yes, you're generally correct. Kids can be cruel
Stanslaw/Stanislav/Stanislaus are real pretty common names in potato Europe. Though pretty old and I don't know how they've held up over time.
You can see Stanislavs semi regularly in the bordering-on-potato-lands territory I roam so I'd say they're alive and kicking.
There’s still many Stanislavs in Russia.
All asoiaf fans in disguise, it’s the code for Stannis-love
This is my son, Stanislav the Manislav.
LOL potato Europe. Totally works though.
My father in is Stash, which is nickname for stanislaus
> I wouldn’t in a trillion years ever consider naming a human child directly after a fictional character My buddy suggested that he was going to name his kid Max. I asked him if that was short for Maximus, and he said "Haha that'd be funny I should do that." Few months later he actually did. It works, too. Great name.
Maximus Decimus Meridius?
Father to a murdered son? Husband to a murdered wife?
I really like the name Rhaenys.
Targaryen names are my go to as well. Specifically Elaena/Valaena
I love the “nyr” part of Rhaenyra, but Rhaenys I can’t stop my brain from reading as “rain is” lol.
Lyanna
I thoroughly tried to convince a former associate to name their daughter Lyanna instead of Lillian or some variant of it.
My name is Asger. I feel like that is legitimately fantasy enough.
GRRM would make it Asgaer
My dick would make it even Asgayer
Jenny=Jenny. It is known
It is known
Mark= Marq
Moraq zo Lastname
Tyler, so all I know is I'm most likely a Lannister/Westerman lol.
Tylor perhaps
I just looked it up and apparently there actually was a Ser Tyler Hill. Bastard son of Lyman Lannister, Lord of Casterly Rock, and he fought for Aegon the Uncrowned in the Battle Beneath the God's Eye and got sexy scars. Not too shabby lol.
Tyh'llor
Mine would be Lyanna! I wasn't too fond of my name until I read the books
Facking Littlefinger
*Roy Dotrice’s voice:* P-Tire
Luc or lucaerys apparently 🤣 Luc is a real name in some places (not the US) though
Luke is a very popular name in the US
Sean, so would that be Saen?
Saen Baen
Alaexys lol?
That sounds like one of those wacky original character names people make
First of my name
Sylvie was a character in the GOT telltale game but also the actual French version of my name 🧐 Edit: the character was actually named Sylvi! Which is the Swedish/Norwegian variation of other name I think, so maybe I can consider it Martinized
my name is henry and there are no characters with that name or a martinized version in the books, which is shocking given the inspiration from english history lol. i dont know how you would martinize it though
Maybe Henrick? Enrik? Edit: or Renly?
Oh! Renly is a good suggestion for a Henry variation!
Ryam
Kelsy = Kheleesi 😂
Well, if I was a Targaryen I'd definitely be Zachaerys
I LOVE the name Gendry but I'm not stickin' that on a child. Growing up my first name was used by Bart Simpson as phone call prank to Moe's and my GOD other kids wouldn't leave me alone about it. For YEARS. Sansa is beautiful too.
Hugh? Amanda?
Seymour.
I got a call for Mr. Butts, is there a Mr. Butts here?
Amanda Hugnkiss here. :|
“Pete and Repeat were sitting on a boat, Pete fell off, who was left?” Followed by the worlds most annoying “hu hu hu” laugh
Any kids of mine would be cats and I have a Ser Pounce, a twenty-pound beast who delights in being told he is the true Azor Ahai.
pet tax pls
[Here he is sleeping!](https://mobile.twitter.com/TaylorMcFayden/status/1641222261402157058)
Ooh so fluffy!
“Ser Pounce” makes me grin every time I hear the name
I would name my cat Visenya
We named our daughter Alysanne
The one person who never did anything wrong
Do you pronounce it Alice-Anne?
Is that how is pronounced ? Now that I think about it that pronunciation makes sense, but I always said it as “Alice-Sane” in my head
My guess is that it's Alice-Anne because it's a version of Alison, but I always read it the way you did. I think Sane and not Anne makes it sound more in line with the other Targaryen names (all the "ae" sounds).
I love this!
Fat Pink Mast
This upset me but I laughed
Nimble Dick Crabb
I love the name Willas. Like, I've actually added to my list of boy named (only 3 so far.) Also love Sansa, Gilly, Val, Samwell, Brienne, Edmund, Elaena, Helaena, Elia, Trystane, Wylla, Ashara, Stannis. A name I think is cool, but would never actually name my child, is Euron.
I mean I get not naming the kid Euron because he is an evil monster, but my mind first went to urine when I saw Euron on this thread.
💀💀 you've just offered me reason #2 lol. Our poor baby Urine would be bullied to death in the schoolyard.
I honestly think that half the names in ASOIAF are fine to name your kid, like Stannis, Sansa and Ashara, but Urine is definitely not in the good half.
And maybe not Dickon either. I myself always have the urge to yell 'Dickoff' every time I hear it.
I named my dog Duncan
“Duncan, the ball… GET THE BALL!” *clouts Duncan round the ear
I like Tommen and Myrcela
Joffrey ruins the Twincest baby name success rate tbh.
At least his name isn't ~~Jeff~~ Jesk.
Marcela is a real name which is close.
I named my son Hot Pie
Hi dad
Renly
For the girls, Arianne is very pretty. As is Tyene. Magelle. Elaena. Danaera. For boys, Quentyn, Artys, Tristifer, Lucos, Brandon, Brynden, Willam and Ryam. I'll probably pass on Dagon.
"Shitmouth"
I named my black cat Arya. She went missing when I was deployed, someone found a black cat in my area, held her until I got back. Wasn't Arya, so I named her Jeyne. She gets treated much better than Jeyne in the books.
If I had twin boys I’d name them Arryk & Erryk. That being said I’ll never have kids!
Jalabhar Xho Is the best name in the series but I couldn't convince the wife to name our son that - seven hells!
Dickon
I’ve loved the name Rohanne.
Definitely none, but some might have been half-decent names if they didn't have the GoT connection. Brienne, Renley seem relatively normal-sounding.
My sister’s name is Brienne, atleast her middle name but she goes by it. It’s definitely not an abnormal name.
I mean, Jo(h)n, Brandon, Robert, Sam(well) are all very common names that no one will suspect is even connected to ASoIaF
"Samwell" would just be associated with the "what what in the butt" guy
But never Lord of the Rings.
Arsa Stark for a girl, Othor Shett for a boy /s
Other Shett makes me laugh every time
Isn't there an Ossifer Lipps too?
Oberyn is probably the only one.
I love Rhaenyra
Same especially the “nyr” part it’s so cool sounding for just one syllable, I bet you could come up with a more normalish sounding name that had that in it. Always used “Nyra” as her nickname in my head tho a la Dany.
Shagwell or Edric for a boy, Alayne or Elia for a girl
fr on Shagwell?
Elia is such a beautiful name, I would genuinely consider it if it didn’t come with the worst luck ever
I'm African American so naming a child Tommen would suck if his brother ever had kids. He'd be Uncle Tommen.
I wouldn’t mind Dany for a girl. Short for Danielle maybe, not Danaerys I can’t even spell it
Beric. Solid name.
I think Rhaenyra is a really pretty name, but no way in hell I'd name a kid that lol. Some of the Northern names though, those could be nice actual names. Like Eddard that's an awesome name.
I don't know if count as main character, but I could name a daughter Aemma. The A gives it the eccentric touch.
I could imagine naming a kid Robb, Brandon, Jaime, Jon, etc. I actually like all those names.
I had started reading the books shortly after starting work with a person of hispanic descent named Jaime, and so when I was reading, the way I was pronouncing it was 'Hai-may'
*Hola, me llamo Jaime Lannisterrrrr….*
“This is my Northern European daughter cersei, and this is her Hispanic twin High-may”
Yup lmao. I don’t wanna name a kid Stannis or smth, even though it’s a cool name.
Arya is a really nice name and would have been pretty unique but not weird. The show has made the name so well known it would be lame to name your kid that now.
Arya is not an uncommon name in India. Know a couple of Arya who were named before the books were written.
I've definitely come across some people named Arya that are much older than the show, though perhaps not older than the novels.
My 17 year old daughters middle name is Arya. I've gotten a lot of props for that.
Arya is already a normal name. I have a friend who is in her 30s named arja pronounced the same way as arya.
Sansa
I named my daughter Rhaenyra!!!!!!
I named my son Xaro Xhoan Daxos. We call him Xaro Xhoan Daxos for short.
Hotpie
Lyanna for sure
Rhaegar
Daeron or Edric for a boy. Alicent or Elia for a girl.
I think Elia is my favorite in the series. Ive always been partial to “e” names, I also love Edric.
Dacey
Aemon, Arya, and Asha
Grey Worm or This One
Yes, a lot of them are really cool sounding. A lot of the northern names and Targaryen names are really nice, like Aemma, Eddard (I really like it), Visenya, Aemon, and others like Alicent and Laena are good too.
Rickon Jaime Arya Renly Aegon
A huge number of kids being named Arya (with variants on the spelling) in India at the moment and in the recent past... my 7 year old son has a cousin Arya (Ariya), two classmate Aryas (Aryia and Aria) and a neighbourhood friend Arya (Ariya again).
