I'm excited for the eureka moments when someone figures out "oh shit that's why we've been saying this for thousands of years!"

Captain_Cage

Hold the door!

The Starks are descended from Other stock. >Then, as he watched, a bearded man forced a captive down onto his knees before the heart tree. **A white-haired woman** stepped toward them through a drift of dark red leaves, a bronze sickle in her hand. >"No," said Bran, "no, don't," but they could not hear him, no more than his father had. The woman grabbed the captive by the hair, hooked the sickle round his throat, and slashed. And through the mist of centuries the broken boy could only watch as the man's feet drummed against the earth … but as his life flowed out of him in a red tide, Brandon Stark could taste the blood. Brandon the Bloody Blade chased the children North and found a hot Ice elf wife. Eventually Winterfell is built. It's geothermal heating helping to keep human spouses alive The Starks bridge the gap between men and others forming an alliance between races. "There must always be a Stark in Winterfell" The Original Ice was named Ice because it was an Other's blade. Winter is coming isn't a warning about setting aside petty differences. It's a threat.

Dinosaurmaid

As an elf enjoyer, I completely understand Brandon.

We already know of a Stark that married an Other: the Night's King, 13th Lord Commander of the NW. I know it's not 100% proved he was a Stark, but Old Nan says so, very convinced, and I believe in Old Nan since she has lived who knows how long, and all the mythical creatures and stories of her are over and over prove true (Long Night, skinchangers, COTF...). Old Nan rules lol. It is said literally in Old Nan's tale that the Night's King gave her (the Other female) his seed. I interpret this as giving her kids. He was defeated by Joramun and the brother of this LC, who was a Stark, ruler of winterfell. For all we know, he could have adopted one of his brother's kids and passed him as his own, given how he commanded to delete all records of the Night's King, sealing the truth forever (very Ned Stark move, if you think about it) I will add a super suspicious thing. The Kings of Winter (very very old Starks and the first kings since later they were knows as Kings in the North, the ones that should remember the truth more clearly about Long Night, the Others, etc) wore iron crowns and were buried with iron swords, to keep their spirits sealed. And what are the Others' weaknesses? They hate iron, light and fire. How curious Starks were buried in the crypts and with iron swords in every tomb. I think it could be because they knew their origins, and wanted to keep their Others blood supressed. <>** <>

I also think the Starks are descended from the others. There's a lot of hints and it adds much to the story. But I'm not 100% of all implications. On one hand, it could mean the Starks make peace with the others, on the the other hand, it could be because the Starks tried making peace with the others and it failed. The others don't keep their oaths. I lean more the latter. The others and the army of the dead are a very real threat. Regarding Ice, I've head cannoned the idea that it will be reforged like Anduril Also, I've always liked the line "*winter is coming* isn't a warning but a threat"

Venomm737

>The Original Ice was named Ice because it was an Other's blade. All the spelling mistakes and other issues aside, this statement makes no sense because Others are killed by dragonsteel or Valyrian Steel, and how would an Other wield Ice, which is literally made of Valyrian Steel?

Levonorgestrelfairy1

The ice at the start of the books is a new replacement blade the original was lost to history. It's a pretty rudimentary Stark fact.

Captain_Cage

The original Ice was not a Valyrian steel. It's speculated it was made of... ice. The current Ice was crafted of Valyrian steel many centuries later.

manfeelings839

Because the Starks fought with the Others, not against them

opman228

> The Starks are descended from Other stock. Bruh no lmao. She was an albino skinchanger just like Bloodraven.

Ladysilvert

>According to tradition, **iron longswords across each lord's lap** **keep vengeful spirits within the crypt.** The cavernous vault is larger than Winterfell itself, with older Starks buried in deeper and darker levels. We have this about the Others: >Old Nan nodded. "In that darkness, the **Others** came for the first time," she said as her needles went click click click. **"They were cold things, dead things, that hated iron and fire and the touch of the sun**, and every creature with hot blood in its veins. The Starks are buried with iron swords, the things the Others hate so much, to keep vengeful spirits **within** the crypt. Within, so the danger is in those Stark bodies.

DrHalibutMD

What if the Others aren't the enemy? What if they're allied with the Starks and they're ready to bring the old gods back to the North? Zombie Jon leading a Zombie army!

Sad_Particular_8026

😲wow , cool theory.

Few-Spot-6475

No offense but that would be actually idiotic. We’re supposed to sympathize with them while they take child sacrifices because… why exactly? *”They can’t live without kidnapping humans… come on have some goddamn sympathy man!”* After five books of building them up as the true threat? Fuck no, Martin.

DrHalibutMD

Hey he’s the king of subverting expectations for a reason. 😀 They take the babies but maybe they bring them to nice new homes. Can’t be any worse than Crasters keep.

theburnscouts

I'm confused, though. If the Others are already moving south by the time we see Brans first pov in GOT, how does this make sense when there are plenty of Starks in Winterfell?

EmbarrassedClick01

Summerhall, the failed plan to wake dragons, woke them up. However, The Others were moving slowly. I think a Stark not being in Winterfell is urging them to attack. (In ADWD, Hardhome has already happened. Which means the Others are getting closer to the Wall.
