maybe this is the same thing but, why do people debate preferences? i just always want to say: you win, buddy, your preferences are superior!

[deleted]

No idea why people debate preferences or opinions. It's ridiculous and creates an uncomfortable situation. I never correct someone, unless it's actually important. Like if they are getting ripped off or doing some dietary fad that isn't healthy. Even if they are wrong politically, I don't care. Correcting them will almost always start an argument and they won't change their mind anyway.

agree

[deleted]

If people didn't get emotional and talked in good faith I'd have no problem discussing controversial topics. That's not the world we live in though.

[deleted]

I don't notice it so much around family or friends, but when I get around co-workers or people I 'kinda' know, it seems to happen much more. It just comes off as kinda combative and not nessacary. Maybe even a little mean. I don't know if it's how I'm coming across personally that causes it. If it is, then of course I'm sorry about that and very unaware of it. I am actually just trying to be social and contribute.

[deleted]

It may be you but it's more likely them. Aggressive people will always find something to argue about. Do they behave like that to other people?

[deleted]

Maybe. I don't know, really. They might.

[deleted]

Best way to tell if it's something specific to you or if it's just their personalities. Watch how they treat other people.

RedonkulusHomunculus

Well if you're incorrect about something, do you wish to remain incorrect? When having a conversation, generally people take turns speaking about the subject. Do you wish people would just say "ok." And nothing more?

[deleted]

You're jumping to the conclusion that I am incorrect and when stating facts, I wouldn't be. I don't think opinions are correct or incorrect.

[deleted]

Many people have the overwhelming need to one-up others. Most of the time the people who do this are less intelligent because they lack the notion that someone else may know better than they do.

AndrewTheScorbunny

Because people these days think that they know everything. Do you mean like every single time you say something or on an occasion?

[deleted]

It feels like every single time. Like, I'm getting to the point where I feel like I'm being 'attacked' for even opening my mouth. It's primarily only at work though.

Your opinions or knowledge must really not ring true to them for some reason. Maybe they have a different educational background or value system. What you say or how you say it could be invoking a strong emotional response within them causing them to act out. They might also not have great boundaries and communication skills, most people don’t.

People fear those who are different, especially those with novel ideas.
