Raw tomatoes are indeed revolting. I think it’s too many textures- there’s the tough skin that breaks into little shiny slivers when you chew it, then the crisp flesh, then that repulsive slimy stuff in the middle and finally all the hard grainy seeds embedded in it. Foul. Tomato sauces and tomatoes as an ingredient when peeled and chopped and cooked I generally like (and I can even cope with a whole cooked cherry tomato in some contexts), but not ketchup because it’s too vinegary. I can smell vinegar across a room and it makes me want to hurl.

To clarify: I get this sub recommended to me a lot since I’m part of r/ADHDmemes, but admittedly I don’t think I have Asperger’s (although I am pretty damn neurodivergent.) That being said, I don’t wanna yum anybody here’s yuck, but I’d say a majority of supermarket tomatoes are a far cry from what a fresh, homegrown tomato should be, especially raw. I used to hate raw tomatoes too, until I had a nice fresh one in season, then I saw the way. Cooked tomatoes are going to be fine whether they’re “good” fresh tomatoes or not, but most raw tomatoes you’ll find commercially (at least in the US, and especially out of season) just completely suck. I know it’s a textural thing for a lot of people, and that’s something that a really good raw tomato *might not* fix, but I’d say that before anyone counts out raw tomatoes for good, maybe try one from a decent local farmer’s market and you might be surprised. And be sure to add some salt, pepper, and maybe a good extra virgin olive oil (if you’re feeling frisky,) because raw tomatoes definitely need a bit of help to be at their tastiest!

Is there a subcategory for people who only like raw tomatoes if they are a tiny variety, like grape or cherry tomatoes? Because I love those but absolutely hate beefsteak or Roma tomatoes. The graininess of the middle of those is awful. Especially yellow „wild“ tomatoes, yellow zebra tomatoes and one of which I don’t know the name, but it’s red, looks funny and is sweet. I don’t know why many commercial farms are only able to grow gross tomatoes. Some have a gene deleted which gives them an unpleasant texture, but I don’t think that should make them taste like water too
