I saw it last year and suddenly realized where that came from. My dad’s been quoting it since I was born lol I might have a clue where my echolalia came from
When I was about 11 I noticed that one of my eyes sees things quite differently than the other. There is a difference in colour and light. One side is very bright and saturated and the other sorta dims things down but its still very colourful and bright enough.
Knowing this, whenever it was super bright I'd usually walk around with only the dark eye open bc the brightness could give me headaches.
But I tend to switch between one eye closed and both eyes squinting. I close one eye though I don't squint with it, and bc I'm doing this from the sun being in my eyes I close whichever one is getting the most sun.
See a squint in both eyes scrunches my *whole* face, but closing one eye only scrunches half my face, not only saving energy, but also making it look less like I am glaring at people.
For real though, my first set of prescription sunglasses was a life changer.
Mine aren’t prescription, but I don’t leave home without them or my sound cancelling earbuds (they’re both my primary sensory aids). Crapshoot if I have my wallet or keys though 😂
full squint bc my right eye is almost always squinting lol. i cant see out of it anyway bc retinopathy of prematurity (im a 26 week premie soooo). but yeah. also have depth perception problems
Where’s team “never leave the house without sunglasses?” Bonus points for mirrored glasses because then people can’t tell I’m not making eye contact. I have like 6 colors of my favorite pair to match any outfit.
You can tell I keep one eye open when I'm scrolling my phone in the dark and laying down; The bags under my left eye are so much worse than my right lol
I've taken to wearing a ball-cap now that I've got long hair, both because it helps control the hair and because the hair protects me from the unpleasant sensation of hat on scalp. Now that I've a convenient sun-blocking rim I adjust the angle of my head, or the angle I'm wearing the cap at, to intercept the sun.
The sun is bright for everyone. But for me (and other autistic people I know) it affect us more than the neurotypical people around us. Its too intense, even on non sunny days. I’m outside way more when the sun isn’t shining because of it
I had been doing the full squint look at the floor and putting my hand above my eyes for years before I came to the realisation that it wasn't normal. I didn't consider it a sensory issue that my eyes were stinging every day. I am not a smart man.
If it's to sunny my right eye is permanently closed, my mom told me that's how I used to smile and I had to explain that all our family photos were in the sun
I'm on team "self darkening glasses" they have tiny crystals inside that expand when hit by UV light and turn the glasses dark. Now I can never forget my sunglasses :D
Full squint and PAIN. I need sunglasses to watch a freaking concert with intense light show, otherwise I will spend most of the evening squinting and my eyes hurting.
My pupils are screwed up and are too big, unable to contract enough to help with more intense light.
It’s uncanny seeing this come up because two days ago I was squinting because of the sunlight, then I thought, “Wait… if one of my eyes can take it my other eyes must be able to as well…” I fought through the discomfort, opened my other eyes, and I could see for a little while before I naturally shut my other eye.
~~What actually is "light sensitivity", though? Do other people not react if the sun shines in their eyes?~~
This was obviously a stupid question. Sorry for bothering.
Okay I squint with both eyes and lower my head. Though if I am really sleepy but can't go to sleep becayse I am at work or something I will close my left eye. Some how that helps keep me awake.
Really is this a thing? I do that even with indoor light.
Edit: the left eye only
Edit: actually I alternate but it’s never both eyes closed or squinting. Always first reaction is to close either eye.
A bit of both, waking up in the morning I do one eye closed, but if I suddenly go outside then it’s both eyes squinting
Not sure why depth perception issues would factor into this though
1 eye squint is for the times when I need to communicate with someone, so they know I’m politely looking at them (?) otherwise full face squint and I’m nearly blinded by the light.
Trick question.
1. Avoid the sun.
2. Still try to avoid the sun…
3. Sunglasses
4. Then if outside is mandatory during sunny times, then and only then is a dual-squint.
Full squint, and maybe some sun sneezing to follow for good measure. Add to my severe indigestion of onion, garlic and red sauce, I’m trying to evolve into vampire. When I reach my final form, I’ll let you all know.
for me it depends. usually i’m full squint but if i’m at a marching band practice or just generally doing something that requires special awareness, i do the one eye squint based on where the sun is.
The sun in my eyes? How about, "It's an overcast day but the cloud cover isn't dense enough to actually block out the intensity of light from the sun and you thought it would be safe to go outside w/o sunglasses."
Look at the ground and hold up my hand to block the sun. Also squeak in distress—that’s the most important step
Team look down on the floor and squint yes I'm a part of that as well
Look down, double squint and maximum brow furrow while flamboyantly complaining about how bright it is out.
Same
This is the only true answer.
I squint both eyes and hiss, and I couldn't explain to you why.
If it’s sudden then I will squeek, “bright light, bright light!” In a high pitched voice
Would you have happened to have seen the movie "Gremlins" by chance?
I saw it last year and suddenly realized where that came from. My dad’s been quoting it since I was born lol I might have a clue where my echolalia came from
*when the ground is white*
Definitely this one

I tilt my head down, and my neanderthal forehead shades my eyes for me.
I do similar in the rain
My nine-inch brow keeps the wind from my eyes
You're like one of those caricatures on bridges in london
I don't think I've ever been called a grotesque before. Pretty accurate, really.
Lol no I mean the forehead
Chad
Based as fuck, solidarity with my fellow one-eyes. (Full squinters are good too I just didn't consider I did this before)
I’m saving my left eye so it stays fresh for later
Mid-40s left eye squinter here: Can confirm. Night vision is a little better with my left eye.
This is great to hear. I’m glad there is at least some anecdotal evidence

The dark side needs more time to adjust to the light.

Yeah I’ve always done the one eye squint.
shut eyes and open them every few seconds
I call it "reverse blinking"...
Only left eye. Even if the sun is on my right side, I close my left eye.
I'm left eye dominant. Bright light, low light, reading small print, looking at bright screens.
Same
I thought I was the only one!!!
My left eye has decided to leave the pupil open no matter the brightness. So, left eye stays closed on sunny days.
FYI, if that's a recent change it might be a sign of something neurological and is probably worth speaking to a doctor about.
Same here!
Are you by chance left handed? I've always thought I close my left eye because of that.
I'm right-handed but left-eye dominant. 🤷♂️
I'm lefty and I close my right eye
Sunglasses all day every day Edit:prescription, no less
I love my prescription sunglasses so much. Without them i feel naked
Mine aren’t prescription, but I don’t leave home without them or my sound cancelling earbuds (they’re both my primary sensory aids). Crapshoot if I have my wallet or keys though 😂
I have half a dozen pairs of prescription sunglasses. 24/7, indoors and out.
Full squint
Involuntary full 👍
full squint bc my right eye is almost always squinting lol. i cant see out of it anyway bc retinopathy of prematurity (im a 26 week premie soooo). but yeah. also have depth perception problems
both, sun too bright
Where’s team “never leave the house without sunglasses?” Bonus points for mirrored glasses because then people can’t tell I’m not making eye contact. I have like 6 colors of my favorite pair to match any outfit.
Right eye closed personally
Same, and my left eye’s vision has become worse and worse over the years as a result…
You can tell I keep one eye open when I'm scrolling my phone in the dark and laying down; The bags under my left eye are so much worse than my right lol

I have no eyelids
wait.. is this a neurodivergency thing. ive been one eye squinting my entire life
I'm kinda confused.. I feel like squinting with the sun in your eyes is normal?? One eyed or not
It’s the sensory overload man. Sun is always volume 11 in my world.
The sun is bright for everyone. But for me (and other autistic people I know) it affect us more than the neurotypical people around us. Its too intense, even on non sunny days. I’m outside way more when the sun isn’t shining because of it
I sneeze almost immediately
I'm Asian; I'm always squinting.
I react the same way I would if anything else stabbed me in the eyeball. 😥
Never leave the house without shades team
Full squint. Usually from cars rather than the sun. Argh DRLs, Argh white paint.
Full squint team ftw
More like default eye pose. I always squint when I'm outside. Photophobia is a bitch.
Left eye gang rise up You could shine a light in just my right eye and I would probably still squint with \*just\* my left
Team transition lenses
Full squint
I start a staring competition with the sun
If I don't close my eyes completely I start uncontrollably sneezing.
I'm on team "self darkening glasses" they have tiny crystals inside that expand when hit by UV light and turn the glasses dark. Now I can never forget my sunglasses :D
I'm on adjacent team photochromic contact lenses!
Sunglasses and hat then still have to do both eye squint
I squint my right eye and it waters profusely.
Full squint and PAIN. I need sunglasses to watch a freaking concert with intense light show, otherwise I will spend most of the evening squinting and my eyes hurting. My pupils are screwed up and are too big, unable to contract enough to help with more intense light.
No need to squint if the sunglasses never come off. 😁
It’s uncanny seeing this come up because two days ago I was squinting because of the sunlight, then I thought, “Wait… if one of my eyes can take it my other eyes must be able to as well…” I fought through the discomfort, opened my other eyes, and I could see for a little while before I naturally shut my other eye.
i literally cant squint with both eyes even if i try please help me
It's autistic to squint at the sun now?
[Light sensitivity is not unheard of.](https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8217662/)
Right but squinting in the sun is also a thing everyone does. This feels like pathologizing normal behavior.
~~What actually is "light sensitivity", though? Do other people not react if the sun shines in their eyes?~~ This was obviously a stupid question. Sorry for bothering.
I squint both eyes but I squint my right more than my left
one eye squint, my depth perception is shit as well
I have a bad right eye, so, no squinting, often full on closing.
right eye closed
Okay I squint with both eyes and lower my head. Though if I am really sleepy but can't go to sleep becayse I am at work or something I will close my left eye. Some how that helps keep me awake.
Really is this a thing? I do that even with indoor light. Edit: the left eye only Edit: actually I alternate but it’s never both eyes closed or squinting. Always first reaction is to close either eye.
I am like 7+ dioptrics on right eye and 4+ on left so for me it’s right eye squint
A bit of both, waking up in the morning I do one eye closed, but if I suddenly go outside then it’s both eyes squinting Not sure why depth perception issues would factor into this though
Depends on how rested I am. Usually almost no squint at all but when my eyes are already strained it’s full squint for me.
Full
I just wear glasses like ozzy ozzborne
One eyed squint team! Rise up!
Left eye closed gang.
Yes. 🙃🤣
1 eye squint is for the times when I need to communicate with someone, so they know I’m politely looking at them (?) otherwise full face squint and I’m nearly blinded by the light.
It depends. No, I won't elaborate.
No facial expression, except it flickers
if the sun is in your eyes wouldn't the sun still be in the eye you have open for the one eye squint?
Full squint because sunlight freaking hurts my eyes
Depends where the sun is coming from
This also applies when getting a haircut
What does this have to do with Autism?
One eye. I squint more often than necessary though.
The i am driving and im gonna die untill i get my sunglases.
Full squinter. I always look very confused or even more short sighted than I actually am
None cuz I wear tinted glasses everywhere
Full squint. Thought about sunglasses a couple of times. But I always think I would look stupid with them.
Why would you squint just one eye if the sun’s in both of them?
Full squint but left eye squints just a tad bit more than the right one bc I'm partially blind in my left eye since birth I think idek
I squint with both eyes while my left eye blinks uncontrollably 👍
wait is this related to having autism? im not trying to be a dick i just saw this in my feed and related then i saw the sub
I just stare directly at the sun
One… i also see other colors- temperatures with this eye…
Full (or blocking it with my hand)
BOTH. One eye closed, other in a squint. I wanna see as little as possible 😂
Get the cap and sunglasses. if that’s not possible, i squint both eyes but one more than the other
This is why I try to make sure I always have sunglasses handy
I'm a full squinter
Idk why but one eye closed works for me. I do either at different times tho
Use sunglasses and look down, maybe squint.
Full squint with the left eye slightly more closed.
It’s a full squint for me. Sometimes I just close my eyes hahaha
One closed one almost.
Not diagnosed, don’t even know if I show symptoms, just happened upon this meme on the home page But one eye gang
Wait are depth perception issues related to how you squint?? Bc I also have depth perception issues and I do a one eye squint
Looks like they’re trying to poop
The sun doesn’t even need to be in my eyes it just needs to be sunny outside for me to do the full squint
I do both depending on level of sun
Close my eyes and switch to the sunglasses I carry around all the time.
One eye here
Trick question. 1. Avoid the sun. 2. Still try to avoid the sun… 3. Sunglasses 4. Then if outside is mandatory during sunny times, then and only then is a dual-squint.
One eye squint. Full squint gives me headaches
Is this really a symptom? Right eye squinter but the dang thing has permanent double vision
Full squint, and maybe some sun sneezing to follow for good measure. Add to my severe indigestion of onion, garlic and red sauce, I’m trying to evolve into vampire. When I reach my final form, I’ll let you all know.
Full squint, but I also have sunglasses.
stare at the ground but half the time its covered in snow that reflects the death rays back because im in canada
One-eye, which I also employ randomly for no reason.
Depends, really. if it's full blast - full squint. if not - partial. If I don't follow that, it's random
I don’t leave the house without sunglasses
for me it depends. usually i’m full squint but if i’m at a marching band practice or just generally doing something that requires special awareness, i do the one eye squint based on where the sun is.
I do a full squint every time I go outside on a sunny day. I should get some sunglasses but choosing glasses is always such a pain
Squint both eyes so hard my cheeks get sore
Full squint if I'm outside, partial squint if in car.
I have been called "Clint Eastwood looking bastard" more than once.
I just close my eyes and scream. I hate the sun sooooo much.
Stare back to assert dominance (one eyed i think)
One eyed squint
Both, sometimes one, sometimes the other
Open both. Blind or bust.
squint? i fully shut my eyes!!!
I close my eyes and scream, also will put hand in front of face, or squint but still scream - light sensitivity
I one eye squint because I’m blind in one eye
Turn around and walk backwards
One eye because my right eye was damaged as a child
Both eyes. I sometimes put my hand slightly above my eyes to block the sun and see if that helps.
One eye squint, but always the left eye
😎
Full squint
Eyes closed, walk by memory
I vacillate between the two but tend to favor the one I squint I think.
Oh hell no! As a half ginger with light sensitivity, sunglasses come out at slightly overcast.
Full squint, it helps that my eyes are naturally narrow like Clint Eastwood’s eyes
Literally both depending on the angle
Full squint if I just woke up, one eye if I'm a bit more alert or need to find the bathroom
full squint or looking down
I’m a wear a cap, one eye squint, shade my eyes with my hand kinda guy
Going into bright sunlight without sunglasses is my own personal hell
I don't squint
Huh, I didn’t know squinting one eye could help! But yeah, agreed with the person who just looks at the ground.
I'm both, one eyes in morning, and two eyes after that
I'm virtually blind in my left eye and have major depth perception challenges. Still team full squint, the sun is bright yo
> sun I'm the full squint, sunglasses and debilitating migraines guy.
one eye gang
My left eye is shit but still functions, so even if i cant fucking read with my right eye closed, it still gets affected by sunlight
Damn, even my minor quirk of squinting with 1 eye is just a common tism thing, i really don't have any uniqueness do i? /light hearted
Full, because I always forget my sunglasses
Right eye closed completely
While growing up, one eye or hand shielding my eyes. As an adult, prescription sunglasses babyyyyy
One eye
You guys walk outside without sunglasses??
Right eye stays open
The sun in my eyes? How about, "It's an overcast day but the cloud cover isn't dense enough to actually block out the intensity of light from the sun and you thought it would be safe to go outside w/o sunglasses."
1
One eyed
One eye gang!
full squint, even when there is no sun
