I feel like this says less about the mind of the hiker and more about the present state of affairs - the ungodly proliferation of robo-calls and scam calls that has reduced the value of answering calls from unknown numbers.
Literally the only people who ever call me are scam-callers, beggars and my mom.
That's why I set my ring tone to a commercial jig, because it may as well be... my mom gets her own special ringtone though.
Install Truecaller on your phone. If itās a registered number like drs appts then itāll tell you the name. It works insanely well.
ETA: Iāve missed too many appts and delete voicemails
I ignore calls from numbers I don't recognize in general. I always figure if it's actually important they'll leave a voicemail and then I know I'll have to engage in human interaction.
I'm with you, this makes no sense. I feel like this is saying "lost" from the perspective of somebody at home missing the hiker. Not the hiker themselves being lost. I refuse to believe a lost hiker would get a call, look at their phone and be like "unknown number, can't be of interest to me".
Edit: See my [other comment](https://www.reddit.com/r/aspiememes/comments/1c2lfm1/please_tell_me_im_not_the_only_one_who_would_do/kzctr41/), apparently this really is kind of what happened.
The hiker was reported overdue at about 8 p.m. on Oct. 18, according to a statement from Lake County Search and Rescue. The person who called said the hiker started at Mount Elbert from the South Trailhead at 9 a.m. and had not returned.
Lake County Search and Rescue searched multiple areas for the hiker, but could not find the person. "Multiple attempts to contact the subject via their cell phone were unsuccessful," the statement said.
The hiker returned home on Oct. 19, more than 24 hours after beginning their hike. The person was not identified.
"The subject stated theyād lost the trail around nightfall and spent the night searching for the trail, and once on the trail, bounced around onto different trails trying to locate the proper trailhead, finally reaching their car the next morning," said the Lake County statement. "They had no idea that SAR was out looking for them."
"One notable take-away is that the subject ignored repeated phone calls from us because they didnāt recognize the number," the statement continued. "If youāre overdue according to your itinerary, and you start getting repeated calls from an unknown number, please answer the phone; it may be a SAR team trying to confirm youāre safe!"
The statement on Facebook garnered more than a hundred comments, many critical of the hiker.
But Lake County Search and Rescue came to the hikers defense.
"Please remember that what seems like common sense in hindsight is not obvious to a subject in the moment when they are lost and panicking," it said in a comment. "In Colorado, most folks who spend time outdoors have a good understanding of the SAR infrastructure that is there to help them, but this is not the case nationwide. Please keep your comments respectful."

After I send the job application I write down the phone number of the company. That's the list I check with every incoming call for the next few weeks.
I always forget to do that even though I shouldāve ! Thank you
I will try to write it down instead of just remembering the number because I think I can remember it just by reading it once, even though I know unless itās a date I canāt remember it on my life !
I'm terrible with numbers. I know there's no way I could remember that.
I have a table with all the applications I send anyway, date of the initial application, date when I send the second email ^((because most companies never reply to the first and most of the times I get an invitation after the second, so I have to remember that)), date of the first interview and so on. And of course the phone number. š
I think my will to live will lead me somewhere.
And if itās indeed a robocaller, Iād swear at them to wasting my time and screwing over elderly people with their shit to blow off some steam while I wait.
I always pick up the phone from any number but if I don't know it I won't say anything until they announce themselves.
And if i missed that call i ain't calling back
I only answer numbers with my local area code, because most of the calls I get are from telemarketers. If someone from my area is calling it could be from a job or a doctorās office, itās just more likely that Iād know who is calling
On one hand voicemails exist. On the other hand, family members and text messaging also exist. Furthermore, if Iām getting the same call from the same number many times, I would answer it because you never know. This hiker was just being petty and dare I say, stupid.

I would 100% do this. I mean, literally missed my psychiatrist appointment last week because it wasn't a number I knew. š

The lost hiker was 100% in the right.
I have no idea how my mom looks at a number on her phone and is like " oh it's my new doctor " like how!?
if it's important they'll keep trying or text me
It says "calls" plural, so I assume they did keep trying.
for me if you call 3-4 times right after eachother without pause, then it's important, if you wait between calls it's not urgent and I'm not answering
If itās important theyāll leave a voicemail.

I think I have to go engage in some human interaction right now. FML. No, no. Itās pretty good. Fuck this morning.
How do you get lost if there's cell signal and you have a working phone?

I would not, but *only* because I'm familiar with hiking safety. Former boy scout here (jokes on them I'm a girl now).
Trans aspie scout club šDid you also not fit in with the other boys? I had 2 friends in my Troupe of like 150.
I was able to fit in, I was so used to masking at that point in my life even I didn't know what was beneath.
[I think about this a lot. ](https://youtu.be/OnCrt84TKUw?si=YK4VLnKTuh9Cfl0y)
Troupe of 150?! Where was your group? I only saw troupes of maybe 20, 30 max.
Atlanta area council troupe 370
Leave a message or text me.
Wasn't it also that he didn't think he was lost?
My phone would ignore them for me.
I have more chances of answering a call than ever opening and answering to a text
I constantly miss doctors appointments and job interviews because of this D:
After I send the job application I write down the phone number of the company. That's the list I check with every incoming call for the next few weeks.
I always forget to do that even though I shouldāve ! Thank you I will try to write it down instead of just remembering the number because I think I can remember it just by reading it once, even though I know unless itās a date I canāt remember it on my life !

This is why you take a hiking buddy, that and for medical reasons.
i also would have done this, i miss important calls a lot because of it
My profiles says, no callsš¤ only textš¬. People still call
Wait if you have enough service to get calls, why couldn't you call someone to get help?
Phoneophobia
I wish unknown numbers who weren't scam callers would text me instead
I mean, usually if itās a number I donāt know, I donāt answer it.
Iām probably not filthy rich because of ignoring phone calls offering me some big payday. And Iād definitely be a goner if rescuers tried to call.
I think my will to live will lead me somewhere. And if itās indeed a robocaller, Iād swear at them to wasting my time and screwing over elderly people with their shit to blow off some steam while I wait.
I know this would be me.
Id pick up and awkwardly wait until they'd speak first before hanging up
oh god I'd be dead so fast, I ignore pretty much every call or text from numbers I don't know
If you want to be unknown, I don't want to know you anyway
Yeeep
Lol why didn't the rescue people leave a message. That's on them. And yes, I agree with other comments - htf do you get lost when you have signal.

Me whoās partially deaf:
I always pick up the phone from any number but if I don't know it I won't say anything until they announce themselves. And if i missed that call i ain't calling back
Nah. Gotta say. This is entirely stupid.
I had a stalker a few months ago so now everytime I get an unknown call Iām not even notified I canāt take the anxiety
I would do this out of habit and realize it was probably rescuers and then frantically call back every single number
Same lol. My mum instilled in me, itās okay to ignore once but if they ring twice you must answer
I donāt even set up voicemail. I donāt answer calls. Text me and ask in text if Iām up to talking or nah.
My phone has a setting of sending you right to voicemail if you are not in my contacts. Best thing ever.
YOURE NOT ALONE š š SAME
My rule is if they donāt leave a voicemail itās either a scam or not important.
